We mourn the loss of Capt. Phil Harris

captain-phil-hIt is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad – Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. – Jake and Josh Harris

It is with tremendous sadness that I say goodbye to Phil Harris. Phil and I have been business partners and friends for nearly 20 years.  We have been through a lot of ups and downs together with the F/V Cornelia Marie. As a skipper, he was a great fisherman. He loved his family and cared for his crew. We will all miss him. – Cornelia Marie Devlin

Statement from Discovery – Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil’s every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil’s sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.

I am very sorry for your loss. I grew to love Capt. Phil through the TV show like millions of others. Your Dad was tough as nails and a true American if I have ever seen one. Only a man of true grit risks everything he has on a daily basis to make life better not for him but for his family and community.
Thank you for putting your fmaily on public display so we could get to know you better and become ‘fans’.
May you find peace in knowing your Dad is in the most beautiful place in the Universe and beyond. He will be missed by many.

I have watched the Deadliest Catch for several years. Recently, I moved to the Middle East and was THIRLLED to see all you guys again on my television…albeit at 2:00am! :) I always enjoyed watching your dad and thought he had the funniest comments and such a wicked sense of humor! It was obvious that he loved his boys and his family. Take comfort in each other and the sea.
    Rest in peace, Captain.

So sorry to hear this sad, sad news.
Condolences to his boys, his family and the family of fellow fishermen who have lost a good and dear friend.
The show won’t be the same without him.
RIP Capt. Phil, we’re gonna miss you lots.

My condolences go out to the crew of the Cornelia Marie and to the departed Captain’s family. I have watched that show every time it has been on and I would look for the Cornelia Marie. I thought Phil Harris was quite a character and a fair captain to his crew. I am sorry he is no longer with us…RIP Phll, hope they got a pack of smokes and some coffee ready for you when you get there.

    Josh and Jake,
I’m very sorry for the loss of your father. I understand how you’re feeling because I lost my dad, who was also a fisherman, on the 28th of January this year…My prayers go out to your family. Please accept my condolences in this very difficult time. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.

I am taking time to give thanks for the life and personality that we fans got to know of Captain Phil Harris through Discovery Channel’s series Deadliest Catch. I truly regret that I never got to meet him in person. Thanks so much to the Harris family and all of the crews in that series for sharing your work and your lives with us.

  16. KodiakHatch February 10, 2010 at 3:30 am #

We have lived in Kodiak for two years and seen the Cornelia Marie many times berthed in Dog Bay. My husband is in the Coast Guard and has had many amusing interactions with Captain and crew, and I have been a fan of the show from the beginning. Captain Phil, you will be truely missed. May the Lord bless your soul, and your crew have full pots this day.

  17. shawn schulte February 10, 2010 at 3:30 am #

My deepest regrets and heartfelt simpathies to the family and the crew…losing such a captain is a great loss and my personal experince of 17 years fishing in Alaska, gives me a great pause as another of its community is lost. I remember the boat well and have only the brotherhood of the sea to bind me to him, but I will offer up with honor my thoughts and my condolences and will raise a cup in his honor. Hail captian Phil Harris! Hail to his life, his spirit, his passion!

  18. DAVID PRIDDY February 10, 2010 at 3:31 am #

IM VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS AN JUST KNOW HE IS IN A BETTER PLACE. YOU WILL GREATLY BE MISSED BY EVERYONE. YOU MADE PEOPLE SMILE AN LAUGH AN TO ENJOY TO JUST SEE THE EVERY DAY TOLLS THAT YOU DO. I THOUGHT THE WORLD OF YOU, BECAUSE YOU HAD THE DRIVE AS A PERSON TO KNOW WHAT YOU WANTED AN TO GO GET IT. THAT IS WHY I HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FOR YOU. YOU ALWAYS PUT EVERYONE ELSE 1ST BEFORE YOU PUT YOURSELF AN THEREFORE I COMMEND YOU SIR PHI. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANKS FOR BEING WHO YOU WAS, BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NOONE THAT CAN FILL YOUR SHOES OR WOULD

This absolutely breaks my heart. I cried when I saw the news pop up on Yahoo. Though we never got the oppertunity to met Captain Phil through the show we felt like we knew him.

Captain Phil- You will be greatly missed.

    Fair Winds and Following Seas

    Fair winds and following seas
    Ripples shimmer in sunsets golden
Cast your eyes to the heavens
Arise the first star of the night
A light shines bright when darkness contrasts
Earth in blue and blue of sky
When silenced falls after the bell
Soft sounds of waves upon the shore
When called to sail the seas of heaven
No longer bound to earthly soil
Abide in rest, no more to toil
    The Captains table welcomes thee
    Fair winds and following seas

Thanks Capt. Phil for showing us all how to live a life of honest true hard work. To your family I feel your loss. I might not have met him in person but if I had I am sure I would want to call him a friend. You are a man with a heart of gold. Bless you til we all can hear your fishing stories again.

  24. Heather Miller February 10, 2010 at 3:34 am #

My deepest condolences to the Harris family and Captain Harris’ many friends and colleagues both in and out of the Alaskan fishing community. He has left a tremendous legacy in all the people he trained, inspired and educated about this profession. Though I never had the pleasure to meet him, I was touched watching his race for the crab season after season and fight for his health 2 years ago. I am so saddened to hear of his loss. You’ll all be in my prayers. Phil, you’ll be missed by so many!

  25. Elizabeth & Kendra February 10, 2010 at 3:36 am #

My daughter & I are huge fans of the show, and especially the “family dynamic” aboard the Cornelia Marie. Josh & Jake, your Dad will be missed by many, like ourselves, who never met him, but feel like we knew him. Keep him alive in spirit by continuing running the ship & crew he loved so much! RIP Capt Phil.

R.I.P. Phil – Deadliest Catch ain’t gonna be the same without you. To Jake, Josh, and the rest of Captain Phil’s family/friends, may God be with you during this difficult time.

Words can not say what can be felt. We will miss this man dearly and wish him safe passage to his next port. To his sons and family, do not hang your heads in sorrow, as he will always be with you on the winds.

Good bye Phil We will never forget you. May God bless you and your loved ones.

  29. Mike DeMint February 10, 2010 at 3:39 am #

My condolences to the Harris family, but Captain Phil was doing what he wanted to do. Most men end up doing things for a living they hate with a passion. But watching the show, you can tell he was always concerned of the crew he Captained and his family. You can be rest ashured, that Captain Phil from will have clear skies, smooth seas to still search for crab! It takes a real man to do what he has a passion for and not give up in the struggle, no matter the obsticles in the way or the hours involved.

  30. Adam February 10, 2010 at 3:39 am #

You will never be forgotten. We will miss you Captain Phil Harris.

Jake and Josh I am so very sorry for your loss! I feel such a deep sadness with the passing of your beloved father Phil. I will always feel a loss for not having met “Captain Phil” in person. During the time of his public appearances a prolonged family illness and subsequent loss made it impossible to attend. I would have been proud to shake your father’s hand.

Harris family and friends, thank you very much for sharing your lives with us. I will never forget the moments that you decided to share with us. It is, at least, a comforting fact that he was not lost to the seas and enjoyed what he was doing the most. Please accept my condolences.

R.I.P. Phil!!! So sad to hear of his death. To Jake and Josh, hang in there guys. The ONLY thing that will help is the passage of time. Learn one thing from your Dad’s mistakes: QUIT SMOKING!!! I smoked for 30 years and quit about 5 years ago but it’s too late. im oxygen dependent and cant work anymore and I’m only 48!! I know that sounds ancient to you but believe me, it comes quicker than you think. It is the very best change you can make for your health. I will keep you in my prayers…

  41. Ed Cochran February 10, 2010 at 3:52 am #

I will truly miss Captain Phil. He had a heart bigger than Alaska. I feel like his death is partly my fault. I have watched him for years on TV and was worried about his unhealthy lifestyle. I should have said something. I hope Phil’s passing can be used as an inspiration for millions. May he rest in peace and God Bless. Ed

On behalf of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines here on Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, our heartfelt condolences go to the family and friends of the Cornelia Marie. For the past few years, we fans of the show had grown to love Capt. Phil Harris, his boys, and his crew. May his legend continue to live on for eternity. Rest in peace, Capt. Phil, and know that you did more than fish; you were a leader, a father, and overall a great man.

  43. Felicien February 10, 2010 at 3:53 am #

Wow. Just wow. I just read the news. It seemed like things had improved just days ago. I’m in shock.

Josh and Jake…. it’s your turn now. Make the old man proud!

  44. Niamh Rogan February 10, 2010 at 3:54 am #

I can’t believe he’s actually gone. It was sudden and Phil was still young, he had many years left.
My heart and thoughts are with him, his family and crew.
    Sleep well Cap’n

  46. Jennifer Johnson February 10, 2010 at 3:56 am #

It shows how wonderful of a man Phil was when millions of us never met him but we feel like we have lost one of our own. Unlike superstars on TV you guys are real, heart and soul, and you pain is ours to share. Steer onward Captain Phil to Heaven’s waters where you may sail forever.

Godspeed Captain, you will be missed. My condolences to the family.

  51. Susan February 10, 2010 at 4:03 am #

I’m so profoundly sorry. My heart is broken for Phil’s family, friends, fellow fishermen and the production crews who went out to sea with the Cornelia Marie. Like so many fans, I am at a loss for words to describe my feelings accurately. He showed us skill, courage, strength, commitment, determination, humor and how sons should be raised. He hid nothing from us as he allowed us to share his life at sea. I feel as though I’ve lost a close friend….that I was very fortunate to have.

  52. Tracy February 10, 2010 at 4:03 am #

I am very sorry for the loss of your dad… he was a father.. a husband… a friend.. and most of all an influential fisherman. He will be missed by all

  53. Debbie February 10, 2010 at 4:04 am #

Bon Voyage Capt.Phil. May your spirit soar over the Berring Sea and be a guardian angel to Jake, Josh & the crew of the Cornelia Marie.

Much love and sympathy to the family and crew. He will truly be missed by all.

  54. sonny February 10, 2010 at 4:04 am #

My heart goes to all of you. I know what you are feeling,it is the most hardest thing to deal with in life, especially when its your father. I couldn’t believe my eyes,or my ears when my wife told me,it was like my heart sank to my feet, and everything around me stopped,it was like time froze,I cried as if it was my father that passed. God bless your family. I’m so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, sonny stevens (california)

I’m so sorry to hear of Captain Phil’s passing, I’ve watched the show Deadliest Catch since the very first season and remember seeing him since the very beginning, In your time of loss our prayers will be with you and your family

  56. Ron Beard February 10, 2010 at 4:06 am #

Cap’n you were a hell of a man. Even though I’m a Texan through and through and know nothing about fishing, I’d have been proud to bust my you know what serving under you.You not only earned the respect of your crew, you earned the respect of a nation. If there’s a heaven for fishermen,I know that you have to be there with all of your fallen brethren drinking a beer, swapping stories, and laughing your ass off.Rest well my friend.

My prayers are up for the Harris family and his many friends. I’m floored. I too know what losing a Father is like. Although Captain Phil was only 6 months older than me, it’s still like losing a family member yet again. I also still can’t believe it. God Bless Phil and his family and friends. May Our Lord embrace him forever ! You are already missed my friend. Rest with the Angels. Sincerely, Ronnie Fisher ( California )

  61. Everett Rice February 10, 2010 at 4:14 am #

My deepest sympathies to the Captain’s family. Like others have already said I only ever met Captain Harris on a TV screen but I too felt as close to him as any of those I work with every day. It was a shock to see his passing listed on my home pages headlines a few minutes ago. He came accross as one of those few individuals I could have spent an entire night talking about anything he’d want to and leave wanting more. Such men are rare in todays world. I envy those who knew him the time they had to spend with him. All of us who watch Deadliest Catch will miss him deeply.

  62. Deb R February 10, 2010 at 4:15 am #

I am truly saddend by this news. Didn’t have the privilage to ever meet Phil, I so wish I had. There was a reason he was the favorite captain in the Bering Sea, he had an awesome presence and was a good person, that was obvious without my ever knowing him. My heart is heavy today knowing he no longer walks this earth except in spirit. Carry on Jake and Josh, I believe he’d want that. God Bless.

  63. Dan February 10, 2010 at 4:15 am #

God bless you Phil and the work you’ve done. Everyman dies, not every man truly lives. You lived a hell of a life taking on the toughest job for as many years as you have. You left your boys in good hands. Rest in peace and then wake up to where the fishing never leaves the boat empty.

  64. Rob February 10, 2010 at 4:16 am #

Jake & Josh and the crew of the Cornelia Marie, I’m sorry for your loss, It won’t be the same but keep Crab fishing, he will always be there.

  65. Larry February 10, 2010 at 4:16 am #

My deepest condolences to Capt. Phil’s family, crew and friends. This is a great loss and he will be missed, but may the memory of his witty remarks, devotion and love of crab fishing live on.

Your all in my thoughts and prayers.

I am in shock and so sad. Strange how someone you’ve never met can affect you this way. Phil seemed larger than life and such a genuinely good guy. My heart goes out to Jake and Josh and the rest of Phil’s family – your loss is shared with so many others.

To Josh, Jake and the crew of the Cornelia Marie: I am saddened to hear of the loss of Phil. He was a great father, friend and fisherman. I always enjoyed watching the show and seeing how you all interacted with each other no matter how good or bad the fishing was it was a delight to watch. I hope you know that no matter what happens he will always be that voice in the back of your mind telling you how it should be and being there to watch over you no matter where you go. My prayers are with your family and crew.

I know how devastating losing a parent is…especially at such a young age. I am so sorry for your loss. Phil was an outstanding man. I feel like he was a part of my family as are his sons and crew of the F/V Cornelia Marie. May your wonderful memories carry you through the difficult times ahead.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Y condolinces to your family, Capt. Phil was my fave, he will be deeply missed!!

  80. Greg February 10, 2010 at 4:31 am #

I am completely devastated. Of all the men / boats who are on the show Deadliest Catch, Phil was my favorite captain / boat to watch for the mere fact that Cornelia Marie is a family run business with his sons Jake and Josh similar to my business where i own and operate a moving company with my dad as well. His boat and its crew has all the makings of a tight and close family bond that always made it thru the hardest of times. May you rest in peace Phil and God Bless your soul and may you watch over your sons as they run the Alaskan waters for the Deadliest Catch………Take Care

  81. Rob Buell February 10, 2010 at 4:32 am #

Phil Harris didn’t die in the sense we may think of death. I much prefer to think he simply moved up to a larger “Captain’s chair.”

To Phil’s family and friends, I offer my most sincere condolences. Phil struck me as one of those folks who is “the real deal,” and the kind of guy you could entrust your last penny to…not to mention your life…and not have to think twice about it.

    Godspeed Phil Harris.

  82. Lisa February 10, 2010 at 4:32 am #

To Josh, Jake, Phils crew and family, I sit here deeply shocked after reading the update. My thoughts, tears and prayers go out to you all. Lisa Australia

I watch the show always here in the Philippines and the stories about Capt. Phil Harris is the one that I always look out for. He is quite a character and despite his looks, he is a darn strong and responsible guy.

    From one sailor to another…
    Sailors Prayer
    by Charles D. Williams

    Sailors pray,
For fair winds and a following sea

The smell of salt in the air,
The feel of their skin as it’s touched by the spray

    An albatross soaring above,
Dolphins in the ship’s wake at play

To witness a work of art that only God can create,
The sunset at the end of day

At night a million stars in the sky,
Safe anchorage in an islands lee

When the time comes to die as for all it must,
To awake in Sailors Heaven where nothing ever rusts

    And always there would be,
Fair winds and a following sea

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9v55HeFcjo

    Seven Seas…

Long ago we sailed with fury
Across the oceans of the world
The legend lives, it stays forever
    We are ready so beware

We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas
We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas

Strong – we’ll fight for king and country
    With power left to spare
The longboat force is back again
To take on all the world

We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas
We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas

    We are immortal
    The glory’s in our hands
    For blood is our hunger
    We know where we stand

We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas
We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas
We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas
We are rulers of the ocean
    Kings of seven seas

He is not in any more pain and all he knows is peace. You WILL see him once when it is your time as well. Prayers for your strength, hope, love and healing. This is so sad but if we all remember Phil’s words when he started having these problems he told us all this is how it is and it could get him if not careful. I am so terribly shocked and saddened by the passing of Captain Phil – my heart just sank when I read the news.

There are very few people we meet through our TV screens who become part of our lives and consciousness. Captain Phil became one of my colleagues, a friend, a source of inspiration. I admired him as a good man and a great father, as well as a phenomenal fisherman.

To all his family, friends and colleagues, please accept my condolences, and know that you knew a man who was admired the world over. You should be so very proud.

    Niall, Ireland.

  144. WebKat February 10, 2010 at 5:49 am #

I never knew Phil personally but watching him on TV, laughing with him, sharing fears and loving the same things, watching with wide eyes a man that you wished you could know, made him a part of my life and I’m saddened to see that light extinguished.

My thoughts are with his family, friends and crew, there are no words that can ease the loss of a loved one but shared memories can make the journey easier.

Goodbye Captain Phil, you will be missed.

So sad to hear of Captain Phil’s untimely passing. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and colleagues. Phil was an amazing Captain, and we learned so much just watching the show. My husband and I worried when he first got sick, and loved watching his interactions with his boys. From what I could see, he was a leader of men in a very dangerous job, but more importantly, he was a husband, a father, and an inspirational role model who brought up his sons to be exceptional men. The world feels a bit emptier knowing Phil is gone. Rest in Peace Captain Phil, and Bright Blessings to all who mourn your passing.

I am shocked at the same time and hope that the two boys will make there way in life. Only by watching the show you already got a good understanding of what sort of man he was and I always appreciated his humors, honest and fair way of dealing with his sons and his crew. He will be truly missed. Lots of love Muriel

    Don’t think of him
    as gone away-
    his journey has just begun
    life holds so many facets-
    this earth is only one..
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
    that we could know today
    how nothing but our sadness
    can really pass away,
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched…
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and he was loved so much.

There will be a huge void in not only Jake & Josh’s life, but in everyone’s life that got to know him & his crew by watching the show. If there was such a thing as a “FISHERMAN HALL OF FAME” he was & always will be an inductee that can’t be rivaled! Were gonna miss ya Phil!!! Thought’s & Prayer’s for the “CORNELIA MARIA” Family & the whole “Crabin” Community.

“They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.” Godspeed Captain Phil, you were loved well and that is all we can ask of this life.

Jake, Josh, other family members, & crew of the Cornelia Marie: It is with deep regret to learn of you father’s & your captains passing. I enjoy Deadliest Catch immensely & Capt. Phil was one of the few that was always positive & didn’t portray that he was put upon this earth to be an ***hole. I was so elated upon his return from medical leave, to know that he was doing well & was healthy enough to return to captain his ship. I will miss his smiling, laughing face on Deadliest Catch.

I am a 35 year old man and this news brought tears to my eyes. My wife and I watched this show because of how real and genuine everyone is that’s on it. Phil was (and still is) my favorite captain of the crab fleet. The news of Phil’s passing is heart wrenching, but god needed a damn good captain up there and he sure as hell got one. To Josh, Jake, the family, friends and anyone that new Phil; I just want to say that I am very sorry for the loss.

To Discovery Channel: Thank you for honoring Phil. I know he was just more than a guy on the tv screen, he was a father, a friend, and so much more.

Let us remember Phil with a smile. Let us be proud for what he showed us, taught us, and allowed us to see. Instead of mourning, let us celebrate his life!

It is heartbreaking to learn of Captain Phil’s passing. My deepest sympathy to Jake and Josh and all of Captain Phil’s family! Capt’n Phil shared his life openly and allowed us a glimpse into the life of a man who lived with honor and character. Strong lessons from a strong man. You will be sorely missed but remembered with love. Thank you for sharing your zest for life with us!

R.I.P Capt. Phill Harris! What an amazing and interesting person. I cannot imagine how hard this time must be for the family. Also the TV family that has been following your show (from home)of course, we will always remember Capt. Phil. A true fishing warrior and fighter. I never seen him back down from a challenge at sea and for that it changed the way I live my life. Thanks for the memories Captain! R.I.P

  269. Katie February 10, 2010 at 11:12 am #

Jake and Josh, I think a fisherman is the best kind of father you can have. Mine shared his love of fishing with me too.

Your dad loved you guys very much and will be keeping watch over you on your future trips. I’m so sorry he had to be taken from you so soon.

  270. Ericka February 10, 2010 at 11:20 am #

I’m so sorry, Josh and Jake! Your dad was an amazing man and it was obvious how much he loved and cared for you both. He will be missed by many but kept forever in our hearts.

We’ll miss ya, Phil. Hope they load your ashes into a big bottle rocket, launch it off the deck and blow your ashes all over the Bearing Sea. If it gets a little close to Time Bandit, well that’s OK too…

  276. Bruce February 10, 2010 at 3:55 pm #

Phil was good example of a good Dad, Boss, and friend that America will miss watching and knowing. When he talked EVERYONE listened because he told us how it was without any angle other than true concern for safety, and prosperity for others.

    Bruce

  277. Eric February 10, 2010 at 3:56 pm #

Condolences to Phil’s family, crew and extended family at Discovery. My son and I watched every episode over the years, and were quite fond of Phil, his personality, his attitude, and his persistence. Good guy under the tough guy surface. Well respected by his crew. Will miss him on the show.

    Smooth sailing, Phil.

    Best.

  278. Glenn February 10, 2010 at 4:08 pm #

Hello boys. This sad event does not come as a shock to me, considering I could see your dad’s overstressed condition and health problems on the show. But I must say the he was my favorite character on the show, not just because he was entertaining to watch, but the quality of man he seemed to be. Gruff, rough, and in love with his kids, though both be trials, let’s be honest! :) I wish both you of you the best, and this loss does not cancel out everything you have had and shared with your father for so many years. Be strong, and down a red bull for your old man. You’ll be fine.

  279. Brenda Peters February 10, 2010 at 4:10 pm #

WOW! I am shocked beyond words. I don’t know what to say, except reading it made me cry. I have watched the show since it started, and I always rooted for the Cornelia Marie. It will never be the same. Josh & Jake, my sympathies to you and the rest of your family. I pray that you will continue to run your dad’s boat knowing that his spirit will be guiding you along the way. May god above bless you all.

  280. D.K. February 10, 2010 at 4:10 pm #

Josh and Jake, I’m so very sorry for you loss. It was pretty obvious to me that your dad loved and cared for you both very much, even when he was kicking your butts. Just by watching the show, I felt like I knew all of you. It won’t be the same without him. You are in my thoughts.

  281. MC February 10, 2010 at 4:20 pm #

From the daughter of a captain to Jake and Josh,

I hope you look back on time spent working with your dad with the same appreciation I do. We’ve had the rare opportunity to work side-by-side with our fathers at a job we love, and see the way others respect and revere them.
Nothing in this life compares to working on the sea– may you keep your father’s memory alive in your thoughts and in actions.

    Deepest sympathy,
    M

My greatest wish at this time of loss is that we all remember, family and viewers alike, how much fun Captain Phil made out of a grueling and dangerous occupation. May God hold the family tightly in his loving and healing embrace, and hopefully they have an idea of just how much so many strangers care about Phil and family.

Jake and Josh..our thoughts and prayers go with you during this tough time. Your dad was a pleasure to watch..a tough man, but fair and expected much from you two. Josh and Jake I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your father. He was an inspiration to many who watched the show and I’m sure more so to those who knew him personally. I know this is hard on both of you, but always remember your father and use his courage and determination to guide you through the journey of your own lives. You both are great kids and I wish you the best. Take time to remember, grieve, and get through this hard time. We’re all keeping you and your loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathy to the Harris family. I did not watch the show regularly (my son watches it religiously, though) but when I did manage to sit down and watch it, I was always drawn in by Phil Harris’ straightforward honesty! He was a gruff (on the outside) sailor who had a wit that would knock your socks off. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was close to this incredible man, especially his sons. Rest in peace, Cap’n Phil Harris!

  303. Lora February 10, 2010 at 4:50 pm #

Rest in peace Phil, we have come to love you in NewZealand, someone we have never met, I will think of you next time I pass through Seattle/ Puget Sound area. I associate that area with all of you whether or not that association is correct. I love Seattle, the locks, the bars, the tattoo artists, to be by the sea, or on the sea, heaven and hell all together, and I can only imagine how hard it actually was out there! Jake and Josh may family and friends hold you tight, may fortune find it’s way to your door, and may the salt run deep in your veins.

I know for me, when I tuned into every episode, it had less to do with the crab fishing and more to do with checking in with the captains and crews. I couldn’t wait to see what your crew was up to. Your antics, your brashness, and your love & loyalty to each other reminded me of my own family. Your dad will be sorely missed. No matter what was coming out of his mouth, and you never really knew what would, you always knew that Phil was honest, tough, and loyal to those he held near him. I hope you guys realize what a great man your father was and that everything he did, he did with you guys in mind. My thoughts and prayers are with you both and I’m so sorry for your loss.

My thoughts & prayers go out to Jake, Josh and his crew. I have watched the show for years now and Phil and his crew where my favorite. I like most watchers where there when he fell ill during the 2008 season ( if I remember correctly) and I was so glad to see him come back. He was for sure blunt & honest even if you didn’t want to hear it. I loved that about him. And sometimes when he would talk about his boys it was nice to see this man show his softer side. I could tell that he loved his boys more than the sea itself. He will be truly missed. Thank you for allowing us the chance to get to know him on-screen. He was a true kick in the A**.

Well this sucks!! My thoughts and prayers are with those who loved Phil Harris. His loss is great one. I took so much comfort from watching him on the show. He reminded me of my own father who I lost in 2004. No words will make the loss better. Time doesn’t lessen the pain, but it gets less and less frequent that you feel it over time. Always keep his life and works close to you. It helps. All my support and regrets.

I NEVER EVER post online for anything, but your Dad was someone who I enjoyed watching. I lost my Mom last March 19th, 2009. The emotional journey will be long, but let them out whenever you need to. I will miss seeing your Dad giving you boys, the crew and the Sea hell. Captain Phil was one of a kind, heart of gold, and put up with no BS from anyone or anything. If this is covered in the upcoming season, it will be hard to watch, but I will. Love and prayers from my family to you all.

Well, I guess God needed someone to captain His boat, and wanted the toughest SOB he could find. True grit and spirit shone thru whenever Captain Phil was in the wheel house.

Phil’s boys knew, as we all did too, that their dad was a tough nut, but had a heart of mush and gold. Great Captian, great dad, and a great guy. He will be missed. All the best to everyone on the Cornelia Marie and at TDC.

People talk these days about “real men” and what that means. Well I for one, always considered Phil to be a man’s man. He was tough when he had to be, caring when it mattered, loved his family dearly and wasn’t afraid to show it. He treated his men and crew with fairness and dignity while at the same timing providing the necessary, strong leadership and guidance that only a real man could , to get the job done and more importantly get his crew back home safely from an angry sea that would swallow them up in an instant. Watching the show, I felt a part of his family, and feel the loss of this big bear of man as I would any good friend. I know I felt nothing but a great deal of respect for Phil and all the men he sailed with as well as all of those who plied the waters of the Bering Sea to bring home the bacon. Phil, thanks for allowing those of who would otherwise never have known what it was all about, a rare look into the lives of men and women who put it out there every day so that the rest of us can enjoy the fruit of their labors.

My heart goes out to your sons and wife and all of those who knew you closely. The world is a lesser place from your passing. Go with God.

My sympathies, love, and prayers to Jake and Josh and Phil’s entire family, to Murray and the rest of the crew, and to the entire Deadliest Catch family.

He concord the sea and catptured the world.

To me he was like a modern day hero, one of the bravest men on earth. One could tell he was not only a great leader, a compassionate man and a mountain to his family. But he was a man of such character as to belong in the history books, as one of the greatest pioneers of our times. It’s people and captains like Captain Phil Harris that carry the torch that leads the way for all of us. He showed us the compassion, strength, will and determination that all of humanity should follow and how the be a truely great friend in the prosess.

Dear God please be with Phil Harris and his family in this difficult hour. We pray for his safe passage into your ever merciful and loving arms and for his soul to be lifted up high into your heavens. And we pray for strength and understanding for all those who hold him dear including his great following of many fans, but especially to his loving family and friends. May he forever be remembered in our minds and our hearts as the great man and true hero he was. Amen.

This morning we found out that Captain Phil had passes away. It saddens our hearts that such a great man was taken away from his family, crew, and fans all too soon. Though we never were able to meet Captain Phil, we have admired him and respected him since the first season of Deadliest Catch. Our prayers go out to the Harris family.

For people who have never eaten crab and live on the plains of Texas, Captain Phil and the entire crew of the Cornelia Marie captivated our hearts and minds.

I just saw the little RIP bit that Discovery Channel did to honor Capt. Phil Harris. This is the first time that I’ve seen one of those bits and it brought tears to my eyes, not because of the beauty of the tribute but because it greatly saddens me to know he’s gone. It breaks my heart to see my favorite captain on the show is no longer with us, but I am glad to know he is no longer suffering.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the crew, and especially Josh and Jake. He will be greatly missed, and the show will not be the same without him.

Hi there, i’m from Portugal and even this morning Discovery Channel transmited an episode where all the Captains of King Crab Vessels were celebrating the 2008 season. I am a great follower of this program and always cared more for Captain Phill Harris and crew, of course never forgeting his sons, their integrity and love for their father reached in every ones hearts and i remember to do a google search about Cornelia Marie and i was shocked with the loss of Captain Phill, i am sorry, i should have visited the website earlyer, but here in Portugal the “Deadliest Catch” only appears once a week and God knows how far the episodes are from reality, that’s why i say… “I’m sorry”.. My Condolence to the Josh and Jake and their family, that includes the crew of Cornelia Marie…

I Quote Peggy “Thoughts and prayers are with Josh, Jake, and the rest of the Harris family. Captain Phil will live on in all our hearts. Much love and comfort to you all.”

    Thank you..

But he did what he loved all the way to the end ! I don’t think he would have been happy sitting on the side lines knowing he wasn’t on his beloved crab boat.

We watched the deadliest catch faithfully. Sometimes viewing the same episode several times,as not to miss anything. We really enjoyed Capt.Phil and the his crew. Jake and Josh my heart is filled with sadness today as I digest the news of the loss of your father, best friend, Captain, and mentor. My husband just called me as he heard the news on the radio and we were both in a state of shock. We have loved, lived, enjoyed, watching your family and the Crew of the Cornelia Marie since the start of “Deadliest Catch”. We have felt the pain, frustrations, victories and laughter you have all shared with the world and can only imagine how much pain you are going through at this sad time. The Cornelia Marie and her crew were our #1 favorites and my husband often said, “if I could get on crab fishing- that would be the boat I’d pick as my number #1 choice”. May you both find some of your father’s strength and determination to carry on his dream. He said many times how very proud of you both he was and how the last thing he wanted to do was imprint on you everything you needed to know; to carry on without him. Our entire family sends it’s deepest sympathies to you, the crew of the Cornelia Marie and all of your friends from Deadliest Catch Crews and the Crabbing Industry for your Great Loss.

My heart just sank when I heard the news about Phil. My husband and I have been fans of the show for years and Phil was our favorite captain. Though we never met him personally, he felt like a member of our family. I think that is what draws us to the show. We get a small peek into the lives of these wonderfully colorful men, whose hard work, skill and determination would otherwise go unnoticed to us, except for that one hour a week we get to spend with them. What an incredible life. I have a tremendous respect for each man on the show and Phil in particular has always had a special place in my heart. His blunt honestly and sense of humor were my favorite parts of the show. I will miss his smile and his laugh and watching him with his sons. I can’t begin to imagine the loss they must be feeling right now. I am so sorry.

Jake n Josh!! I didn’t know your dad personally but only through watching deadliest Catch! He reminded me so much of my own dad, Ben Jackson, who died 20yrs ago aged 56. He also was a lover of the open water having been at sea since he was 15. He was gruff n a scruff just like Big Phil! I hope the 2 of them are now sat on a cloud looking down n calling a spade a spade!!

Believe me that time does heal the pain but it will never fade the memories!! Your dad will live on, like mine, will live on in our hearts and no-one can take that away!!

Take care both of you and always be safe!!

I am just heartbroken to learn of the passing of Capt. Phil Harris. I never write or blog but the joy I received watching Phil, Josh, Jake and all the crew demands an acknowedgment of what a great loss this is. Look at how many people were touched by his presence either in person or through the show. I thought Phil was smart, funny and the kind of man both women and men look up to. A real man’s man. I can’t imagine him not being in the world. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be missed.

  511. Nathan Keele February 12, 2010 at 4:21 pm #

Phil Harris what a Captain, and a fisherman. I can’t believe he is gone when i heard the news it was horrifying. The show will never be the same without you. R.I.P. CAPTAIN PHIL HARRIS.

  512. Lissa February 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm #

Phil, you were my favorite captain from the very first time I watched the show (season 2 I think it was). In fact, you’re the reason I got hooked. You weren’t afraid to tell it like it is and you never backed down. You taught your sons the value of earning what you get which is so rare these days. You always put your crew first. You will be missed, and you will never be forgotten.

    Jake and Josh-
Your father was truly an amazing individual. I know there are no words that can erase the pain you’re feeling right now. I hope you keep the up the same spirit your father had, I’ve seen charicteristics of your father in you. You two will be and are good men. Stay that way.

    CM Crew-
You will continue to be in my prayers daily. Keep going strong even though right now you probably don’t feel like it. Remember that you have a huge fan base supporting and praying for you.

    Blessings
    Lissa

me and my family have been watching the deadliest catch series since the start, when we heard the news about Phil harris we were devastated.

Phil harris was a great man, with a great Personality who loved his kids, his boat and his crew and shared the love of the ocean with all of us.

I want his kids to know, Phil will never be forgotten, everytime we look at the sea all around the world, we will have Phil in our thoughts.

rest in peace Phil, remember in heaven there is an endless supply of Crab, I’m glad we got to know you the short time you were on this earth.

My heart goes out to his family and friends and to the crew of the Cornelia Marie.

Captain Phil led the pack , in a pack of truly extraordinary men that make up “The Deadliest Catch”. As a Captain he seemed to be one that you could place your absolute trust in to “bring you back safely home”. As a man he seemed to be one that you could trust explicitly at his word. As a father he seemed that rare combination of Hard Nosed and Soft Hearted , depending on what was called for or needed. His crew, friends and family were fortunate to have such a person in thier lives. God Bless Captain Phil!

  521. Sarah February 12, 2010 at 5:17 pm #

My heart goes out to Jake, Josh< and the crew! Cornelia Marie is my favorite boat and Captain Phil was the best!!! I will miss seeing his face on the show.I hope the crew of the CM will keep going and bring in a ton of crab and make Captain Phil smile with pride from the crab grounds in the sky! We love you Captain Phil. R.I.P

My brother has watched Deadliest Catch since its beginning. He was an avid fisherman until an accident put him in a wheelchair. Today he told me that, when he heard of Captain Phil’s passing, he felt as though he had lost a brother. High praise, indeed!

  525. Jessie Morris February 12, 2010 at 5:30 pm #

Thank you Phil, it was an honor getting to understand what all you guys went through fishing for crab. I have watched the show since the 2nd season, and have since bought every DVD I can find. I mill miss seeing your straight forward honesty and the shinanagans between you, Jake, and Josh. Its unbelievable and unbearable that you aren’t with us anymore. You will be sadly missed, and greatly appreciated for your values and your bravery for doing what you did. R.I.P. Captain Phil Harris.

To Josh & Jake, I too have lost a Father, he died, sadly one year ago today, and learning of Phils passing makes it that much more sad. I know he taught both of you well, you will always question if you’ve learned enough, or if you’ve asked every question in order to learn from him. Dont think about the arguments, and dont dwell on any bad times, or missed opportunities, because believ me, you’ll think of a few. Just remember that he did the best he could with both of you and prove it by showing him you’ve turned out exactly the way he had planned. Words or encouragement can help, but I am merely a fan who respects what you guys did together. The pain will always be there, and anyone says it heals with time is wrong, it only becomes easier to live with. I love the show, and hope that both of you realize just how important Phil was to us, the fans. He is your Father, honor him the way you see fit. He is sadly missed, and DC will never be the same without him. With Great respect and sincerety, Jessie Morris

P.S. To the entire crew, and especially Murray, he was a dear friend to all of you, and a great Captain. Honor him well, and remember him even more.

With undying respect to all, Jessie.

My heart gors out to the whole Harris family. i started watching the Deadliest Catch because of Phil. 536. Jason Foley February 12, 2010 at 6:34 pm #

    Jake and Josh,

I lost my pops eleven years ago to a stroke. He was 51, and way too young. He was my hero, and I thought I’d never survive without him… I still needed his advice and counsel. But I realized that Phil Foley left a few months after helping meget through the toughest time of my life… He knew I’d be ok without him.
What I’m saying is, I know it hurts like hell right now, and you can’t think about anything but the hurt. But your Dad only left after he knew you guys would be OK. As the days pass, so will the hurt. Til then, find comfort in knowing that he doesn’t hurt anymore. There will always be an ache in your heart. That too will deminish over time…
Never forget that he loved you two.
He’ll always know you loved him.

    Safe Passage Cap’n Phil.

Capt. Phil was my favorite! He showed so much love for the seas, his fellow crew members and especially his two boys, Josh and Jake. It is probably every fathers dream for his children to walk in his footsteps and carry on the legacy. I can’t wait to see how his two sons continue the journey on the sea for their father. I will miss watching you Phil..but you watch over your boat and your crew and make sure to keep everyone safe. May the Cornelia Marie prosper and may your spirit keep us all going until we all meet up!

I am very sorry to both the Harris Family and to the crew of F/V Cornelia Marie to hear of the sickness, then passing, of Capt. Phil Harris. My father just recently(two months) had a massive stroke as well, and is still in the recovery stages. Watching Deadliest Catch and the interviews with Capt.Harris, I could see in different circumstances my father being a crab fisherman, He and Capt. Harris were that much alike.
If I can offer anything, as a stranger, at this time, I can only offer this…if there is a better place after this life, then Capt. Harris has more than earned it.
You have my prayers and well wishes during this dark time in your lives, but know that your father would want you to continue on in the face of this adversity.
    Sincerely,
    Matthew Schmidt

    “Am Always With You”
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with too many tears, be thankful we had so many good years.
I gave you my love, and you can only guess
How much you’ve given me in happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown, But now it is time I traveled on alone.
So grieve for me awhile, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust
That it is only for awhile that we must part,
So treasure the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away for life goes on,
And if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me, I will be near
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear,
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and a “Welcome Home.” ……Unknown
Dedicated to Capt Phil and his family and friends

the world is worse off today, we lost a fighter and a champion. man, ‘he gave her hell’ and inspired a lot of people. i feel sorry for the boys but they really are men and have been for some time and will be leaders too…just like their ‘old man’. to the CM crew, would he let you give up? no way, he’d say ‘stuff those pots’ and get paid! i will continue to watch the show this season knowing, unfortunately, we are going to lose ‘the best guy in the fleet’ when it’s over. keep on keepin’ on, it is what it is. b-rad m_c_hood.

Nothing could be sadder than seeing the message that someone my husband and I consider to be a member of our family pass away. He was a GOOD MAN; he was firm in a world when “feelings” at work meant more than getting the job done. He wanted to take care of his family and his friends and this was obvious. As Jews we will honor Phil with specific prayers. Every year we will light a candle on this day, the Yahzriet to remember his spirit. An Irish Prayer of a friend of mine reminds us of Phil:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
    And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Watch all Sailors and Seamen and Women, keep them safe, and watch over us all, we need your help.
Shalom our friend you will always be remembered and dearly missed,
    Shalom

I just met Phill when was on a bike trip with friends around Wenatchee WA at Dustys Drive Inn last summer and called him a Dumb Ass for the risk he takes with his crew. I feel like a real Dumb Ass right now. Bud
