Pastor dreams of converting Dutch Harbor bar into shelter for “Deadliest Catch” inspired greenhorns
This video is about a Dutch Harbor Pastor’s dream of converting a closed bar into a shelter for guys trying to get a fishing job. The bar happens to be the notorious “Elbow Room”, a well-know bar that carried a “wild west” reputation in Dutch Harbor. I remember at 14 years of age going to the Elbow Room with the rest of the guys. At that age, I had still heard many stories about this infamous place. I sneaked a few drinks of beer and really felt like I was living on the edge. I returned back to the boat early in the evening with the old man, who never really drank more than a beer. The rest of the crew stayed out and we didn’t seem them again until morning. The next morning I really quizzed the guys for details of the evening, but barely got any words out of them since they were so hungover. They said things got crazy, there were fights and somebody got stabbed.
I also remember guys walking the docks looking for jobs. I don’t remember the old man every hiring a guy from the dock – you’re just taking a huge chance. The news story talks about these guys who come out for the work, but find themselves stranded and with no money.

Wow. I think it’s a great idea! I’m very sorry that the woman’s son was killed but if it is turned into a shelter there wont be any drinking on the property and its a place for people to sleep. not drive. too bad the idea got voted against.

Dutch Harbor needs someplace for stranded fisher men. Has any addition news come forward? Why was the shelter voted against. I’d appreciate any information available. When I appempted to connect to the video link, I was told it was no longer available. Thanks for any information you can give me. It seems like such a worthwhile effort.

Wow.. the Elbow Room. Remember the “blue room”?
Brings back OLD memories.. the jukebox skipped according to the fights that broke out and people that got slammed into it?
Remember Kathy’s Hamburgers? The igloo..
Well, it should of been turned into a shelter. I don’t know how big it would of been. Fat Helen’s spot.. sigh..
memories..

It is sad that people have the “not in my backyard” mentality. Closing their eyes to the problem and turning their backs on the stranded men, doesn’t make them go away. I wonder is the pastor has had any success.

Wow it’s so sad that woman’s son had to die like that. I think that they should go ahead and build the shelter anyway seeing as it would help out a lot of people.
