Before his death on Feb. 9 at 53, Phil Harris, the tough and colorful captain of the Cornelia Marie on Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, fought against all odds, came out of a medically-induced coma following lengthy surgery, spent a few more days with friends and family – and set his two sons on a course for a strong future.
“I think that miraculous recovery that happened so rapidly and blew the doctors’ minds away was so that he could say the things that he had to say to the people he had to say them to,” says Dan Mittman, Harris’s best friend for 36 years.
As Harris recovered from his recent stroke at an Anchorage hospital, “I got five days to actually talk with him,” says son Josh, 26. “We had nine days total that we were there to enjoy a few moments with him. We had our closest people there and it was awesome. ”
Coping with Pain
Phil Harris began this January’s opilio crab-fishing season dealing with injury and concerns about his health on the high seas, according to friends and family. “You talk about pain,” says Josh, “but my dad had four crushed disks in his back, so he had been in pain the whole trip and that affected his fishing, too.”
According to Todd Stanley, the Catch producer and cameraman who’d spent years with Harris, “he seemed like he’d just gotten tireder and tireder. I mean, his pulmonary embolism [in 2008] really did it in for him.”
After hurricane-force winds knocked Harris from his bunk to a desk two years ago, and Stanley and the men on the boat forced Harris back to port to address his blood clot and bad health, the man who had an on-the-job habit of smoking cigarettes, eating high-calorie diets with his crew, drinking cases of Red Bull and downing pots of coffee knew he had to alter his lifestyle.
“He did cut back on energy drinks, quite a bit from what he’d usually do,” says Josh, “but [doctors] have determined that smoking was the cause of this, and that was always his biggest habit. He had changed a lot of his habits but just could never kick the smoking. He started working with that electronic cigarette but, not used to it, he didn’t know how to charge it. He just kept smoking.”
‘Just Paralyzed’
While off-loading crab in Alaska on Jan. 29, Cornelia Marie engineer Steve Ward found Phil Harris on the floor of his room, unable to move. Harris called for son Josh, who in turn, got Todd Stanley to stay with him while Josh called 911.
“The whole left side of his face was in paralysis, and that was hard,” Josh says. “He couldn’t move his arms or anything, he was just paralyzed on the floor.”
After being treated “damn near two years to the day,” says Josh, at the same St. Paul Sound clinic that helped him with his blood clot, Phil was medivacked to a hospital in Anchorage and underwent a long operation.
Crucial Days in Anchorage
A few days after Jan. 31, Phil Harris came out of a medically induced coma and right away started asking for friends to spend time with him.
“Phil and I have sat up and had many arguments about what it is to produce a good story,” says cameraman Stanley. “When he called me into the room that day, after 20 minutes of trying to understand what he was saying, because he could barely talk, he scribbled on a piece of paper, ‘Got to get the ending, ending to the story.’ I said, ‘Do you want me filming?’ He just looked at me with those blue eyes, man, and he was shaking his head yes, and shaking his hand with excitement.”
‘So He Could Be at Peace’
In the four days prior to his death, “he was Phil,” says Mittman. “We sat up and talked until midnight, not constantly because of catnaps, but that was our quiet time away from the cameras. We talked in detail, and he had regrets, and he shared them with me and he probably shared them with his sons. He accomplished what he needed to get done so he could be at peace.”
Harris talked to younger son Jake, 24, whom he told PEOPLE in 2008 “has fishing in his blood,” about the business. “I’m going to be looking at that [captain's] chair in a different way,” Jake says. “We definitely talked about it, but I just didn’t expect this to happen so soon. That’s definitely something where I would take over and take the responsibility.”
As for his older son, “he told me to get out of fishing,” Josh says. “I do love fishing, don’t get me wrong, but it was one of those deals where he wanted to see me do something better. He gave me the encouragement. My life goal was to show him I could be a man, you know, and I could fish, and I did the best job that I could, and he recognized that as being a good job and gave me kudos.”
But on Feb. 9, after walking for a bit and working on physical therapy, Phil Harris sat down in his bed next to best friend Dan Mittman to take a break. “He said, ‘Danny, I don’t feel as good as I did yesterday,’ ” Mittman recalls. “They rolled about five doctors through there and they said, ‘You can stay here,’ but, I understood, though.”
Later that day, Phil died with his closest family and friends surrounding him.
Brave man. Not many people get a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones, but Phil was given that opportunity. Rest in Peace.
May you be safe and at peace now Phil.
you fought well and hard.
Love to all from Australia
Phil’s passing has stirred up a lot of memories in the last 10 day due to similar circumstances when my grandfather passed 20 years ago.
Jake and Josh be strong for each other. Strive each day to carry out your father’s wishes and fulfill his legacy. Learn from the mistakes he made, the ones you have made, and the mistakes you will make in the future. Keep those that are close to you closer. Live each day as if it could be your last and be all that you can be everyday and be all you can be to everyone around you. Listen for your father’s voice when making difficult decisions. Keep you heart open to the Lord and let him continue to bless you.
Every time i watched phil he encouraged me to never give up and to keep going threw the hard times of life. I was shocked to hear that he passed away and i feel like i lost a long time friend. I hope his sons keep the boat going because i know that is what phil would like. He was a great man, and the best captain on the bering sea. Rest in peace Captain you will be greatly missed. The harris family will remain in my prayers threw these vary hard times, stay strong and remember all the good times.
What a legacy! The world has lost a strong man who showed his sons and the world a great work ethic and passion for a difficult job. Thank you Captain Phil for helping my own children understand the hard work it takes to put seafood on the table. Jake and Josh you will make your father proud in whatever you do. Rest in Peace Captain Phil.
All I can say is that I will miss you- you, your ship, and your crew were [are] my very favorite. Farewell~
How unbelievably brave he was at the end.
I started watching Deadliest Catch when it first aired. For me, it was an instant success. My father was a fisherman when he was 13, out of Providence RI. Back in 30s, and he told me stories of what the life was like. My father is long gone now. But watching Deadliest Catch, gave me a glimpse of what his life may have been like. For me the show was more than just a TV show, it helped me to understand my own farther. And watching Capt. Phil Harris, I saw my own farther. Of all the captains, he and Sig were my favorite. But there was just something about Capt. Phil that I found so interesting. Not sure if it was the obvious love he had for both his sons, his pride in what they were doing, and his impatiens with them when they did not live up to his standards. Sure he went off on them a number of times, but no one would ever doubt his great love and pride in them both. I am not sure just what it is I saw in him, but I know what it is I feel now. I feel a personal loss with his passing. Very much like I felt when my own farther passed. I hope we will still get to see his sons, carrying on what their father started. I must say, I think the world is a slightly lesser place with our him. I know I have a empty feeling inside of me, that I have never had with the passing of a TV personality, or any more star. I feel like I have lost a close family member. God bless you Capt. Phil, and you can finally rest in peace, your tanks are full and it is calm seas for you.
We will miss Captain Phil. It was a very sad day when I found out and is still sad that a great man has left our world to go home. But his legacy will live on in our thoughts and hearts. I just read the article and it confuses me that he stated he didn’t feel well and then we are left hanging. I mean was this the part there was nothing left they could do for him or I mean he was up and walking and then died that afternoon. Just makes me wonder. But I wasn’t there for the situation. At least he got those last few days in with his sons and friends. He needed that and his sons needed that. It still makes me sad to think that he’s not here to share his greatness with us. The crew be safe. Jake and Josh follow your dreams your dad was proud of both of you. RIP Captain Phil
There’s a song by Toby Keith and its called “Cryin for Me” and there’s a line in it that I cant help but think of Captain Phil now everytime I hear it “you showed how I’m supposed to live now you showed me how to die”. I have that whole song dedicated to Capt Phil actually.
Rest In Peace Capt. Phil Harris<3
"I'd sing to you just one more time A song for a heart so big God couldn't let it live May angels lead you in"
Phil Harris was a sterling man from what came across through the filming of DC. He was a tough guy most of the time, but managed to show the caring side throughout.
He obviously loved his family and cared very much about hs job.
The Bering Sea and all who sail on her will miss him greatly.
And the show will hopefully continue to show what great, harsh work was done by him and the many more men before him. RIP Phil – you’ll be sorely missed.
I’ve watched DC from the beginning, and Capt Phil reminded me so much of my own dad, who worked a hard job all his life and had to retire early due to a back injury. I hope Phil and his family are all at peace.
I have never missed an episode of DC, and Capt. Phil Harris was y absolute favourite from episode 1. The show won’t be the same without him and he will be truly missed.
I had the chance to meet Captain Phil in late 2009. He came to our town to speak. I was STUPID enough to not do it this time. I thought he would be back at some point and I would have extra cash then. When I heard on the news he passed I cried for hours. I watched only to see Captain Phil. I probably won’t watch again but one thing Captain Phil did teach me was….. Don’t put off til you have extra cash. Take advantage of the situation NOW! If I had done that I would have gotten to meet him and maybe even gotten a hug!!
You will be very much missed. Your ship was my favorite, It will be hard to watch now and not see you anymore. Jake and Josh, I’m glad you got to spend those last moments with him. God Bless you all. Rest in Peace Captain!
No one can prepare us for the death of our parents, as we never think it will happen. My heart and prayers go out to the family as they grieve. Captain Phil was one of a kind and we will all miss him dearly.
you know I can understand and have a very close feeling to this as I almost lost my mother 2 years ago to a stroke. They are a difficult thing to deal with but as long as family (Jake and Josh) stick together..He will live on in all of our hearts. He will be missed!
Long live Captain Phil!
Love and Support,
Krissy
Jake & Josh,
I am very sad to see your father pass. I’m glad you got a chance to talk to him before he went. I lost my father at an early age also. He was a heavy smoker as well. My regret is that he never got to meet my 2 kids, but I’m sure he would dig them.
brought back memories of my dad . grafted all his life ,lived hard died young ,never forgotten.
Our entire family is shaken by Phils death, we didnt “know” him personally but we shared his fishing with him and watched him and his boys on the show. I know Phil isnt in pain anymore, and I pray for his family daily. This world has lost a great man. RIP Phil
The passing of Phil Harris has left a hole in my heart… after watching Deadliest Catch for so many seasons, i felt like Phil was a part of our family..it was devastating news when i heard it, i cried and cried…Jake and Josh, listen to your father’s advice, take what he said to heart, i know you will carry on your father’s legacy, whether its just Jake on the boat as Captain, or both of you, i know the boat will continue to be a success, and Josh if you are not on the boat, i know because of your father’s many talks with you, that you will make the right decisions in your life, and i know you will both make him a proud man, prouder than he ever was..
i know this is a Naval quote, but it seems so appropriate …
TO CAPT PHIL, JAKE, AND JOSE…MAY YOU HAVE “FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS” ALWAYS.
From one hard working blue collar man to another… Rest In Peace Captian. It is well deserved. To the sons. Remember everything that you have been told by you father.
I still cannot believe that Phil is gone. I have watched him since he and his boat came on the show. To me, honestly, I thought of him as another uncle, one that I would have loved to have as my uncle. I miss you, Phil! Josh and Jake, my family and I send you both hugs and our tears over the loss of your dad.
Rest in peace Phil, You will be sadly missed on deadliest catch.
Our thoughts are with you and your family.
You were on hell of a guy.
It is truly amazing how attached you get to someone that you don’t really know. We have watched Deadliest Catch since it first started. I think we all picked our favorites. Captain Phil was my choice, but everyone else in the family loved him too. It is hard to believe that he was taken at such a young age. My heart goes out to his boys, his family and friends. May the angels wrap their arms around you and give you peace.
Captain Phil, you will be missed!
Phil’s passing is a sad loss. He came across as a man who was firm but fair and who you could trust with your life. Watching DC brought back so many memories of my childhood. I grew up as the eldest son of a fisherman who lived and fished through the “Cod Wars” returning to sea many times despite being sunk on 4 occasions. Phil will be sadly missed by all his fans who I believe came to think of him as a very distant but very real friend
As Capt Phil goes to the great fishing grounds in heaven, i dearly hope his sons carry on with fishing. The Cornelia Marie should sail on in his memory. R.I.P Capt Phil
Like so many people I’ve never publicly responded to the passing of a “celebrity”.
Maybe that is because Captain Phill was and still is so much more than that. A man who lived by his beliefs; Who encouraged ambition to his sons and crew; Who understood that “simple” things in life are the basis of it all; A man who took nothing for granted; Who knew that strong-minded is better than stubborn; And above all had a strong dose of humour to lighten the stresses of it all. His final voyage came too soon and feels so personal to many of us because that was the essence of Captain Phil: a personal guy. Calm seas Captain Phil…
We’ll catch you later Phil. Now your fishing in the most beautiful sea. You boys did your dad proud Im sure. Keep doing that. He was a true loved person by all. He will be missed but never forgotten. treasure those last few days.
Boy ! What can I say-Phil was just “larger than life”….so hard to believe he is gone. My best goes out to Josh & Jake . I’ve loved the show from the start-my dad was a charter boat captain off of Long Island,NY and I remember the struggles that he and my brothers went thru during cod fishing season…..I watch the episodes and can remember how great it was when they came home w/ that wonderful smell of fresh fish and salt air ! Phil , like my dad, will always live on in the hearts of his friends and family.
I only spoke to the man once on the phone from him thanking me for a custom knife he asked me to build him. The man was a true Gentleman and I know he’s still a Captain of a boat on a different sea someplace a lot better…Godspeed, Captain Phil…you did real well. You’ll be missed and you’ll have always put the “man handle” on what it’s like to have been a Fisherman doing the job few would dare to do. Smooth seas to you now. Take care boys, don’t ever doubt your Dad’s being cared for now as well.
Ive been a Die hard fan since the begining of the show, 2 1/2 yrs ago I had a HeartAttack and was in a coma for 45 days so I do know what near death is like. but by the Grace of god I was granted a second chance. One the things I Remember of my time in the coma was some of my time in Comercial fishing during the 70s on Cape cod my last trip out we were in a storm,re4minded me of your everyday trips on the Berring seas in ruff weather. I quit fishing then it bothered me so much. Following Phil brought back some great memories , God bless you Captain The Courage you showed and Values you taught yer Sons.
Rest in Peace youll be Remembered by all of Us who walked in Your Shoes .
I was reading this article and remember the pain and loneliness I felt when I read that Capt. Phil died.He was a hell of a man. To have the wisdom he had,he must have lived a tough life. Rest in peace Capt. Phil, rest up high on that mountain, son your work on earth is done.
Captain Phil was an awesome man! He’s the biggest reason I loved Deadliest catch! It’s sad to hear that he passed. My heart goes out to his family and friend’s. He’ll definitely be missed.
Josh, Jake, and family– My sincere condolences go out to you and your family. Always follow your heart and follow the “fart bubbles”. Phil will be always be watching over you… Long live Captain Phil’s LEGACY! Stay strong and make your papa proud, I know he is proud of each and every one of you.
As Vince Gill has said,’Go rest high on that mountain and know your work on earth is done” I am glad that Josh and Jake got to say their good-byes.Just as Phil got to say what he needed to.He was a hell of a man,and he did things his way. Grant,Josh andJake ,Thank you for sharing your son and father. My prayers continue for all of you.
Wow. What an amazing guy.
I think the one thing that really stood out for me was how Phil was with his boys. They had to earn what they got, and you could see in his eyes how much he loved them. He was genuine. The world is going to miss him. Josh and Jake, I am sure through all the taping, you probably never realized how much your family would touch so many people.
Bless your family and your friends.
Even now I cry from the loss of my Dad. He was a New England fisherman, joined the Navy, came home, got his boat and lived for the sea. That’s their first mistress as cruel as she can be. That sea took my dad,and Capt. Phil gave me my dad back and it’s like losing him all over again. God Bless all the weather worn heroes of the sea.
Josh, Jake & family,
I am so sorry and wish to express my condolences to you all. It seems silly to do so considering I know none of you but watching Deadliest Catch gave me the greatest of understandings about what the men are made of who take on such a career and makes me immediately have respect for that, you must be brave a courageous to fish as you all do. I loved Captain Phil for telling it like it was, he was also a great father from what I gather. My heart goes to you all. RIP Captain Phil.
I had 6 days with my daddy before he passed. There is not enough money to take, for the lessons I learned, in those 6 days. One day, years from now, you boys will look back on those 6 days and the best and worst of your life. It will hurt. It will hurt worse than you ever thought possible. No, time will not take away the pain but, it will help to ease the painful response to the memories. I sit here 9 years later knowing exactly what you feel like and for that I am sorry. Your father loved you and that was evident in everything he did. Go forward and remember that your father left you the most precious gifts of all. Your name, untarnished, and memories.
The waters of the Bering Sea will no longer be the same.
May he sail the seas of heaven, and watch down upon us, and guide us through our own ruff waters, into the safety of our loved ones.
God Speed, Captain Phil.
We Will Miss You.
So sorry to hear about Captain Phil’s passing! I loved watching to see what would happen next — good or bad. I also loved watching, the last few years, how he interacted with his 2 children (Jake and Josh). I will keep all involved in my thoughts and prayers for as long as is needed. I also would like to send my condolences to all members of the Cornelia Marie and Harris families. RIP forever, Cap’n!
we will really miss you captain and hope you two jake and josh will keep on keeping on on the Corelia marie for your father
A true man…they are far and few between. You will be missed, Capt. Phil.
My condolences to the family of Captain Phil.We thank you for the many memories, you were a true captain. I lost my dad with a blood clot to the leg, death is always sad. I hope out of this the boys learn a lesson, and that is Dont smoke, rest peacefully Captain Phil and thanks for the wonderful memories.
Jake & Josh, be strong for each other now and always. Our prayers are with you both and the rest of the Harris family, asking for strength, faith and hope for each and every one of you. Believing in God, you will all be united again one day, fishing the seas of Heaven and gaining the all-time ultimate catch. Please try to find comfort in that thought. We both lost our fathers 7 and 10 years ago so we understand what you’re feeling; that big hole that you feel in your chests will heal as time passes. Wishing you all the best in your time of need…Godspeed.
Capt. Phil can never really be gone. He lives on in his sons and in all those who loved him. Jake and Josh, my heart breaks for you. The Cornelia Marie and her crew have lost a great leader and friend. The world has lost one of it’s finest souls.
A man’s man, he did what he did to the best of his talent, made no excuses for himself. He will be missed.
here’s to a brave and lovely soul,he will be dearly missed……..that story brings tears to my eyes but i was so glad to read it….i think any fan of the show felt like they were there until the end with him………sail away now capt. phil, happy fishing from now on…………..
It is so sad. I get teary eyed everytime I read a story from someone who loved him. The show would not be the same without him and he will surely be missed. Prayers and love to all his family and friends.
bless the whole family. i really enjoyed the boys of the cornelia marie and it won’t be the same without capt. phil there. god bless all.
It is a sad day today after reading the passing of Captain Phil.
I really liked him,and the show will not be the same without him. I just laugh when ever he was having trouble with his son I would think of my own son and how much we would say the same things. But deep down just like I we really love those little trouble maker. It like they would put a little more life in us giving us a good laugh but at the same time wanting to eat them.
I say he with god doing the fishing for heven! Made he rest in peace.
I really feel this family. They will be in my prayers. The show definitely will not be the same without him.
Capt. Phil and the boys of the Cornelia Marie were and always will be my favorites. Capt Phil will be missed a great deal. Jake it will take a while to step into your fathers shoes but listen to all he told you an follow it. Live a healthy life style it is your chance to break the hard living style. It’s what he would want. Prayers to you and your entire family.
We jsut learned of this very sad padding. I understand his “hard headedness”. I am a transplant patient who is stubborn and I think that helps to pull people like us out of situations that most don’t recover from. Phil had that determination in everything he seemed to do. I hope he passed this trait on to his boys so they can be the same type of man Phil was. God Bless
Rest in peace Phil….. We will miss you
It is truly a strange new world. I have had the honor and priviledge of knowing man who is as honest as the day is long and one genuinly close to the Earth. Although I have not physically met Captain Phil or his family, I feel that I know the man. As for me, I will miss him and the man. He has left a big foot print in my life. Here’s to you Captain Phil!
He was a strong man with a good sense of humor. excellent fisherman. our thought and prayers go out to family and friends.
My thoughts are on the good captain and the loved ones he so bravely left behind. He will be missed and I beleive by everyone who watched the show and the ones who had the pleasure to really know him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Capt Phil and the Cornelia Marie was the ship we loved to watch. Phil was a no nonsense kind of man with a good heart it seems. He will truly be missed. To his wife, and boys, we don’t even have the words to express our sympathies. He gave us great moments and we loved watching him, especially with his boys, it will be different to watch the show with him.
We feel like Phil and the boys are family, and miss him terribly already. Our hearts go out to everyone who loved him, and we thank you for sharing him with us all these years. I’m glad he had the blessing of time with the people he loved, and was able to bless them with his love.
rest in peace phil, u will b missed. sorry for the lose harris family. will miss him on the so.
It is so sad. Losing someone so special is a tragedy. The amount of love Phil had for Josh and Jake was out of this world, you could tell that just by knowing them through the TV. And they always wanted to make him proud. (or get him fired up) I am a fellow Washingtonian like Phil and his sons, and I want Josh and Jake to know that I am praying for them, and to hang in there and be there for eachother. Your Dad is watching over you still so don’t stop being yourselves continue to make him proud.
My deepest sympathies. This was a great story about a great man. Captain Phil was my absolute favorite. I watched because of him. He seemed to be the most real. I don’t know what the show will be like now without him. You will be missed!!!!
my heart is aching since the lost of phil. my heart goes out to his family and closest friends. it will take time to heal the pain.the boys will remember the good and happy times that they have spent with their dad.he will be forever missed on the show and it will not be the same without him sitting in that captain’s chair barking orders.but somewhere he is sitting in a differnet captain’s chair now, looking sown and guiding his sons in their everyday adventures. so to family and friends may god bless and take care.
I have my flag at half mast for this wonderful man and his family. I wanted everyone who asked me why?. So I can say that Capt. Phil Harris did not die in vein, he will be remembered in the hearts of all he shared his life with.
my thoughts and prayers are with his family and crew…the show will definitly not be the same he will be deeply mised…RIP Captain Phil
Jake, how you gonna get arrested bro?!? Tough times for the family. So damn sad. We love you guys. Stay strong!
My prayers are with Jake and Josh. As a fan I am still dealing with this as we all are. Who would think somebody I would probably never meet would touch all of our lives so much with his up front and honest points of view.
Smooth sailing Capt. Phil.
It is so odd to feel such a loss over someone I never met, but my heart is just broken at the thought of never being able to watch Capt. Phil again. I think that one of the reasons he was always my favorite on the show – besides his hysterical sense of humor and the fact that he was one sexy man – is that you could see how much he loved his sons, even when they were making him crazy, and he wasn’t afraid to show it or talk about it. God bless you, Capt. Phil and rest in peace. You will be missed. Jake and Josh… you are in my prayers and I hope you realized how much your Dad loved you. Keep on making him proud.
It’s a tragedy to lose someone that brought joy to so many people, over the last 5 seasons we loyal viewers of the show began to see you all almost as personal friends, and that is how Capt Phil’s passing feels, just like I lost a close friend.
I just want you all to know my prayers and thoughts are with you all, especially Josh and Jake, may the Harris family find solace in this time of loss and sadness and I hope it helps them to know Capt. Phil will be missed.
I will miss seeing you every time the show is on the air.I fill like I lost a frend.I pray that you have fare wind and that you have full pots.Thank you for the short time I got to know you.To your family My deepest love and I will pray for you all. YOURS RICHARD GALLAGHER
R.I.P. Captain Phil – You wore your heart on your sleeve and we loved you for that.
RIP Captain Phil. Our thoughts are with your family and the Cornelia Marie family. Sleep well sailor!
Gone Fishin’.
Catch you later Phil.
Thank you for the lessons.
dave.
What a charachter, he will be sadly missed
RIP Captain Phil. Our thoughts and prayers are with your, your boys and the Cornelia Marie family.
We’ll keep looking for those fart bubbles! xoxo
TO THE HARRRIS FAMILY IM 12 YEARS OLD I LOVED WATCHING THE DEDLEST CATCH MR HARRIS WAS MY FAVORENT CAPATIN I PLAY MY GAME ON XBOX ALL THE TIME I WILL MISS HIM
Capt.Phil you were one of the reasons I watch this great show, now you can look down and protect your crew from above,my condolences to the harris family. Godspeed capt.
my heart goes out to family and friends of Capt. Phil. I lost my father almost 5 years ago now and sometimes it just feels like it was yesterday so I understand the pain and sadness they are going through. You were are all lucky to have him in your life and to be there with him his final days and when he passed. Cherish those final days that you all spent with him and those conversations. Although I never met him and can only go by what I know of him from the show and from what I have read from those that did know him he seemed like a great, giving man that left a mark on everyone he met. He will be missed by many. I would have given anything to have been able to speak to my father durring his final days but he was on a ventilator and wasnt able to speak. My deepest and most sincere condoleces to all that knew and loved Capt. Phil.
What a blessing that Phil’s family, especially his boys, and friends had a few days of special time with Phil. As much as I’m sure they didn’t want to, they had an opportunity to say goodbye, and so did Phil. Most don’t get this secial gift. Godspeed Phil.
Beautiful…thats awsome, not everone has an opertunity to experience such a respectful death…you all should be thankful that Captain Phil allowed everyone involved such an experience. To share such a personal moment is truely one of mans greatest gift….thanks you Phil for again showing me not only how to live but how to die. My own father did the same for me.
To sons Jake & Josh, Your Dad touched a lot of people for a reason, you two. As long as we find a way to remember him, he’s not really gone. You two are that way. Live your lives in health and happiness. That’s what your Dad wanted and it came through in everything he said and did. The pain will eventually subside. He will never be forgotten by many of people, myself included. Rest in Peace, Phil. Enjoy the happy fishing grounds in Heaven!
I will miss remember, and respect your life. THANK YOU CAPTAIN PHIL
If there’s such a thing as a ‘good death,’ and I believe there is, Phil had one. The first blood clot alerted him he was on deadline. He was able to tell you boys, family and friends what you all meant to him. What a guy! Thank You God, that You gave him this extra time!
Jake and Josh, you’re in my prayers. God bless you. It was all on film how very much he loved you. And how much you loved him. I have a dynamic Dad in heaven too and you’ll be amazed at how much he will still be with you.
My wife and I have been watching deadliest Catch from the very beginning and have never missed an episode. Phil was our favorite Captain not because he was a great fisherman but because of the way he treated his family and friends. You have to be tough to be a Captian but we could see that Phil had a gentler side as well and that was what made us love him so much.
Not only will he be missed by his family and friends but his greatest fans as well!!! Josh and Jake – Remember that your “Dad” was not only a great father but a great man as well. HE WILL BE MISSED GREATLY!!!!!!! A part of our life has gone but he will be there always in our hearts!
Deadliest Catch will not be the same without Capt Phil. To his son’s, I thought your dad was terrific, his gruffnes, manners, and toughness reminded me in my younger days, I understood your dad. Even though he was this way, it was his way of trying to make you better men for this world. God Bless you and crew of the Cornelia Marie. From my Navy days: Phil will have forever now, Fair Winds and Following Sea’s. Rest in peace shipmate.
Rest in peach Phil. May your sons and all of your family take solace in knowing you reached many, many people. Know that you will be missed by many – the world will not be the same without him.
Peaceful sleep, Phil. You done good pal, thanks for the memories.

I am so sorry to hear about CApt Phil. My heart felt condolesences to his sons.
I was actually shocked to read it on the tv and ran to the computer to find out more.
I felt like I knew him and am truly sad.
I pray that Jake and Josh have peace in their hearts that they knew their dad and had the relationship that they did.
I know I will grieve the loss of him while watching this season, it will NOT be the same without him.
He will truly be missed.
RIP PHIL, CONDOLENCE TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
HE WAS THE REASON I WATCHED THE SHOW ORIGINALY. PHIL REMINDS OF A GOOD FRIEND WHO HAS ALSO PAST.
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice. You Lived Your life to the Fullest,an bestoyed your legasey to Your Sons. Rest in Peace Phil
My condolences to Phil’s family and friends in their time of need. I only know of Phil Harris through the Deadliest Catch series, but when i heard of his death I certainly cried. He was one of the most vivacious men I’ve every seen. He will be missed by the world.
We were profoundly sad to hear of the loss of Captain Phil. We enjoyed watching him and his sons and crew and he added so much “flavor” to the show. We could tell his bark was worse than his bite and that he had a huge heart. We have two boys and had to laugh at the exchanges sometimes. So sorry to his family, friends and coworkers. He will be missed in so many ways. Blessings.
REST IN PEACE CAPTAIN PHIL .. I never got a chacne to meet him in person but I have always loved the show and hearing him pass away brought tears to my eyes…for someone to cry for somebody they do not know just shows you how much of an influence that person was on them. See you in another life uncle Phil
I FEEL LIKE I LOST A GREAT FRIEND.
I guess that shows the power of the Man that came across the screen and made everyone feel like we knew him. If you think about It that really shows how Specal he was.
YOU WILL BE MISSED PHIL.
but rest easy you taught your boys well.
god bless to you all
This is for the entire deadliest catch family,
My families thoughts and prayers go out to all of you, during this tough and horrible time.
The show, and the boat won’t be the same without Capt Phil.
You just have to remeber, this is what Phil loved to do. Now you just have to keep telling yourself, he’s in a better place now.just because he not here physically doesn’t mean he’s not there with all you guys.
Even though I didn’t know Phil personally, He will be greatly missed. Just take it one day at a time.
I bet that the Capt.already up there crabbing, doing what he loved.
With that being said our thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew a truely special man. Let the legacy of Phil Harris & the Corniella Marie conquer on.
Truely sorry,
The Kandalepas
Fair winds and following seas Captain Phil you will be missed. Your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Just turned on “Deadliest Catch” and saw Captain Phil’s picture with those dates. It was like one of our own family had passed. We have grown to love all these rough and rowdy guys over the years, and we sometimes made a joke of counting the number of “bleeps” in each one’s conversations. Phil was often the winner, but we were never in doubt how much he cared about family and crew. He will be greatly missed. Love & prayers to his family/friends. <3
On the news out of Seattle Wa. this morning it said that Jake was pick up for a DUI last night. 2/19/10 in Seattle Wa.
The hurt from there Dad passing as he did, they should not even had said anything about the DUI……
If it was anyone else out of Seattle or Tacoma Wa.,, there would have not been anything said about it.
Its not right the way things our done about giving out news on some people.
The best to you Jake and Josh and again you Dad will always be by your side.
Dan from Sequim Wa.
Phil sure will be missed. I hope the first show of the new season, the other captains do a tribute to him. I read that Jake and Josh want to sprinkle his ashes out in the Bering Sea. I like that because Phil would want to be where he was the most happiest. In the sea with his crabs.
Phil was a decent guy. I have loved the way he was able to work alongside his sons. Phil was so wise to tell the boys that they have what it takes. I think when you lose a father, there can be those times when you have doubts and fears because that support is gone. But it is clear to me that Phil loved his boys and is very proud of them.
Now it is their time to shine.
These are the hardest days. My father passed 2/5/2010 and will say to his sons, my brother and I are still healing and you will too. Take one day at a time. Breath. Fish. And follow your dreams with the gusto your father followed his dreams…wherever they lead you. -therp
Capt. Phil will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Prayers go out to his freinds and family. The show definately will not be the same and his memory will live on. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Hang in there Jake and Josh and just remember every time you are on the sea he is right there with you always
“To Captan Phil” You put a large chapter in the history of the Bering Sea. Doing so you reached in the hearts of many people that have so much respect for what you have acomplished. I looked up to you the first time I saw you on the Deadliest Catch show. You lived the life of a great Captain, fisherman, father, mentor and so much more…… Farewell
I didn’t know you personally felt like I did may your family and crew be comforted during these tough times. RIP FRIEND
Phil, I loved your determination and the take no crap attitude you displayed all the while letting us see your gentle side. My heart goes out to your family and crew. Deadliest Catch will never be the same without you.
Godspeed and Semper Fi
My husband and I loved the excitement of yhe catch, and Capt. Harris was the greatest. My husband was a Lobster/Shrimp fisherman out of Rockland, Maine so we know the dangers and szcrifice of the ocean fisherman. They are a devoted family and dearly respect their Captain. May God be with all of you, especially the Captains wife and sons. Capt. Phil will be greatly missed!
Josh and Jake..I’am truly sorry for your loss..hang tuff, time will heal the pain..thank you for shareing your lives with us..your dad will be missed..I wish you the best in thease diffacult times..stay strong..my thoughts and prays are with you and all the men who risk there lives to put crab on our table
Very sad to here of Captain Phils passing. He made me want to watch the Deadliest Catch. Made me appreciate the hard jobs people do that folks like myself never thought about.
to josh and jake, your father is in heaven now and at peace. go get on the boat in oct. and make him proud. RIP PHIL HARRIS
Phil Harris was my favorite captain on Deadliest Catch – great guy; great father; great leader. However, his death should be a warning to anyone who abuses his body the way Phil did. Tragic but…what did you expect?
Captain Phil I will miss you! My family watches Deadliest Catch every Sat. I love the way you and your sons tell it like it is! Boys whatever your calling is you know your father will shine upon you both. You will be in your daily prayers. Best of luck to you both!
I am still shocked and so very sad about the loss of such a wonderful man, father, captain. He and his family spent hours in my living room, (although they don’t know that) and although I will continue to watch the show, it will not be the same without Phil Harris. I love his crew, his sons, and, the Cornelia Marie. My heart goes out to the entire family. Thank you for giving me a chance to say this.
Goodbye to a true American hero. A real inspiration. My condolences to his family and many friends.
Jake and Josh man I know the words of stranger don’t mean much but still I am so sorry for you both. You could see on the show how very much your Pops loves you. I have watched the show since the start your dad was always my favorite Captain mostly because of the love I saw he had for his boys.My heart goes out to you both.Keep your heads up,cry when you need to and know he will always love you. Thats what moms and dads do.
I will miss you Phil, God bless you and your family, Jake and Josh Im sorry for your loss.
God Bless you both.
He was a family man and he was a great provider. He was kind to his peers and co-workers a great guy to all.
I worked for a Tug Boat company for years. I have worked with good captains and a few bad ones. As I watched the Catch, one of my all-time favorite shows, I always told my wife – I’d work for Captain Phil ANYTIME!!!!
It’s hard to explain but I just had a load of respect for his abilities on the water, and he was a fun guy to watch. He felt like a real good friend.
I cannot believe I am sitting here crying … it’s not like I knew the Capt. personally, but through the seasons, I have become vested in the tough job all the fishermen do fighting the elements and the sea.
To Josh, your father was right, you should go an do other things. Not because you weren’t a good crabman, but because he knew you wanted something else. You proved to him that you are an outstanding son to him. Remember that you did have these last few years together doing what he loved with you by his side. You gave him a gift that is priceless.
To Jake, you are the son to follow in your father’s footsteps. You still have a lot to learn, but you have the best start you could have … from your father’s hands. Remember, it is not about fame or fortune, it is about getting the job done and everyone home safe and sound.
Smooth sailing and clear skies to Captain Phil. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on in all of us. I raise a cold one in his honor. Cheers.
sorry for the death of your father my prayers go out to you guys and the crew and family
I WATCHED THE DEADLLEST CATCH AND I FELL SORRY AND MORN OF THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN PHILL HARRIS AND I AM GOING TO KEEP HIS FAMILY IM MY PRAYER AND I HER BY ALSO LIKE TO WILL KEEP THE DEADLEST CATCH FAMILY AND THE FAMILY OF THE CORNILELIA MARINE IN MY PRAYERS ABOUT THERE LOST AS WELL. My heart is broken to hear of the passing of the one and only Capt. Phil Harris. To his family and friends, may God give you the strength to carry on in his memory. The earth lost a great soul on February 9th. God Bless.
I love watching the show cuz of ur father loved him lots sorry to know he is gone it hurts me deeply but he will be with us in sprit on that boat and u need to do what u can. And i love u guys stay strong and i pray for u and stay strong love and pray for ever one there. thank you .
Even though I do not know any of you personally, I feel as though I have lost a member of my family. Jake and Josh—My thoughts are with you both. To the crew—you were led by one of the best. Captain Phil will be greatly missed.
Josh and Jake, It was so clear – even to this stranger that your Dad loved you and was proud of you both. You could see it in his eyes when he spoke of you, even when you were “testing his nerves”. I am thankful have gotten to share time with you and your father while watching the show. I only wish I could have met him in person. Thank you and God Bless you both.
Rest Captain rest…
your sons will take the wheel.
May the seas heave a huge sigh at the loss of a great steward. Men like Phil are the kind who raised me, whether logging the hills, mining deep in the mountains, or navigating the cold waters of North America. He is among those who rank as true heroes, those who lead and those who teach boys to be men, those who leave an undying legacy to all; May he watch over and guide his worthy compatriots on the Bering Sea.
My husband is a fishing captain here in Cancun, Mexico. One show we would never disagree on watching is the deadliest catch. Needless to say our favorite was Capt. Harris and crew of the Cornelia Marie. Our prayers go out to his family and friends.
Im so sorry for your loss i will keep you guys on my prayers. Deadliest catch will never be the same, its sad to see the old deadliest catch, phil was the best capt. josh, make your dad proud this season, altough you had made him proud enough before he died its your turn to shin upon him now. God bless you and your family.
Jake, Josh, I want you to know that your father lives. He is watching over you and has great expectations for you. Josh you need to stick around for a little while fishing with your brother and supporting him. I am the eldest in my family. I know the responsibilities of setting the example and being supportive. I have also been on the other end. I didn’t set the example and I let my family down, as well as myself. You have a chance to be humble and helpful to your brother, before you leave fishing to start your own life’s work. Jake. You need as my father, (a retired Marine) told all of us, to keep your eyes and ears open and mouth shut. You will skipper the boat, but you must first be a skipper to yourself. Listen to the crew and when the time is right you and they will know it. Take pride in your vocation, take pride in yourself, and most importantly take pride in following in your fathers footsteps. May God Bless and Keep you. Mike
PHIL WAS THE MAN!!! HE WAS THE COOLIEST CAPTAIN AND DID HIS JOB TO THE FULLIEST… I DON’T THINK I CAN WATCH THE PAST SEASONS ANYMORE JUST KNOWING THAT HE IS NOE GONE… I THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS 2 BOYS AND THE REST OF HIS FAMILY… BEST OF LUCK IN THE FUTURE GUYS! KEEP YOUR DAD’S BOAT SAILING FOR ANOTHER 53 YEARS IF POSSIBLE…
I have watched the show from the beginning, and I tell you now Deadliest Catch will never be the same. I will keep the Captain, and his family and friends in my prayers. Jake and Josh…remember your father when you are at the wheel and know he is with you always. I am so sorry for loss. Captain Phill Harris will be terribly missed.
Hi Josh and Jake..
I’m From Denmark and I just heard that your father is dead.. And I am deeply sorry for your loss.
It´s a loss of a captain there will never be forgotten.
“When anyone asks me how I can best describe my experience in nearly forty years at sea, I merely say, uneventful but exciting.
Not even the sea can take the life of one who has experienced the worst”
Capt. Edward J. Smith 1911
Rest In Peace Phil Harris
I haven’t watched Deadliest Catch for awhile, because here in the Philippines it airs late at night, but when I visited the Cornelia Marie website, I saw the news, and this is indeed shocking. Captain Phil to me was the color of The Deadliest Catch, with his cheerful demeanor despite the cracking pressure.
A final salute for Good Ol’ Captain Phil!
to jake ,josh and the rest of the family deepest sympathy i know what its like to lose a dad my thoughts and prayers are with you all…
To the family of Phil Harris,
I have watched Deadliest Catch since the beginning and have loved Phil and the Cornelia Marie. My prayers are with his family. Have a safe trip this year crabbing as I am sure Phil would want you to do.
Take care. I’m sure God loves crab legs too.
Phil reminded me a lot of my own Dad, in so many ways. He died young too, about a dozen years ago. The pain never goes away, or becomes less. You only feel it less often. Today, reading about Phil brought back the exact same wrecking ball through my chest heartache. Just as strong as the day it happened. Jake and Josh, try not to lose yourself too much… I know right now the world has stopped spinning. Good luck to ya -
I was stunned to hear of the loss of Captain Phil Harris. I immeditaley thought of the boys, Josh and Jake, and how wonderful it was that they had the opportunity to spend that quality time with their Dad fishing together.
I lost my mom 1 year ago on January 1, 2009. It still doesn’t feel real for me. Still even now, every once and awhile, I will pick up the phone to call my mom and tell her about such and such and then I remember…………she is no longer with me…………I really do miss my mom.
Be easy on yourselves and remember to do what your Dad would have wanted you to do…………move forward and get the job done!
My sons and I were sad to hear of your father’s passing. From news here it sounds like the transtion has been rough. Never forget that you are not alone, there is family in San Diego that is watching and learning from all that you do. My youngest son said “they were the one’s that argue alot”, and then said “but they seem to really care about each other”. Passion is what life is all about. Your father was full of passion, for you, for work, for life…
Hey josh and jake, i would like to thank you for giving us all a chance to be with you and your father on the boat. Cornelia Marie was always my favorite to watch and i have learned countless things about life and friendships unlike any other garbage TV show. Your father will always be missed and he passed away as a true hero that was idolized by so many people. I wish you best of luck and you should feel lucky that you have someone like Phil as your father that always did, and always will love you.
To the family of Captain Phil Harris, Im so sorry to hear of your recent loss. As I’m watching episodes of Deadliest Catch, I’m sitting hear with tears in my eyes because we all loss such a GREAT MAN! Even though many of us may have not known Captain Phil as well as the family and close friends, we too have loss someone special, thanks to the Discovery Channel. Jake & Josh, always know that your Dad is with you. Even though he isn’t here physically, but is here in spirit. You will feel him with you and don’t doubt his teachings and know that he truly loved you. When you go out to sea, you will know the great wisdom and strenght that he gave you. I also heard that your dad came out of acoma to speak to you. What a great gift your dad was able to give to you. He obviously knew that his great mission was complete and that he could leave legacy to you boys for you to take over. Keep his words in your heart and always remember his great spirit is with you. God Bless and you will be in our thoughts a prayers.
Jake and Josh… I know there are hundreds of notes but I just wanted to say that I to was very close to my dad and worked in the steel industry for over 20 years with him. when he died of a heart attack 2 years ago I thought I would die right along with him. All I can say is he will always be with you, and it will never be easy but u start to accept as best you can. My thought and prayers are with both of you…….
What a sad sad day when Phil left our world. His hardworking, rough and gruff to the point persona was a welcome relief in a world full of nansy pansies too afraid to get their hands dirty. Only now that Phil’s conquering the seas in the great beyond will he truly know the extent of his world wide appeal. Much love and strength to his family and friends. His legacy to Jake and Josh is whatever is best for them. Do it justice guys. R.I.P Phil.
To the family/crew I am so sorry for your loss of a great man. The boat he ran was the reason that I watched the show. Phil will be missed but NEVER forgotten. I am still in shock. R.I.P Phil. We all know that you will be watching over your crew getting them home safe along well with the other boats and there crews.
You will be greatly missed. You were one of my most favorite captains/boats. I have been through alot of loss myself the last few years and it’s not easy. You brothers take care of each other. Any support offered to you, take it. It’s so helpful.
To Phil’s wife and children:
I am sorry that Phil left so early. I believe everyone that watched the show understands a piece of your family. Remember the good – remember you don’t have to make anyone proud by doing anything else. He is already proud of you. That was already done when he was here.
I am very sorry to hear that and am in shock. I loved the show and watching the family that worked together. My sympathy goes out to all: his family, friends, and fans. And may God help the boys through their loss. He will be missed!
I can only wish my own father was such a man who cared as deeply as capt. harris obviously did for his sons and their future. I hope the boys know how truly blessed they were to have Phil. All my best wishes to the harris family, as well as the crew of the Cornelia Marie
Josh and Jake,
keep the Faith.. You’re dad will always be with you. I have watched DEADLIEST CATCH for seasons now. I have enjoyed every show. Biting my nails with some. God be with you both, and the rest of your family. Just know that Phil will always be around in one way or another to let you know, that he’s still here… Stay safe. My prayers goes out to you both… Phil we all love ya, and we will never forget you.
I’ve never met Captain Phil Harris, but why do I feel so sad, like I lost a family member?? Couldn’t bring myself to watch the Catch marathon…..
The new season will be tough…RIP Phil
may the wind be at his back and may his pots always be full.i’ll drink a duck fart to his memory! to a good captain from a shipwrecked sailor god speed, you will be missed.family most stay stong in times of sorrow be carefull out there
Beloved Capt. Phil My heart broke when I heard the news of your final sail. you were the finest captin out there, brave and fair. I’m praying for the family. stay strong boys. God bless you .Get along good with each other and captain the Cornelia Marie together.Your father was a great man with alot of heart and will be greatly missed.
Dear Jake and Josh: I was stunned this evening when I found out that your dad past away. I don’t get a chance to catch up on news too much and tonight I was spending time with my son and the marathon was on and he told me your dad passed away. Having lost my father, my heart goes out to you both. I felt like I knew your family and although he acted tough a lot of times, I always felt he was a teddy bear inside. May God continue to watch over you both and keep you strong. You will always have your father’s spirit with you and he will always be out there on the sea with you. Stay strong.
Oh my God Josh and Jake! Through my un-controllable sobbing I’m at a loss for words. I just keep saying, “there’s no way this can be true!” Your dad IS my favorite captain of the series…it can’t be deadliest catch without him! I was actually watching the show when it showed a picture of your dad at the bottom of the screen with his dates. I started crying instantly and grabbed Google only to find what you said about his passing. I’m just so sorry! I can’t imagine what you’re going through! & hope such a strong, wise, giving, opinionated soul is done up “philly” style. That man has too much humor to go quietly. And me and my family wish you love and faith through your grieving. And know, your dad WILL NOT be forgotten where I’m from!
Phil is what kept me watching the show more so than the others. He was a ruff tuff biker Hottie
. And his boy’s take after him in that as well. There was more to him than just that, it was almost like a spiritual pull towards him. I do believe that he will be fishing with his boy’s always and that they will feel him when he is there. He will never be forgotten ever. Blessed be
Jake and Josh,
Our family prays for you, we all love you and Capt. Phil. We will miss him.
A Paiute Medicine Song:
Now all my singing Dreams are gone,
But none knows where they have fled
Nor by what trails they have left me.
Return, O Dreams of my heart,
And sing in the Summer twilight,
By the creek and the almond thicket
And the field that is bordered with lupins!
Now is my refuge to seek
In the hollow of friendly shoulders,
Since the singing is stopped in my pulse
And the earth and the sky refuse me;
Now must I hold by the eyes of a friend
When the high white stars are unfriendly.
Over-sweet is the refuge for trusting;
Return and sing, O my Dreams,
In the dewy and palpitant pastures,
Till the love of living awakes
And the strength of the hills to uphold me.
You all have been brave to let the world watch your family stretch and grow as you all tried to figure out your places in the family business. Your dad was the most colorful character out there and we have all enjoyed “knowing him” through the Deadliest Catch. You can consider yourselves luckier than most to have shared the strong experiences you did, with a man who loved what he did and who loved you so much.
man what a loss phil was one of our favorites on the show. josh and jake we will miss your dad but carry on the name and god bless both of you and your families thanks cox racng.
Dear Jake,Josh and Family, sorry to hear about your loss was a great shock to all of us. My family will be praying for yours. You had a great father and Captain we will sorely miss your father, you will never be forgotten especially the humor and laughter you guys put on the show always loved watching you keep up the faith and never forget you will be remembered and loved
I just wanted to offer my condolences to the Harris family & crew of the Cornelia Marie. I have watched the show for many years and was very sad when Capt. Phil was unable to be there due to his health.
I feel that he was a good man and I know he will be missed terribly. My prayers are with all of you.
Saw the dedication on the show today and could not believe it. I had to come and look to find out what happened. I will miss captain Phil hugely. He made the show so fun. I loved his raw commentary. I loved the way he enjoyed tormenting his sons cause that is how I am with my kids (It develops character) and Phil was definitely a character . A salt of the earth old salt. May God give him rest and peace and fair sky’s and heavy pots.
Josh & Jake…
As I sat watching the “Catch” marathon today…a thought hit me…
You have a beautiful gift from your father…you have hours and hours of videos to see him, remember him, hear his voice…and to someday share with your children to show them what their grandpa did, how he did it, and how he loved it. I lost my dad when I was 13…in the early 80s…before cam corders were a big thing,so I can’t remember his voice or his movements or mannerisms. Not many people have what you had, sharing his work, his love, and his life on a 24/7 basis, and having such a great memoir for the experience….
My thoughts, prayers, and love are sent to you both and all the members of the Cornelia Marie family….Captain Phil will live on in all of you, and be remembered by millions across the world.
To you ad ur family, prayers and strength =-)
So sorry for your loss. Captain Phil was one that we all looked forward to seeing on the Deadliest Catch. Surely, and I am going back to my heritage, anyone from a fishing village feels the loss, just as it would be one of our own. God speed be with you and your family during this time. Lots of love and prayers from Bayou La Batre, Alabama.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Capt. Phil Harris, may God be with all of y’all
God speed to you and yours. To me he was like the Dale Earnhardt of fisherman. No empty pots ever again go get em boys. Go Crabbin
I was devastated when I heard of the passing of Phil Harris. He, and everyone else on that ship, was what kept me watching.
You all have my condolences, along with numerous others here in Southern Oregon. I send my prayers out to the friends and family of Phil, and wish nothing but the best for you all.
Rest in Peace Captain

I’ve spent about a week now in disbelief -
it just doesn’t seem possible that Capt. Phil is gone. He was by far my favorite on Deadliest Catch – I felt as if I actually knew him, and he will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his family – losing a loved one is never easy – but know that the prayers of many hundreds of people are with you all. Rest in peace, Captain.
Could not and did not want to beleive what we heard. We love your dad and his courage as a captain of a mighty crab boat.He loved both his sons and only wanted to make you better men.We will miss your Dad and have to say, the show won’t be the same.I hope that in his memory you will be strong and carry on the family tradition.God bless Phil and may he rest in peace,he will be missed.God bless you Boys and Take care of your Mother.
Dear Josh and Jake,
I just heard and you guys are on my mind. I am sorry for your loss. Cornelia Marie and her crew are my favorite.
Please forgive me if it is too soon to say that I hope there is somehow she can survive this until one of you is ready to run the ship if that is what you want to do. You two are excellent fisherman and even though we have never met you have my support.
Will miss seeing your father! He reminded me of mine, yelling to do it right. Don’t get hurt. My father Buck was a Navy man. You done what he ask no questions, even if you were a girl.. Your fathers actions reminded me of my dad a go getter. Dad raised 2 little girls mostly by his self. Do it right the first time he’d say or you’ll do it til it’s done right! Capt. Phil made me smile and remember my dad cigarettes, coffee and a beer after work along with who caught the biggest fish story. My dad passed in 1995. I think of him daily and when something reminds me of him, well I just say its a better day. You know he’s somewhere looking down on you. And with your memories to help get you through some tough days to come!! The smiles in your heart will see you through. As with my sister and I who couldn’t followed our dad fast enough, should say run behind him to keep up. To do all the things boys usually do these two girls did. Hunt, fish, grow tobacco, sugar cane molasses, and take a tractor apart is just a few of a long list of running to keep up. As with you to brothers you will share a lot of good times, memories now and later. Be proud of who you are!!! When some one see’s you years later even if they don’t remember your name they will remember Capt. Phil and his sons. My sister and I wasn’t on deadliest catch, But was then and now known as Bucks Daughters. We hold our heads high and are proud of everything our father bestowed in us. And the work your father started and wanted you finish, I hope you get as much joy doing the last things your father ask of you as we did. Ours was simply be there for each other!!!!! Good and bad and remember your brothers!! Help each other now and in the future to continue to make your dad proud. I will always watch your show and pray for a good catch and your safe return home. A lot of hard work comes on TV, Yours is the best. Takes me back to running behind my father to catch up with him. Hope this show continues maybe not right away but at least next season. GOD BLESS
Josh and Jake,
Thank you for sharing your father with us. I feel as if he and you were members of our family, and my heart is so sad for your loss. I hope that whatever comes, you can both face it with the courage he’s given you and the knowledge that he loved you. God bless you and your family and Rest in Peace, Captain.
if i was gonna work (be a fishermen) i would’ve worked for Capt. Phil Harris. Rest In Peace, buddy.
To Josh, Jake and the crew of the Cornelia Marie,
Phil was a great man. Was he perfect, no. Was he gentle, no. But he was a father who loved his children. A boss who pushed his crew to be their best and rewarded them for it.
Thank you for sharing a piece of your lives with us. Phil you will be missed.
Regards,
Chris Groeneveld

God speed Captain Phil. What a lucky man to have worked with his boys. I feel like I’ve lost a member of my own family. Thanks for sharing your lives with all of us. For the next season, I want to see Jake up in that wheel house. Carry on. Phil, we miss you.
Its hard losing a parent. But dont let the things he taught you be for nothing. He gave you all gifts and he expects you to chalenge yourself to the fullest. Yes he will be missed BUT he will never be forgotten. Remember he will be watching you. Rest in Peace.

Josh and Jake
I truly will miss your Father in my home on a weekly basis. As a Captain of a small charter boat here on Cape Cod, it was truly a pleasure to see the life of a crab fishing family. It felt that I really got to know your Father to a small degree. I send my sympathy for your loss, the empathy of many who understand and the hope that his last wishes for you will come to pass. I send my wishes of success to you both in all your future aspirations. He will always be with you and will always be proud of two sons who became men. Capt Phil Harris did his job well and you both are his living testament. God Bless
Boys, please write a book about your Dad. What a wonderful way for all of us to keep his memory alive! I am sure friends, family, and acquaintances have so many stories they could share. It’s so hard to believe that he is gone…but you just know he is up there sailing on God’s sea now, probably having a blast and bitchin’ cause it’s a smoke-free zone LOL! Looking forward to see what you do with the gauntlet he left you both to carry on. He was so very special…he will be missed tremendously….God bless you both, and your families.
Josh and Jake your dad was a good man.take care of your family and stay strong for them your dad will be greatly missed and will always be looking out for you god bless
Jake and Josh: I was very sad when I heard the new. I watch the show since the beginning. I will be sad when the season’s start and not to find capt Phil there with you boys. You are in my prayers.
It is with deep sorrow I will miss Phil may calm see’s follow you.May god bless your family.
phil you will be missed by all .. jake and josh , he will allways be looking over you .. rip phill .god bless
Phil we will miss you.
O Captain! My Captain!
O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up–for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

OMG.I just found out yesterday 2/20 and I cried so bad.I loved Capt Phil as if I knew him all my life.I love Deadliest Catch and pray for all the guys especially his sons.Josh and Jake I love u guys like brothers.I know its not gona be easy (I’ve been thru this at age 17) but it will be o.k.Dad was an awesome man whom u can be proud of the legacy he leaves behind.143 guys 4evr.God bless the family.
Althought we didn’t know Phil personally, it sure felt like it. We watched all the seasons of Deadliest Catch and couldn’t wait for the new one to begin. Our deepest sympathies go out to Jake & Josh and the rest of Phil’s family. May the finest captain out there rest in peace.
Dear Josh,Jake and crew my prayers go out to all of you. Your Dad will truly be missed! God bless.
I have been a fan of the show for some time. I don’t get a chance to watch it as much as I would like but Capt. Phil Harris was always one of my favorites. My prayers go out to your family and just take comfort in knowing that he past with all of you doing what he loved to do and he is no longer in pain and at peace. I am really looking forward to seeing the tribute show for a great Capt. and man who took care of his family in blood and at sea.
I have never missed one show, I watch all the reruns to.I will miss Capt Phil. The show will not be the same without you.
I have watched the show from the beginning. I never knew your father in real life, but seeing him on the show, you can tell how much he loved his family. I know the pain you are feeling and I know time will not take it away, just make it easier to deal with. You can be sure your dad will be watching you from above. I am so very sorry for your loss.
Losing Captain Phil – it felt like losing a friend!! Sounds like he battled this one last storm in his usual style- with great dignity!!! I think the boys will have some great stories to tell about their dad- and his grandchildren will have some great shows to see their grampa at work!!! RIP captain Phil!!
Apeice of my heart is gone, i was so saddened to hear of the passing of such a wonderful person. Though i never knew Cpt.Phil in person, he was always portrayed as a hard working caring man, and loving father, who loved what he did. I always thouroughly enjoy watching everyone on the show, but Phil’s crew in particular, he just had a way about him. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to his family friends and crew, and also fans at this very sad time. Remember to celebrate his life as im sure he would want. Never to be forgotten, Rest In Peace Captain Phil…
I have watched the show since its beginning, and its funny, you wouldnt think you could create such a connecion, a liking to someone, you really don’t know. These men, all, are so brave, and I believe it has become a part of them. Captain Phil was always appealed to me, something about him drew me to him, and for awhile I could not figure it out. He reminded me of my dad, a very straight forward guy, laying it all out there. You will be missed Captain. My thoughts and prayers are with you Jake and Josh.
Josh and Jake… watching Deadliest catch has always been a family affair at our house… our kids would always stop when ever they would see it on. You guys had a special time with your father that you will never forget. Phil was one of our favorites… and yes… I am going to sound like everyone else right now but… he certainly seemed like a genuine guy, right down to the love of you two and his fishing family. Take care and you guys are in our thoughts and prayers!!!
TO Phil’s FAMILY, my heart goes out to Josh and Jake and your mother and the rest of the family.Deadliest Catch was just a tv show for entertainment purpose but for us we learned from your father Phil and grew to like him very much. His patience at times and the love he showed for his children and times of Crazyness on that boat taught us all a few lessons of our own… As strangers we know how much he loved his sons, take comfort in that because it showed it across the nation..Rest in Peace Phil, you were my favorite boat team~
From watching Dealiest Catch for the past few years it was eveident from day one of the show that Phil always did it right, he did things his way, he seemed to say what he meant and meant what he said. There arent many people in the world a person can look up to in those regards but Captain Phil is one of the best. Gone but never forgotten. Wish there were more like him, the world is a lesser place in his leave. thanks for the fond memories!
I watched deadliest catch before it was a series and then procceded to watch the series and loved it from day 1. Captain Phil was always my favorite and it broke my heart to hear that he had passed. My thoughts and prayers to Jake and Josh and the rest of the family. He will be missed.
RIP, Phil, you will never be forgotten.
Josh and Jake…..make him proud!!!
Man we are really sad to here about Phil we all thought he was the one that made the show. He will truly be missed by all of us. Sail on Brother
rest in peace Phil, you are Gods captain now.
I have watched Deadliest Catch since the beginning and feel as if I really know these guys. But Phil was teaching the love of his trade to his boys. So we got to know them too. It was so evident and real the love that Phil has for Josh and Jake. Love never dies. It will continue to show through in Phil’s sons because he taught them life’s lessons well. We will miss you so much Phil. Rest in Peace.
We are very saddned by the sudden death of Capital Phil. He will be sadly missed in life and on the show.
Thoughts are with his family at this sad time from Australia.
I love the show, never miss one.I drive my family nuts during “catch
” marathons.Phil was one of my two favorites- I couldn’t decide between him and Jonathan.I am going to miss him terribly. He was an integral part of the show and I can’t imagine what it will be without him. To his boys, he loved you so much and was so proud of you both,go on live your lives and be happy, that’s all a parent can ask for.Good bye Captain Phil, I will never forget you.
My condolences to friends and family of Capt. Phil. My son and I love watching the show, and have since the beginning. What will Discovery show for a memorial on air? I’m sure we’d all like to see it. G-D bless to his sons.
What a phenomenal job so many people have done to keep us fans posted during a time of great loss. I appreciate the information!!!! My prayers for Jake and Josh as they find their way through the biggest storm of their life thus far…….
Sorry for the loss of your loved one.My wife and myself watched your show everytime it was on. She loved it and watched day and nite, for i had to work. I lost her at age 53 also last June 18,2009 so I know the feeling. They say time will heal but i dont know about that. Lots of luck and i hope that your life will be blessed.

To Jake and Josh. I know you’re dad is proud of you both. I watched the show reliously and your dad was my favorite captain of all. I will truly miss him. I recorded many of the shows so I could watch when I wanted. I cried when he had the blood clot two years ago, you guys feel like family to me. May God Bless and keep you safe.

Your safe now Phil, with God and the Lord as your Captain & First Mate
Rest in Peace You did a fine job here on earth. Now keep wheelwatch for us all from above.Gone but never forgotten!
I have always been a fan of the entire Deadliest Catch fleet and crew. You guys bust your asses out there, and I have a lot of respect for what you do.
Needless to say I was FLOORED when I had learned of the captains passing, and it felt as though I had lost a part of my own family.
In the end, I hope that Josh and Jake carry on his tradition, his smartass comments, and carry on the family business with a big heart such as their father did. Even though I never met the Capt. I always had a lot of respect for him.
RIP Captain Phil Harris, you are missed by many more people than you will ever know….and be sure to watch over your sons.
I’ve been re-watching the show over the past few weeks, and missing Phil.. but he had a good run, he died with his boots on, he made a world-wide impression through the show, and maybe his smoking-related death will help others to choose life over addiction.
It’s also been very moving to see all the prayers going up for Phil & family: that’s the ultimate, of course– making it home to Our Father’s eternal safe haven through all the storms and reefs of this life.
I am heartbroken and sadden by the loss of Capt. Phil you are my absolute favorite i will miss you.Josh and Jake you are the legacy now of the CM but most of all your father. Take care of yourselves we love you ft.worth TX
To Josh and Jake, (and all that knew and love Phil):
I have watched you all religiously ever since your first filming of Deadliest Catch; even own all the DVDs that have come out. We start to feel like we know all of you, and I’ve watched how you, Josh and Jake, have grown as crab fisherman, and it touched my hearr, as a mom, to watch you and your dad interact. We could all see how much he loved you and how proud of you he was. I shall really miss him! I hope you will continue on in the business as I’m sure he’d want you to. I hope I will see more of all of you on Deadliest Catch. My sincere condolences. Barbara, (Big Fan!)
Safe passage, Captain. You will be missed. Our thoughts are with the Harris family and the Cornelia Marie crew.
Captain Phil, my husband and I have watched the show from the beginning and you were always our favorite Captain! It’s hard to believe you are no longer with us, the show will not be the same! May you rest in peace my friend and may God Bless your boys, Josh and Jake. And may He always have His hands on the wheels of all the boats that go out to risk their lives for the enjoyment for us, the people they catch the Crabs for! God Speed and God Bless! Sail your boat on home my friend, and may God be with you!
It’s still too shocking to even fully comprehend. He was such a tough guy…I really thought he’d make it. Boys, be strong and keep him alive by living your life with dignity and integrity…just as he would want you too. His pride and love for you showed anytime he was near you. I’m so sorry. I lost my dad last year too. It hurts really bad for awhile, but good memories eventually win out.
Since the start of deadliest catch there has been one boat that stuck in my head and it was phils boat that stuck in my head, after all the time that i have spent watching them @ it in the bearing straights they have become a part of my family too phil had a strong physical presence and others around him would shine off of phil hearing that phil has left this ill fated planet is a huge shock to me and my family in england R.I.P PHIL the good ones always Go first .this made me cry while typeing this my heart Goes out the the boys the crew and the most important one of all MRS PHIL HARRIS .I don’t think DC will be the same now without him . Captain Phil will be sorely missed in our home, we watched The Deadliest Catch every week during their season and all the re-runs. Captain Phil definitely was our favorite crabber on the show!!! My favorite episode was the “crab farts”. He was a great friend and father to his boys!!!
I loved Phil Why can’t you rerun the series from the beginning. And leave out the head at the bottom
Love the show, its going to be strange to watch without captain Phil.
Love to the family and friends who were lucky enuf to know him.

The Cornelia Maria crew was my favorite from the day I first Deadliest Catch. Phil seemed like a compassionate, salt-of-the-earth guy. The satisfaction he took from the most authentic moments in life were apparent on his face- his boys (you guys rock), a beautiful day or a good conversation. To Phils family, thanks for sharing. I’ve learned that living in the shadow of large legacy is inspiring in a beautiful and quiet way that can stir up something inside and make us better. Here’s to all that lies ahead for you!
Deadliest Catch, since it’s inception, has been my favorite and Phil was an icon to the program, industry and his family. His unique and strait forward approach to a given situation was always a learning experience. I share a deep sense of loss having just learned of his passing. We have lost a great fisherman, father and human being. To Phil’s family members, you will never know how your father touched the lives of so many. Our deepest sympathies to you all.
To Captain Phil a true man’s man: May you live forever in our hearts and minds and I will think of you every time I see a crab! RIP and God Bless!
Capt Phil will be truely missed He was my favorite capt and I hope that he gets to chase crab farts though eternity you will be in my prayers
Thank you Phil for all the laughs and all the time you allowed us to see. To the family of the great Capt. Phil I extend my deepest sympathies. From what I saw on the show Phil was a very special person. He will be missed by my whole family. Rest in Peace Phil you are an American hero.
We will miss you Phil. It’s like the loss of a good friend. We’ve watched the show since the beginning and have enjoyed your sense of humor, especially your dealings with Josh and Jake. rest in peace.
We love the show and will miss Phil greatly. Our sympathies to all the Harris family and friends. Our favorite memory of Phil is when one of the boys used Phil’s credit card to buy a flat-screen TV for his bunk and smuggled it on board. Phil hit the roof! We still talk about how funny it was…
Capt. Phil will be missed and my sympathies go out to his family and friends. Great men like Capt. Phil live forever in our hearts.
I always thought Phili harsh to his kids and employees but having my own business there are time you have to be the hard core one… I will miss Phili and my heart goes out to his family
I will miss you Captain Phil – you are my favorite too.
God Bless you and your family.
Safe sailing, as I know you will always be there with your sons on the Cornelia Marie.
“Only the Good Die Young”
Phil was a great man. See some pictures of his celabration of life at commercialfishermensfestival.com
my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of capt phil,.
I think about the world without you in it now. Everyday I think about standing in a wheelhouse looking out over the Bering Sea and nothing compares. All’s quiet tonite, I hear the wind whisper your name. Peace Phil
You will be missed and remembered Captain Phil.
We will truely miss one of the greatest captains on deadliest catch. I know the show will never be the same. I hope the boys follow their dreams & look forward to seeing captain Jake on the Cornella Marie.
You will always be remembered. My heart goes out to josh and jake and the entire family. rest in peace mr capt phil harris.
Hamilton, Ontario Canada
I had tears in my eye reading about his last days.
I am glad that Phil had the opportunity to tell his sons how much he loved them and encouraged them to do what makes them happy in life. I hope both boys listen to what their father told them and they realize that other than fishing THEY were Capt. Phil’s life.
I’have she so manny tims in the TV in Germany .All the best for his Family and the Crew from the Cornelia Marie .
Hi is in the Haven by Good .Good save him and take the Hand over the Family & Crew

I have followed the show for sometime and have come to love the captains (Sig, Keith, Johanthan and Andy) but my absolute favorite was Phil. He was SO much like my godfather who is the president of a Harley MC. To the family and friends of Phil Harris, may God keep and comfort you during your hour of sorrow. Josh and Jake keep moving forward guys – he is watching….. R.I.P. Capt Phil – May you forever have fair seas and calm winds…
our thoughts and prays to capt. phil’s family. we have watched the show from the very beginning and have grown to love the crews. capt. phil, rest in peace.
Phil was a “in your face” kinda guy.
I really believe he had salt water in his veins. I liked seeing him dealing with his sons while on the boat.
I pray that Jake and Josh are able to go out in the world and do whatever they desire. You only have one life so you better make the most of it
Oh yes, great sadness over the loss of Captain Phil. I knew he was my favorite the first season when most of his conversation had to be bleeped out due to his foul language! What a guy. Just loved his personality and work ethic.
There will be a eerie emptiness in the Captain’s chair of the Cornelia Marie this season.
Thank you Discovery Channel for captivating us viewers with true men like Captain Phil Harris and his crew.
P.S. Phil, my late husband Gene is serving wings and drinks at the heavenly poker table….God Bless
Captain Phil was my favorite cast member. I looked at him as a father, and I saw his great love for his sons. I admired him for that. He was a tough, hard loving, good man, and he will be missed. The show will not be the same for me, as he was the cast member I most looked forward to seeing. I am praying for his family in this time of sadness. He will not be forgotten.
I just wanted to play taps for Captain Phil, I just buried my Dad, the sorrow is still so heavy on my heart, so I know how the boys feel, Phil and I were the same age , I spent 4 years on a destroyer ,and 2 years on a USCG 110′ cutter, I’ve seen some things, but nothing like what those men go through,Your all in my prayers, and I look forward to watching the new season, stay safe, Tommy DeVingo
Nicks Marine and Performance would like to say our prayers to Captain Phil and his family. may the weather be fair and pots be full for ya buddy….
Rest in Peace! You will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family and Cornelia Marie crew.
My heat is heavy and prayers with the Harris Family. I started watching years ago and came to love everyone. My son and I would watch every week and sit all day watching marathons when they were on. I had a stroke, myself in October and am still recovering. I am saddened by this news. My prayers are for the family, crew and friends affected. May he rest in peace and he will be greatly missed!
Rest in peace Phil. You were loved and I will miss you. I pray for your sons to keep it together. You brought us close to your heart. Mine breaks knowing the show won’t have your raspy voice barking out orders and telling it like it is. We’ll watch it of course, but it won’t be anywhere near the same.
We have been long time fans of the show and have for a long time enjoyed watching Phil. He was our favorite captain and we will never watch the show in the same way as we did when Phil was keeping us interested and laughing. We are saddened by the passing of Phil and send our deepest and most heart felt sympathy and love to his family and friends.
The world has lost an Icon. One of the gifted individuals that represented a way of life that has nearly become extinct. Though technology has replaced small fishing communities and small scale independents, there is a brotherhood of men like Captain Phil, that will leave an eternal legacy of an art form that has been a part of our heritage that will live throughout time.
Like the fabled Moby Dick, Alaskan Fisherman have secured a place in our hearts and legacy due to the talent, skills, resourcefulness and most importantly CHARACTER of men like Captain Phil Harris. A true pioneer, caring father, champion of our wild resources, educator, businessman, a person who loved life and gave his all.
No matter if you are a fisherman that soaks a minnow, cane pole in hand or seasoned veteran aboard a multi millon dollar industry, there is a special quality shared that all fishermen know cannot be replicated anywhere else but on the open waters. Captain Phil brought this to us through his strength, knowledge and skills. He gave us passion, commitment and perserverance in the eye of adversity; stared it down and defied the possibility of failure. It was not an option even during his last moments here with us on earth. His spirit will live on, the wind singing it’s song sliced by guide wires, steel cages, pipes, rods and railings. Wherever the sound of Herring Gulls, Cormerants, or Raptors are found, his smile, laughter will always be present. His spirit will live on with every person inspired by his wrought iron determination. The never quit attitude and failure is not an option approach.
Ken Plenke of Reedsburg Wisconsin, my father’s cousin had a passion for fishing and these words were etched in stone:
O grant that I may live
to fish until my dying day.
And when my final cast is made,
I most humbly pray, when in the Lord’s Landing Net,
I am peacefully asleep,
that in his mercy I be judged:
“As Good Enough To Keep”!
Sail on bro!

this absolutely breaks my heart! capt. phil was my favorite. i loved watching him and his sons. my heart breaks for you guys. this is very similar to what i went through with my father when he passed away. crazy how your heart can break from losing someone you haven’t even met.
My famly all love the show and when I just read in the tv scheduling the “late Phil Harris” I just knew something had happened.Coming from a fishing town, I had just been speaking about the programme this morning with my uncle, a fisherman himself. The danger and extreme conditions faced by these men is truely inspirational and Capt Phil was one of my favourites. Thoughts go out at this difficult time to the Harris Family, Cornelia Marie crew and friends and of this colourful character.
I just watched the marathon last week and made sure i stayed in all day from 12 pm to 12 am..loved watching the capt.Josh and jake i know everyone is telling you what you should do and i am telling you both, you need to do what you were born to do..hang in there fella’s..Capt.Phil,its hard for me to understand how i can feel soo sad at your passing when i never had the chance to meet you.You have many great qualities and i personally will miss him very much..safe passage capt. joe q.

Such a terrible loss of a good person. I’ve watched Deadliest Catch for awhile and felt as though I knew him personally. Thoughts and prayersa to friends and family.
I am so sorry for the loss of Capt. Phil. He will be sorely missed, the Deadliest Catch will not be the same without him.
I thought Phil was the best!!! Although he was ill before, I was still really shocked that my favorite captain has passed away and left his beloved boat and sons… Hope the best for his boys and the rest of the crew!
My son and I have planned a trip to Dutch Harbor, every since the first episode of the show, and his first glimpse of Captain Phil he has wanted to visit that area. We had planned a senior trip just he and I when he turns 18, well this September he turns 18 and we are still planning the trip, sadly our trip will be with a sad heart..Always know , the fishermen and families will be in our thoughts and prayers. Captain Phil may you Rest in Peace..

Top skipper, well and truly missed…condolences to family and friends.
i, also, want to say how sorry i am for your loss. what wonderful memories all of you who were fortunate enough to know captain phil must have. i can only imagine how difficult it will be to begin the next season of the show, but just know, that all of us who watch every episode, will be right there with you. (as, i bet, will be capt’n phill!)
Captain Phil, we will miss you.
dale e
Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you who loved and have been touched by Capt. Phil’s life. We pray God’s comfort is felt especially by Josh & Jake, but also by all of Phil’s friends, his crew & their families, the other boat captains & crews, the Discovery Channel employees.
Though not affected in nearly the same way as you, we share in your loss. May your memories & God’s strength see you through this very difficult time.
It’s devastating for everyone to have to lose phil. He was one of the toughest captains on the show and always my favorite. I will never forget you!
MY HEART GOES OUT TO PHILS FAMILY AND FRIENDS .I,M A FISHERMAN FROM SCOTLAND AND LOVE WATCHING THE PROGRAMME.
Have a safe trip up there, the crab are waiting……
may you rest in peace..
my thoughts are with his family…..
after the passing of my Mom, the following poem was given to me and I don’t know the author, but how beautiful it is. My thoughts and prayers are with Phil’s family – he was so very cool and my husband and I will miss seeing him on the show terribly:
The Broken Chain
We little knew that evening,
That God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone;
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
Your love is still our guide;
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
RIP Phil!
Our deepest sympathy goes to the crew of the Cornelia Marie especially to his son’s Josh and Jake as well as family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
My prayers go out to Captain Phil’s family and crew. I want to thank all of you that work so hard to put food on the world’s tables. Rest In Peace Captain Phil.
God Bless
rip
RIP!!! capt phil <3 luv you
just found out about phils passing ,,, although he woulnt know me ,, felt i knew him , dont realy no what to say ,,, smooth sailing phil ,, ull be missed.. RIP
To the toughest man ive ever seen. My sympathy goes out to Jake and Josh and the rest of the cornelia marie family. He will be sorely missed.
I welcomed you and the boys into my living room for years and now you are gone. Safe passage Phil. To Josh and Jake and the family my prayers and God’s strength. I too am a captain and I will be missing you whenever I am on the water. Gods speed and RIP!
I will miss Phil. He was so real to life and having his sons on the boat with him proved that he was just a regular dad who loved his sons – but they still (lovingly) drove him up the wall. Being a parent of 2 boys, I feel that too. You love them so much but they can drive you crazy. But then you look back and laugh – because it is usually very funny! It is just boys being boys! I hope to still see the Cornelia Marie fishing and I send my love and prayers to his family, and all of the friends he had.
Phil wil be missed, I have watched him and the crew over the years and have enjoyed his outgoing and honest personality. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
I miss that man, I really do. I never even knew him personally, and I miss him. I was completely heartbroken when I heard he had died. I had a “celebrity crush” on him, because he was a real man’s man. But the blue eyes, the raspy voice, and the tough-but-human attitude didn’t hurt, either. There will never be another Captain Phil.
aptn phil was a straight up man.I my self feel like I knew him and his crew pesonally just from watching the show for five years.I hope josh and jake continue the legacy of the F/V cornelia marie.
captain Phil was our favorite on deadliest catch and he will be missed
I have been a huge fan of the series ( Deadliest Catch) Capt. Phil and the Cornelia Marie was my favorite ship & crew. I will miss Capt. Phil, being close to the same age. My Thoughts & Prayers goes out to the Family & Crew. God Bless you all & once again Good Bye Capt. Phil.
The Cornelia Marie was and still is my favorite of them all. The show really showed both the tuff and soft side of phil (from a viewer’s perspective). To me he seemed like a genuine person, father, boss, and friend. – wish nothing but the best to his family and it’s really nice to hear that his boys and close friends were able to spend those last remaining days with him and really just finding closure. Not everyone is lucky enough to have that opportunity. I am looking forward to seeing the new season of deadliest catch and hope to see cornelia marie crew on top as always.
Hurray to phil a life fully lived and an insperation to all of us who live quietier lives , to Josh and family regrets.you will miss him as will we, But hurray again to a life fully lived
It was honestly a sad day to hear the news 3 days before my birthday that The Best Captain on the show had passed..It (is) was my favorite Boat! I know in my heart the boys will find peace! I know Phil has. He will continue his journey with God and watch over his friends and family!
May God Bless the Harris Family!
The Cline Family!
Rest In Peace Phil.
Your work here is done.
Enjoy a well deserved rest.
My prayers are with the boys and captain Phil, I really enjoyed watching the Captain at work and will miss him.
God bless.
I admire Cornelia Maria is one the profitable crab fishing boats characteristic on the Discovery Channel series Deadliest catch. The boat is having by Cornelia Marie and the late Phil Harris. Two of Phil’s sons, Jake and Josh Harris, work on the boat as well. Her home port is Kodiak, Alaska. Well, if you read this site I can sure you that you will have a rousing outlook with your life. I’m pleased to read your article always.
i just found out about phil harris
as a fan of the show since it has been running in the uk and have been wathing it on the internet to keep up with shows as we are about 2 years behind here
“i am deeply saddend by his death”
i offer my preyers and well wishes to his family and close frends
i fermly beleve the show has lost one of its most carasmatic stars
with phil it seemed you got what you saw nothing hidden heart on his sleave kind of guy and the world needs more of them
i hope his sons find the courage and faith inthem selves to carry on the family bussiness in the same style as there father ferm but fair
rest in peace Cpt Harris you are missed
I feel so much for Jake and Josh. Phil definitely wanted them to focus on the business and themselves and continue to set goals and be prosperous. He left them a legacy to cultivate and hopefully they can make it through the grief and new life they have now. He was such a one of a kind person and losing my own father suddenly at 58 I feel their pain. It is so important to be true to yourselves, Jake and Josh, and live as if your dad was gonna show up at anytime to see where you are at. He is only gone in body, not in spirit and Im sure you want to greet him one day and be able to look him in the eye and say, I didn’t fuck it up Dad. I did it right! God bless you both and the crew of Cornelia Marie. I watched the first season with my Dad before he passed and never stopped watching. My heart is heavy this season for Phil RIP.
Harris, family regrets-phil thank you for being part of the show which has made me wanting to see Alaska,i am saving money for the trip before my end thanks for the good times on the show never missed any thanks again don’t do too much fishing up there,Phil
The for past 4 years at christmas,& my birthday friends and family would ask me what I wanted? I would say to go to Alaska and meet Capt. Phil Harris and stand on the Cornelia Maria to get a picture. I was so sadden when I heard he had pasted. My heart goes out to you boys, your dad loved you so much. And by so many, he touched more lives then anyone will ever know. We mourn with you, and keep you in our prayers everday as you try and start your new journey. Remember he is watching over you so do him proud and kick some butt out there on the Bering sea.
Capt. Phil Harris was the real deal. A true badass in every good sense of the word, but with humor and compassion in his eyes. They don’t make guys like that much anymore, sad to say. Wish I could’ve met him.
Smooth sailing and godspeed, Phil.
my sister and I started watching the show mainly because of Phil. He reminded us a whole lot of our deceased older brother. We ended up falling in love with the show. It;s just unbelievably amazing what you all do in order to provide the economy with the sea fare that you risk your lives for. The show will never be the same and HE will be sadly missed. Our condolences to all his family and friends.
He showed us how to live, and in the end, he showed us how to die.
I’ve been a fan of TDC since the debut season and without a doubt, Captains Sig Hansen and Phil Harris made the show, period and Capt. Phil was my personal favorite.
After reading this piece, it sounded like classic Capt. Phil. I never knew the man, nor even met him, but after watching the two (three?) seasons where his sons Jake & Josh joined him, I got to see him in both a work AND family setting and felt like I knew him.
When I heard he had passed away, I wasn’t surprised. I wasn’t surprised either that he refused to stop working what is arguably not only the world’s deadliest, but also the most stressful; especially in light of his pulmonary embolism he had two seasons ago.
But that was also classic Capt. Phil. He loved the sea, he loved to fish, he loved Alaska and he loved his sons and to have all four of those loves at one time, it’s easy to see why he just couldn’t hang it up and personally speaking, I can’t say I’d disagree with his choices.
He will be greatly missed by the millions of fans who watched him every week, myself included, and quite frankly, while I’ll keep watching TDC, it just won’t be the same without the irracibile but loveable Capt. Phil Harris.
God Speed, Captain Harris. May your soul Rest In Peace for all eternity. You are greatly missed and the world is a far sadder place without you in it.
Cheers!
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU D CAPT.PHIL yOU WERE MY FAV.CAPT. KEEP THE SPIRIT ALIVE AND BE SAFE
You will be missed Phil. Thanks for the countless hours of enjoyment you gave all of us..
I’m glad they finally put the show back up on discovery channel.. After hearing of Cap’n Phil’s passing I’ve been pretty bummed out. He was definately one of the most colorful, passionate, and knowladgable of the Bering Sea Captains. Year after Year he added a great and exciting dynamic to the whole show. It wont be the same without him. He will be missed.
As we approach another season of Discovery’s Deadliest Catch my thoughts go out to Captain Phil and the crew of the Cornelia Marie. With out Captain Phil and the excitement he brings to the show and his boat Cornelia Marie this of season Deadliest Catch will not be the same. I didn’t know Captain Phil but he was really one of a kind. I really enjoyed watching him, and how he treated the crew of the Cornelia Marie. It might just be me but it appeared he really cared about his crew. I wish his friends and family the best. From Texas Y’all have a good season.
Captn. Phil Harris, was my favorite too!..the show just isnt’ the same without him!..altho, he cared so much for crew, it was obvious , that his kids, were what it was ALL about!..they showed their respect and love for their dad thru out the series too…thank you for sharing your lives with us!..teresa
I think he’s probably everyone’s favorite Captain on DC , I know he was my favorite.
Praying for his family. His boys are gonna miss him terribly!
I posted once but with tears in my eyes I feel I have something else to say, especially to Jake, Josh and the people who knew and loved Phil most. I stated that I come from a long line of watermen. I lost my father and my brother this past year within 9 months of each other. Like all of you I was blessed to be able to spend the last few weeks of their lives with them. To help them with needs but most importantly to share things that needed to be said and to show our love for each other that was always there but maybe wasn’t always shared. I was with them both when they passed from this life to go on to the bigger sea. We spread my brothers ashes in the waters where he spent most of his life in work and play. He was one of the best oysterman around they said. I like to think he is guiding others now to their big catch. I pray you will always have this closeness with your dad and old friend Phil. God Bless all of you.
God speed Capt.
Capt. Phil was the only reason i watch the show. This will be the last season for me. Good Luck to his boys and Family.
What a gift for his boys and his close friends to have that time with him at the end. As grizzly as Phil was, he was all heart. It was so clear how much he loved his boys. I hope that the show will air the film of Phil’s last days to give closure to all of us out here that grew to care about him so much. God Speed Capt. Phil!
My thoughts are with Jake and Josh. They say time heals but they dont say how much time it takes. Hang in there.
Me and my family often watch Deadliest Catch here is the UK…and sad to say a true gentleman and legend is no longer with us…the Cornelia Marie will never be the same without Phil..
RIP is peace Phil…and deepest sympathy to his family
The Cornelia Marie is about to start a new chapter sadly it will never be the same without Phil at the helm.
Phil will be sadly missed by us all here in Cornwall UK, he was one of those guys that everyone loves, a fair and honest man with a passion for his work and his family, God bless you Phil and may your family find peace in the love we all share for a true Bearing Sea, sea dog Captn.
I hope this is a wake up call to the smokers out there.
When I saw on the Discovery Channel website his picture with the message “we will miss you”; I immediately understood he died. That was a shocking moment I will never forget. I felt as if I had lost somebody from my closest family. Rest in peace, Phil. We will never forget you
I watched deadlest catch because of my late father he was also a boat captain. When I first saw capt Phill it was like seeing my dad again. The voice rough from smoke and long hours on the ocean. The same look of knowing things others will never experience.I wish to send my heart felt wish of peace for his family, and I hope the boys can still enjoy the sea. It took me some time after my dads death to do so. Goodbye Captain Phill you will be missed.
I sigend up to this some time ago and to still see tributes comming in just proves my case phil was legend genuine loyal honnest hard worker . R.I.P phil you will always be rememberd .
Very sorry to see such a great captain gone, both myself and wife saw phil as a hard working straight up guy, just wanted what was best for hima nd his family/workers. he will be sadly missed by all. R.I.P phil..
He was one hell of a skipper. He will be missed by all of us.
He did it his way. You gotta love him for that.
My heart hurts sooo bad for those who you left behind, especially Jake & Josh. Oh Captain…my Captain…what an amazing man you were. So raw…you said exactly what you meant and totally meant what you said. I cannot look at your picture without tearing up…you sooooo rocked. May there be many crab farts in heaven…
~Sarah
I was lucky enough to meet Capt Phil and the boys when they came to Eureka, Ca for a benefit. What a class act! My heart goes out to the Harris family and friends.
I met Phil for 3 minutes once. I feel like I knew him, and I miss him.
Captain Phil, you did a good job on this earth. You taught your sons what it means to be a man, to be a father, to be a captain, to be a human. I loved your humor, those clear blue eyes, and the sincerity you expressed with every word you spoke. Your sons are proud of you, and so are we all. Rest well, dear Phil.
Wish I had known you in person, Phil! You were a tough SOB when necessary, but very endearing all at the same time. Your boys are gonna have a hard time without you, as are your fans!
my family will miss capt. phil harris. he was a great man, he was doing 2 hard job’s at a time. one was being the capt of his boat and the other was being a father.he did both great, just look at his boy’s. his son’s jake and josh will now carry on his legecy. the world will be a sadder place without him. may he be buried near his boy’s so they can visit him often.capt. phil will be sadly missed by his son’s jake, josh, friends and family, and my family. all our prayers go out to his boy’s, family and friends
I have watched the show since it first started and Phil has always been my favorite captain. He has a very close resemblance to my dad. He always said what was on his mind on the show and just seemed like a really good guy. My heart goes out to his family. The loss they have suffered is a great one, and there is a whole that will never quite be filled. We will miss you Phil!
Rest peacefully Captain Phil and keep an eye out for all those who sail the Bering Sea.
Thank you for letting us get to know you and showing us how hard fisherman work. I admire the dedication and love you had for the Cornelia Maria, your crew and the respect you had for the sea~
I started watching the show when I lived in Texas and really respect the crews and captains for doing something not many people can or would do. Phil Harris was one tough and entertaining man. I am sure everyone will miss him. I moved to Seattle three years ago and never took the time to try and meet any of the crews or captains of these wonderful deadliest catch boats. My prayers are with Phil Harris’ family and friends. I truly am sorry his family had to lose him so soon but I know they will be alright. His sons learned a lot from their dad and from fishing. That should carry them on even though we only see what the camera shows.
May his presence always be felt on the boat and with his family and friends.
Stay strong and remember all the good things and lessons he taught you. God bless you all and may your burden be lightened.
I imagine Capt. Phil watching this last season from above with great anticipation.
Take care Phil.

I have been a fan of DC since the beginning. What can you say! It was a Wild Ride every week!
Thank You Phil of the memories! You will be missed.
God Bless you Jake & Josh
I personally didn’t know captain Phil but i have watched the show since the start and i will miss him he was my Fav. captain and from one fisherman to another I will see you again in the end & don’t fish that hole out before I get there.
I have followed Deadliest Catch from the beginning. I am in shock to learn that Capt Phil has died. I grieve for his sons and for the great loss. Everyone on Deadliest Catch is family. Phil was my favorite Capt because you could see his strength and the struggle on a daily basis to pass on his knowledge to his sons. He will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to his sons, his family and friends…and to the whole cast and crew of Deadliest Catch. I’m sorry I didn’t know sooner.
Just a quick note to Josh and Jake;I think your dad was one great guy.You could see how much he loved both of you and he will be sorely missed.I have never missed an episode and still won’t.I hope to see you guys back on the CM and continuing Phil’s legacy.God speed Phil,I feel I have lost a close friend.
To my favorite CAPTAIN. May the winds take you to the best fishin hole ever!
I miss you already. Jake and Josh my prayers are with you. Carry on with pride in the name of CAPTAIN PHIL!!
So sorry to hear of the death of Captain Phil, he was a favorite of mine as I am a great fan of the show. His love for fishing was only over-shadowed by his love for Josh and Jake. I wish his sons well he wanted the world for them and I hope they find it.
To the Harris family my prayers go out to you. To have a father like that is beyond imagination. The care and compassion you had on the show was amazing. I have been watching the show since the beginning and was shocked to hear of his death. May he rest in peace. God bless to you guys. I know there will be smooth sailing for the rest of your lives because Captain Phil will always be looking down on you.
Wheare verry sad to find out that phil died,we are from belgium and the series running later over here.
He was a great skipper, and a good friend and dad to his two sons.
Whe will missing his carracter and dry humor, hardly never screaming to his crew,he was a good en respectful skipper,
Sorry if i make e few mistakes in my writting I AME FROM BELGIUM,
Iwish his sons and family, friends al the best.
RONNY
An now the poor guy rots in hell for his bad choices in life. GOD gave him a 2nd chance to come back and repent his sins, I am sure that did not happen.
Amanda … may reap what you sow.. may you that live in a glass house throw the first stone then honey i would duck.. you know nothing of that man.. i dont know who you are .. but.. im sure this board is NOT for you to trash Phil.. i could say a lot more and am tempted but.. then id lower my self to your level.. and that i assure you wont happen…
I would be pleased and honored to be sitting beside that man as he fishes in heaven… unlike you… you wont get to fish..you will be bait….
Amanda….. obviously you didn’t watch the show to see what kind of man Phil truely was. And it must be nice to be able to live in a glass house and throw stones, if I was u I would duck ALOT!!!! Don’t degrade someone you don’t know, because what comes around goes around and you should be very careful. Phil was a good, kind, and very smart man. Everyone is allowed their opinion but why would u bother posting something like that about someone you didn’t even know. If you didn’t like him why would you even bother? And I’m pretty sure you know what you can do with your bible thumping attitude. I personally love Phil, and hope the Cornelia Marie stays on the show. Phil will be missed greatly!!!
Phil was my favorite, my husband and I have been watching the show since the beginning. He will be missed.
Amanda if you can’t say something nice, why didn’t you just keep it to yourself, that comment was uncalled for
well oh hell… my bible thumping boots are in the truck.. nothing like walking on and spitting on a grave… i read your comment and then just moved on .. then returned to see that .. you are in the total minority.. i got a really good idea for you … since you seem to be soo very full of knowledge.. ( i dont think that’s what it’s really called.) You probably should just move along to someone elses board and keep them on the straight and narrow.. making a comment like you have made..about someone you know NOTHING ABOUT merely proves your head isnt full of brains at all but more likely full of.. $hit
Who hasn’t made bad choices in their life at one time or another. Does this mean we all will rot in hell as one commenter suggests? I don’t think so.
I’ve posted once before but I wanted to state again the deep respect I have for the men and women who choose this work. It’s a noble and ancient profession and any kudos are well deserved I am sure. This is Capt. Phil’s and his family’s time right now. Good luck all and god bless. There are obviously more fans than not and that being said. Safe passage to all who sail the seas.
As I said on the fan page for Capt. Phil, this will be a huge void in the fleet to me and I’m sure everyone. I seemed to feel most for him of all the skippers, that “one-legged man in a a&*!kickin’ contest.” Yet he always pulled it off with high numbers. Even when some quack sent the wrong-pitched propellor one season to replace the busted one(starboard was it?). RIP, Phil-keep kicking butt, guys!
Amanda—How sad and empty your life must be to come to this board to talk utter nonsense about someone you did not even know. This man had 2 sons who are mourning for him along with countless personal friends and fans. How dare you be so callous! But I’m with Katie and the others, I will not lower myself to your level. Go find somewhere else to haunt and leave Capt. Phil, his family, his friends and his fans alone. Now hop on that broomstick and fly on out of here….and please, don’t come back. Your not wanted nor welcomed. RIP Phil and sympathies to Josh, Jake, the rest of his family and friends. He WILL be missed.
Amanda, you’re a dumb bi***. To the Harris family, Rock On. Rest Easy, Capt.
My mouth is still hanging open from reading the comment Amanda made. Why on God’s green earth would anyone say something like that! I too have watched Captain Phil and the rest of crew and show from the beginning and I am thoroughly convinced that Phil was a GREAT person and has a special place in heaven. My thoughts and prayers go out to Captain Phil and his family.
RIP Phil…
I have watched the show from the start.I have followed all the Captian`s even the interviews.Captian Phill Harris was one of those rare people that show`s up on this earth and does the right thing. He raised two boy`s that have turned out to be good people. He lived his life the way he wanted,,,,,good or bad,but who is the judge of that,,,,only Phill. He went out with respect and pride.I lost my Dad when he was very young, but he did the same thing,as I will when it`s my time. The gal Amanda must have been his X wife.My heart goes out to Josh and his brother, because you could see they both loved him with all their heart`s.Life goes on and so does the show.Everyone should be very proud that watch`s the show that they had the time to watch these guy`s that risk their live`s to better it for their family`s.GOOD-BY PHILL HARRIS,SEE YOU SOON!….PS:Amanda I think you will see him before I do and I`m 96.It`s called KARMA BABY.
amanda, you are one stupid bitch.
I always appreciated Phil. he is a very brave good working man who did not deserve to die !
I have seen many episodes of Deadiest catch, and I must say that Phil was my absolute favourite captain. So cool, strong and handsome!
So I was so sad than I was told that he wasn´t among us anymore. My thoughts go to his sons, be strong guys!
And Phil, rest in peace, we will always love you!
Best wishes from Sweden.
What a Shock!! I was watching a program on the Discovery channel and saw the commercial where it had shown Phil passed away. I was like WHAT??? I had to rewind it to see it again. I was teary eyed and so sad and i dont even know him but just from watching the series. Phil, U will be greatly missed by all your friends family, loved ones, and all your Fans!! May God Bless your family and hope his 2 sons, Jake and Josh, carry on your legacy the way you would like to see them do. He lived such a rough life by working like he did, but he did it for his family and i can respect that 100%!!
It saddens me that some use this board to trash the people that take on jobs that no one else wants. Being a off shore captain myself, Capt. Harris is part of a brotherhood and bond that cannot be tarnished by anyone. Say what your heart desires, but you will NEVER take away that pride of being a Captain of a crab boat. (F/V Corneila Marie, this is F/V Eastern Pride on channel 18. As the anchor sets to the bottom of the blue sea, rest in peace my brother, you will be missed dearly, never forgotten and always be in our hearts forever. This is F/V Eastern Pride standing by.)
I think the outpouring of affection for the rough and tumble Capt. Phil Harris from people that only knew him from Tv speaks volumes about the man.
Josh and Jake, my heart goes out to you. I lost my father last Thanksgiving, it was and still is very hard. But time does heal, and it’s the good times and life lessons that you will remember moving forward.
My God Bless you both as you move forward in your life’s journeys.
My husband and I only recently started watching the show on Netflix a month or so ago, so I can’t claim a long viewing habit, but Capt. Phil was one of our favorites. We loved the way he let us into his life, not only the fishing aspect of it, but his feeling for his family, and his sense of duty and obligation to his crew and everyone else who depended on him.
I know I can’t say anything to make your loss easier; I wish I could. You all must be feeling a huge loss and much sadness. If it’s of any comfort to you all, even without ever having met him, he touched many people’s lives. He helped make us aware of the very dangerous occupation your family’s in so that we can enjoy delicious Alaskan crab. He showed us the sacrifices Captains, crew, and family make to do what he loved — fishing. My husband and I are very grateful that we had the opportunity to hear from this marvelous man. We are very sorry for your loss.
Amanda — how *dare* you make such comments to Capt. Phil’s family and friends? Please, go see your priest or minister and confess your sin. I’d also recommend secular counseling, as you appear to have anti-social personality disorder tendencies. That was rude, completely uncalled-for, and disrespectful. Shame on you. Shame.
The Harris family and friends — please ignore that dreadful woman’s comment. The Capt. was a good man with a large heart, and I have no doubt whatsoever that God is cradling him in his arms in love and that Capt. Phil will be waiting in heaven when it comes time for you to join him — hopefully many, many years from now.
May God bless all of you.
Amanda it saddens me that you would come to a board like this to belittle a man you did not know. No matter the choices Phil made in his life the end is between him and his maker, not you or I. “Judge not lest you be judged.”
I have been watching Deadliest catch also since the start, and have been pulled into their lives along with the rest of the world, seen the ups and downs, cried as ships went down, lives were lost. Almost clapped in joy when the seas were good and they had good hauls, laughed over the hi jinx between crews and held my breath seeing the close calls the men have. Capt. Phil was right there with his crew through thick and thin. He showed us the emotion between the man, his sons, and extended family.
God Bless you Phil you will be greatly missed.
Amanda!!!who do you think you are?Phil is with our maker. He was a good kind soul and treated everyone right.God is the only one who can pass judgement not you. Did you ever watch the Deadliest Catch? All the guys believe in a higher power you would be crazy not to doing that job. Phil loved his boys, crew, his fellow Captains and friends. Everyone curses so please get a life!!Leave our Captain Phil alone. I sugest you look deep inside of your soul and go for help!
People like our ever so rightous Amanda(If that is even her real name) have no life sadly and do nothing more than sit around all day and look for a tragedy so she can poke a stick in a wound. People like her get thier jollies by hurting others and seeing how much damage they can do. They like to be the center of attention, so they make others so angry that the focus becomes about her and no longer Capt. Phil or any one else. When you see crap like that, the best thing to do is ignore her and don’t give her the attention she is begging for…. Sad…
Fair Weather to you Capt. Phil…I know your seas are now calm and the wind is at your back…See you on the other side…
Fishing was obviously one of the favorite activities of our Messiah, Jesus. He liked seafood so much he turned a few fish into thousands, and hung out with fishermen from the very start of His ministry. The early Christian church was developed by Simon Peter, who, by the way, was a successful fisherman.
The brave fishermen of the high seas, risk their lives to make an honest living for their families and bring food to others. The men and women who go out to sea are the most spiritual people I have ever met. Just because somebody smokes and cusses, doesnt mean God loves them any less than a pious church goer. God Bless the family and friends of Capt Phil. I love Deadliest Catch, and I think it is a show with a great message for all families. More fathers and sons need to have a bond like Phil has with his sons.
RIP Phil. Not the same without you.
Capt. Phil is awesome. What a loss. Amanda! Go fuck yourself you heartless fucking witch!!!
I am sorry he passed, I think he was a great man and father. We will all miss him
My deepest sympathy for all that knew and loved Phil. A fine example of what a man should be, tough as nails but kind, considerate and passionate. Smooth sailing and safe passage for all that venture out to sea.
Jake, Josh, and the rest of the family…I’m sure you have realized how much Phil was liked and admired; He had thousands of fans, and I am one of them. I’m very sorry for you loss.
Hey Amanda, it’s called a remote control. If you don’t like what you see, change the channel! Perhaps you should be out on a boat in those conditions. I wonder what you would do to deal with all the pressures of a captian. If all you noticed were “bad habits” then I suggest you take up some other activity.
To all of Phil’s family and friends, I’m very sorry for your loss and although we did not know him personally, he will be sorely missed by our family. I still can’t watch the old episodes without crying.
Phil, if you do fish out that hole before I get there, I’ll be happy to clean ‘em for you, if not save me a spot! I’ll be the girl in the waders.
Just wanted to send out my deepest sympathies to the Harris family! Capt. Phil and his family were one of the main reasons i started tuning in. To see a family with such a strong bond working together to accomplish an always daunting task was inspiring, my heart goes out to josh and jake, god bless the harris family and thank you for all that you have shared with us!
I met Phil when we were neighbors in Kirkland, WA. I remember the first time he brought his kids to his new place. They were just scrappy little kids then, now full grown men. Which makes me — old. And that of course makes me think of how Phil lived his life. He packed a whole lot of livin’ into the years he had. He was always a ton of fun to be around. Rest in Peace.
I’ve been traveling overseas recently so have only just today heard the sad news.
My heart and thoughts go out to Captain Phil Harris’ family in what must be a difficult time. They will at least be heartened by the many kind wishes sent via this site.
I’ve been a dedicated follower of the Deadliest Catch since its inception and it really will not be the same watching (as I will continue to do) without my favorite captain involved.
Amanda, your poisonous comments have been widely criticized and I will be adding to this. Why you feel the need to post this type of garbage is beyond my comprehension and I feel you should consider the feelings of others (Phil’s family will likely be reading these posts) before voicing your opinions as they are clearly not welcomed in this forum. People like you do not deserve access to an internet connection let alone an opinion.
My sincere sorrow to the Harris family for your loss.
Captain Phil was a big reason why I watch Deadliest Catch. I will miss him. His sons have should be able to carry on the Harris name with pride. Rest in Peace.
I, too, watched Capt Phil on Deadliest Catch and watched a Capt Phil show his soft heart and good soul. If you watch and read any and all the times he spoke you see how he taught others by changing his personality to match the setting to motivate you. Yes, Capt Phil, I thank you for sharing your wisdom and I will miss you as well as the rest of us wanna be greenhorns.
I didn’t know Captain Phil Harris but my mom was stricken with the same illness same time as Captain Phil Harris. I cried when he died even tho I don’t know him but it affected me so much my mom is not 100% I worry I’m gonna lose her. I wish the Harris family the best. I would want nothing more then to pay my respects to a wonderful man, father, and captain. With all my love!
I have watched the show and Capt Phil since day 1 and am totally shocked at his death. My prayers go to him and his family, he will be missed more then mere words could ever explain by everyone who watched Deadliest Catch!
For me, Big Phil was the epitome of the frontiersman,..brave, hardy, uncompromising, a straight shooter and above all a lovely guy. I never knew him, but he is one of those few people you see on the TV reality shows that you really wish you did. A kind of guy you just know would be a great guy to go for a beer with or just shoot the breeze. The kind of guy who is a best friend you never met.
Captain Phil..rest in peace, you were an inspiration to more people than you could ever know.
My condolences to Josh and Jake,…. guys,… your Dad was Awesome!!…
The Lord is my pilot, I shall not go adrift; He lighteth my passage across dark channels; He steereth me through the deep waters, He keepeth my log. He guideth me by the evening star for my safety’s sake. Yea, though I sail mid the thunders and tempest of life, I shall fear no peril for Thou art with me. The vastness of thy sea upholds me. Surely fair winds and safe harbors shall be found all the days of my life; And I shall moor, fast, and secure, forever Amen.
every mans hopes and dreams are to have one or all of his children to follow in his footsteps but to ultimatly know he did everything he could to help them along the way and to know when he was gone that they would be able to do it on thier own, i believe phil died a happy and content man, and will be keeping an eye on his family.
I agree with the majority of the other posters….And what comes to mind is to put Amanda in a crab pot and “WELD” it shut before tossing it overboard. As bitter as the bait is,it would probably come up lame. I really liked Phil’s humor….Wished he’d done like me and gave up the smokes….I got scared when I coughed up dark red blood…that was it for me….As for the Harris Family,I know it’s hard,But he would want you to be happy…..I’ve lost a lot in 10 years…it does get easier eventually,But I still have moments.
My wife died from Pnemonia 7 years ago in march,But what really kills me ,even more than that, was the Murder of my sister and Neice in 2007. There was a total of 6 people Killed total in all…God Bless everyone!!!
I wonder If Amanda eats crabs,Knows where they come from(Not the grocery store)..Or if she’s just bitter that she has them???(Not the eatin’ kind)EEEEEUUUUUWWWW!!!! There’s some Humor for ya Phil!!!
You stupid cunt Amanda I hope you die now bitch.. R.I.P phil were all gonna miss you man
Well,Even with my last comment(Which was a bit over the top Texas style) I have a hankerin’ for some Snow crab or King crab…And I do know where they come from,,,Thanks Guys!!!
BTW…Ya’ll should come down here,Abilene, Tx. way(Or Ft.Worth)and try some delicious BBQ….We got this Menu!!!
When I learned Capt Phil had passed I almost fell to the floor. I cried and every time I think of him now, my eyes tear up. And now that time has come for the new season to begin, I don’t know how I’m going to handle watching the show.
There was something so completely earthy about Phil that you were just totally drawn to him. Keep crabbing in the Heavenly Sea Phil. My best to Jake and Josh…your Father loved you dearly.
And to Amanda…be careful what you wish for other people, you just might suffer the same fate. You are truly a pathetic excuse for a human being.
whats the matter amanda crab got your tongue? among other things.
I SIT HERE WITH TEARS IN MY EYES, WITH THE TEARS ABOUT TO FALL. I COULD NOT PUT MY FINGER ON HOW I CAME ABOUT WRITING SOMEONE I DID NOT PERSONALLY KNOW AND SOMEONE FROM TELEVISION,BUT THIS ARTICLE TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH AND I FOUND THE WORDS I WAS TRYING TO SAY. PHIL DID AND WAS DRAWN TO YOU. I FELT THAT FROM THE FIRST TIME I SAW HIM. I WILL FIND IT HARD TO ONLY HAVE A PICTURE ON THE SCREEN FOR THE NEXT AND LAST SEASON FOR HIM. I AM GREIVING ALSO FOR A FRIEND WHO DIED ON ASH WEDNESDAY FROM WHAT ULTIMATELY LED TO A STROKE AND BRAIN CANCER AND ANOTHER HAS A FEW MONTHS TO LIVE. I AM NO STRANGER TO DEATH,LOOSING MY MOTHER AT 7. I HOPE LIFE AFTER DEATH IS FOR REAL. HE IS GREATLY MISSED BY ALL OF US WHO LOVED HIM. MARLENE 4/8/10
captain phil was a wonderful man.His sons were blessed to have him for a father. The show wont be the same without him.
I cannot believe the self-pride and judgmentalism of Amanda. God is a God of mercy. Only He knows Phil Harris and his heart. So who are you to say “i am sure he did not repent from his sins”? God is Judge. Amanda is not. The kind of comment you made on here is the kind of comment that turns people from Christ. God loves Phil as much as He does you sister.
By the way Amanda, I am sure alot of people at the foot of the cross said of the thief on one of the crosses, “I am sure that stinkin thief is burning in hell, I am sure he did not repent of his sins…”. Yet, between the thief and Jesus, Jesus said, “Today I will see you in Paradise” based on the thief’s belief, not works. Hence, Phil’s eternal state is not between Amanda, Jesus and Phil. Just Phil and Jesus. Mercy. You are just as much a sinner as Phil. Thank God for His Mercy in Jesus for all that call upon Him.
I can’t imagine how the boys will deal
with the first season without their dad to lead them, yet being his sons, I am very sure they will be just fine. Your are in our prayers.
I was absolutely devastated when I heard about Capt. Phil. My entire family watches and loves the show and Capt. Phil was by far our fave!!
May you rest in peace Capt. Phil… And may you family find peace…
Oh and Amanda… Karma is a bi***, And she does come back to bite, and bite hard! I’ve heard many sermons preached about not judging others.. God is the true judge… And you, My dear, will be judged accordingly…
I’m really gona miss Phil; a mans man! I also have been dealing with an illness that has kept me down for sometime. I stepped out of my little box to do things I thought I’d never do. A few weeks ago, I got my first tattoo. haha. I showed the guy a picture of a GreenMan I wanted; someone to look over me. After two sessions, and 5 hrs, my Green Man looked like Phil?! I couldn’t believe it. Not just a good spirt of the forest, but the man of the sea. I couldn’t be happier. And, if anyone ever asks, I’ll tell them it’s Phil!
Keep your eye on the horizon Phil..
I am glad that he got to say goodbye to his family. I am sure that he was too. Bon Voyage on your greatest journey.
I pray that Josh and Jake receive this and read what I have to say with an open heart and mind. I am a 60 year old mom of two men who I dearly love and I also know about losing a father when you’re so young, from basically smoking. My dad came back from literal death for 6 days and never stopped talking to all of us he loved. He, like your dad were blessed to have the time to share deep thoughts and emotions before they passed on. I know he is in a better place and I know it is a great place, just by observing the way he behaved toward his crew and especially you boys. You have truly been blessed!
Now, I have something extremely important to share with you, Josh and Jake. I figured Jake probably wouldn’t bother reading my message from a 60 yr old woman, haha, and I’d have better luck to get through to you.
My dad asked me, on his deathbed, to never smoke again and I made him that promise……for a few years…until some family stress was my excuse for hitting the old cigs again. I on and off since I was 14 yrs. old. Well, from 30 yrs. to age 58 yrs. I think I only quit a total of a couple of years, even after I fell off a bike, hitting my head and began having serious brain issues that became quite complex. Keep in mind, I did not stop smoking.
I couldn’t even make myself quit when the doctors told me there were areas of my brain that they were pretty sure were ruined, possibly, by smoking and if I didn’t stop I was going to die of a stroke. The Mayo Clinic neurologists even said they wouldn’t treat me anymore if I didn’t quit. Guess what, I kept smoking!
It is TOTALLY AN ADDICTION and it’s no different from being a meth or cocaine addict. Don’t laugh, it’s true!
In “girlie tears” I begged one of my doctors to help me. I needed a really good tool in order to recover. Of course, every person is different, but due to me religiously watching the A&E Channel’s “Intervention” (my own idea which helped me come to terms that one addict is no different from another and I was no better than a herion addict).
Then I was refered to a research program run at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Campus, Dr Hurst. He and an intern used a computerized breathing program that the Swedish have online free. It teaches you how to breath a certain way everytime you grab for or feel like you need a cigarette. Between the Intervention show and this computerized breathing technique I will be nicotine and tobacco free 2 years April 22nd.
I pray that the two of you boys honor the memory of your dad and especially honor and cherish yourself to get the proper help for your addiction. There are ways to do it and you both deserve to be healthier than the present future is heading you toward. I send my prays, love and good wishes.
By the way, if you get to Phoenix, AZ or Scottsdale or anywhere close, I’d love to meet you, someday. You both are extraordinary young men, in you own ways. Don’t compare yourself to anyone but yourself and you’ll do well.
And Josh, your dad was correct in telling you to get out of the business. You truly should get some good technical training or go to college! Love you guys and say hi to your crew! Sharon
Hello to Jake, Josh, and all the family of Phil Harris.
I was stunned when I found out whilst looking at when the new series of Deadlist Catch was coming on, to find out that Phil had passed.
Phil was most definately a man you would remember out of all the Captains on the show, he came across as a man with great knowledge of the fishing life, and one episode sticks out to me, and it is when I think it was Jake wanted to get full share of the money, and Phil dressed him down and you could see how hurt Phil was when Jake walked off, this to me showed that Phil was a fair man, a compassionate man, and also a man not to take for granted.
I love the programme, I do hope to see Phil’s son’s come back in the new series, I know it will be hard for them, but it would be of great credit to Phil; to see his son’s come back and take their rightfull place.
Watching the programme will never be the same, but it will always remmind me of Phil, the way he was, the way he would show the grit and determination in the pain he was in, just goes to show what a real man, and real Captain he was.
May God bless Phil, and also all of his loved ones left behind, take care to the family of Phil, and may you always remember him in the fun times he has given all of us who watch the programme.
Pastor Ray
England.
**** when i heard he died i got so freakin pissed the cornelia marie is my favorite ship but without him its not gonna be the same
Phil has touched so many lives.. through the past years, and will be sadly missed by all… My heart cries out for his family and close friends with deepest sorrow… God bless you all!!
Rest In Peace Captain Phil. Deadliest Catch will not be the same with out you. You will be Missed by many.
Captain Phil was larger than life & the show will not be the same without him. He will be missed by not only his family and friends, but by those of us who watched the show.
Amanda, you’re obviously not a Christian. It’s doubtful that you follow any faith. Your post shows you to be a cold, shallow, deluded person. If given the choice to be around someone like you or someone like Capt. Phil,I’ll pick Capt. Phil and his like everytime.
josh n jake ,i had just lost my mother inlaw before christmas, we are still dealing with her house,an many other things.she was also a smoker,i myself had lost my mother, she was brutily, murdered, life was never the same.i lost my mother at 23 yrs old i am now 52.i never got the chance to tell her goodbye , be ever so thankfull you boys got to say your goodbyes.NOT that it makes it any easier,I know it doesnt, your DAD was very proud of you , dont let your gaurds down ,an do stupid things cause you are hurting inside, STAND PROUD AN DO AS YOUR FATHER would want you do ,no matter what you decide for your lifes,he WILL be proud of you, rather it be a great fishermen,or a great baseball player ,he would just want you to be the best ,as all PARENTS want for there children .I am so glad you had the time with your father when you did,on the show an off the show,as i never had with my MOTHER,go with your hearts an what ever your FATHER taught you an he will be proud of you .my true regrets are with you an all the guys on deadliest catch
hey amanda, you are a ****** screwed up twit people like you shouldnt even be aloud to be on the inter net much less own a computor
Hey boy’s(Josh /Jake) seriously…if you don’t smoke, don’t start…if you do..Chantix did it for me(As well as the coughing up blood thing)That stuff is weird…only used it for 1 month…But..seriously..of all the other Captain’s out there,I think Sig may have been one of Phil’s close friend’s (Just saying)and he would most likely be willing to offer advise to ya’ll….If you stay in it…I wish you well(A.K A…I pray for your success)…God speed with your recovery boys..if you only knew what I’ve been through. Maybe someday I can tell you all about it???
First, amanda is one of those religious fundamentalists that is so terrified of the real world that they exist for no other reason than to cause pain for others. These people are synonymous to demons and should be killed, period.
Second, I smoke, I know people who smoked all their lives and lived to 90. Sure it’s not good for you but, I think we’re missing the point here. I will miss Phil greatly, and that’s why I don’t necessarily mourn his passing. I have, within the past 1.5 years, lost 2 members of my close family. I look at it this way; One day death will take from you everything you hold dear. It is inevitable. The secret to happiness is to appreciate what you have now. We all loved Phil, without even knowing him personally. This is testament to the impact he’s had on our lives. And that is, after all, what this existence is all about. It’s what you leave behind you when you go. And Captain Phil left behind one HELL of a legacy. I, for one, am proud of him. See you on the other side Phil. Thanks for the memories.
Capt Phil, You will be missed….I`ll never forget the fart bubbles…
I was saddened to hear of my favorite captain (Phil) passing away! My prayers and most sincere condolences to his family(both blood and all who loved him). He is/will be missed!
Rest in peace Captain Phil from a few good fans in Pennsylvania.
I remember the first season my husband got hooked on deadliest catch…i used to poke fun at him because it was like his ‘soap opera’. then one thing led to another and i was right next to him on the couch every week waiting for the new episode to begin or making sure the DVR was set if we werent gonna be home. We used to pick a boat each season to root for and for some reason we both always chose cornelia marie with captain phil and his boys. maybe its because we are parents and its nice to watch a father work with his children, or maybe it was phil’s way of givin em’an ass chewin when they needed it, but one thing was for sure. He loved his boys and everyone knew it. We will watch this season with a heavy heart and still root for the cornelia marie and phil’s boys…we are praying for you and hope you do well emotionally if not successful on the boat. CAPTAIN PHIL will be missed in our house!
hey AMANDA GOD GAVE U A CHANCE TO BE A NICE PERSON ,BUT U THROUGH THAT AWAY AND SINNED BY WRITING SUCH AN EVIL LETTER.MAY U ROT IN HELL!And to jake n josh, your father was an amazing man who did the best he could, with what he had been given.I cant imagine your pain ,as i cry,and i’ve never even met him. Rest in peace my brother, see u upstairs mate.love ya(u to boys)P.S THINKING OF U GUYS IN AUSTRALIA
R.I.P CAPT PHIL. YOUR LEGACY WILL BE CARRIED ON PROUDLY. JAKE AND JOSH, I LOST MY DAD 5 YEARS AGO AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH. STAY TOUGH GUYS. MY SYMPATHIES TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
Oh…Amanda’s just mad she has crabs…. Again,Not the eatin’ Kind.(EEEEUUUUUWWWW!!!!)
I suggest she shave one side, set fire to the other, then stab them with an ice pic when they run back over to the other side… Hope this give’s Phil and the boy’s a laugh…And anyone else that find’s it amusing!!!
We Texan’s have, and appreciate twisted senses of humor!!!
R.I.P. Phil. the show wont be the same with out you shouting and swearing as you did haha. good luck to the crew with future seasons and hope you all return home safely.
R.I.P. bigman!
CAPT. Harris will be missed a great deal. he was a funny funny man. all my best to his family. and all the best to the crew of his boat.
I have been a huge fan of the Deadliest Catch since the beginning. My thoughts, prayers and best wishes go out to Capt. Phil’s family and friends. May you find much comfort and many smiles in the memories of a man I could only dream of meeting. God bless you all!
Captain Phil was a true hero doing the job that most of us cant or wont to enjoy something we love. I will always remember how he would get sooo mad at his boys call them up for a butt chewing then they would look at him and smile and he just started to love. This father loved his boys and it was very evident in the way he looked at them.. I will miss him very much on the show and wish the best for his family..
Phil was a man’s man. He lived his life to the fullest. I am envious of him for living life on his terms. Most of us never do that. God gave him a special gift to say what he needed to say to his family and friends. You will be missed. Not just on TV, but as a man without pretense.
I have watched the show for years now. and i have always admired Capt Phil Harris. He was my favorite out of the captians. Phil Harris you will be greatly MISSED!!!!
I have been a fan of The Deadliest Catch since the first pilot episode they put on the discovery network.Capt Phil was on of the most real persons i have ever had the enjoyment of observing.God Bless you and keep you warm under his divine glory Catp Phil you will be miss by more ppl than you realize. To Jake and Josh follow your heart do what you wanna do.If you want to fish, fish if you dont dont but what ever you do do it with the guts and glory of your old man he was and will always be a true herop of the ppl.
I live in Bothell WA and when I read on the sign outside the local fruit market that Captain Harris had passed it broke my heart, I pulled over on the side of the rode and sobbed in disbelief. My thoughts and prayers go out to Captain Harris’ family. Jake and Josh, your dad is in a better place now watching over you and know that no matter what path your life takes you down your dad was, is and will forever be proud of you. I will continue to watch deadliest catch but it will NEVER be the same without Captain Phil Harris!
Amanda,if you even own a Bible, see if you can find Romans 6:7. There it says quite plainly “for he who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”
And @IWeep4U, I love your rendering of the 23rd Psalm.
Jake & Josh – I am so sorry for your loss. You are good men, and your father is proud of both of you. He is missed by many, truly missed as he was himself all the time. Give your Grandmother another hug, this has to be unspeakably tough for her, too.
@Amanda – you were not there, you do not know, your words are hateful and definitely not Christ-like. A better way to express it is, “I pray he repented his sins and was forgiven. This is what Christ died for.”
Me, not being a Christian, know that Phil had a true and loving heart, that is all that matters, and he is where he belongs.
I’m watching the seasons reruns with Phil and im tring to grab the courage to watch the season opener Phil was my favorite capt. i love watching him and yes he draws you in with his persona and the attitude i love it….. jake and josh my heart goes out to you guys. but just remember everytime you look up at the sky your dad is watching over you and your ships crew
I can not believe you Amanda. You have no idea. God forgives i am 100% sure Phil is in heaven right now. He was a great man.
Jake and Josh, and the crew of the Cornelia Marie. God bless all of you for your courage. Your dad and capt will be greatly missed. Make your dad proud boys and keep the tradition going. And Good Luck this season, May your seas be calm and your pots be full.
I’ve been watching this show since it first started, and Phil has always been my all thime Favorite!! When I heard he’d passed it was almost like losing my dad all over again, Phil reminded me alot of my dad, i feel for the family and hope all the best for them to get through this. I find it hard to watch the new season cause everytime I see Phil I want to cry and I did as soon as I saw him!!! The only comfort I have is the thought that him and my Dad r up there talkin bout fishin from dawn til dusk!! My the Harris Family b blessed and know that all u guys r in my thoughts!!
ok i just read the older comments and I have to fully agree Amanda ur a holier than thou bitch u r not god’s gift to everyone and God does not like ugly people, and u have shown urself to b truly ugly on the inside, the outside don’t matter here!! May Phil rest in Peace and may dumb asses leave him alone!!!
I also have suffered because of smoking, had double bypass surgery and stents placed in my arteries.Quit for 2 yrs and then started again. So I know what Capt. Phil Harris went through with the smoking problem. It is an addiction and so very hard to quit when you have smoked so long. And when all Dr’s, friends and family are telling you to quit it is just not that easy knowing you should-but cannot! Josh and Jake My heart goes out to you both,I know your father suffered and most likely wanted to quit and felt as I do today(i am 46), that I will not be long on this earth. Thank god you were given the extra time to spend with him after his stroke, he loved you both soo much, now matter how hard he acted on the show.I loved watching your dad and the way he was–himself!A truly loving genuine father and a good strong man.He will be truly missed and you two boys are men and know what is best for the road ahead of you, may god be with you and help guide you in your future journey.
Capt. Phil Rest In Peace, you will forever be missed. Kathy
Jake, Josh, Crew, Friends, Brotherhood of the Sea:
I am so sorry for your loss. I admired Phil, I loved to watch him for he was my favorite. I cried when I found out that he had passed and I cried when I seen you guys on the new episode tonight. Phil really loved you boys and was very proud of you(you could always see it in his eyes). I have been looking forward to the new season of Deadliest Catch since the last one ended, I had been looking forward to watching Phil again and you guys. I will still enjoy it but I cannot lie my heart will be saddened. All of you work hard and I admire that very much. Hang in there, it will get a little easier with a lot of time but you will never stop missing your dad! You guys are in my prayers!!
Rest in peace Phil, you will be missed!!! LaRissa Bobo
Jake & Josh , Damn this Sucks. Stay Strong and try to get along. All Your dad wanted was the best for you both. Don’t know if I even want to watch anymore. Feels like we all lost something with your dads passing. To Captain Phil , calm seas and red skies at night. And for anyone with negative comments. WATCH OUT…Karma is like a boom-a-rang you better be ready to catch it when it comes back for you!
Jake and Josh, life is sometimes a funny thing. It can make you tall and proud or it can make you something completely not worth being on this planet. Your Father was a tall and proud man and the little extra that made him special, he gave to all of us. So we now all have a little piece of Phil with us.I have to say, I will miss him. God bless you.
Like everyone here, Phil was our favorite captain. We always wanted to hear what Phil had to say. When the episode showed him throwing the PE we caught it right away and were worried about him. We combed the internet to make sure he was alright. He definately was given a pass and was on borrowed time. He will truely be missed in our living room as we support the show this season as well as in reruns (our favorite show to put on especially when “nothing else is on”) and in seasons to come. Thanx to the boats that are still out there making a living by working hard. Hang in there everyone.
Oh, yeah, and Amanda….
I have given you more time then you are worth just reading your post. Do you also stalk the families of the fallen soldiers, those who have given their lives for this country, and tell them their lost child/husband/wife/brother/sister is in hell because they defended the innocent? I bet you do. Karma is going to have a field day with you.
My heart breaks with the thought of Phil being gone. Seeing the new season tonight was tough. Phil will be deeply missed. It is so funny how people we have never met can impact our lives. I love watch the show. I am so addicted to it. The lives that these fishermen lead so our economy can have the luxury of having crab for a delicious meal is just unbelievable. My heart goes out to Jake and Josh. I lost my dad 2 days before Phil passed and I know how hard it is to lose such an important person in your life. It has rocked me to the core. I pray that the boys remain strong and that their dad watches over them always. I know my dad and i both loved watching deadliest catch. His favorite captain was phil. Maybe they both will meet in heaven. God bless to the Harris family and friends. Much love always!!!
this was my favorite captain and my thought and prayers go out to the harris family and to the comment about stalking capain phil asked for this he wanted everyone to know the end to the story, the camera crew and the ship crew have been doing an amazing job and keep doing what your doing i admire you guys and to the harris boys jake if you become a captain that would be the best thing that could happen to the cornelia phil is in a better place and he is protecting you guys out now, just do what makes you happy and what you think makes hm proud of you
tonights new show was bitter sweet for me.not only did tvs best show lose its best character, the world lost a good person and a great American.
I can hardly watch DC tonight. It is so bitterswet knowing my FAVORITE captain is gone. I feel like i knew him personally. To Jake and Josh, keep on trucking boys. You already know what you have to do. Remember, it’s in your blood. Phil you are dearly missed.
Capt. Phil Harris
Gone but not forgotten
The greatest moment on “Catch” was when the Cornelia Marie successfully rescued a man washed from the deck of another vessel. Captain Phil left his station to check on the survivor’s condition. Embraced him in his arms and entire heart. Crying in joy and relief at the miracle this man was plucked from certain dead in the Bering Sea. If I remember correctly, the rescue took place on the survivor’s birthday.
We as viewers have been given glimpses of a man struggling with doubts, personal fears, responsibilities to family, vessel and crew. Searching for a catch which can not be seen. Against ice flows, cyclones and towering waves. Each in their own way the “Captains” have become heroes of the working class, but if our ship sinks, we can usually pull over to the shoulder and park rather then sink.
Captain Phil Harris; Thank you.
To David Ormsong: That was the Time Bandit crew not the Cornelia Marie crew.
Capt. Phil will be missed dearly, and I wish his boys the best.
Josh and Jake:
Please draw closer to each other now and follow your dreams. Jake, I know somday I will be watching you in the Captain’s seat – fishing is in your blood.
Josh – if fishing is not for you, whatever you choose do well and your dad will be proud.
God bless.
For David Ormsong…..The rescue of the birthday boy was Capt. Jonathon of the Time Bandit,,,Not that Phil and his crew woudn’t have done the same,I’m sure He would have.
who are we going to get to fill phils seat? its just not going to be the same. to his family both on and off the boat. you have my condolences. its day like this that make people stronger and want to live longer.
I was heart sick to hear of the passing of Captain Phil. He always made me laugh and became one of the main reasons I watched the show, though I became addicted in the first year. I looked forward to every show in every season and counted down the days. Though the show will never be the same without him, he will live on in his son’s… and in our hearts.
I have watched Captain Phil for years and wished I had a dad like him. He was strong, caring, and loving man and Captain. He will be greatly missed by more people than he knew personally, though we felt like we knew him.
My heart goes out to his family, you are in my prayers. He is not gone but watching over you, encouraging you to continue and become the men that he knew you could be and that you are. You made him proud and will continue to do so, that kind of love never fades.
And to Phil…Thank you…for everything. You will be greatly missed…next time I’m in the bar I’ll order a Duck Fart in your honor.
-Rada (Florida)
i watched aprils show…i was glad to see phil but at the same time kinda sadden knowing what happens to him.
i hope the family is doing well and all the best wishes and luck i can give them.
prayers are with you
My sympathy to the entire Harris family. The TV show will never be the same without captain Phil but I wish the crew of the Cornelia Marie nothing but the best Safe fishing
I watch with great emotion weekly, The Deadliest Catch is one of the most exciting shows on TV. My heart is sad for Captain Harris’s family. The tears run down my cheeks as I write this. He was a very colorful man,I could see the love that he had for his son’s his crew and the sea. Be comforted as he rests in the arms of the Almighty.
I have watched the show for several years calling it my “soap opera”. Truthfully, I respect any person brave to work that kind of job. Phil was my favorite captain. He reminded me a lot of my dad and my uncles, not afraid to tell it how it is. You could tell that his whole crew (not just his sons) loved him and respected him. I’m glad he got time with his sons. I would want that for my boys. Skipper, you’ll be missed. My thoughts are with your family.
Wow what a blow. Phil will be missed, it’s a tough business and he kept at it long and hard.
I hope the other captains and crews can learn to get away from smoking. Tough to do, I know, but here is an example.
Good luck to the Jake and Josh. You guys have a long, exciting life ahead of you. Don’t waste it.
RIP Phil. Boys, please try not to fight as much nowadays, your father isn’t around now to break you 2 up and ya need each other! You have been through a whole heck of a lot together, don’t let anything ever come between the brotherhood that you share, its golden. Phil was such an engaging person, so down to Earth, we all felt like we knew him personally, just by watching a TV show. It seems to me that he lived his life the way he wanted, and that’s all anyone can hope for. Celebrate with joy all the laughter shared, the good times, the great memories, the deep sincere love with which he chose to be a dad. Phil Harris will be sorely missed. Rest in peace on the calm seas of your heaven, where every pot is full of keepers and everyone always makes it home safe.
Watched an episode tonight with a lump in my throat. I’m too sensitive for this. Imagine if I knew him. Captain my Captain, good-night, you were too young to leave..:>(
Oh Amanda, we all have made bad choices in life, we have a forgiving God, just ask Amanda, and He will forgive you, ask Him, repent and ask Him into your heart. God died for you that you may have everlasting life….
Amanda – yes, what you said was WAY over the top and uncalled for.
Everyone who responded to Amanda – she drug you in and your responses were as equally uncalled for and just as inconsiderate as hers.
This site is about Phil and the Cornelia Marie, not to start a religious dog fight.
pretty cool guy ..was Capt. Phil.
That man was cool under pressure ..but my fav episodes …were when the old Marie broke down…and Capt. Phil went (bbbblllaaa).several times
Just about peed my pants..because Ive been there before. Everything goes wrong at the same time.(just gotta laugh)
Hard shoes to fill..Good luck to all the crew and kids…..Scott
I first started watching Deadliest Catch last year. I have since watched every episode numerous times, and on days/nights when there are marathon airings of all the episodes, I am glued to my TV. My favorite Captain was our beloved Captain Phil. When I heard that he had passed on, I cried as though I had lost one of my best friends–I’m crying now as I sit and write this. Captain Phil touched me in a way that no other television personality has ever done. Captain Phil will always hold a special place in my own heart. It will be hard to watch future episodes of Deadliest Catch, knowing that he won’t be there.
He was real, down to earth, stern–yet compassionate and loving. The love he felt for Josh and Jake is sure to stay with them for all their lives. It was so obvious how he felt for them, and that he only wanted the best for each of them–whether it was aboard a fishing vessel, or in another profession. The lessons he taught his boys will forever endure in their hearts. He may not be there physically for Josh and Jake, but I am certain that he will always be watching over them, guiding them, as they endeavor to make their dad proud.
May the crew of the Cornelia Marie always be safe and come home from each of their fishing trips.
For Josh and Jake, take heed in your dad’s words, hold dear to your hearts the love he felt for you, and be all that you can be, knowing that he is with you always.
Captain Phil–rest in peace, my friend. We lost a good man when you were called home.
Gone too soon–Captain Phil
WOW-& i mean WOW!!!! I am a hugh fan of the show & ive looked forward to the season opener for months now/ The shock of this news that i just learned today(i work nights)-has seriously made me VERY VERY SAD ! i grewup around rough necks & ive learned over my course of 39 years that Phil was indeed a class of men that very few come in-(he never forgot where he came from)& in saying that-i wished i not only had the chance to work for him & the pleasure of shaking his hand;but also having the chance to look him in the eyes & knowing he was the real MCcoy..The world needs men like this in the world & like the other captains from the show-theres no bulls%$#-its straight to the point & if ya show the creditiblity enough to warrant a piece of advice-YOU NEED TO LISTEN !! That kinda of man is dying quickly & its sad that its not noticed more by the younger generation.
Phil & his family-simply-GOD BLESS-yeah he may have been a pain in your asses most of the time- but its because he MAY have seen potential & noticed more than you think- he believed in you & rode ya hard because he knew that you were capitible of doing better-that kinda man, in ANY & I MEAN ANY business deserves to be admired & respected.. He will be missed dearly by family yes-but to the people that never had the opportunity to look him in the eyes & shake his hand,& notice what he stood for & what kinda man he REALLY was & ALWAYS will be- we are suffering a loss & by that i mean a loss of greatness thats so hard to find now adays thats genuine.. Phil sir – from myself & many others SADLY YOU will be missed. Boys are born, created & shaped by GOD-then we are fine tuned by MEN like yourself & MANY others to reach our TRUE POTIENTIAL in life- for those of us that are lucky enough to have REAL MEN in ourlives; WE THANK YOU & RECONIZE YOUR EFFORTS… YOUR EFFORTS WILL NEVER GO UNNOTICED- IT WILL BE PASSED ON !!!
Harris family,
I am so sorry to hear of your Phils passing. you do not know me but i have watched him and his boys on the show for the last few seasons and have truly wished i did know them in person.
The one thing that I could see from a mothers eyes is that he loved his sons with out question and was proud of them both. He will watch over you all and you will be blessed. No one can ever be gone as long as there is one person whom holds them in their hearts. I bet it will take a very long time for the millinons of people to pass that truly holds him in their hearts as I do.
Blessed be Harris family Blessed be.
I feel such a loss after Captain Phil’s passing but just listening to him breathe and the sound of his voice scared me. It’s such a trajedy when people are so addicted to cigarettes that it takes their lives and at such a young age. There was something about Phil that grabbed people, probably his love for life and surely adventure. It won’t be the same not seeing him on the program but I will always be a loyal watcher and I pray for the health and safety of all the cast.
My Prayers go out the harris Family a Family mand and loved man that every one got to know is gone. it saddnes me to see him on the Premire of the 6th season knowing he has paased His birth day was on the say day as mine I am 10 years younder then what phill was i and liked him he kept family and capt’n as 2. Meek and mild he was its too bad he had to leave this world I am Visually impaired and i am watch this show since day 1 Phill in my opinion was the Best dad and Capt’ out there RiP Phill Hope the Harris family finds peace along with Phill
I met Phil at a baseball game in Anchorage a few years back and he was even more awesome in person. He had no idea who I was and he still took the time to talk to me. I think most would agree with me when I say that Phil had this aura about him of wisdom and transcendence. Anyone can just sit there and be stressed out in a trying situation but it takes a saint to make you laugh in such a situation. I hope Jake takes the throne as captain and I hope Josh takes his father’s advice to quit fishing. The job really does destroy you physically.
In the end Phil left us too early, but it seems as if he was able to make peace with God and say what he needed to say to his family, especially his sons. I feel that Phil is at peace in heaven. God has a special place in heaven for fishermen, headed by Jesus!
R.I.P. captain phil the best captain on the bering sea his boys will do him proud
To the Harris Family:
I apologize for taking so long to post this as I was deeply affected by the passing of Phil. I have had two battles with PE’s and was always concerned for Phil after his PE. His stroke (the day after my birthday) was a real shock and I was pulling for him to recover.
I am very grateful to Phil for sharing so much of his life and person on the show, he was someone who could make anyone feel like a friend. His love for his job and more importantly his sons was very strong and touching.
Josh and Jake, it is also plain to see that you both are strong young men and your father was very proud of you both. I hope that no matter what you decide to do with your lives that it turns out well and your father’s spirit goes with you always. If you guys ever get to the Los Angeles area I would be honored to buy you drinks and toast to you and your father.
Godspeed Phil, may you always find full crab pots and smooth sailing for all eternity.
wow phil is gone .. here it is april 21 2010 im on deployment in egyot with my national guard unit and just realising that one of the finest crap fisherman and true hero is gone .. i liked watching phil the most on DEADLIEST CATCH.. he had a really good sence of humor and always made me laugh when he was coming down on his boys . i thin phil brought to the show alot of character. alot of pride in what he did . he took care of his crew and he took care of his boys .. he told them the straight up onhow it was .. no holding back no letting it be easy .. he was awesome . to me phil was the dale earnhardt of deadliest catch . and i will miss him … jake and josh . keep your dads memory alive .. keep the boat going . and never look back ..
sincerly
Chris
i’ve watched deadliest catch from the start, capt phil was one of the greats,he will be sadly missed by friends and viewer’s alike,my thoughts are with his family at this sad time, your boys will do you proud phil….R.I.P..
Our thought are with the harris family.
“and death shall have no dominion, no more may gulls cry at their ears, or waves break loud on the seashores.” Dylan Thomas
I did not hear of his passing until recently and i am sad that he had to go so early. As i watch this season i have a heavy heart..but what he gave us thru the television will go on forever. Do something kind for someone u dont know, go out of your way to say something nice to someone, like he did. He would be proud. And i would like to know what kind of gum he always chewed..Ive wondered that from the beginning?..
I really appreciate what these guys for the united states. They risk there lives every season. All that i can tell you is that the captain is very missed. Almost out of high school, and I am coming up to alaska to fish myself with my uncle, and work in a processing plan until a chance of a lifetime comes about on a vessel.
As I sat at watched the Catch last night, I heard a little sniffle. I looked across the room and there sat my boyfriend of 30 years. He was letting tears roll. He had always given me teases about watching the show and how emotional I had gotten over it. I asked him why he was upset, and he said ya know I always give you crap about watching this show, but they lost a good Captain there in Phil. We both cried together. Here all along he loved the show. We want to tell the family, the crew of the Cornelia Marie and the film crew you are all in our prayers. Jake and Josh, you are left to carry on your fathers legacy and no matter what you do, you make him proud. He surley was not shy about letting everyone know how much he loved his boys. Every time I walk down to the lake in our town you all come to my mind. Be careful to all the boats and fishermen. We love you all.
I loved Captian Phil!! He was my most favorite Captian!! He was a very funny guy and anyone watching could tell how much he loved his sons Jake and josh. I’m sure it must be difficult for them losing their dad so suddenly. My heart and prayers go out to them and their family!! I will miss watching Captian Phil on Discovery!! He made the show a real “eye graber”…Rest in Peace, Captian Phil!! You will be missed.
Feel as if I knew you Phil …. and feel as if I’ve lost a friend ….
To the Harley riding, cigarette smoking, caffeine swigging fisherman who was Phil Harris …. Rest in Peace …. and perhaps you can now show the Big Man up there how to REALLY fish !
‘…. and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by …. and quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over ….’
Capt Phil you will be greatly missed. I feel like i knew him well even though i have never met him. He was a real man, Hard worker and dedicated to his kids. Josh and Jake you know he was proud of you both and he knows that both of you are going to be very sucessful in life. I would be proud to work next to either of you. I wish you Fare winds and following seas RIP Phil.

God Bless you and your family. You will be missed. The show just is not going to be the same!
Amanda, I think they need to put your ass in a pot and throw you overboard!
Rest in peace and watch over all of us!
I think Phil was doing what he wanted to do.
I want to go out the same way.
God Bless
My wife Candace and I have watched Deadliest Catch since the beginning. You get to know the different crews and individuals and you become attached to certain ones. It was that way for us and Captain Phil. We are heartbroken that he has left this world and we want to wish the family, friends and co workers all the best during this difficult time and please know that we are praying for all of you.
amanda is just mad that everyone loves phil and no one loves her and she weighs like 600lbs and no one wants to be with her and she has more crabs than all the boats combined ur moms rotting in hell cuz of her bad habit of having sex (to put it nicely)and she got preg with u…that was her mistake and the DOCTORS gave her a 2nd chance at an abortion and we all see that did not happen i feel for your kids (praying to god u dont have any cuz ur not worth it) how do u like it? BUT this isnt about u no one cares about u its about phil and the people closest to him and the rest of us who felt like we all lost someone when phil was taken from us…amanda i will see u in hell
May the light be with you, the sun on your face and a blanket for your bed. May you always have water and shade, Captain Phil.
I am so sorry to hear that Phil has passed on. My heart goes out to his family, both Josh and Jake and all the crews of the Deadliest Catch (including filming crews) that knew him best. He is a very much loved man and it breaks my heart that I won’t be able to see him on television any more. My family and I loved to see both his frustrations and fatherly pride in those boys. We love them all so much.
Bless you, Phil. Thank you for letting so many of us into your life. You were – always will be – class. Bless you, man.
RIP Capt. Phil
RIP phil josh jsake stay strong live life to the fullest
i have missed the last season of dealiest catch due to not being able to get discovery chanel .
Last week i finally had a chance to see the start of this seasons one and over here in the uk and they had a catch up program before the first episode and at the end of the catch up show they dedicated the catch up to Phil Harris and when i saw it my heart sank and i’m not ashamed to admit it i did shed a few tears i was so shocked
My heart goes out to his family and crew for their loss .
Although i never knew him personally i was allways cheering for him to find the “sweet spot” and and have a season where nothing breaks down on the boat .
i love the show and the crew of all the boats however Phil was my favourite .
I will miss you Capt. Phil. You were, and still are, my favorite capti. I loved your work ethic. But more importantly how you treated your family. You have always reminded me of my father. It is real hard for me to watch the show but just knowing your on it, I do. Plus your boys just plain crack me up! Thank you for being you!
Jake and Josh Im so sorry for your lose. Losing your father is not easy, I lost mine when I was 15. But just think of all the great times and please dont dwell all the hard times. Its so not worth the time. I wish you both luck in all you do!
I just want pay my respects to Phil’s family. I am watching the series on the Discovery Channel and I will remember Phil as a great guy with a big heart.
He will be missed. They are a little behind with the series in the Netherlands, but that’s allright, so we can still enjoy him being on the television. Phil is watching us from upthere.
I have been watching the new season and I am glad to see Jake getting back on his fathers boat where he belongs. Just listening to Phil and his fatherly pride he has has brought tears to my eyes every episode knowing what we all know now happened in the future. I will miss him, and I know Jake and Josh will be alright. You will be missed by many Phil.
I’ve watched the show for as long as it’s been on and have always been fond of the Cornelia Marie’s strong bond that is led by Captain Phil and his two sons. Just an all around great crew of guys that would do anything for Phil and I’m glad I got to know him through a TV show for so many years. Jake & Josh, you guys are really lucky to have that time with your pops and I know you know that, I wish you both the best and look forward to hearing about your success sometime soon! Phil, you will always be missed and thank you so much for being a great dad, I wish my dad would have done a tenth of the things you did for your boys and just telling them how much you loved them was a great sight to see! R.I.P. Phil! Best wishes Harris boys!
I just wanted to say how much I liked watching Phil and his crew on the Cornelias Marie. I love the show and will miss watching my favorite Captain.
I remember the first time I saw the show and Phil was scolding his son for going out and using his credit card to buy a big flat screen TV. It was hilarious. God you Bless you Phil and your family, and I know that your son will be the next Great Captain because he’ll have you looking down on him steering him to that sweet spot with all the crab.
Sincerely,
Bill B.

We in Great Britain will dearly miss Captain Phill,he became part of our family every thing stopped in our house when the deadliest catch came on, we felt as though we were there when any of the crews where hurt or went over board, we cried when any of the fleet crews where lost at sea,we the sharpe family were very upset when we heard of Captain Phills death our hearts and minds go out to his family, please keep up his passion for the catching the crabs, you can take comfort in that he died doing something he lived his life for GOD BLESS Captain Phill peace go with you
Our family enjoyed the company of Captain Phil Harris, his Son’s, and the Crew of the Cornelia Marie each time the Deadliest Catch aired. We enjoyed their presence as though they were actually in our home. Especially that of Captain Phil. He will be missed by us all.
Hi what a man more like a giant with his charisma and im sure he leaves behind many heartbroken people who are in our thoughts and our prayers every day.Phil will always be there be it the breeze accross the ocean or the cawing of the gulls this was a man who gave his life for what he believed in and loved doing and im sure he wouldnt have had it any other way.R.I.P and im sure god will have an ocean put aside for the entity that was Capt Phil Harris.
Though we only saw him on DC, it was easy to see Phil Harris was a good man, he loved his family, his job & his life. We’ll miss seeing Phil on DC and hope Josh & Jake learned well from their dad and are up for the challenges that lie ahead no matter the path they take. So sorry for your loss.
Captain Phil – you are an inspiration. I never really liked watching Deadliest Catch in the beginning but your boat, crew, sons and yourself all made Deadliest Catch one of my favorite shows. It breaks my heart that you are gone and you will forever be missed but never forgotten. You were by far my favorite captain and I will always think of you when it comes to crab
You were strong, tough and forever caring. Everyone that knew you is lucky. Although I never got to meet you, you are such an inspiration.
i am watching DC on Discovery in the UK at the moment S6 and watching Phil knowing that he is no longer with us is very hard but am doing it because 1 i love DC and 2 and more important i am helping to keep the memory of Capt Phil alive and as long as we watch and speak his name he is not really dead in our hearts.
To Capt Phil And all his family, I will miss You Capt Phil you were like a father to me. I loved the way you were passionate about the sea & what you were doing. there are not many people that are passionate about what they do or have the drive in life that we both share. Fair winds & clam seas Capt. Phil I will alway’s love you & your family
to the family and crew ,my deepest condolances ,may god keep phil in his arms, fair winds and calm seas boys ,phil your a great capt. ,father, and family man ,i’ll miss him on the show

captain Phil Harris was ouite an phenominal captain, crab fisherman, and individual his absence on the Bering Sea doing what he loved will be profoundly felt for all time.god bless and rest his soul in eternal peace smooth sailing captain Phil.
The both of us were caught off guard by the news of Phils death. He will be missed! It is our hope that his sons carry on and continue to fish as they are both respected as was there father. We also wish Jake luck in his current situation with the courts.
We have been watching the new season and both discuss how different it will be to see the show without phil in the next season. We do hope that Jake and Josh continue with the show. Know that there are many out here that are with you in spirit. From what we read you both have a lot of support through the other boats and their crews. Look to them for support. You are in our prayers. David and Shelly.
Hey Guys,
Learn to love and respect each other, you’ll understand someday that you’re all you really have in life. Money comes, and money goes, and no matter how much you ever have, it will never be enough. Same goes for women actually…..but when the chips are down, family is what will pull you through.
Your dad really seemed to be a great guy, and I always watched the show with a great deal of respect for what you guys go through to make a living. I can honestly say that I wish my father was half the man that Phil Harris was, and how envious I am of you both that you were able to not only learn from him, but also to be so close to him.
God bless and good fortunes.
Captain Phil is a true personification of a great man. His genuine caring for his crew was palpable. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to family and friends. Rest In Peace Captain Phil I wish I could have had the privilege of knowing you personally. Jake-Josh you lost a real hero, but he will always be with you in spirit. Take care and make him proud.
Just learned about Capt Phil’s passing away.
Nothing else to say, but deepest condoleances to family and friends.
Rest in peace big guy! Hope your sons make you proud!
Hope you Harris boys stop smoking. 53 is way too young, and none of us want to see this happen to you guys.
We will miss your Dad, and we are all praying for you guys and your families.
Captin Phil Harris.
A true genuine and highly respected man and a real ledgend on disovery channel.

A great loss to his family and friends and to all on the show.I only knew him through the Deadliest Catch but felt i knew him personally. He was an icon to his boys and the rest of the fishermen on the Bering sea. It brought tears to my eyes when i saw the dedication to him at the start of the new season,he was a great man and a great Captain you will be sadly missed, hope you find the sweet spot Captain Phil. you deserve it.
Phill Harris, you were and are the the greatest.

Deadliest Catch will never be the same without you !!
Although I never met you you have been with our family for a long time. You, your boys and the crew have made an everlasting impact on us all. Rest well my friend god’s speed
To the Harris Family and Friends,
I was deeply saddened when I heard that Capt. Phil had passed.
I became a fan of the show because of him. I came late to the party, as I generally don’t like or watch “reality” shows, but once I saw Capt. Phil and the Cornelia Marie crew I was hooked. He was like the father I never had. His honesty, integrity and pure unbridled passion for fishing uplifted me and inspired me to push through some fairly rough times.
Just watching him reinforced my drive to do what inspires me and constantly reminds me that without passion there is no point.
Capt. Phil is going to be missed but, for me, will continue to inspire and remain in my heart.
My deepest condolences.
Thank you Capt. Phil Harris
I know that phill has passed some time and till this day seeing him on TV be he passed make my heart sink knowing he not around but yet in a better place I donno what to say but state of shock. My prayers go out the friends and family of harris’s. I have watch phill since day 1 and it still brings tears to my eyes . all i can say is God bless. and good luck to all the Children.
Respect….no more pain.
I can’t imagine the show with out Captain Phil but I atleast hope to see the CM continue and his sons keeping the legacy of thier father. Captain Phil is and always be our favorite captain to read the story above really hurts my husband and I both say he reminds us of our dad not real sure why maybe that ruffneck teddy bear in him but he was a truly special individual that will be missed by many and many of fans.
May you Rest In Peace Captian Phil
I read somewhere that last week’s episode was Captain Phil’s final show of 2009. If that’s true, I’m not sure I’ll be able to watch tomorrow night. Captain Phil and the CM crew have always been my favorites, and for some reason I always felt some kind of connection with Captain Phil. Maybe it was his down-to-earth personality. Until a couple of days ago, I figured that was it and the fact that we were the same age. A couple of days ago I found out that Captain Phil and I shared the exact same birth date (December 19, 1956). While others will view this as a coincidence, I choose to view this fact as the reason I felt a special connection with him. I’ll miss you forever, Captain Phil. Thanks to the Harris family for sharing this dear man with us.
Dear Josh and Jake, We were so sorry to hear about the passing of you dad. You were very lucky to have a dad like him. He was strong and hardworking but was soft ,kind and loving on the inside. He taught you both well about working hard and love of family and friends.Go out there and make your father proud.God bless you both and the crew of the Cornelia Marie. We all hope to see you back next season! We love and will miss you Captain Phil! God Bless, Joe and Kathy
I had my wife tape many episodes for me while serving in Iraq. This killed me when I learned CPT Phil died. I’m not sure how I can watch the show now that Phil has passed. I will always remember what a great man he was. RIP CAPTAIN, we the soldiers in Iraq will miss you…………
Josh and jake we will all miss your dad he was one of the best and thought about you both so proudly continue in his footsteps and never forget such a well loved and very thoughtful man.

Capt Phil was my all time favorite of the whole show. And I will miss him a bunch. The show will not be the same without him. I will continue to watch, and hope his sons will carry on where he left off. Rest in peace Capt Phil. Know that you were much loved and will be sorely missed by a lot of people.
R.I.P. Capt Phil Harris you are going to be sadly missed. jason, north wales, UK
Josh, Jake and family. I’m sorry to wait so long to send my thoughts, prayers to you. Alittle bit about why the show is loved. My mom has terminal lung cancer. No cure, she has been through 2 different expermental treatments which decreased the size of the tumors for awhile but no longer. Your dad had the stoke on my 52 birthday. It was a shock to all who love the show and to mom and I as the show is something we have watched, laughed and cried over together and the antics of the crews. Your dad was of course our fav capt. Not only because of his personality but the love and care he had for others and life showed through.plus I loved his tat’s (mama did’nt, doesn’t like mine either for a matter of fact). I ride a Harley and I think all riders feel a kinship with other riders. Anyway, I still watch the show, aching for one last glimpse of Capt Phil. Hero worship ? maybe, don’t know, I do know yall have, YES have (he lives on in each of you) a very special father, one who was man enough to say I love you and show his affection for you. Always remember his love, his values, his belief in you and you won’t go wrong. Your father and you Jake and Josh will always be in my prayers. If ever you’re in the central Alabama area and need a hot meal, a place to crash, email me and I’ll fix you up. Plus mama would love to meet you. Take care of yourselves and your familes. Kanna
Captain Phil is an immortal now. I wish he was my kid.
Captain Phil, I lost my best friend, Don, shortly after you, in October. He loved to argue just for the sake of arguing. So if you run into him in the Great Beyond, you’ll have a life long partner. All I know is that I wouldn’t want to take you both on in real life. You both are loved and missed in this world. Fair Wind and Following Seas.
It wont be the same without captin phil. He will be greatly missed by everyone. rest in peace phil ………
I am a USCG Master Captain – and envy the experience Capt. Phil shared with so many, I won’t even come close.
But like him, I too have two sons, 10 and 8 and watching him over the last few years, he was an inspiration as a father, man, and one of the best Captains on the Bering Sea.
To Josh and Jake, be proud as I know you are, and as you look out to the horizon just off your bow, know your father sails with you … Always.
RIP Capt. Phil Harris.
phil sorry your gone ,but i know you would rather it his way than to be paralyzed and unable to to watch over jake cause hes pretty hot headed reacts without thinking rest in peace
RIP Phil Harris. The Cornelia Marie was my favorite ship in the show, with respect to the other ships
