Remembering Capt. Phil one year later

It was one year ago today that we lost the skipper of the FV Cornelia Marie.  Capt. Phil harris passed away on February 9th, 2010.  I think it is appropriate to mark this date on this website today and every year this site exists.  Capt. Phil was a big reason why “Deadliest Catch” grew in popularity.  Folks tuned in every week to experience crab fishing in the Bering Sea through Phil’s eyes… and to witness his parenting style with his two sons, Jake and Josh.  I am still receiving emails from around the world as viewers of the show are just now finding out about the loss of Capt. Phil.

At the beginning of the King Crab Season, the Cornelia Marie crew spread his ashes out on the Bering Sea, surrounded by all his friends.  I am told that this all came together in a such a way that nobody could have predicted – It turned out very well.  I am sure this will be featured on one of the early episodes this year.

If you want to participate in remembering Capt. Phil, you can go to the Discovery Channel website where you can download a profile pic to place on your facebook profile for today.  Also, many fans gather at DeadliestCatchFan.com where you can find specific groups focusing on remembering Capt. Phil.

To Josh and Jacob…wanted you to know so many of us will always remember your father even if we did not know him personally. His love for you guys was obvious on camera. One of the things his fans loved was that he was the real deal. That is what made him so endearing to all of us. He said it himself on camera…if he died tomorrow, he said he was truly lucky to have the life he did. If, we, his fans, miss him this much, we can only imagine your loss. Know that you are not alone.

Capt. Phil is missed. I will never forget the day that we were told. And then watching it on tv. I took it very hard it was like I lost a family member. I never got to meet him but watching him on tv it was like you knew him for years. He is missed. And this season is going to be so hard to watch. We love you and miss you Phil.

Capt. Phil was honestly a great man. He never pulled and punches and told it like it was. I can only hope I live a life half as amazing as his. We will never forget you.
Jake & Josh. I can only imagine how hard today is for the two of you. My heart is with you both. I know that you both will be amazing men yourselves. Your father made sure to instill the morals and values of true men.

Hello, just to say that Capt. Phil is my hero and curiously and unfortunately for me my father died today. I felt a huge loss but also reminded me a lot Phil.

On this day 1 year later I honor the memory of my favorite captain,Phil Harris.I’ve watched Deadliest Catch from the beginning & always watched with my Dad who was a Seaman. My Dad was always amazed at how ferocious the Bering Sea is & how brave the men who fish it are.He knew how wild the ocean could be after serving in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer in the North Atlantic hunting for German U-boats in WWII. It was 5yrs ago yesterday-Feb.8th-that my Dad passed away so that will always remind me to honor Phil on Feb.9th.I had a lot in common with Phil [I'm a couple years older then he was] & when he passed away I felt like I lost the brother I never had.Yes,Phil was a tough character, but he was also a good guy & had a good heart-he lived life to the fullest.Best of all,in following him & getting to know him & see what happened with his health due to heavy smoking-I quit on Nov.16th 2010 & will never smoke again-45yrs of smoking was enough after seeing what our Capt.Phil went through. In closing: “WHAT THE HEART HAS ONCE KNOWN,IT SHALL NEVER FORGET.” R.I.P. Phil,we will miss you brother.

Capt Phil, I’ll miss you today, tomorrow and always. You hold a very special place in my heart, and watching Deadliest Catch just won’t be the same without you!!! Josh and Jake, I hope life is getting a bit easier, but the 1st everythings are hard. The first Birthday he missed, the first Christmas, or Thanksgiving, and especially the 1st Anniversary of the great loss of your dad. I know, I lost my mom 10 yrs ago and my dad 8 1/2 yrs now. I can’t say that the hole ever really gets filled or that the hurt ever really goes away, but I can tell you it does get better. It takes time, but it will get better. Looking forward to seeing you all on the new season of Deadliest Catch in April! Until then, hang in there and know that you remain in our thoughts and prayers…

I think of old Irish Poems. I think of Old Native American sayings.None of them fit what today means to any of us.
We lost a person of whom all had massive respect for.2 wonderful men lost the glue that bound them to many things. A Crew lost it’s leader of which none can ever replace. The World lost a Hero of the largest degree, a man who inspired and led by example, a father figure, a teacher, a true Man of The Sea.Rest In Peace Captain Phil Harris. The world is a lot colder without you here. You are not Gone Nor forgotten, In everything we all do now we all hold a part of you.

It’s been a year? February is already a hard enough month for me with remembering a friend of mine who died on the 27th and my brother being injured in Iraq. And now with remembering Capt. Phil. He was one of those rare guys, and as cheesy as it sounds he was kind of a fatherly figure to me through the television screen. If only more people were like him.

My thoughts and prayers are with the CM crew as I have no doubt that it’s very hard for them right now. Keep your heads up, Josh and Jake and the rest of the crew. Catch those crabs! And don’t forget to look for the fart bubbles….

I was not a fan in the begining. Then as I started to watch, Phil Harris caught my eye. Most females my age would go for his sons. But there was just something about Phil. So, after that I NEVER missed an episode. I cried the day he left us & prayed for his family. He may have left us & went to a better place but he will NEVER be forgotten. RIP Phil. We love you

Captain Phil was an example of one who has the responsibility in the veins, was one of those rare people.
I wish I had the chance to meet him, and I’m a little jealous of the person who had the unique opportunity to have covivido with him.
Here in Brazil are reintroducing the 5th and 6th seasons and was very sad to know that we’re not going to rely more on the charisma of Captain Phil of the new season.
I hope that their children can continue with the same energy and charisma of our late captain Phil.
    An abrasive at all.

    I’m 36 y.o. and 3 years ago I’ve lost my mother….the boss of our company…
Now I am the new boss and I hope to be able to follow the footprint of her.
Be proud of your father and keep up !
Thanks 4 your time, and please… if possible…leave a rose on the artic water for me, in loving memory of Phil.

We will miss Phil and Season 7 will not be the same without him. His passing touched me in the way the passing of Dale Earnhardt Sr did back in 2001. They went to the other side doing exactly what they loved to do in life and that was fishing for Phil and racing for Dale. People could identify with both guys like your favorite uncle even if you had never met them in real life. These guys would come across thru TV as good guys who wouldn’t beat around the bush and tell you what they thought no matter what. Good fishing on the big crab boat in the sky.

Capt. Phil was a man that I didn’t have much respect for when I started watching the Deadliest Catch series, but in the end I found that he was a man that I much admired because of his strength and determination. He was hard on his sons, but it wasn’t that he didnt’t love them, but more like tough love. God bless you Capt. Phil and my prayers are always with your family.

Captain Phil had such a gruff exterior, but inside had a good heart. The love he showed to his sons, Josh & Jake was like no other. He was boss and father, mentor and sounding board.

Phil will be missed for ever. As a father, captain and friend.

To Josh and Jake: Your dad was loved by many and will continue to live through both of you and in the hearts of many. Your dad would want you to continue on with your lives and is proud of you whether you continue fishing or choose another career.

May God bless you both and continue to give you the strength to carry on.

Captain Phil was awesome, you knew what he expected and where you stood. Jake-do your dad proud and stay clean. Josh be there to support your brother. I understand the tough love capt. Phil doled out, have had to do it with our kids and we have 12. I promise it was very hard on him to do it. I still cry every time I see the reruns of last season. Captain Phil will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

As a lot of others I just found out of Capt. Phil’s passing. He will be missed by many as he will be missed by my son and I, as we are big fans of the series. And it will not be the same without Phil at the wheel of the C M. God bless you Phil, RIP,and ride free brother.

I was always watching the deadliest catch to see what Captain Phil was up to.

Jake & Josh – you have had your own struggles but know that your dad is looking down upon you and he is proud of you both. Keep fighting the fight.

Capt. Phil passed away on my 50th birthday. Having watched DC from the beginning I have admired him and how much he loved Josh and Jake. He knew the value of hard work, but also lived life! I was in tears all weekend watching the lead-up to the new season and wishing it were all a dream and Capt. Phil would be back. Love to his boys and know that you have an angel above watching over you! I have lost both my parents and never a day passes when I don’t think about them. God Bless Josh and Jake!

With just 1 day left until the new season, I Can’t wait! I have always loved this series!

I am so excited to see Josh and Jake, though I don’t know them personally or their late father, I was deeply moved by his tragic death.

Phil Harris was an amazing man who showed great love and affection towards his two sons. How comforting to know how much he cared for his boys and to know he will always be watching over them no matter where they are.

Just watching Josh and Jake on this series shows what a great father and mentor they had. These two men are remarkable and how proud their father Phil Harris must be of them.

You guys stay safe out there! And I really look forward to seeing the Cornelia Marie in a few days! :)

I’ve spent some time out on the water and in the ice . . . but not like these people. I got hooked on the show but most especially on seeing that world through Phil’s eyes. I dig all the captains and crews, but I always enjoyed seeing Captain Phil Harris. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I am missing my main man, Phil.

  90. Raymond Brown April 12, 2011 at 8:58 pm #

To Phil’s sons. I didn’t know your father, but he had a sincere and genuine quality that made me feel as if I did from watching the show. I too have a father that tells me exactly how he feels.

Once I told my father that I wanted a set of weights. He said “Why?” I told him “to get stronger!” Well that evening he brought home some post hole diggers!” He left me a bunch of cut up telphone posts to make a fence. That evening when he came in. He yelled at me working slowly. I showed him the blister that covered my entire palm. He began cussing me. I said “Dad my whole hand is a blister; how could I work any harder?” He started yelling “DAMNIT! If you had wore gloves I could have worked you tomorrow!!!”
Dad is just as full of wisdom as he is of tough love. (Like your father finding crabs because he smelled their fart bubbles?”
Phil was one a hell of a man and I am sorry for your loss.

I discovered DC since half a year and ever since I watch it every night. I was shocked to hear that Phil had died. Yesterday I saw Day of Redemption and felt so sad afterwards. Phil was my favorite member because he was so warm and goodharted. Josh and Jake I wish you all the strenght, your father is loved by so many people all over the world. I loved to see the seagull on dek of the Northwestern, I cried and smiled XX

Every time I watch deadliest catch or hear about crab fishing I’m reminded of phil. Even though most of us never met him we all felt connected to him, his boys, and the awesome crew.

The Deadliest Catch was made popular by Phil’s outgoing personality, and awesome presence. He was truly inspirational, and a good father.

We miss you Phil, and you will always be remembered.

I know my comment is a little late but this Irish poem says how I feel…..

“May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.”

cpt. Phill was the one person i liked most when watching Deadliest catch! in his personality one could see he was strait on honest guy and i would feel lucky to have him or people like him as my friends.. I would say i will miss him but im afraid that would not be fair to his friends and family that really know what it means to miss him, but i will certainly remember him

I have watched all the seasons of Deadliest Catch on Netflix and it was a joy to watch Phil Harris become the star of that show. He was a natural showman with a sense of timing that made it very interesting to watch. He is irreplaceable. We miss him.
