FV Northwestern under State Investigation for Rat

Do you remember during the fifth episode of Season 8 when the crew of the FV Northwestern finds a rat aboard?  The crew plays around with the critter until finally it goes overboard.  Well, now apparently the State of Alaska is investigating the FV Northwestern for “harboring a rat” which can amount to a fine of up to $200,000 dollars.  This story definitely has to be filed under the “Are you kidding me?!?” category.  It’s a real story which you can read and/or listen to right here by By Stephanie Joyce, KUCB – Unalaska.

Oh for heaven’s sake!! If this is true what a crock!!
What about the bottles, paper, packages and gunk tossed out by the rest of the human race…???? People will go to no lengths to make others unhappy. What has the world come to? tsk tsk.

    • John E. Callsvik October 26, 2012 at 9:19 pm #

Mary you are so correct! What about that Pacific ring of trash that is circulating in the middle of the ocean?

    • Sean Baron October 26, 2012 at 9:38 pm #

Very true statement. People need to worry about there own shit. Also do not bring people down you need to bring them up, so that the world will be a better place. Negative people suck!

      • Diana Hernandez November 2, 2012 at 3:17 am #

Very true statement..Mr. Sean Baron…we should not bring people down…only make them feel good..so that the world will be a better place. Negative people don’t suck not to me …but they do kill …self esteem …that is why we have so much violence….

Really? A rat on a ship? Like this is new? Go after the boats harboring illegal people, drugs, and merchandise.

  4. Catherine Haig October 26, 2012 at 6:26 pm #

Well the state of alaska had Gov Sarah Palin living and governing there. She is a rat. I would just call this even. $200K – really? How desperate is Alaska for money? I guess that rat Palin stole a lot of money when she lived in the Frozen tundra.

    • Rebecca October 26, 2012 at 6:51 pm #

Sounds like someone is jealous of Sarah Palin. I think more women should be like her. You sound like one of these liberal women who hate any woman who is conservative and has values.

      • Tim Stolar October 26, 2012 at 7:06 pm #

        Way to go Catherine!!!

      • Ben October 26, 2012 at 7:17 pm #

          LOL Ben!! Amen!

          • Lynda October 30, 2012 at 4:42 pm #

Lol both Tim and Ben and Catherine!! Sarah Palin Was and Is a joke! Just because she’s a woman doesn’t mean crap. Rebecca, I bet your one of those “females” that would just vote a woman Into office regardless of their ignorance, their being unqualified in So many ways- just to say we put a woman in office! She is just a joke. Lets look realistically at all the “good” she Has done for Alaska……. umm, ok never mind, there isn’t anything. Except for drawing attention to Alaska so others rush into the state, rip up the land, pollute the waters, environment and increase the crime rate. Oh, she also made her daughter, Bristol “famous” for being an unwed teenage pregnant child who somehow went on tv on “Dancing With The Stars”!!! I Still ask how That happened?! I mean, how is She famous? By being the daughter of a “wanna be” and a teenage mother at the age of ??? hmmmmm

        • tracye October 26, 2012 at 7:50 pm #

Dear Ben, Sarah Palin didn’t say she could see Russia from her porch. Tina Fey impersonating Sarah Palin said that. The Government will continue to get more intrusive into all of our lives as long as people accept it.

          • April October 26, 2012 at 7:56 pm #

Trayce you are wrong. Tina Fey said that while making fun of Sarah Palin for saying that. Check your facts.
If Sig and the boys aren’t on the show anymore, there’s no point in watching it anymore. It’s been hard enough watching it without Captain Phil.

        • the alaskan fisherman October 26, 2012 at 9:16 pm #

Hey Ben, go shoot yourself in the head, you are too fucking stupid to tell reality from fiction, it was Tina Fay on SNL that said that… This explaines why so many people voted for obama, they think Saturday night live and the daily show are the actual news

          • stephen james lewis October 27, 2012 at 12:31 am #

so many people voted for obama because they’d had enough of the republicans and there constant warmongering and generally immoral if not illegal behaviour.
The state of alaska would do well to leave the northwestern and the rest of the fleet alone as they bring in so much money to alaska.
To fine the nothwestern $200,000 for “harboring a rat” is lunacy if not downright demented.

          • Vee October 27, 2012 at 1:15 pm #

You are right, alaskan fisherman, for all others, please read:

It was actually comedian Tina Fey, who was impersonating Ms. Palin on Saturday Night Live, who uttered the line that is now widely attributed to the former Alaska governor.

The basis for this line comes from a September 2008 interview with ABC News’s Charles Gibson, who asked Palin what insights she had from her state being so close to Russia. She responded: “They’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.”

This is true. As Slate has pointed out, on a clear day, those on the Alaskan island of Little Diomede can see the Russian island of Big Diomede, located across the International Date Line some two and a half miles away. Given that Big Diomede has no permanent population, the amount of foreign policy experience one can gain from staring at it is debatable. But you can see Russian soil while standing in Alaska.

          • Clark April 10, 2013 at 2:06 am #

Hey ass fisherman go shoot yourself in the head, one less stupid ass republican to deal with. Sarah Palin did say that, among many other stupid comments that showed the level of her intelligence. Her comments where on every Network except one, Fox the Republican news network.

        • jj April 9, 2013 at 9:40 pm #

FYI you CAN see Russia on certain days from eastern most Alaska you twat.

      • Patricia Driscoll October 26, 2012 at 7:33 pm #

10 bucks says Sarah Palin is better looking than Catherine too. Nothing uglier than a jealous woman! LOL and by the way Catherine Haig I’ve never heard of you before……what exactly have you done with your life?

        • Mike October 27, 2012 at 2:38 am #

Haig is another liberal who compains and waits for her Obama money every month. That is enough to know.

      • Kimberly October 26, 2012 at 7:48 pm #

        Well said Rebecca

      • Amy October 26, 2012 at 8:01 pm #

I like Sarah Palin! She’s hard working and raises her family. I’m sure she had to work for her money!

      • Christine October 26, 2012 at 8:06 pm #

Thank GOD there aren’t more women like Sarah Palin!!!! There are enough stupid women in this world!!!!

        • Carole October 26, 2012 at 11:13 pm #

Yes Christine, and apparently you are one of them! Just saying! Thank God we are not all like you. Mean, hateful & vindictive! Have a great day

          • Clark April 10, 2013 at 2:15 am #

No Carol you are one for supporting the STUPIDEST WOMAN in Politics. Thank your god we are not like you, an ignorant republican bitch!

      • lori lynn October 26, 2012 at 8:30 pm #

I have nothing to b jealous of where this nit wit is concerned. Im smarter, have more class and raised my daughter with class n self respect n to be a productive member of society. Waaaay more than this crook can ever say. Alaska should go after her for the $200K they need instead of trying to get it from someone thats honest n hard working. Values palin knows nothing about.

      • Mike October 27, 2012 at 2:35 am #

Yep, them Liberals will take jabs wherever they can. Kuddo’s to you Rebecca.

Keri are you paying for the helicopter ride? Why are so many people jealous of others?

    • MaryPat October 26, 2012 at 7:36 pm #

I really do think that some people need to go get a life then to talk bad about someone you don’t know..
Sarah Palin would have made one heck of a President! But that’s my opinion

      • Kimberly October 26, 2012 at 7:51 pm #

again, well said MaryPat and Big Bob…..I would of voted for Sarah!!!

        Really????

    • Big Bob October 26, 2012 at 7:43 pm #

The only rat we can see is you Catherine Haig or is it Hag!!!!

      • Kristin October 26, 2012 at 9:48 pm #

You know that is really uncalled for….. how are u going to discriminate about someone making there own opinion???? Thought that was the point of being in America???? Well Catherine I did not like Sarah Palin either…. which would be why I didn’t even listen to what she had to say…. but as for the rest of you…. if you can not be a little respectful to others you don’t know…. then don’t comment on what they have to say…. from what I have read it sounds like a bunch of 6 year olds! That is sad because my daughter who is that age shows more respect then you so called adults…. and it is a bunch of bull that the northwestern should get fined for that.

        • bud November 2, 2012 at 8:05 am #

way to go Kristin even my 4 year old has more respect than most of these so called adults in this chat line

        • jj April 9, 2013 at 9:44 pm #

Point of being in America is about “own opinions”? If that’s how you define America I do feel sorry for your daughter. Facts be damned and idiots rule supreme I suppose.

    • tim October 26, 2012 at 7:59 pm #

Sarah Palin got famous from being plain STUPID! She is the single biggest reason McCain lost the presidency. She and her daughter are horrible family role models. She does not follow through on commitments, ie. elected positions, just so she can make more money on TV. Thinks she can see Russia from her back porch. Oh, I can go on and on.

      • jj April 9, 2013 at 9:46 pm #

Tim Idiot nobody cares if you hate her or why, but don’t distort facts. Palin is the ONLY reason McCain got any votes from his side. The Dems state this themselves.

    • tracye October 26, 2012 at 8:00 pm #

Catherine, Did you know that because of Sarah Palin each citizen of Alaska gets a check every year from the oil companies that drill for oil in Alaska? Last year’s was close to $1300.00. She could come be Governor of my state anytime. She left as Governor with one of the highest approval ratings for an elected official ever. So she must have done a lot of good as Governor. Don’t believe everything you hear from others. Do your own research before you decide you don’t like someone.

      • Melinda October 27, 2012 at 6:59 am #

Ahh, obviously you don’t live in Alaska! Sarah Palin did not start out PFDs! Those were started in the 1980s after the oil pipeline was finished and producing good revenues. So don’ t sit and talk about something you know nothing about! Oh and something else you probably didn’t know, we Alaskans don’t get the same amout of money every year it is based on the price of oil. It actually fluctuates this year we only got $878.00, so do you think you know what you’re talking about now? And yes I live in Anchorage, Alaska have for 16 yrs!

    • the alaskan fisherman October 26, 2012 at 9:10 pm #

Fuck off dipshit, don’t ever come to Alaska talking that crap, we love Sarah.
Now go put your lib head back up Obama’s ass, and go back to sleep

    • Charlie Pehl October 27, 2012 at 2:29 am #

Why are you libs so nasty and mean sprited. I thought it was us on the right who are so intolerent.

illegal people, drugs, and merchandise? pffftt we need the illegals for jobs no one will take, we need merchandise that ‘falls off the truck” to save money, and of course that money can go to the stuff that keeps a lot of us from beating someone! >:) leave them all alone!!!

    • PWoww October 26, 2012 at 6:58 pm #

  7. Robin Williams-Stringer October 26, 2012 at 6:27 pm #

Is this for real ? I mean are we talking a ship Rat ? If so for gooness sake whe we went PCS to Iceland the dock hands dropped 1 of our crates overboard then loaded it anyway , when it was delivered to us they also delivered a SHIP RAT , thats part of living at sea !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I should have sued the Air Force lol

  8. Pey October 26, 2012 at 6:28 pm #

ummm yeah Let’s not chase the illegal stuff like drug dealers and fishing. Let’s harass the hell out of the honest ones. What ever happened to common sense??

  9. Guy October 26, 2012 at 6:29 pm #

this is a bunch of B.S. I can understand there point but if they tossed it in the ocean… the animal rights movement would be after those guys…. a big heart can get you in trouble sometimes.

    • Robin October 26, 2012 at 8:49 pm #

I completely agree. I am just afraid that this will push Sig to pull the Northwestern from being filmed in any future seasons. I think that the state of Alaska needs to really examine this law and realize that rats are attracted to any place that has food.

  10. pissed October 26, 2012 at 6:30 pm #

are you kidding me that is just ridiculous just show how low americans go to get money in there pockets

  11. Shannan October 26, 2012 at 6:33 pm #

This is crazy you can come up with something better then that. This is insane when someones making somebody always has there hand out . This was a rat ok.

  12. Theresa October 26, 2012 at 6:34 pm #

It seems to me that a LOT of the reality shows airing out of Alaska have provided the Alaskan Govt with opportunity to ‘cash in’ on the t.v. money.
This happened with Gold Rush, all the dig sights were shut down and fined for OSHA voilations and lack of ‘training’ only AFTER the show aired, but had been operating for YEARS prior to the tv shows bringing attention to them.
So.. hey Alaska Govt… leech off of some ‘real’ issues!

  13. LeeAnn October 26, 2012 at 6:35 pm #

OMG! whats this world coming to? in order to “harbor a rat” do you not have to KNOW it was there to begin with? I hope that if they are fined that they pay the fine all in pennies! (idea takien from one of my favorite NASCAR drivers)

  14. Carol S.` October 26, 2012 at 6:35 pm #

After reading the referred article, the last paragraph “Fish and Game’s Meehan says while he’s happy Burdell didn’t get released on Akutan, tossing rats overboard isn’t the preferred method of disposal. Rats are strong swimmers, so trapping or poisoning them is the only way to ensure their demise.”is ludicrous – If a person can’t survive more than a few minutes in the Bering Sea, why on earth do they think a rat would fare any better????

    • Morgan Howard October 26, 2012 at 6:42 pm #

That’s going to be one helluva strong swimming rat- to make it to shore from the middle of the Bering Sea!

  15. michelle g October 26, 2012 at 6:47 pm #

This is the most ridiculous thing I have read about. The alaska government is not serious about giving them a fine. Come on now. Whatever.

  16. Todd Wood October 26, 2012 at 6:52 pm #

    Catherine Haig your an idiot!!

    • Allen Wells October 26, 2012 at 7:12 pm #

I agree not only is she misinformed, Gov. Palin has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. Catherine Haig is just another puppet that has been denied the intelligence to think on her own. As far as Alaska fish & game, It would’nt be their first mistake. What is the chance a rat would survive in the Bering sea,34degree water or colder ? also the ferrocity of the Bering sea. Sorry Catherine for you quit being a hater!!!!!

  17. phyllis seavey October 26, 2012 at 7:01 pm #

i guess the state of Alaska must have a low crime rate up there to have to investigate something as stupid as this. talk about a waste of money. i hope they get laughed out of court if its goes that far. come on really

  18. Mike October 26, 2012 at 7:19 pm #

Well lets take it if that rat manage to survive a swim back to Alaska. The rat deserved to survive.

  19. Shannon October 26, 2012 at 7:24 pm #

    Poor rat drowned :(

  20. Russell Needham October 26, 2012 at 7:32 pm #

Do none of you realize how much disease a rat carries? Rats are everywhere, But we don’t want rats from other lands here. The fact that they played around with it is bad enough. Twenty thousand dollars is nothing compared to what it would cost infected people. Ecosystems are destroyed when rodents and other animals are introduced from other lands to new ones.

So please see why harsh fines are imposed. We all must Take care of our lands. Some lessons are more costly than others. If we didn’t have regulations, Our oceans and lands would be destroyed already.

    Peace to all.

    • Joe October 26, 2012 at 7:43 pm #

its $200,000 dollars Russell, and that rat didnt last 2 minutes in thse frigid waters ya moron!

    • shawn October 27, 2012 at 8:32 am #

first off they said 200 thousand not 20 thousand wich is rediculous enough second rats are not as dirty as you think they spend more than 70% of their life cleaning themselves 20% eating and fucking and 10% sleeping but they do get fleas that carry the diseases

  21. Leroy October 26, 2012 at 7:42 pm #

STFU Russel, It’s 200k NOT 20k. A rat is a rat. Just say NO to Obama! We will start by getting rid of that rat.

    • lori lynn October 26, 2012 at 8:36 pm #

I would like to c the rat episode, only instead of a rat…i wouldnt mind it being YOU!!!!

  22. scott rountree October 26, 2012 at 7:50 pm #

hey russell get a life you pay it if you think it so easy.they didnt know the rat was there.

  23. Laura October 26, 2012 at 7:57 pm #

How ridiculous! Rampant crime, rampant drugs, the U.S. in financial crisis … and THIS is what is going on??? Leave the guys on the Northwestern alone. And for those of you picking on Sarah Palin, She is only one person and isn’t even the one wanting to investigate. Put the blame on the idiots where it should go.

  24. Sherry R October 26, 2012 at 7:58 pm #

Well said Allen Wells! Some people just cant help making an ass out of themselves by bringing things into the conversation that has no substance!

  26. dee October 26, 2012 at 8:17 pm #

Are they for real?? Maybe Sarah Palin planted it there!!! The fine will cover her campaign (like she’ll get in) Rat from a rat!!! This is the most ridiculous thing Alaska could pull.Northwestern let us know what if anything we can do to help!! And Alaska better wake up pulling something so stupid!!

  27. Tamra Wrisley October 26, 2012 at 8:30 pm #

What a waste of taxpayers money. Apparently someone in Alaska has too much time on their hands

  28. Angela October 26, 2012 at 8:34 pm #

I know $200K is not to laugh at but Sig and the crew were having a good time w/ it. In fact Sig even stated that in Norway, rats are good luck on a fishing boat. During the string of pods that they were pulling up after that incident were full. So Sig paying $200k is nothing for him. As for Sarah Palin, you all have your opinions and I have mine. I don’t think that they will ban the Northwestern from airing anymore cuz it’s basically the flagship of the show. I’m sure Sig will come up w/ the $ for the fine and everything will be back to “normal”

  29. Kellie October 26, 2012 at 8:36 pm #

This is not a political post so cut the shit, stop being so intolerable so sick of this it’s everywhere!!!!!! As a lot of you said this is such a wast of time and money the rat died in that water it’s just crazy. If Northwestern doesn’t come back because of this I’m done watching.

  30. Kathy Guerrera October 26, 2012 at 8:39 pm #

They didn’t harbor the rat….they threw it overboard…. case closed

  31. Verónica October 26, 2012 at 8:45 pm #

Are they sure it was a rat and wasn’t Norman? jajajaja
Republicans buagggg you ought to go back to the caves and never leave them XD the cold will keep you young and spare yourselves a lot of money on cosmetic surgery hahaha

  32. Ivan Clark October 26, 2012 at 8:56 pm #

@ Russell, Do you not realize how much disease a human carries ? Humans are everywhere, many of them are sick, sorry, and basically insane. They have already spread to the far ends of the Earth and are becoming nearly uncountable in their numbers. Early signs of this sickness are among many, many other things , an overwhelming desire to have anothers posessions and a seemingly uncontrolable desire to control every aspect of anothers life , from birth to death. Left untreated, they lose any semblence of basic common sense, become driven to amass for themselves all things shiney no matter the cost, justifieing the actions of madmen, murderers, liars, and thieves ! And to think that these PINHEADS are going to make an issue of a single ( more than likely deseased ) boat rat is amazing to me. Much less comotion is made if some one tortures and rapes a child then dumpos the lifeless body in a trash can somewhere. Yeah, What the hell, lets drag a rat drownder over some hot coals , spending mucho dinero in the process! P.S. maybe I will luck out and get hammered by some flop dick spelling nazi who will set me straight on my criminal ignorance of my native written tongue.

  34. Connie October 26, 2012 at 8:57 pm #

The Rat jumped ship , it must of heard Sig being pissed off. It’s now a ratsickle . Doesn’t Alaska have better things to do then investigate this, and the fine is outrageous, find something better to do with your time Alaskans ,leave the fleet alone, you’ve already made life more difficult by cutting quotas , so give it a rest!!!!

  35. Dakota Winds October 26, 2012 at 8:58 pm #

I am guessing the Rat got on at dutch harbor or their home port. Who cares it was a rat and they got rid of it shortly after it was discovered from what I am understanding. Only animals that are equiped to live in that kind of enviroment would survive, sorry but I do not know of any rats that are so equiped.

  36. Kim October 26, 2012 at 9:27 pm #

I’m really surprised that what the state decided to go after was a rat. Remember the truck? I would think that would be a more egregious offense (despite how freaking funny it was).

  37. Dakota Winds October 26, 2012 at 9:34 pm #

hey kim or the outhouse! Just a big black eye for the state of alaska in my book.

  38. Jersey Girl October 26, 2012 at 9:42 pm #

It amazes me some of the things that the government does. However attacking each other on a website is crazy too. Voice your opinion, that is what the freedom of speech is for, but if someone has a different one than you that is their choice and we should not go into attack mode. Just sayin.

    What a bunch of Pelosi

  43. Sheri October 27, 2012 at 5:05 am #

OMG. I believe this is about the damn RAT on board the Northwestern, NOT Palin, Obama, etc. Even tho i’m NOT a fan of Obama.

A rat’s a rat. But to take it to the extreme of fining this awsome boat, and it’s owners, is well…the STUPIDEST thing i’ve read in YEARS.

Move on to what’s important here in our country. And believe me…it’s not about a single damn RAT!

  44. Lisa October 27, 2012 at 5:13 am #

Maybe the state of Alaska needs the money to finish the bridge to nowhere.

  45. shawn October 27, 2012 at 8:50 am #

How nuts is that! Even in the restaurant business the fine is not that steep for a take over! 1 really 1. I think it is really crappy that they are trying to get money they don’t deserve, or rationalize.

  50. eddie riggins October 29, 2012 at 3:46 pm #

I’m a commercial fisherman and this nothng new to me , it’s the government ( federal or state) enforcing some regulation that dosen’t amount to a hill of beans. Instead of really doing something that could truly benifit fishermen. Cmon now cut these boys a break they work hard for every penny they get.

  51. Verónica October 29, 2012 at 4:09 pm #

It seems incredible, the crabbers work very hard for every penny, as has been well said Eddie Riggins. As they work hard, they make a lot of money, that is no reason for them to want to take away a lot of money, with an excuse as poor as is the rat.

  52. rudell November 9, 2012 at 7:59 pm #

This is happening all over government is prosecuting people to the max for every little thing ,just to make money.

  53. GLL November 11, 2012 at 4:03 pm #

I am just wondering what the hell Sarah Palin, President Obama, conservatives and liberals have to do with a rat on a crab boat?! I am quite sure there are plenty of political boards on which to post your spiteful rants. The beauty of this country is that we have the right to disagree not only with each other but also with our government. It does not however mean that we have the right to insult and degrade people for their opinions. Please don’t subject those of here to read about the crab fishermen and their boats with your negativity…

As for the “harboring a rat” issue…don’t know why I am surprised, after all it is illegal to ride a camel down the street in Las Vegas…Hopefully they will continue to not enforce what I believe to be another ridiculous law.

  54. Priscilla from Maine November 27, 2012 at 2:19 am #

I have not got to that episode yet. Fined for a rat? That’s bogus. Rats are everywhere around a wharf. I doubt people would eat fish if they had ever had seen a wharf rat. Pfffft. Your gal there just need something to do besides her makeup. Have you ever been to a bakery and looked under the cookers. MMMM BIG OLE RAT TRAPS UNDER THEM. Do you suppose they get fined? NO. I have worked as a Maine crabber and I have never heard of such nonsense. She should be fining the wharf owner then. I am looking forward to the episode. It can’t be that bad. Is it? I only get it on netflix so I wont get the newer episodes. :(

I just recently watched the movie Game Change, regarding the McCain Palin campaign. Great movie regardless of which side you are on.

My opinion though, I don’t support quitters, Sarah Palin quit her job as Governor. She isn’t a role model unless you want to be a loser. There is nothing worse than giving up and quitting.

    • Doogie April 17, 2013 at 2:48 am #

Palin quit because after liberals and other communists charged her with over 30 ethics violations that Alaskans had to pay for. Funny thing is not one charge stuck but Alaskans got screwed. @theresa As for OSHA and gold rush that’s a fed agency and if you did a lil research you will find that deadliest catch actually costs the state of ak a lot more money then what they get back from letting them film up here. Also I just looooove the fact most of you are lower 48er’s commenting, you all destroyed your own states and dictate how we should destroy ours. Stay the f#ck out of our rich, resource filled, gun loving state…. Btw there was no charges for them having a rat on board nor is there talk of pressing charges!

  60. Frontflip2cool January 30, 2013 at 2:49 pm #

I saw that episode. The Rat was trying to eat the bait I think. It was so cute until it died.

  61. Brian March 21, 2013 at 5:22 am #

That can’t be true. Somebody’s got to be pulling somebody’s leg. Really?!!?

  62. MIDDIAN March 22, 2013 at 12:31 am #

Apparently someone should have kept a logbook of all the ships that sunk during the ages, it’s my opinion someone owes someone a ton of money, given the fact that when a ship goes under, it’s my understanding the “Rats” are the first to abandon ship. In case there’s an idiot that tries to say that there’s no one to left to sue… First of all not all ships go down with a full compliment. Second, there is ALWAYS someone left to sue. It’s the American way. Sad but true.
