Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial Service

The Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial Service was on May 2, 2010 at Fishermen’s Terminal.  Today was a “Service of Remembrance” for fishermen lost at sea.  The Ship’s Bell was rung for every name being added to the Memorial plaques or tiles.  One of the new Memorial Tiles included our skipper, Capt. Phil Harris.

The Ship’s Bell was also rung for Capt. Robert Royer, the skipper of the F/V Northern Belle which sank April 20, 2010.  The skipper’s family was in attendance and I was able to talk to them about our extended family on the internet.  They were very appreciative of the many nice comments that was left on our facebook page and on our website posting about Capt. Royer.

I spoke to a couple of the Directors on the Seattle Fishermen’s Memorial Board.  I thanked them for all their good work.  They are dedicated to promoting safety in the fishing fleets and easing the burden of the families and friends of fishermen/women who have lost their lives at sea.  If you would like to learn more, please visit seattlefishermensmemorial.org.  If you would like to make a contribution to the Board’s ongoing efforts, please contact them through the website or call 206-782-6577.

Looks like the Memorial for Phil went well. Sure wish that I could have been there. Still hard to believe that the greatest captain is gone. It is so hard to watch the Deadlliest Catch episodes knowing that he won’t be on there very long.. Gone to soon, but closer to the heart.

I have watched these families grow from season to season, meaning not only the families that they have on board but the families they share with the other ships, I believe from the bottom of my heart that the actions that Jonathan keeps displaying are a complete and utterly disappointment to what the Cornelia Marie and Phil would have wanted, this is family and you dont turn your back on family, Jonathan, you never askedm you assumed, dont loose another family member because you are to stubborn to ask!

  7. Kayla Fisher said:

Ginger, who in the world and what in the world are you talking about?

  8. Carolyn Bard said:

    Kayla,

Ginger is talking about the feud that has developed between Jonathan on the Time Bandit and Keith on the Wizard. Jonathan pushed Keith to the ground and told Keith to never contact the Time Bandit unless the Wizard was sinking. Jonathan believed what he was told about Keith by a 3rd party and did not verify if it was true.

Just learned today (5-8-10) of Captain Phil’s passing. We are so saddened to have heard this. He was the best of the best – so hard but yet so very compassionate, especially when it came to his sons, Josh and Jake. It will definitely be hard to see the new episodes without our favorite Captain. But knowing he’ll be watching from Heaven will be comforting to us all. Rest in Peace Captain Phil ~ you will be sadly missed. We know you’re in Heaven walking on streets of gold, hand in hand with Jesus. No more suffering, no more pain.

I loved your father as he reminded me of my father in a lot of ways. My heart goes out to his family for their loss and pain. You will never truly get over the loss but time will allow the pain to fade and the happy memories prevail. God bless you and your father.

The passing of Captain Phil has had a profound effect on me. Here was a man tough as nails but had a heart that was tender and genuine and warm. I cringe everytime I see him on the show this season knowing his days were coming to an end. Im not sure I want to see a show with him gooing down and Im not sure that will be shown but I know I dont want to see that. I want to see Phil sitting in his chair, butt in hand telling stories and enjoying life. To the boys, you had an amazing Father and all he wanted is for you to be good men and not fighting all the time, Heed his words and display in your actions and life what he wanted. For us fans, we will always have a place in our hearts for our Captain, the guy we all loved Phil Harris. Phil may heaven be filled with Red bulls, crabs, Custom Harleys, good whiskey and smooth seas. Rest in peace,,,,,

I will surely miss Phil, he was a great guy!! The Cornelia Marie, is one of my favorite F/V on the show. I am asking the Discovery Channel, to “Please leave the Cornelia Marie on the show”. We lost Phil, It would sadden me, and MILLIONS OF OTHER’S to lose the rest of the crew. May God bless Jake and Josh, and may Phil, “Rest in Peace”. THANK YOU PHIL HARRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got punched in the gut with the news of Capt. Phil. Just beside myself right now and typeless. Thoughts and prays are with the Family. Sure hope CM is left on the show and the boys can work out their differences. By the way, I have to crank the volume up for my 4 year old everytime the show starts. He love when Phil’s eye turns into the raging sea! My favorite as well.

I have to agree….watching this last King Crab season was hard knowing that Captain Phil’s death was just months away.

Jake and Josh I wish you both Godspeed. You didn’t get to have your dad nearly long enough…but clearly he loved you both.

I felt a real sense of loss when I heard of Capt Phils’ passing. The series wont be the same without him. I had thought he was looking ill at the start of the series when IIRC he got between Keith and Jonathan when they had their falling out. His wisdom and strength of character will bemissed by many in the fleet I feel. Josh and Jake I mourn your loss, but am thankful that for a while at least we were privileged to know Capt Phil – even from a distance. Only the Good Die young – and here was a great man and a great human being.

I can not express my grief enough, and have a hard time too knowing that his time is limited on the show, he was my Favorite, I hope you 2 boys are doing better, it takes time, I know folks say that too much but it does, my wishes go out to you both, to all the guys on your crew, and the rest of the fleet as well for a safe year! just remember that “all you have to do is go out on deck and look up and he’s there”
All my best to you both

Even through that I had never met you I feel that I have lost a great friend. It is hard to watch the show now but I still do. Maybe he is in a better place than we, I surely hope so. One thing that did come across all the time was his love for his kids. If there is any legacy to remember him, It will be this.

I just discovered this site, so my comments are late, but I feel like I’ve lost a personal friend with Captain Phils’ passing. My sincerest condolences to all of the family. I continue to watch the program and I pray that the boys will be able to pick up where their dad left off.
To all the Harris families; “Fair winds and following seas.”

I lost my best freind shortly after Captain Phils’ passing. Don would have been 60 yrs old this December, 2010. I miss them both so very much. Good Luck guys. As I said in my earlier message: May you have fair winds and following seas.

My father went to sea all his life, as did his father and grandfathera before him. Mariners are a strong breed of man. I believe it’s the result of the salt water that runs freely in their veins. My dad sailed for over 60 years before he retired and became a port engineer. He started at age three on his father’s schooner sailing the Pacific. Like Captain Phil, he was a man’s man…quiet, strong, sincere, and tender despite the rough surface. I miss him and I wish Josh and Jake the very best. Put aside “childish things” and assume the mantle of your dad. That was his legacy to you and the best way to honor his memory. Like you dad, my dad died suddenly. That was good. He was not wittled down, but crossed the bar with all sails pulling and all flags flying… the only way for a man of the sea.

The death of Capt Phil was so sad. I was watching the show on reruns the other night and found myself really missing him, almost as if I knew him. His kids were so strong and so devoted to him. You could see the love in the family accompanied with the hard work. RIP

It’s weird watching old episodes known that Capt. Phill has gone. He truly was one of the most important reasons to keep watching the show, just because he was such a great personality. He is and will be missed by many.
