Remembering Capt. Phil – Todd Stanley

Discovery Channel is calling tonight’s episode, “Valhalla”. The description reads “Captain Phil Harris loses his battle for life while the boats – unaware of the news – battle the biggest storm of the season. Eventually, eldest son Josh breaks the news to the fleet and reactions are intense and unforgettable.”

Derrick Ray, the relief skipper for Phil also had the difficult responsibility of telling the news. Our crew is close, both Freddie and Steve have fished for Phil for too many years to count. The guys on the boat aren’t just deckhands – they are more like family. If you watched “After the Catch” last week, you got a chance to see Freddie and how much he cared for Phil. Also, in the Cornelia Marie family is Todd Stanley. Todd was Phil’s cameraman in the wheelhouse for three years and became one of his closest friends. Recently, Todd talked about his relationship with Phil on the radio (KNCI). Here is an excerpt from that interview.

[Pat] I remember you telling me that, that, um, you’d never had anybody close to you die before?

[Todd] Not like that. I haven’t ever spent that many days in a row with somebody, you know. So, uh… Phil just… you know, he and I were real good friends. I mean, he’s the kind of friend that would call me at 3:00 a.m.… (in Capt. Phil’s voice) “What’re you doin?”
“What do you mean, what am I doin? I’m sleeping.”
(Phil’s voice) “Oh, man. I’m watching this coin show and I just bought some gold coins.  You won’t believe it, these things are amazing.”

Wow. (Pat continues laughter) So, you know, I mean, we were close, you know. One of the things, you know, not too many people, probably really nobody even knows about, is that, uh, Phil, about an hour before he passed away… he gave me, uh, he gave me his gold ring. It’s got a diamond and a couple of rubies in it. These crabbers, you know, they all have… They all wear some kind of bling, whether it’s a golden, diamond-encrusted king crab on a necklace or something. But he bought this, this was the first piece of jewelry he bought as a teenager, as a young crab fisherman, you know. Something, you know, I tried to give back to the boys, and Josh wouldn’t, wouldn’t take it. But that… you know, I wear it proudly on my hand today, and I… it reminds me of him every single day.

Todd also goes on to talk about some behind the scenes moments such as the arguments between Josh and Jake.  For the full transcript, go here.

To say that the rest of the fleets’ is “intense and unforgettable” is the understatement of the year! Even my husband was in tears!! Please pass our thanks on to Todd Stanley for helping the rest of us in getting to know the captain & crew of the Cornelia Marie.

Everything I’m about to say or want to say has already been said…but I will say that when the Deadliest Catch previews first aired, I thought “Great, another stupid reality show”, however, little did I know how caught up in the story I would be – real men working for a living and being recognized for it. Then, as episodes flew by, I realized that these guys were like my closest buddies and family.

True to reality, death had a hand to play and we are now without Capt. Phil…I went through some Kleenex as myself and half of America said “goodbye” to one of the most charismatic and down-to-earth people to ever be seen on TV. Unlike Hollywood, Phil was someone we could all relate to. Someone we all could see in a father, a brother, an uncle, a cousin…Next to the plastic characters and fake personas we see on TV everyday, Phil was a beacon in the dark and now it seems the world is that much more dim without him in it.

When I sometimes feel like the human race is at its lowest level, someone steps forward and raises it up a notch – that someone was Cpt. Phil Harris.

What a great show last night. I loved the tribute show for Phil. Again, can’t say it enough how much i love this show, these guys, the whole thing. I am a woman, who if you met me would think, holy sh** – typical, shopper, girly stuff, etc., when people found out that i watched the show, co-workers, etc., they were like really-and i was like-you need to watch it-and i turned so many people on to that show-but my husband turned me on to this like i have posted before when it was a promotional show – and i too like an earlier post-oh another reality show-but i was hooked (no pun intended) to this show about these hard-working, fun-loving guys. I love them all-i miss Phil-can’t say i knew him personally, i definately could have hung out with him, but loved watching him and the other crews every week. I find it hard to believe that people really enjoy watching fake people looking for fame and fortune hooking up with 20 bachelors/bachlorettes that people find that entertaining? or watching snooty teeney boppers shopping enjoyable? This is a real-life job, that they manage to let us in on where it is both dangerous and yet they are able to hold us captivated and entertained while doing their thing…no other show (reality) on the air in my opinion compares…love it, don’t ever end.

What an eloquent and respectful way to show the passing of Capt. Phil; the sea raging and the other captains battling to stay alive and capt. Phil passes away after a battle of his own. I sat in my chair crying thinking another loss of a great human being. He caught my heart with his personality and his ever present devotion to his sons. There are kings and queens and presidents but they will NEVER come up to the level of a true salt of the earth man. I will never forget you Capt. Phil and may your boys find their way through this sad time. I will be waiting for the Cornelia Marie to sail again.

phil is the reason I first started watching Deadliest Catch. I come from a long and distinguished line of yellin’ screamin’ moms and dads. In fact when my kids were teens, they’d make me so mad that i’d literally jump up and down.

Anyway, my son was going off to the ER for an emergency operation and he said to me “mom, I know you aren’t going to sleep, so you need to watch this show called deadliest catch. It has this captain on it who yelles louder then you. Guess what he loves his sons as much s you do too.” So I turned it on and was swept away, no pun, to alaska. I’ve been going back ever since.

It was so nice to see more of phil’s family on last night’s tribute show. His dad seemed like such a humble and nice man. It is hard when a parent outlives their child. I just wanted to hug him.

Phil was a true individual. There are lots of folks who try so hard to be unique but they have to be that way in the same manner as all the other individual herd followers. Phil was proud to be himself and accepted himself as he was. That is a great trait to have.

I posted on this site before about my feelings about Captain Phil, his familly and fellow fishermen. I think all of us feel the same way. Grief for Phil not being hear, great concern in regards to Phil’s family and friends. I greatly enjoyed the DC episode last night and the tribute. I think Phil would have approved. We got to see Phil’s funeral, his family and friends saying farwell. We also got to see his sea family saying goodbye…the Northwestern standing tribute as they went past the Cornelia, the Time Bandit shooting off fireworks, the Wizard ringing the bell and leaving a pot for Phil. I think back to Sig’s comments on the sea gull. I think Phil may have been there for the funeral and at each ship throughout the fleet, looking over all those he considered family. That’s what all of them are family. When ever anyone was in trouble, they were right there to help if they could. I want to again thank you and Phil’s family and friends for letting us in and allowing us to grieve with all of you. I think most of us fans would have understood if you wanted to keep things private. I hope you all will be able to look back on Phil’s life and smile. Phil will always watch over all of you. He’ll be there every cycle ride, every time you see a bird house, every time the sun shines on the water, every time a pot comes up full. That will be Phil.

Sadness for a time, because of his passing, but laughter in remembering him, and his GUSTO for life!!…RIP Cap’n!!

It’s hard for me to type when my fingers shake, and my eye’s our filled up with water. Being a founder of a paranormal organization, makes me certain that Phil’s spirit will never die. I have read all of the comments from this page and each time I read one I cry even more. My keyboard is yelling out “mayday” because of all the water it has taken on. Seeing Phil’s sons carry on through this gives me strength for when I lose my parents. I will continue to watch the show as long as it airs. I know that all eyes will be on the Cornelia Marie and the rest of the fleet from Dutch Harbor. I am a male that is 33 years old and is from Cincinnati, Ohio. If there was ever anything I could do to help the crew over there out, I wouldn’t hesitate to do so. Being the founder of Spiritual H.O.P.E Society and a Researcher for the paranormal field for over 10 years I have this to say to the fleet: “You sail on waters that spirits control and when you call on them for help they will be there to guide you and protect each and every one of you in your time of need”. I am privileged to have the opportunity to see Phil and the rest of the brave soldiers that fish The Bering Sea of Alaska. I hope that your dad turns up, Jake Anderson. I have never seen another man my age go through such hard times as you have. You have a heart of a lion and you are a great man, and my favorite. I know your sister will guide your dad through the light. No matter if it’s the after life, or the light from a flashlight that searches for him in the woods. I hope you read this and I hope you all keep safe. Thank you all for being a part of my life and I thank you all for putting your lives on the line every day and night just so we can have the best crab in the world on our plates. My heart beats strong for all of you at sea.

This show is more than a show, it has
    The story
    The music
    The filming
    The people
    The editing
    The mood
    The emotion
    The icy cold
    The tears
    The pain
    The vomiting
    The humor
    The balance
    The conflict
It used to be hard for me to watch because I am afraid of the ocean waves, and I always feared someone would die on the show from the power of the ocean. Somehow I got past that and very quickly the show caught my heart and just as it did, I watched as Phil slipped away and it literally broke my heart. These men are men. Good men. And these good men wore their heart on their sleeves and cried out when they lost their good friend. Praying for you all to have peace and to remember Phil in the good times…..from what I’ve seen, I’m sure there are plenty of those to dwell in. God Bless. Debbie (a new fan)

My first time seeing Deadliest Catch was about 4 years ago. Discovery was running a marathon of previously aired episodes. I happened to catch the end of the second one they had on that day and 7 hours later I was still sitting in front of the TV. My husband came into the room to see why I had been glued to the TV all day and started cracking up at the fact that I was watching crab fishing. I remember saying “I know it sounds crazy but this show is incredible” I had recorded all the episodes I had watched on our DVR and made him check the first one out. 7 hours later I woke up to him still watching and laughed my ass off. We have both been hooked ever since. Capt. Phil had always been my favorite (though I love them ALL) because he reminded me of my dad. I have never cried this much over the passing of someone I have never met. It just sucks!!!! The world needs more of the kind of men we have all gotten to know by watching Deadliest Catch.

Six years ago, the world got to meet Captain Phil Harris on the Deadliest Catch. To say he was a character is an understatement. Andy Hilstrand described Phil the best way anyone could when he said “whatever the “IT” factor is… Phil had it”.

Listening to Todd speak of his final days, Phil knew he was slipping away. In what is normally a very private moment, Phil wanted Todd to get the whole story to share with everyone. Phil said you need a beginning, a middle and an end, otherwise you don’t have a story. How right he was.

It was also ironic (and makes you wonder) how the Bering Sea began having an extremely severe storm as Phil was dying. It was like the sea was calling one it’s own home. And when he did pass away, it settled back down and was calm for ten days.

Phil’s made his mark in the fishing industry long before we knew of him. We got to know him from the Deadliest Catch and although most of us never actually met the guy, most of us cried when he passed away… my wife and I included. He was one of a kind!

A great man has passed and can never be replaced. Like so many others I only knew of him via the TV series but it was evident from the special about Phil that he was a very special individual. I want to thank the production company and Discovery for how they handled documenting Phil’s struggles and passing. This has to be the most tasteful and well handled situation of its kind in television. Todd and the crew deserved an Emmy for this, shame on the group for not rewarding them. I think what struck me the hardest was Todd going back to the boat to grieve with the crew, to be there with his family of friends. As for the Bering sea going from storm to dead calm I cannot help but believe that was tied to Phil. I hope the CM and Todd are back next year.

The episode where Captain Phil passes away has just been shown in the UK. Even though from the previews we all knew it was coming, it was one of the saddest moments on TV I have ever seen. The courage that these crab fishermen show in the face of such extreme adversity is very humbling for the rest of us mere mortals. Captain Phil wore his heart on his sleeve and to see him have to cope with hearing about his sons addiction so close to his death was very moving. I don’t normally bother to comment on Things like this but felt that the show had brought my wife and I so much enjoyment, I had to extend my condolences to Phil’s boys. He was a big man in every sense, you should be proud of what he meant to you both.
