Josh sets the record straight about Jake

Capt. Phil and his boys

I read the comments left on this website and on our Facebook page. Everyone was surprised, if not shocked at the revelation that occurred near the end of the last episode of the “Deadliest Catch”. Personally, I did not expect that scene between Capt. Phil and his son Jake. It was very hard to watch… very uncomfortable at best.  As it turns out, Jake’s brother Josh was also surprised when watching last night.

In an interview with AOL, Josh states, “Actually, my dad kept that little part [Jake's pill stealing] from me, so I didn’t know. Discovery hasn’t shown me the footage they’re using. I got a heads-up that it happened, but my dad never informed me about this little situation that took place, so last night was the first time I got to see it. It’s always a shock. Everyone’s got their trials and tribulations.”

Many of you have questions about how Jake is doing today. Currently, he’s in Alaska salmon fishing which is what he normally does this time of year. But, I’ll let Josh tell you about his family in his own words. Please click here to read the full interview from AOL. The F/V Cornelia Marie just finished Herring tendering and is now getting ready to go Salmon tendering. I will update more about the boat later.

    Ive loved following you guys since season 1 of the show and although Ive never meet Phil or any of you guy I feel like I know you and I cried my eyes out when I heard Phil had past and my heart goes out to you guys.I thought it was a bit tacky for the producers to air that incident with Jake and the pills but with that said,Jake i really know exactly what your going through buddy,I had the exact same problem with opiate based pain killers.I knew exactly what you meant when you said “I never thought Id be an addict but here I am” Brother I know all too well.But the good news is you can beat it and you dont have to go through the nasty withdrawls.I went on a perscription called suboxone and was able to get off that within a few months.Ive been married 13 years and have 3 boys of my own so I was very disapointed in myself but Ive put it behind me and Ill be praying and thinking about you and your family.Good luck brother,I truly wish yall the best.

    That type of life is tough. But not everyone goes to drugs. Someone took that kid down the wrong path. Where are they now to back him up? Tough times you go back to family cause they will stick by you. Well Except for my sister who took al the money from the folks estate, but who holds a grude.

    As avid viewers of the show, Deadliest Catch my wife and I would like to pass along our condolences and prayers for Captain Phil and his Family.
    To live, work and play in their chosen arena brings new meaning to the phrase outside looking in.
    Every week we watch and I know some of us imagine ourselves working in their work enviroment. Others tend to scratch their heads and wonder why anybody would want to do what they do for a living.
    Only those Captains and their crews know and it isn`t our place to question it. It is but our place to admire them for their dedication and courage.
    We have become soft as a nation and are far to quick to point fingers at each other when things go wrong.
    I`m sure Captain Phil never questioned why nor did he ever regret his choices.
    I hope his Sons have the courage and fortitude to continue his Fathers leagacy on the Cornelia Marie or any endeavor that they may choose.
    May God give them strength.
    Calms Seas and Safe Harbors Always.
    Just some comments and thoughts from a lost Hawiian in central Florida.
    Aloha,

    As a former addict myself, I felt the episode with Jake and Capt Phil was uncalled for. I believe taping a reality show is one thing. But something as powerful as that needed to be kept between father & son. But with all things said..reading that Discovery stepped up and helped Jake with rehab was a bright side to something that should have been kept private. I was an addict for years and I swear, watching the show, I had no idea Jake was going through that kind of hell. So by showing it like that was “way over the top.” I’ll be praying for Jake. God Bless you Josh & Jake. RIP Capt Phil.

    Even though I know the outcome these past few weeks of Deadliest Catch have left me in tears. Jakes addiction shocked me, but I thought that Phil did a great job, he offered to go with Jake to get help….what a dad and a man :-)I am so very proud of Josh for the mature way he handled all that happend with his dad and all the media attention afterward. He has really stepped up to the plate, I think Phil would be proud. Jake has his dad’s blood running through those veins so he will make it. It appears that Harris’ are nothing if not survivors and troopers and “real men”. Take care to all the Cornelia Maria crew!

    You will be missed, Phil. We will miss your sense of humor, your laughter, your sarcasm and wit, your gravely voice and salty comments. We will miss the banter between you and your crew. You lived hard and played hard. May God bless you and keep you.

    FAREWELL

    Tie the strings to my life, my Lord,
    Then I am ready to go!
    Just a look at the horses –
    Rapid! That will do!

    Put me in on the firmest side,
    So I shall never fall;
    For we must ride to the Judgment,
    And it’s partly down hill.

    But never I mind the bridges,
    And never I mind the sea;
    Held fast in everlasting race
    By my own choice and thee.

    Goodbye to the life I used to live,
    And the world I used to know;
    And kiss the hills for me, just once;
    Now I am ready to go!

    Rest in Peace, Capt Phil

    I grew up in a fishing port and have always loved your show and the fact that you allowed us into your lives. I was so amazed how openly your father told you he loved you on television knowing people were watching. No matter how tough he tried to be he wouldn’t let that stop him from telling you how much he loved you and how proud he was of you. God bless you, Jake and Josh. You are your father’s legacy, how you live your life will be a reflection of all the love your father gave you. Use it wisely and continue to make him and all of America proud.

    When my husband first asked me the watch this show called the deadiest catch, I was not thrilled to say the least, but after watching that one show I was hooked. I want to say thanks to all the captains and crews for letting million of people share in the journey with them. I sure that being a fisherman is tough, but opening your lives up for millions of people to see has to be tough also. I have laughed, got pissed, an even cried right along with you guys. I was so sad when I learned the news of Capt. Phill. He was by far my all time favorite. I loved to hear is words of wisdom. Cause he was just so blunt an true to himself. May the Lord be with his boys and loved ones, and help them with their loss. May God bless all the Captains and crews. I look forward to watching the rest of this season and seeing what’s in store for next season.

Today is the two year mark since I lost my dad at 54 years old and I continue to watch every Tuesday and wish my dad was here with me. My dad had battle drug addiction most of his life and at the end was able to bet it. Jake I wish you all the best with your recovery. I am so sorry for your loss and I hope the boys are able to keep the boat. I look forward to many more seasons of Deadlist Catch with Cornelia Maria on the show. Thank you Discovery Chanel for giving us the opportunity to be apart of the lives of the greatest fisherman.

    I could have sworn that on Monday July 12 The Tonight Show, that I heard Josh Harris say that they still needed 2 million to do something with the Cornelia Marie. My ears could have deceived me at that time of the night. If this is true, 1. What are they trying to do? and 2. If all the fans sent in $1.00 I bet it would add up real fast. Just a thought. What do you all know/think????? Josh/Jake chime in ding & dong :-)

    I hope and would encourage the owners of the Cornelia Marie to train Josh and/or Jake to take the helm of the Cornelia Marie. If either of these men are mature enough to assume this position it would be good for the crew and good for “the boys” as well. However, that being said, it all comes down to business. If the boat owners are not confident that these men can bring in the crab they must go with someone who can fill the boat. Loyalty is nice but it doesn’t pay the bills. Don’t entrust the safety of the crew to someone who is not ready simply for TV ratings.

    I thought that Phil and Cornelia were co-owners? Obviously Jake and Josh are not seasoned enough to be captains, or atleast I dont think they are?? I am sure that they will not do anything that would put the lives of the crew in danger for some ratings. Obviously all involved understand that the Bering Sea is a brutal, unforgiving foe and not just anyone can captain a boat in those seas with the waves, rogue waves, and winds blowing and hurcanes etc.

    I lost my dad in 1984 when I was 15. He was at home dealing with cancer. My fondest memory is when he took me to see Footloose. I knew he hated it bacause he was a John Wayne western and army movie kind of guy. When it was over I asked him if he liked it and he said as long as I like it, it was fine. I mean I have pictures and memories just like Jake and Josh do, but thanks to some crazy guy in an office at Discovery who decided to go out and film crab fishers they forever have their dad on video so that their kids(when they have them)can see what kind of guy there grandpa was. How cool is that? Again many prayers and much love got out to Jake and Josh and the entire crew and fleet. This was an unexpected loss, and a big one too. Take care.

    I was listening to the radio today, there was a story running about the people that spend winter in Antatica and the unbreakable bond they form through dealing adversity.
    The lady was saying that those that havent done it would never understand how strong that bond is, having watched Deadliest Catch i have come as close as im going to get to understanding that bond.
    Phil seemed to be the wise old man of the sea, that had seen it all and had the respect of all the Captains and crews and from what we saw of him it was quite clear why.
    RIP Phil you were a Dude that im sure will be missed by many.

    I didn’t start watching Deadliest Catch until 3 years ago. When I saw that the Cornelia Marie was out of Kodiak, a place I lived for two years, I was hooked and never missed an episode. I didn’t realize how popular Capt. Phil was until his death. I thought I was the only old lady that had a secret crush on him.
    I hate the thought of Phil just disappearing from the show. There is the picture of the captains on the bluff and the camera goes in for a close-up of Phil’s eye and there is a crew on a boat. I have a vision of Phil somewhere watching over his fellow crab fishermen. I think this would be a fitting tribute to the memory of Captain Phil Harris.

    I join many others in offering “the boys” and the crew my condolences after Phil’s death. I’ve been a fan of the show since the first season, and grew to have a special affection for Phil, Josh, & Jake…possibly because I’m also the mother of two sons and the survivor of a very difficult divorce. Anybody who has a family member with substance abuse problems can relate to Phil’s anger,sadness, and frustration upon learning that Jake had been stealing pain pills from his dad…
    What a year. As the boys recover from Jake’s addiction to opiates, Phil’s death, and the uncertainty for the Cornelia Marie, I hope they realize that they are in many peoples’ thoughts and prayers. As someone on last night’s tribute show said (forgive my paraphrasing) “Those boys are Seattle’s boys. They’re our boys now.”
    Be well. Be strong. Take care of each other.

    Phil, Rest in Peace, your legacy is going to live on in your name. You’ve taught your boys how to be men. They will follow through.
    Jake: Way to “Man Up” and own up to something that will kill you if you don’t take action. America is proud of you, don’t stop, when you need someone to lean on the Ole Man is watching you and is there for you forever.
    Josh: You made your father proud, and as a father I could understand you wanted to do “Right” by your dad. You and Jake have a long road, I know what it’s like to lose your Dad as mine passed away the day before my birthday when he was in his late 50′s.

    Time will help heal all wounds. Do Phil proud and ask God for help in “Life’s Choices”.

    All families have secrets, not to be confused with good parenting, Phil was a superb father to both of his boys!, it’s a shock when a person finds out about things, it can lead to anger, guilt, a lot of different emotions, my only wish is the Discovery channel doesn’t let too many cats out of the bag, some things are better left alone, and by not doing so can drive a wedge inbetween good people who are strugling with life, let alone a hard situation to be trown in, with many sides of the story. so far the DC has handeled the situation with empathy and kindness, and I want to see it continue as such. these are all such good men, with good hearts. Some things we the public just don’t need to know! and as part of the public I am content in not knowing the inner most secrets of a family, and I respect that privacy. Ratings are not worth the silent destruction of a family. Just my humble opinion as a dedicated fan of the DC!

    I met most of the Crabbers on DC back in Dutch Harbor in the late 90′s at the Unisea Inn and The Elbow Room, where I had played, & worked in Unalaska as well, while there and threw down a few duck farts with your dad as well.. I feel your pain Jake/Josh, I lost my dad last year. It doesn’t get any better, just gets easier as time goes by.
    You guys were pretty young back then. Stay safe and I hope everything works out for you.

    A rephrase: “Some of the crabbers” on DC, lol. Some now, were on different vessels than they’re on now. Back then there were a ton of wannabe crabbers, mostly greenhorns who didn’t last and left town. I remember the tal and the alcohol making them sound like real long time crabbers…..A week or so into the season, there they’d be, walking down the dock without a job!
    Way to go, Discovery Channel for letting the world see the real world of Crabbing as it really is.
    RIP Capt. Phil!

    Jake,
    Condolences on the loss of your dad-lost mine to esophageal cancer-probably from his smoking too. I smoked 2 packs a day for 10 years-finally gave it up. You are dead nuts right on-you weren’t born with the thing in your mouth-just relax and skip the next one…

    Good luck with the business and fishing-you guys are tops in my book and we are all pulling for you to make a success of it-and you can bet you’ve got your old man watching out from above.

    God Bless you boys…I am your Dad’s age and have lived a similar life (outside of fishing). He truely lived his life and thats what I’m doing. If you spend your life thinking about dieing you’ll die bored.
    May you find happiness in whatever path you take and may the paths be filled with excitement. It’s all up to you…griff

    My heart went out to you boys and the rest of the fleet when I saw the last episode. Phil seems alot like me dad who has had heart problems for the last 17 years. I’m really glad to hear that you guys are staying on the boat and taking over eventually the business. Looking forward to seeing you all next season!!
