Fishermen’s Festival honors Capt. Phil

In the video above, Capt. Jim Wilson talks about being stuck in St. Paul with Capt. Phil and the Cornelia Marie this year while crab fishing. Jim was on of the guys Phil wanted to take his place when he had his stroke in February. Jim is currently the skipper of the F/V Cornelia Marie while our boat finishes its salmon tendering contract in Alaska. This video features Phil’s good friends telling stories about him and was made specifically to raise money for the “Commercial Fishermen’s Festival”.

I recently watched the short tribute DVD honoring Captain Phil Harris.  Besides the round table discussion, it also includes exclusive photos of Phil’s memorial and other pics submitted by his friends and family.  The DVD does not compare to the tribute show produced by Discovery Channel, but the DVD sales go toward a good cause.  Josh  told Johnathan  and Harry Lewis that he really enjoyed the tribute honoring his dad.  If you donate $20 to the festival, you will receive a copy of the DVD – check out the online store.

The “Commercial Fishermen’s Festival” takes place in Astoria, Oregon on September 18-19, 2010. Astoria is a working fishing community and the home of many Alaska fishermen. The mission of the festival is to help commercial fishermen – from educating the public about the industry to educating themselves so they can save lives. The guys behind the festival and on the board are friends of Capt. Phil. In fact, Phil was scheduled to attend.

The festival organizers decided to rename their signature competition to the “Captain Phil Harris Highliner Competition”. I plan on attending with my family as well as (hopefully) Josh and Jake.  Johnathan, Andy (and maybe Keith and Sig) are also going to be there. There’s a great write-up of the event on the F/V Time Bandit’s website. I guess you can even win a ride with Johnathan on the “Time Bandit Harley”.   The organizers are adding more cool events, so check back with their website for updates.  If you’re a Deadliest Catch fan, I’m guessing you’ll have a great time.

what a cool video!, we never got to see the rest of the story when he was dry docked at st.paul… the school kids was a hoot!, and be dam’n any one would ever walk across the street to avoid any of you fine all american workers! and his rolladex!!!!! another hoot, he was a magnatic man, with lots of unusual (to us) as friends, we’re all hard workers! just some walk the line of danger where others would never tread, it’s amazing! the thrill of the hunt, the chase, the $ involved both after the catch and to keep up with the catch, you folks were idols long before the show ever was a glint in some directors eyeball! (i love CRAB)…wish you folks could do an event closer to my home, I would love to meet and greet, but there is a side of me that you guys need privacy too, would love to have a memento, but on workers comp it’s only a dream to get to the coast, and boy do I miss the smell of the ocean, well guys keep up the good work, catch lots of those elusive yummy creatures! “wheres the butter” take care, god speed, and for heavens sake be careful ( as much as you can out there) all my best to all

some year I’m planning to go. It looks so interesting from the website. Loved the video Morgan. That’s a memmory those kids will always have too. So many things I remember from that age that encouraged me to go forward try hard and learn. My seccond and third grade teacher, same wonderful lady, had a maxim I still use today “hey, y’all learnin just doesn’t take place in this room. It’s a gorgeous day. Let’s go study nature!!!” So we’d take a hike pick flowers, she’d tell us all about htem, and listen for birds and stuff like that. She’d have had us in line for the CM if we lived there.

I would give my right arm to be there to see our new extended family thanks to Discovery Channel. I have watched tonight “Endless” 5 times now and was so happy to see Josh return to finish out the season with the crew and Jake arrive in Palm Springs (only 2 1/2 hrs) away from us here in Mesa, AZ so close but still so far away, he really looks GREAT and happy with getting clean. I hope the family the best and our new dad Capt. Phil will always have a special place in our hearts. Josh and Jake should you ever deside to come to Phoenix, AZ I would do anything to meet you both and give you a big hug for being so strong and there for each other.

My husband and son are both deployed to different wars and its just me and the teen daughter at home in Alaska. Deadliest Catch is our families favorite show. Often my husband would say, “I don’t know how they do it.” Or “I’d rather go to war (again) than do that crazy sh*t!” Maybe I can sweet talk my hubby into letting me fly down for this event (without him as he’d definitely want to go if he was home)?! It’s for a great cause, and hardworking folks. If I got at least one autograph for him maybe he wouldn’t mind?! What are the odds of that happening though? These poor guys are swamped like rock stars, I’m the last thing they want to deal with. God bless them they sure have a lot on their plates. Especially this year. R.I.P. Captain Phil, you were a loving father, friend, and boss. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

Love this show! All the boats have a special place in my heart, due to the fact each one has atleast 2 family members on it. I have worked for my dad since I was 15, so I definitely connect with the Cornelia Marie. Sometimes the job sucks, but at the end of the day you can’t replace the time you were able to spend with your dad. And like viewer from Mesa, if Josh or Jake want there is someone here in Lake Havasu who would love to meet them.

    **Keep your shoulders back,
    & Your chin out.**
Capt. Phil had actually given the boys previous awareness. At times we feel that a person will be around for a long time & we have the leisure of putting things off. Capt. Phil would have very so much wanted both or either one to step up, step forward, and take the wheel by the throttle and learn this business/boat. It’s not too late, you still can! Or if this isn’t your cup of tea then by golly do something! Do it with full steam & enthusiasm! And be good at it! Never stop trying! That is the only way we learn. Capt. Phil had assertivness, he was direct with drive & passion as well as compassion.

Josh, you are more like him in the business sense, Jake are like him as you know the ropes the mechanics of it. Both of you two together can teach each other. And become the best darn team in the Bering Sea. First, you both have to listen, back each other up and see the long range goal.
I wish you all the best. Captain Phil Harris we loved you and you will be missed. R.I.P.

As a retired trucker, I found alot in common with Capt. Phil. My ocean was an asphalt highway but we both still had our problems and adversities. He, his boys and the Cornelia Marie will always be here in my heart and he shall be sadly missed. I pray that his sons can work together and carry on in his honor. RIP my friend, rest in peace. :)
