Farewell to our Capt. Phil

Josh Harris and Johnathan Hillstrand (LA Times)

Tonight we say “farewell” to our skipper, Capt. Phil Harris of the F/V Cornelia Marie.  I expect Discovery will use great sensitivity in telling the story of Phil’s last hours.

I guess in one respect we’re all in the same boat together.  We all have similar feelings in regard to tonight episode of “Deadliest Catch”.  My Mom and even Josh don’t really know what to expect on the show.

However, Josh and Johnathan were on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” last night and provided an idea of what is to come.  During their segment of the interview, they did show a very emotional clip of the show.  I guess this gives us some idea of what to expect.  Also, before the Tonight Show, they spoke to a reporter from the LA Times:

Josh Harris, in Los Angeles this week for an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” hasn’t watched Tuesday’s episode yet but says he will because he wants to make sure he said a proper goodbye. He was in shock during those last few days, he said, and doesn’t remember details that he now considers vitally important.

“It was hard to live it, and it’ll be really hard to relive it,” he said, lighting a steady stream of cigarettes on the rooftop of a Hollywood hotel. (He’s promised to kick the habit soon, but he’s too shellshocked at the moment, both from the death and the media attention now swirling around him). “I want to see those final moments of my father.”

Johnathan Hillstrand, co-captain of the Time Bandit and a close family friend in town with Harris for “The Tonight Show,” was at Harris’ bedside up to the end and said he hasn’t decided if he’ll watch the episode.

Josh is flying back from L.A. today and will watch the show here in Seattle.  According to Johnathan’s twitter account he made a decision and will “be watching Deadliest Catch tonight”.  Johnathan’s a great guy and has been a true friend to the Cornelia Marie family.  Thank you Johnathan for all of your support.

Discovery Channel has set up a platform for Live chatting during the show here.  Of course, we’ve always had the ability for real strong supporters of the Cornelia Marie to chat live at http://www.deadliestcatchfan.com - just scroll down to the bottom of the home page.  I do hope they edit carefully and provide honor and justice to a good man.

Morgan, thank you for sharing with us.
I think the boys are doing a great job of stepping up. It is good to see that they want to continue on fishing and following Phil’s footsteps.

It was very hard to watch the show tonight. I thought Discovery did a good job and how they handled everything.

I was wondering though why the Cornelia Marie would be in dry-dock next year?
Josh mentioned this on After the Catch. I missed part of it, so wasn’t sure why?

I just finished watching tonight’s episodes for the second time. As I wrote on the unofficial fan site, I too lost my father to a stroke. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 56. He had cancer, but the day before he died, he suffered a massive stroke. I was 23 at the time. Some days it feels like that was a lifetime ago, and others it feels like it was only yesterday. I will be praying for the familiy. I would just like Jake and Josh to know that while the hurt and sadness never goes away fully, it does get easier to deal with. Phil was and always will be one of my favorite captains on the Deadliest Catch. He will be greatly missed and always in our hearts.

I’ve enjoyed this show for the past 6 seasons. I was even able to meet Phil once in an event in Albany, OR and this will remain one of my favorite memories. His passing was more difficult than I imagined as he wasn’t just a ‘character’ but grew to be more than that. He will be missed and I can only pray that he is with God now- probably riding a Harley.

It feels odd to post a memorial to someone I’ve never met. However after watching him on television for years, seeing him respond to pressure, success and how he interacts with family and friends, it seems to me that the world has lost one of the “good people”. This is not a title I hand out lightly. Seeing the response from both friends and family that knew him well as well as thousands of people that only knew him through his being on television confirms this. Everyone seems to have the same opinion of him; a no b.s., straight shooting kind of guy. Someone who you always know right where you stand with. The very essence of “good people”. The world is a lesser place to have lost him; the multitude of fans who knew him only from his weekly visits via their televisions, but especially those who knew him personally. To his sons, I can only say, proudly carry on his legacy. Be proud of all he accomplished and all that he has enabled you to accomplish.
    R.I.P. Captain Phil Harris

My heart goes out to Captain Phil Harris’s family and friends. I have watched and enjoyed Deadlist Catch since it first aired and my respect and admiration for Captain Harris is of the highest regard. I found him to be funny, fair and one that any of his crew could go to. Captain Harris was and will remain my favorite person on the show. He was a man’s man and bigger than life with a laugh and wit to match. You will be missed by all. Sweet dreams dear Prince.

Farewell, Phil. You reminded me of my father in so many ways. He, too, died at a young age (50) from complications of smoking, which is what ultimately brought me to Alaska.

Good luck Jake and Josh. I’ve never met either of you, but it feels like I know ya’!

On a side-note, Phil’s doctor in Anchorage is my neurologist. Brilliant guy!

Last night’s episode was very hard to watch. Not only did Phil always have a healthy following, I think a lot of people relate to what happened and also think of their own loved ones.

I felt Discovery did a very tasteful job with something so delicate as the loss of someone’s life. Watching After the Catch made me feel confident that Josh and Jake will be okay.

I’m sure this hasn’t been easy for your family, either Morgan. I appreciate all the updates and work done on this site and the Deadliest Catch Fan website.

My continued thoughts and prayers to everyone involved.

RIP Phil Harris, May heaven be filled with crab to fill your pots and lots of road to ride that Harley on.

There is something about a person with such a unique personality that touches the hearts of millions of people…he was the kind of person we wanted to know…the kind of person we who added spice to our own existences just by being there and being himself.

That is what makes his loss so difficult, even for those like me, who only felt we knew Phil from sitting in front of a flickering tv screen.

There is a place in the afterworld for people like Phil, and now his spirit is free. And guys, you know that he will be watching over you and guiding you in your lives until you meet again someday. Look for signs…you will know he is there from time to time.

For now I wish for you peaceful thoughts and sustained memories. Live as he would have wanted you to, and you will find he will be there with you in spirit.

There is no doubt that everyone will miss Captain Phil. But I would like to take the high road and express what he and the rest of all the crews really mean to us out here in TV land. Since this show started, I think that we all have grown to each become a part of this because it is the most realistic show on Television. You make a real living doing the most dangerous job even though alot of people do not know about how their nice plate of crablegs got there. Since what we eat comes from what you do, it makes it more personal now because we can see the work and effort put into every crab you catch. More important than that–we can know your name–see you at work–feel your pain–feel the excitement and also mourn with you when something like this happens. Because you have not changed your life for the cameras, it really hits home to all of us who would now consider you a friend. You are also like the last cowboy hero because you are in constant battle with the most powerful force on earth. WATER Guys–you have captured the hearts of millions and inspired people to maybe come out of their comfort zone in order to get things done. Captain Phil was first class all the way and showed us how real it can be. GOD SPEED CAPTAIN PHIL and bless the family as well as all the crews who have earned our respect on “The Deadliest Catch “

I know the anguish the boys are going through. My kids father died 11/28/08 of a combination of stroke/3 heart attacks in 3 weeks. He was 36 years old. My daughters were 9 months and 1 1/2 when he died. Its getting especially hard now as they ask where their daddy is but they are 2 and 3 now. The 3 year old know her daddy is her angel in heaven and thats what we tell the 2 year old too. My heart goes out to Jake and Josh and the rest of the Deadliest Catch Skippers who all had the privilege of calling Capt. Phil their friend.

I was slightly disappointed in last night’s episode for a few reasons…..
    1. There was way to much of the Kodiak on there. I don’t particularly care for the boat. The Captain is ok but I can do without seeing that boat.
    2. I wish they would have showed more of Captain Phil!
    3. I really didn’t like how they ended the episode.
With that being said, I have to say that with the small time they focused on Captain Phil, I cried my eyes out. I completely lost it when Phil was apologizing to Josh for not being there as children. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HOW JOSH TOLD HIM NOT TO APOLOGIZE FOR ANYTHING, that he was a GREAT father!!! It almost seemed as if Phil knew that he wasn’t going to make it. He was telling Jake how proud of him he was. They always say people get better for a short time before they die. I am in the medical field and see it in hospice patients frequently. We think they are recovering but there is a small window of being lucid then they pass. I wonder if that’s what we witnessed happening to Phil. I was blown away watching ATC and seeing how much Phil aged in a 3 year span.

My dad died at age 52, I was 19 years old. That’s been 18 years ago now, but the story of Captain Phil has opened up the scars from so long ago. My dad died in almost the exact same way, so watching this happen has really brought me back in time. I pray for you, Josh and Jake, I know the heartache you go through. But know that he will live in your hearts forever, because time WILL ease the pain, but you WILL NEVER forget him. Neither will MILLIONS of people. My dad and mom were singers in the era of Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Dad played the guitar and mom had the voice of Patsy Cline. They lived it up in clubs and bars performing. The night of their big break, dad had a malfumation of blood vessels burst in his brain. He stayed 41 days in the hospital, but recovered and lived another 10 years with us. We finally got to know him in that time, but it wasn’t nearly long enough. Both my parents died from strokes caused from smoking. I congratulate you on trying to quit, and my heart goes out to you. God Bless Captain Phil, I know he is in heaven.

I thought last night’s episode was tastefully done. I must admit that I was sobbing by the time it was over. I lost my Dad 11-7-09 and Phil reminded me of my Dad. Not only were they similar in build, but in what they would say as well. My Dad had a mouth on him that would not quit and he didn’t take much crap from anyone, yet would give you the shirt off his back is you really needed it. Josh and Jacob got to say they loved their Dad before he died. That is so important and I’m sure as time goes by they will be gratefully for that. The last thing I said to my Dad was that I loved him and would talk to him next week.

Josh and Jacob, I will be hard, but you can get through this. You seem to have a great support system, which will be such a great help. I’m so sorry for your Dad’s passing. God Bless, Take Care and Smooth Sailing.

The best legacy Phil could ever leave was for his sons and teaching them – like Josh so eloquently put it – to be men.
It was difficult to get through the programs last night but Discover Channel/Deadliest Catch handled things with class. Phil will never really be gone because he will live forever in our hearts! Fair seas, Phil and a following wind.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge two people who are not on TV and yet are a very intricate part of Phil’s life.

The first is Phil’s ex-wife, the mother of Josh and Jake. Phil did a great job of raising the boys, but so did she in Phil’s absence! It was not an easy job for her, I’m sure. When Phil was out to sea she certainly must have had her hands full being both mother and father.

The second person I would like to acknowledge is Phil’s daughter who we hear nothing about.

Both of these women could be out there capitalizing on their “15 minutes of fame”. They could easily seek their stardom by talking to tabloids or appearing in TV interviews; and yet they have not.

My compliments to them for handling Phil’s passing with class and dignity and for respecting the image we all have of our beloved Capt. Phil.

This was a very hard episode to watch it brought back memories of my Uncle when Cancer was taking his life. I cried just to see Phil the way that he was you can’t help but to get emotionally upset at such a great man getting worse and worse, just like my Uncle did. My heart went out to him and to Josh, when Phil was telling Josh that he was sorry for not being a good father…. I wish that I could have hugged Phil and Josh at the same time.. it is so hard to be strong when someone that you love so much is going through hell and you can’t do anything to help them, but try and comfort them. Josh is doing so well with what has happened, and if he didn’t have his fathers stamina in him it is hard to say what he would do. I really miss Phil and I am hoping for the boys that they get through and continue to keep up the good job that they are both doing,my heart goes out to both of them.

I love watching the Deadliest Catch and watching Captain Phil Harris and the other Captains. The Discovery Channel did a wonderful job on Captain Phil Harris. I two have to agree that they paid too much attention on the Kodiak. jake and Josh my prayer go out to your family. The pain of loosing your father will go away but the memories wont. Keep up the Boat as your father is watching over you and is proud of you both.

YOU CAN SHED TEARS THAT HE IS GONE,OR YOU CAN SMILE BECAUSE HE HAS LIVED.YOU CAN CLOSE YOUR EYES AND PRAY THAT HE’LL COME BACK OR YOU CAN OPEN YOUR EYES AND SEE ALL THAT HE HAS LEFT.
YOUR HEART CAN BE EMPTY BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE HIM OR IT CAN BE FULL OF THE LOVE THAT YOU SHARED.
YOU CAN TURN YOUR BACK ON TOMORROW AND LIVE FOR YESTERDAY OR YOU CAN BE HAPPY FOR TOMORROW BECAUSE OF YESTERDAY,YOU CAN REMEMBER YOUR DAD AND ONLY THAT HE’S GONE,OR YOU CAN CHERISH HIS MEMORY AND LET LIVE ON.
YOU CAN CRY AND CLOSE YOUR MIND,BE EMPTY AND TURN YOUR BACK OR YOU CAN DO WHAT HE’D WHAT. SMILE. OPEN YOUR EYES. LOVE AND GO ON.
GOD BLESS YOU JOSH AND JAKE,

I just wanted to say that I am very sorry for your loss. I just lost my 46 year old brother back in March and I know it is not at all easy dealing with the grief. Specially when your father feels he let you down. I pray you guys continue to move past your grief and continue to make Phil proud of you like he always was! He was a great guy and one of the main reasons I got hooked on the show. He cracked me up and even though I did not personally know him I still can not watch the tribute to him because I know I would cry way to much. You are all in my prayers!
