Deadliest Catch Tonight – “Glory Days”

Nothing but smiles for Capt. Phil and crew when they pull of up pots stuffed with crab!  “That’s got to be a beautiful thing”, says our skipper when viewing the test pot full of Opilios.  Feels good to watch this clip… everyone is having a great time.

I was away from the website this past week with a job in Alaska.  I have much to get caught up on and will make more posts this week.  Meanwhile, we continue to get new items in our store such as these cool tumblers – just in time for summer!

The Cornelia Marie is my favorite of the crab fleet. My question; who was Cornelia Marie? Somebody’s lover? grandmother? an old family friend?

How many more episodes before Phil has his stroke? I know it has to be coming soon and I am honestly dreading watching it and I don’t know if I will be able to.

I am confused about something. On tonights episode, Capt. Phil keeps talking about he won’t be around long, etc.
Later on, the camera man asks Jake how he feels about having to take over when Phil is gone.
Jake then started to cry. What was going on that wasn’t being said?
At the end of King crab season, Phil was upbeat saying he was going to Captain for a long time, ever since Opie season started, Phil has been talking about not being around.
Was Phil really sick before he had his stroke? What happened between King Crab and Opie season to pull him down so much?

A poem for Captain Phil:

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered “come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although many loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the BEST.

It is going to be so hard to watch the upcoming shows :(

To Tanya, that was a very pretty poem and it really described Captain Phil.

To Cecilia, I was wondering the same thing. I got the impression that more was said but the producers cut it out in editing.

My kids and I watch every week. We have noticed that since Opi season started all the Captains have been acting odd.
Jon & Andy usually are so funny and full of life. Since Opi started, they have been real sober and sad like.
Sig is being a butt and acting like he is on drugs or some such thing and taking it out on all.
Phil talking about dying like it is going out of style. Yeah we all got the impression something wasn’t being said or something was going on that is very wrong.

Funny how people just assume things…

@ Jodi-for the Cornelia being your favorite boat in the fleet to not knowing how she got her name is really sad and haven’t you heard of Google? But I’ll just tell you…Cornelia Marie is Morgan’s mom she owns half the boat with Captain Phil.

11. Kelsey said:

Thank you Morgan for sharing with us. I feel for Jake & Josh. Father’s Day is almost here. I know the first one without your Dad is hard to get through!

The Cornelia Marie is our fav on the show and the Harris fellas are our favorites. Everyone on all the boats does seem different somehow. Maybe because we all know the outcome so we all put more emphasis on little stuff. I did wonder why the capt. would talk so much about not being around. Very sad. Miss ya Captain. You were the best.

12. Rose G. said:

It was funny when Freddie at raw fish intestines. I would have thrown it right up.

It was heartbreaking though to hear Capt. Phil talk about passing on. Made me cry knowing what is coming.

13. Nicholas said:

@Gretchen-my family has noticed the same thing- all the captains seem bothered by something since opie season started.

My sons love watching the pranks the Time Bandit pulls, etc. Other than the fireworks at the beginning, Jonathan and Andy have seemed pretty down.

@Cecilia-in an episode a week or two ago Phil mentioned he had been in hospital for his back before opie season. It is possible that the doctors warned him about his health then.

14. Carol Londres said:

Thanks Morgan, although there is a creeping sadness, as we know Captain Phil was ailing and it shows something is coming…hopefully the spirit will come back to this Blog. Tanya, your poem was beautiful; I had read it years ago and not too long ago after losing my husband to prostate cancer. Whoever wrote it, it just speaks volumes.
“Seattle” Heather – on this site, it doesn’t fly to chastize people for not knowing everything in life and never any harm in asking. For me in your reply I’d say, lose the attitude.

I’m so glad you are all discussing the show. The episode last night was very portentous. It was Kind of like life. Happy and sad were all mixed all together.

Remember, that what we eat is culturally based. A lot of stuff we enjoy people in other regions and lands wouldn’t touch. For example, Jamaicans won’t eat our bananas because to them ripe yellow ones are rotten fruits.

It has been my experience that people who are going to get on that one way plane to the eternal club met often have a premonition of their trip. They may not think it consciously but they know. Many medical personnel and hospice volunteers have told me stories. Phil’s picking the rocky mountains underwater to crab was probably one of the trickss of the trade he wanted to teach his sons. Ditto the survival suit swap.

I am visually impaired so was unaware that Jake was crying. Although it is tempting to read more in to this, remember that before opi season, Phil was hospitalized for back issues. Crab fishing is a younng man’s game. He may have been considering quitting because he was in such terrible pain. None of us will ever know for sure.

I just pray that discovery handles future events with sensitivity and gives the man and his family the dignity he-they deserve. Whatever happens, someone will be upset I’m sure. It’s human nature.

morgan, i neglected to say that I have enjoyed this website immensely. You are doing a stellar job of keeping us fans informed.

since your family is intimately involved with the Harris one, I’m sure this hasn’t been an easy adjustment. We all appreciate your sticking with us.

One more thing I forgot to say is this. Remember that this show is dependent on edidting. People have to cull through hours of stuff to find god. therefore any atmosphere that come is out is what that committee or whatever feels will best portray the season’s ambiance.

With Phil’s death, Jake Anderson on the Northwestern’s dad’s disappearance, and maybe other things, this season hasn’t been a laugh riot. In other years, the weather has been the star. this time around it is interactions and emotions. Hope I’m making sense.

Morgan,
Thank you so much for sharing with us every week!

My elderly mother is a huge fan of Captain Phil and the Cornelia Marie. She looks forward to the show, and especially to reading your posts every week, and loves exploring your the website for news and such.

The video of Freddie is hysterical! He must have a stomach made of steel. Not sure if fish guts are a Samoa delicacy or not, but man that took guts!

18. Steve said:

Cecilia,
I caught the same thing.
All I can say is, sometimes you have a premonition. My friend from Deming, WA. said he was never going back up, he had retired. Then he got on the Katmai.
We had a few beers before he left, and he told me he wasn’t sure about his “last” time going up. He actually had retired… we talked about opening an auto restoration shop when he got back but…

I think that is what’s going on with Phil and his family (and your crew is your family too) in these final episodes.
For some strange reason, there’s a sense of knowing.
R.I.P. Phil,
you are among friends.

My guess regarding Capt. Phil is that at the end of king crab season he was happy and thrilled to be back manning the love of his life, but over the break he was informed by medical personnel that he had three crushed discs in his back. The pain and limitation of movement is probably what got him talking about not being able to “do this forever”. I think the pain combined with the reality that he’s not as young as he used to be was making him take an introspective look just as to how much longer his career was going to last. I was quite surprised to hear him admit that he “took every drug known to man” during his life. I would have thought that out of respect to Phil Discovery would have edited out that remark.

By the way, the Kodiak was not featured last night–wonder why?

Ornree: The Kodiak was featured at the end, when the Coast Guard went out to snag a deckhand who was having chest pains. I think its absence prior to then was a combination of a lot of story to tell on the other ships and wanting to build some suspense for that ending.

Ornree, and everyone else too,
I am confused. How would Discovery show disrespect to Phil’s family by leaving that quote in the show? Maybe my moral compass is broken, but his family lived with him. They were aware that Phil had flaws and issues just like you and I. I am almost six months younger than was phil. We both grew up in the late ’70s and early ’80s. I have a pretty good idea of what went down with a lot of folks. Unlike the guys in the heyday of crabfishing I didn’t make tons of money, so I got in less trouble. To me that off hand remark made him more human. It’s a big man who admits things. The fact that he was an excellent compassionate intelligent human being shows the quality of his life and character. Honey bunch, your age is showing. Tuck it in.

hollyt – I didn’t find it disrespectful either. I am Phil’s age and grew up in the 70′s too. Back then, most of us DID do every drug known to man.
Times were a lot different back then.

ornree, I can understand your concern in that young kids might have been watching. However, you are expecting discovery to do the parenting.

Remarks like Phil’s are teachable moments. they open the door for discussion and education. Of course, most parents have other priorities and are happy to put junior or juniorette in front of the plug in drug. Then they can do the real important stuff like shop on ebay or talk to their siber lover on face book. Oh, my cynical side is showing.

Before I shut up, any child young enough to be supposedly harmed by the current remark under discussion, not to mention language blah blah blah, should be in bed. Whoops, now my age is showing. Where is my lpale lavender rinestone studded sweatsuit, or even better my mommy jeans.

Oh sixties survivor who said that every drug known to man and free love are mutually exclusive. Oh I wish I lived back in the day when life was fun in every way. Being a responsible adult, who knows the consequences of stupidity really sucks sometimes.

Totally off the subject of DC; but, oh, how I remember my mother’s reaction the first time I went braless, and on Christmas day no less! Now look what’s on TV today–former presidential candidates talking about their erectile dysfunction! To quote the saying from those cigarette comercials of the 70s, “Oh, we’ve come a long way, Baby.”

(This will be my last comment not related to DC.)

Great info Morgan! Thanks for all the sharing you do – we love reading your column here!
We have been watching since the beginning too. Captain Phil was the BEST captain the crab fleet had!

Maybe I read too much into the Glory Days episode, but like others have mentioned, I too noticed that the captains all seem sad somehow.

After hearing some of the things Captain Phil said, I too was wondering what happened between King Crab and Opie Crab. Captain Phil was so upbeat at the end of King Crab season. Then a few weeks later it was very obvious he seems different.

Heres the deal folks. Capt. Phil was human. He didn’t hide anything or hold anything back. This guy was true blue. Why should his death be different. My heart, and thoughts go put to family and friends of Phil. To a great American, Father, and friend to all of us.
I’m not a die hard fan of the show but always loved to watch Phil. So I’d do research and catch up on the internet. I would compair Phil Harris to John Wayne. Everyone Keep in mind He was and Still is Just Like us, A man doing his job and he worried about his family and friends. We just got a good glimse of his live through the media. I’m turning off now. God bless you Capt. Phil and the rest of The people out there Working for the american dream

I like to be kept in the dark on TV shows like this makes them better to watch.

Jodie ask about the ship. Cornelia Marie was the name of the first owners wife. When they divorced she took the ship and hired phil as Capt. He bought half ownership of the ship.
These are my favrite people. Not actors. Real people doing real things. Hope it keeps going I’d like to see what happens to the boys.
