Deadliest Catch tonight: Capt. Phil and Jake

Phil and Jake, season 2
Tonight’s episode is going to be the beginning of a tough road for all of us. According to Discovery Channel, tonight’s episode entitled “The Darkened Seas” will show on the “Cornelia Marie, the skipper’s son reveals a dark secret.”
According to Thom Beers, the show’s creator, tonight’s episode is a “pivotal installment in the ongoing story of Harris and his two deckhand sons, Jake and Josh.” Beers goes on further to say, “… this show really sets the tone. It’s sets a whole different family dynamic. It’s really intense.”
If you have watched any of the Discovery Channel promos you‘ve heard Phil yelling at Jake. He says a lot things in the heat of moment as he’s very upset. Of course, this happens with families. But, you have to keep in mind that these guys live side by side in a very small area with little sleep and stressful work. Things can intensify quickly.
Next Tuesday, June 22, is the “Deadliest Catch” episode when our skipper suffers the stroke. I know some folks were asking when it would happen… to prepare themselves. I can understand that – seeing him on every week does make it feel as though he’s still with us.
The premiere episode of “After the Catch” follows directly after tonight’s episode of “Deadliest Catch”. This roundtable discussion show between the Captains will probably bring the humor we will all need. I talk about the show and the “behind the scenes” here and here.

For those of you that are dissing Jake let me tell you something. I to was very shocked at last nights episode and I can only hope that he has sought help. I was at CatchCon in Seattle this year and got the oppurtunity to meet Josh Harris first hand. I got to participate on his team for the crew relay race. He is truly a leader. But what he has always expressed and what he expressed on the Crew Panel is that he isn’t aiming for the Captains chair. Jake does want it. Jake even said so himself. But Jake admitted he had things he had to take care of first and go to school for it. I believe they will find a way to run their share of the boat as a team. And I hope they can do it in a way to make their father proud. Jake and Josh are good guys and they have been through a lot. And I just hope for the best for them and for the future of the Cornelia Marie.

Chip ~ Well said. Jake Anderson does need to grow up. Yes, he’s had some turmoil in his family life to deal with, but most of us have as well. I’m confused with what happened to him (his decline as a deckhand). He started out like gangbusters, but quickly fizzled into a typical me-generation whiner. I think he’s salvagable, but he’s got to 1) be confident in his abilities (he needs non-stop praise; not good), 2) shut up and keep working hard, 3) stop disrespecting those to whom he’s employed, and 4) try to align himself with Sig (as the Northwestern will someday need a new captain, and neither Edgar or Norm seem to want such responsibility).

Yes, he’s got a lot of growing up to do. I’ve seen flashes of brilliance as a deckhand, but he’s not ready for the Captain’s chair yet. However, if I remember reading right, Phil told the boys that Jake would make a better captain a few days before he died. Now if Phil says it, he ought to know what makes a good Captain as he became one fairly early on in his career.
Jake, quit the nonsense with drugs and drinking. You are better than that. Please get clean for the sake of your father’s memory and above all for your own health. There’s a bunch of us out here pulling for you. You’ve got this. Don’t be another statistic. Fight hard to make your life better.

Jim,
I’ve been thinking about Jake Anderson and wanted to get my thoughts together before I wrote them down. I hope they make sense. What I’m going to do is put your quote with my thoughts afterward. hope that you can figure it out.
“Yes, he’s had some turmoil in his family life to deal with, but most of us have as well. ”
I agree with you there. Jake A. has had to carry a heavy basket filled with trouble. Not many of us have had two process and function through two devastating situations in less than a year. Back in the days when dinosaurs walked the earth, I graduated with a degree in social work. For 31 years, I’ve worked for NOAA. Shows how much college means, but I digress…At that time we used this tool to screen people with called the holmes stress test. In it, they gave point values to different traumas. The only thing more stressful than losing a loved one is having a family member missing. If we experience just one of these two big events, we are more likely for serious injury and/or illness. Jake has had two of the worst things happen to him that a guy can face. I hate to say it, but it would have been better if his dad were dead. Waiting and wondering tares our guts out.
1. be confident Remember Jake came from a house filled with girls. In case you didn’t know it, gasp, women interact with each other differently than do men. Gosh with such insights why am I a lowly peon. I should have a million dollar talk show. Many of us gals get brownie points for intuition and feeling. Guys get their warmies from solving and doing. Jake has to play a game where he is just learning the rules with guys that are the ultimate in maleness. His mom probably held his hand, his sisters washed his clothes, and his puppy licked his face. Being in a tougher environment with a smack on the back and a “good job, nice work” kind of attitude will build his character. He may not like it, but these guys realize this and want him to succeed as a man in a manly profession. So he needs to suck it up and realize that feeling of esteem originate from within and not from without. Each of us knows if wehave performed well. If the dude in charge is pleased so be it.
2. shut up and keep working.
In my opinion Jake is confused about this. He talks about the wrong things and keeps the important things to himself. All the whining about “my arm hurts….” is really standing for “my heart is breaking.” He doesn’t want to bring up the thing that is closes to his heart, his dad, for fear he’ll break down. If he only knew that these guys would watch his back and stick up for him. They just didn’t know.
3) stop disrespecting those to whom he’s employed,
This is his most annoying trait. Again, blame his slew of sisters. Whining and stamping and pouting may get mom to do what you want, but it only makes Jake look like an idiot baby. Someone he respects needs to talk and show him how to handle aggression better. He needs to address issues rather than feelings and personalities.
4) try to align himself with Sig (as the Northwestern will someday need a new captain, and neither Edgar or Norm seem
to want such responsibility) I think Sig has a soft spot in his heart for this young man. He only has girls at home, and Jake could be the son he wants.
Jim Darlin’, please don’t think I’m trying to be a know it all. The motivations for our actions fascinate me. I just try to figure out why we do what we do. I’d be fascinated to read your thoughts. Enjoy your day.

Holly T. from WDC ~ Thanks for the “woman’s perspective” regarding Jake’s propensity to 1) pine for approval, 2) complain his way toward compassion, and 3) to sit when he pees (crude as it is, I just couldn’t refrain). I honestly liked the kid (okay, he may be 29, but it my murky middle-aged eyes he’s still a lad), but I can find little sympathy due to the way he’s been acting. I, too, was raised by the rule of women (grandma, ma, sis), but they made me earn my keep. Standing at the furnace of a man’s forged soul is a steely-eyed woman with asbestos mittens. If they catered to his every need, shame on them. They created a man who wears his underwear backwards. I truly hope ol’ Jake grows thick fields of hair on his arms to cover the feelings he so freely displays there. You have a fine day back in the land of massive monuments made with Colorado marble.

Thanks for the props on the writing, and I’m glad to provide comedic relief on the “gubbaments” dime (as I once toiled on Uncle Sam’s time). As I said, I truly appreciated your outlined synopses regarding the “educating” of Jake. He passed the greenhorn test with pennants a fluttering in the Bering Sea breeze. And he won the hearts of the testiest of crews to sail from Dutch Harbor. Now, all he needs to do is implement damage control. By the way, I’m former USCG, and I appreciate what you NOAA folks do. Much props to you.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice that in the scene prior to Phil going downstairs he was wearing a plain black shirt. When he came up from the wheelhouse after calling Jake a thief he was wearing the same black shirt. In the scene with Phil and Jake in the wheelhouse where Jake confesses and Phil rants, Phil is wearing a black shirt with white lettering running down the left arm. Interesting.

Jim, thanks for the kind words about my job. I’m just a support person who tracks inventories. Nothing exciting but necessary i guess. I’ve always been one for my job gives me a life and not visa versa.I raised two kids, home schooled them through high school, and did a lot of other stuff because my boring duties stay in the office!!
Thanks for the coast guard. The least recognized and most important uniform service in my book. I grew up in around and on the water all my life, and you guys were and are my heroes.
Love Deadliest Catch. This tuesday will be really hard for me because a year ago to the day my dad had a massive stroke from which he never recovered. It wasn’t until I started writing this to you that this connection came in to my mind. My father was a much older phil type guy. Never knew a stranger and was a very hard working person.

Holly T. ~ I’m glad you refer to your job as a way to life — not a way of life, and that you were a hands-on parent. I’m sorry about your father; I hope the memories are fond ones.
Regarding heroes, I think 9/11 depreciated the value of that label. A hero to me is a selfless act by someone who runs into a burning building to safe a stranger (or even someone they know) from death, or the soldier who threw himself onto a grenade to save fellow soldiers (i.e., sacrificing his life so others could live). Or a hero could be a mother who works a job, raises her kids, and leaves a void in the lives of her loved ones when she dies. Uniforms don’t make heroes, but heroic actions do. Just my take in a military-heavy state.

Yes, my dad was a wonderful man. During my teen years we had our differences, but once I moved out on my own, it was amazing how much smarter and wiser he became. Than goodness, right before he got ill, he and my son had a chance to reconcile. They had been on the outs for a few years, and were able to say sorry. Like Phil, he had a premonition that he was going to leave us. I just figured he was feeling his 91 years and didn’t put much concern in his words at the time.

Holly T. from DC ~ (Thanks for the room. As always, you were spectacular.) Regarding your pappy, 91 years in still flipping the calendar pages?! He either 1) lived a good life, 2) drank the right scotch or blended bourbon, 3) relieved his stress damn-near continously (as I do blogging and…well…flogging), and/or 4) married a woman who let him be.
Tonight I had to watch the last episode of DC again. Jake’s faux pas when leaving the bridge was caught and corrected by Josh. Josh had to know his brother was messed up. Now, Josh DEFINITELY knows he doesn’t want to be a fisherman for life, but know that he’s made money hand over fist, it will be harder for him to walk into a $30K-a-year job (or possibly less). I remember reading after Phil’s death that Jake was arrested for a vehicle-related incident, but I can’t recall specifics (and don’t care to Google it). I don’t know much about addiction (though I do watch Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew), I suspect that it will be hard for him to put the tragic loss of his father behind him AND kick the oxy. Speaking of which, I think Jake might just be a good candidate for Dr. Drew. He’s really had to work with some head-cases (e.g., Tom Sizemore, Heidi “Madame” Fleiss, dead Gary Coleman’s first wife from his third marriage). Serenity now!

Jessica,
The scariest thing you’ve got to do all day is drive to work?! Where do you live, Keokuk, Iowa? Gees… The scariest thing I’ve got to do is turn on my computer, make sure my coffee doesn’t get too cold before I drink it, and make sure I don’t sit on the throne with the seat up. Actually, I did drive in Boston once. I ended up in therapy for three years…but that was to rid myself of that dreaded accent.
Regarding Phil et al, they do have very tough jobs. Just being on board a ship in rough seas is challenging. Granted, the show’s producers don’t show the hours of boredom (like in the Coast Guard when just puttering around, waiting to board someone). I’m still ticked about the honchos in the wheelhouse of the Time Bandit. You do not watch large chunks of ice fall off a crane until someone gets hurt (or killed). No, you move the boom over to the stack, and then have someone use a long bar to break it off. They’re smarter than that. They run a million-dollar operation, and they do it well. But try explaining to someone’s wife and children why daddy’s gotta have someone feed him from now on… Where’s OSHA when you need it?

Did you know that studies indicate as many as 1 in 5 government jobs could be cut with no noticeable effect on the services it provides? Consider the government a business, it has expenses and employees, and it creates revenue and provides a service. From this standpoint, the U.S. Government is the most inefficient business in the country. When a business’ expenses greatly exceed its revenues it is faced with the choice of correcting its inefficiencies or shutting down. But not your employer, your employer provides itself with another option, it simply taxes people more (under threat of imprisonment) to sustain its existence. Unfortunately, while this tactic may work in the short term, it is not sustainable indefinitely. The fact that the United States is plummeting from its once mighty position as the richest county in the world is clear evidence of this. Providing people like YOU with jobs that “waste hard earned tax dollars” is destroying this country. I noticed you incorrectly used “two” in place of “to”. This exemplifies the FACT that most of the nation’s most intelligent citizens find employment in the private sector while the dullards depend on the government to provide them with ineffective jobs that waste tax dollars. I could probably spend a week in your office and consolidate every 10 positions into 6 or 7. But don’t worry, that only happens to companies in the private sector that wish to remain profitable. The government on the other hand protects its own interests and doesn’t allow such efficiency to be implemented in its own structure. The reason for this is because the government is providing you with your job as a social service. Sure we could streamline the government’s business operations and return it to profitability, but that would put millions of dullards like you out of work. As a business owner who provides 23 of my fellow citizens with jobs, I work hard to be part of the solution, and I am greatly offended when I read you mocking your tax wasting job. People claiming that Obama’s health care program is turning America into a socialist state are idiots, the government already is a socialist state, it provides millions of unnecessary jobs to people like you! As a government employee, you have much better health care than that which I purchase for myself and my employees. Which is ironic considering that as a job PROVIDER, I am a greater asset to society than you! People like me made this country great, leeches like you are bringing it down. I realize it is in no direct way your fault, just don’t rub it in my face.

Since I’m one of the 20% of adult blind people of working age americans who has a full time remunerative job, I don’t necessarily want your coming in and wiping it out. In your world would you be able willing and ballsy enough to hire me?
Yes, the government does have its problems. You could get rid of the entire department of education and who would know or care. Whoops, my prejudice is showing I’d better tuck it in.
NOAA gives you a lot of bang for your tax bucks. We forecast the weather, do climate work, make nautical charts study and regulate the fisheries and a lot of other stuff. The men on Deadliest catch could not perform their jobs without our products, which they get for free or very low cost. If you can find a way to provide these public services more efficiently and cheaply, I and many others would be interested to hear.
It’s really easy to whine bitch and moan. Finding solutions is much more challenging and not what most folk with your opinions seem willing to do. Enjoy your day.

Jim, While reading the comments of Josh on the newest post from Morgan, I realize now even more why Phil is such a part of my consciousness. My dad served in the European theater in World War II. he was wounded badly and they said he would never walk. At age 90 he got medals in the senior olympics for running swimming and bowling. Until the last six months, he jogged and swam every day. My book reading, food eating, overweight self is probably not in half as good shape as he.
My dad was told he was retarded. When he went in to the army they found out he had a near genius iq but was dyslexic. He could fix anything and his motto was “find a way or fake one.”
I could go on and on, but I’m starting my bad habbits from yesterday so will goto work and shut up.

Two things you can’t have on a crab boat are 1) someone under the influence of opiods, and 2) someone going through withdrawal from opiods. But I will tell you truthfully, given the choice, it is MUCH safer to have an addict using while working than going through withdrawal while working. To those who’ve never experienced opiate withdrawal symptoms I can tell you that it hurts, bad. There is probably no worse place in the world to go through withdrawal than aboard a crab boat in the Bering Sea. Now that would suck. My heart goes out to the young man, for so many reasons.

very true we don’t know everything about the Harris clan as all we get is an edited view.
I’ve been conversing with a family that was on Wife swap (or some such). the show made them look like spaced out hippie wacko’s and the father overly controling. they are nothing like that at all, things were heavily edited, pieces cut and pasted to make things more edgy and dramatic affect.
I’m not saying that Discovery channel edited the Jake confession for ratings or dramatic affect. Ornree noticed a change in Capt Phil’s shirt, so there could be something with the timing of events.
I hope Jake is able to pull himself together and get passed his addiction.

years ago, i was written up in a professional journal. this was in the early days of the pc era. with another gentleman i had put up a counseling board for deaf people. the guy who interviewed me said is was single,i was a newly wed, lived in a cojmpletely different place, had gone to schools i never attended. to his credit, he did get my age and name correct.

You know guys, I may be dumb but i don’t understand the big deal about the different shirt. has it ever occurred to you Ornree and Jamiew that when confronted with a major life altering revelation some people can’t process and integrate all the data and emotions that second? They get so angry that they have to walk off and get some space. they do such things as think, argue with themselves, pray, play the blame game,throw/break things, and then return to the discussion with a clearer perspective. Sometimes this cooling and calming process takes five minutes, often for many of us it can last for 24 hours or even a couple days. It may have taken Jake some time to realize that admitting his problem would go a long way to clearing the air with his dad and salvaging their relationship. This, not Discovery lying to us as it seems you are intimating, could account for the fashion inconsistencies. In the sweeping panoply of history life and the universe, what difference does it really make? Someone did something wrong, a horrible argument insued, the guilty party manned up and is getting help today. What they wore to the events is really inconsequential.

what a blab. in only 2 weeks! it’s great that this show I enjoy is obsessed upon by so many viewers because I know it should stay alive for a while. Let’s face it though, how many, of you devotees, will help put DC in the grave now? So many of you are yuppies, city slicks and all of you are paid slaves. new age slaves working on some kind of new age American plantation. Mindlessly working your life away in the fear of the new age whips of your new age owners. Letting the rich screw you out of your benefits, out of your retirements and out of the decent family life that just 50 years ago was enjoyed by people who did no more than you are doing now. do you really feel that sorry for anybody? Don’t you have such a pitiful existence that the drama of people actually living in this world is all you have to look forward too? and yeah it’s sad Phil passed. I don’t enjoy death unless it’s getting to watch a bus full of fat cats run off a cliff and fall to their death. if that’s ever caught on film, it would be truly cenematic. A Kodak island moment. but still, we are surely not the hard and fast nation that we once were. no. our hard and fast are either buried where they fell or living under the bridge you cross on your treacherous route to work. You there jimb….. making some coment about Jake A. being a ME generation punk kid. I don’t know what “generation” 1978 models are but that would be mine. I don’t know if you took the time to be a father or if you skipped that part like a lot of “your gen” did but, one thing for sure, kids don’t change. People all start out kicking, screaming and able to vavuum up everything they can see, hear, touch, smell, taste. We as a society are so eager to place blame that we seem to skip the analogging and just judge each other immediatly based on our digital receptions. I have PTSD. If you want to trash me like you did jake A, won’t you ask yourself “If every action we take in life is just a means to the same pre-determined end then why do we even try?” Jake A. does try. Anyone, who’s life has been so humbled as his, who can find the heart to go on in this, some cruel man made hell, should be supported not spat on. I find you people strange. I think if you look deep inside yourselves, you must know why. Good luck DC

Ben diamante is absolutely right. I struggled with addiction for about 5 years and got clean about two years ago. Everyone says “just stop taking drugs” well it’s not that easy. You’re physically sick and the only thing that makes you feel better is getting high. Being stuck on a crab boat in the freezing Bering Sea would probably be one of the worst places to go through withdrawal. In Jake’s mind, he HAD to steal his dads pills to feel better, to feel normal. Not saying it was right but it’s what he needed to do. Until someone goes through opiate addiction and understands you have no right to say anything at all. I wish the best for Jake in his recovery and my condolences to the entire Harris family and anyone who’s lives were touched my Phil in anyway

I hate to say it, but someone has to. Smoking killed Phil Harris, plain and simple. It is unfortunate he had to die so young.
If any lesson is to be learned from his passing, let it be QUIT SMOKING!

Cap’n Phil was an opiate addict just like his son. Interesting that he didn’t have his stroke until the haul was delivered and also interesting that he didn’t “check out” until right after his son signed up for rehab. Very, very sad outcome but Phil felt immense guilt for his absence raising his sons when they were much younger and didn’t have the will to live once both of his sons left his side in the hospital to attend to the family business or go to rehab.

It is true you never know how much is edited for the show so they can create the entertainment desired. However; that being said, it is a nice edition to the TV shows offered these days.

I think that new capt (won’t give him the benefit of putting his name here) just wanted the exposure. Cameras do crazy things to WEAK people.I think Jake is clean in honor of his Dad. I think new capt couldnt find the crab and it was convenient to blame Jake. He is an a**. Captain Phil would be rolling over in his grave…
