Deadliest Catch surfing Time Bandit Style

Time Bandit surfs through False Pass
Did you watch last night’s episode of Deadliest Catch? The first 10 minutes featured the F/V Time Bandit facing big waves. The night shots of the Time Bandit traveling through the waves was amazing – footage that really doesn’t exist anywhere else. When the sun rose, Capt. Johnathan and his brother deliberated about whether to go through “False Pass” while the seas were high. Of course, they could have waited for the weather to come down but most skippers hate waiting for anything.
I have been through False Pass many times on the Cornelia Marie. However, I have never experienced False Pass like the Time Bandit did last night. If you look at the image above, you can see a 25 foot wave breaking behind the boat – that’s crazy.
It was a good idea to have the whole crew in the wheelhouse watching for the navigation buoys. This is a realistic situation that I have been in many times. When the seas are high and the tide is strong, it’s hard to see those buoys. When I was young, I felt great when the Old man would always ask me to come up and help him look for buoys when traveling through narrow passes. It was only years later that I found out he was partially color blind and had a difficult time distinguishing between the red and green buoys.

That episode going through South Pass was better than any action movie produced. My stomach would lurch not knowing which way the stern would fall off the wave. Cheers for the camera crew.

That was quite the episode! ‘Red right returning’ kept going through my head, although I haven’t been on any type of vessels for many a year. I thought that Capt. Jonathan was retiring and Andy wanted to spend more time with his family and horses. What happened?
Morgan, do you still work on a f/v during crab season? Would you ever think about taking over the Cornelia Marie? Your mother must have a big say in what happens next since she is a majority stockholder. I find it difficult to hear some of the plans Capt. Phil had, knowing that he wouldn’t be there. I understand why it is so difficult for your mother to watch Deadliest Catch. By the way, the Cornelia Marie is the best looking of all the f/v that I have seen!

Being interested in boat design,I keep wondering about the one boat that has the pilot house up forward not giving the captain a view of the deck (and potential rogue waves). Even without power a boat without power would naturally point into the wind. But then someone said that they would be in the lee and it would protect them from the wind if heading into the wind.
Also I wondder what a person would wear under the rain suit oil skins?

Morgan, I noticed that when Capt. Phil had the stroke, that his son,Josh said that he wanted to call “Cornelia”. I thought that showed maturity. He was told to wait. When did your Mom find out? Also, it really speaks to the brotherhood of the Bering Sea that Capt. Johnathan went to the hospital in Anchorage and stayed with Josh and Jake!

I as on the Orca skipered by Harold Munson. I have gone thru False pass a number of times from 1975 thru 1977. On the tender Orca pulling a barge of course I had to pull in the barge by hand. Harold would get close and I would run and jump on the barge throw the to bridle loose Harold would swing around come alongside I would tie up the barge to the Orca. Compass course only we had no radar let alone loran (does any body remeber Loran)This was done 35 years ago when there wasn’t even a marked channel thru False Pass. They didn’t do anything heroic. Try it at 2:00am in a pea soup fog compass course only like I have.

Having a 25-foot wave towering over you must be a scary AND exhilarating experience! As a passenger, I went through 10-foot waves in the Galapagos, and that was enough for an experience I’ll never forget.
