Cornelia Marie and Capt. Phil Update
The F/V Cornelia Marie has been out of commission since the middle of February with a replacement of our “reduction gear” needed. This has been a costly and burdensome repair. The entire crew has been off since Capt. Phil’s memorial on February 21st.
Finally, the crew is headed back to Alaska to finish up the long Opilio season. We still have a couple of trips left to meet our crab quota. Unfortunately, most of Alaska, including Dutch Harbor is experiencing a late winter storm with blowing snow and freezing temperatures.
Despite the icy conditions, the Cornelia Marie is anxious to get back to work. The crew consists of Derrick Ray as skipper, Steve Ward as Engineer, deck boss Freddie Maugatai and deck hand Ryan Simpson. We will be hiring another fisherman from Dutch Harbor to help out while the boys are away. Josh and Jake are dealing with their father’s affairs and it is unknown if they will return to finish the season.
Tomorrow, Captain Harry Lewis from the F/V Incentive will be talking on the (internet) radio about Capt. Phil. Capt. Harry was a great friend of Phil’s and wanted to express his thoughts and share some fond memories. Tune in March 13, 2010 at 3 PM Eastern time at http://www.mhbradio.com.
The passing of Capt. Phil continues to weigh heavy on our minds. We are always grateful to everyone who emails. We do read them all.

I just saw the seaon 6 season premier and I was taken back by a quote from Phil “you can either make it happen, watch what happened or wonder what the F*** happened” I think that will stick with me for a very long time. I hope the boys listened to their dad as he had his profound moments. R.I.P Phil, safe sailing and fertile fishing grounds

The show must go on. We all miss Phil like we would a family member. Josh and Jake are in our Hearts and Prayers. We are all still watching to see that they are ok. We need our conclusion, we need to see Josh and Jake back on the show. I think we all feel this way. They will make the show this season just by showing up after Phils Death. The show will not be the same without Phil but we need our closure.

Watchin’ Phil was like watchin’ my Uncle Frank. Big gruff guy that would kick your ass if you got outta line, and was always there when you needed help. Watching this season is gonna be hard, even though I know we’ll see Phil again when our time comes. God bless the Harris clan.

I love the show the Deadliest Catch I can not wait for the new season to start i enjoy the show so much and the people on the show although admittingly i do have a favorite the Cornelia Marie Captain Phil and the crew always had me smiling laughing and shaking my head. I loved Captain Phil and his passing is still heart breaking almost like you feel like you lose a dear friend when you watch them on tv it feels like they become apart of your life as funny as that sounds… I hope that Cornelia Marie will be able to continue on and that his sons will join in on the boat once again… I wish them a wonderful season and hope that the crab will come to the Cornelia Marie and that they will kick butt.. I know that Phil will be watching over his crew and his boat. I hope like Phil that you make sure you watch like he always did looking for those “fart bubbles” Good luck to you all on the Cornelia Marie may all you be safe on your journeys.

I want to send my condolences to the family, and thank them for sharing with us over the last 5 years. Josh and Jake, you had a great father. We never think our parents know anything, but when they’re gone, we realize as we grow older, they were the wisest of all. God bless your family and we’ll be praying for you.

I just listened to the Dj that intervied Phil and it was good. Phil was Phil joking like he always did it was good to hear his voice. Phil was the kind of person that everyone liked he was very down to earth and had a magnetic personality that drew you to him like a magnet. He was a tough man but under that interior was a very loving father and friend to all. He really was a good father to his boys he loved them very much even though they did things that all kids do and have done. He always had some funny sayings also like the one that when he was mad at Josh he said ” I think that he is the milkmans son” but we all know that he was on joking that was Phil. He reminds me of my late Uncle rugged, ruff and spoke what was on his mind. My Uncle was onry like him always doing something to amuse people and you couldn’t help but like him. I give him praise as to the blood clots I had 2 of them myself on in the left leg and one below the knee and one in the groin and that was scary,I had a filter put in my vein that would catch the big clots and then destroy them the little clots weren’t that life threatening and I was surprised that they didn’t do that with Phil it might have saved his life.. Gone by closer to the heart.

Howdy,
When I heard of Capt Phils passing earlier this year, I got weepy. As I watch this season, I seem to continue. I’m finally at the place where I can write something. (God what a melodramatic intro – sorry about that).
Of all the Captains on Deadliest Catch, Capt. Phil was the one I related to the most. He had an admirable combination of pragmatist and philosopher. To me, he was an every man (meaning nothing but the best), who took on the greatest challenge and loved to do so.
My Dad passed away about 13 years ago. I guess I’m saying I feel for you all, and I’m praying for you all. If you want me to pray for anything specific, please email it to me.
Thanks,
Jess Stuart

I just wanted to say i absolutely love deadliest catch, and captain phil is my personal favorite. I like Sig but i think he is a little more hollywood possibly than phil was. However, I am 23 and def. know what a loss like this feels like i lost my mother at 17. To Jake and Josh hold your heads up time will heal all pain. I think it would make your old man smile down on yall to get back on that boat and continue on with his legacy. However, i do also understand this may not be an easy task to take on whatever the case may be. My heart and prayers go out to the family and all the people that bust their ass for the show, crab, and fortune. Last but not least thank you for allowing us to enjoy a little piece of your life. I am in the oilfield and yall make what we do look like office work.

Seeing Capt. Phil reminds me of my Dad especially when he said when we are out here at work your not my son its business (my Dad told me the exact same thing). You could just see it in Phil’s face when he was talking to his boys that even though he would set them straight his love was unconditional. What a man he was! He was real and there is not many more like him. May his family be blessed

He was and always will be “Deadliest Catch”. From the first second I watched this amazing show Captain Phill Harris was the reason I kept tuning back in, I was watching him and his crew fish when the show was just called Alaskan crab fishing. His pull no punches and nip it in the bud attitude and ofcourse, his ability to roll with whatever came his way with a smile, was what I admired most no matter how big the problem Phill handled it in only a way he could. He was a Captain and a father that I connected with and enjoyed watching. Rest in peace. You are missed.

When the family gathers to eat Alaskan crab I make sure the entire family prays for the safety of the fishing crews and remembers the sacrifice of the fishermen that gave their lives so we could eat such a delicious meal. Corn farmers rarely die plying their trade, but Alaskan fishermen often die so we can enjoy the bounty of the sea. So when you eat your crab dinner, say a prayer for Captain Phil and all the brave men that live and die by the sea.

I’ve been a huge fan of DC since its first season. Unless it’s a sporting event, I don’t watch regular broadcast TV. History and Discovery are all I watch. DC is my favorite show on Discovery (Sorry Mike)
Things have been financially hard for me the past couple of years, so I haven’t had cable to be able to watch. I’ve been watching over this Memorial Day weekend and saw that Capt Phil had been experiencing some serious health issues. But, so far, in what I’ve seen, he’s been doing a great job of recovering. And now today, I saw on the Northwestern’s website that he passed a few months ago, which was a crushing blow. Sig and Phil are my favorite Captains in the fleet.
RIP Phil, the show won’t be the same, or as good without you.
Jake and Josh, rest assured that your father is someplace better, where there are no health issues, negative 20 degree temperatures, 40 foot rogue waves, and the pots all have 1000 keepers, which the processors pay $10 apiece for. I wish you both all the best in wherever your lives take you in the future and hope that I will continue to see you on the show in the future.

I can’t seem to get enough of reading about Capt. Phil and his sons. Like everyone, he was my favorite. What we saw on tv was just who he was. A remarkable man. Who would work for free under those kind of conditions just to make a point he could do the job! Wonderful character. I hope the boys have inherited a lot from Capt. Phil. I surely will miss everything about him. My thoughts and prayers are with Joshua and Jacob.
