Capt. Phil’s Story Continues on Deadliest Catch

Josh, Jake and father Phil

The hard to watch story of our skipper continues tonight on the “Deadliest Catch”.  Tonight, Phil gets medevacked to Anchorage.  It’s at this point that my Mom, Cornelia M. Devlin joins the family at the hospital.  We also call up good family friend Derrick Ray to fly into St. Paul to take over as skipper of the FV Cornelia Marie.  Derrick is a well known Bering Sea Captain and Phil’s friend as well.  I will write more about Derrick later in the week.  Josh has been speaking to news agencies this week.  You can view his interview with People magazine here.  Deadliest Catch will focus on the passing of our skipper for the remaining episodes.  Here’s a look at what’s left for the season (from Deadliest Reports).

DEADLIEST CATCH: Episode 12 – Tuesday, June 29 at 9PM ET/PT

The rest of the fleet begins to hear the unsettling news of their friend and fellow skipper.  Captains Sig Hansen, Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand and Keith Colburn all react with stunned disbelief while still keeping an eye on the turbulent waters, as the Bering Sea stops for no one.

DEADLIEST CATCH: Episode 13 – Tuesday, July 6 at 9PM ET/PT

Josh and Jake Harris continue to watch over their dad at the Anchorage hospital.  They are joined by Johnathan Hillstrand as well as Phil’s inner circle of biker buddy friends.  Ever the stubborn fighter, Phil rallies in the ICU.

DEADLIEST CATCH: Episode 14 – Tuesday, July 13 at 9PM ET/PT

Despite small signs of encouragement, Captain Phil loses his battle.  He passes away surrounded by family and friends.

AFTER THE CATCH: Episode 5 – Tuesday, July 13 at 10PM ET/PT

The fleet wraps up its time at the French Quarter’s Blue Nile bar in the season finale of AFTER THE CATCH.  Captain Phil Harris is remembered in true ‘Nawlins style as fans pour onto Frenchmen Street for a traditional, raucous Jazz Parade.  The celebration brings together all the captains to pay tribute to their friend and colleague.

DEADLIEST CATCH: Episode 15 – Tuesday, July 20 at 9PM ET/PT

The news of Phil’s death reaches the rest of the fleet.  Captains Keith, Johnathan, Andy and Sig all struggle to come to terms with their friend and colleague’s passing.

DEADLIEST CATCH: CAPTAIN PHIL HARRIS REMEMBERED – Tuesday, July 20 at 10PM ET/PT

A special one-hour look back at the life of Captain Phil Harris, skipper of F/V Cornelia Marie.  The special includes interviews with fellow captains and deckhands, memorable “Phil moments” from the past six seasons of DEADLIEST CATCH, never-before-seen footage from behind the scenes and fan remembrances recorded at CatchCon 2010 and Phil’s public memorial service in Seattle.

DEADLIEST CATCH: Episode 16 – Tuesday, July 27 at 9PM ET/PT

On the finale of the sixth season of DEADLIEST CATCH, the fleet is still absorbing the news about Phil.  But the stormy waters of the Bering Sea never take a break, and the Captains and the crew must soldier on in the race to make their quotas, as the Opilio season comes to an end.

Tonight’s episode is going to be so sad. I know that next week’s will be worse. I am not looking forward to saying good-bye to Captain Phil. It hasn’t fully sank in that he is really gone since we see him every week on DC. I think out of all the episodes that we have seen so far will be nothing compared to next week’s.

I’m sure I speak for all who regularly watch the Deadliest Catch, that Phil will truly be missed! All of our prayers go out to the Harris Family & the CM crew for their devastating loss!

Thanks, Steve. I bought tickets for a co-worker and I today. We are both looking very forward to going, even though we will be way up on the second level.

After watching tonight’s episode I just have to say that my respect for Josh Harris tripled.

I’m buying a big box of tissues for next week’s episode.

Last night was truly the saddest thing I have seen in a while. It broke my heart to see Phil in a hospital bed with half of his face paralyzed and the famous mullet gone. ;>( I cried from the moment they showed the hopstial to the end. The worst was the previews for the next episode hearing Josh say “we lost dad”. I am blown away at how Josh stepped up and was such a rock. I can remember when my mom died, feeling like Jake. I can remember telling my older sister that it was so easy on her and the she must not care because she hadn’t cried but I know now that was not the case. She was affected but was trying to hold it together for me as the baby of the family. I saw the same in Josh last night. He may not have been crying but you can definately see the hurt, stress, and grief on his face. It does take it’s toll. Jonathan broke my heart when he broke down after visiting Captain Phil. It’s hard to see these rugged, hard-working, foul mouthed men that we love, cry. Not that they are weak, it is just so unexpected. Jonathan is the best for stepping up to be a support system to Josh and Jake. The more I watch DC the more I love Freddie too! He has the greatest heart and is always trying to be positive and optimistic with his broken english and all :>)

After the Catch was sad to watch too. To see how DC put together some of those touching moments for them to watch was awesome. Captain Phil said what he meant and meant what he said! The world needs more Captain Phil’s in it! I will miss seeing Captain Phil on the boat and although he is gone he is never going to be forgotten. Keep up the hard work guys and lay off the sibling rivalry a bit. That was the funniest part of the show last night seeing Phil roll his eyes as the boys bickered over the ice chips. In the end Phil got what Phil wanted…ice. I wish Jake nothing but the best with his issues. It gets harder before it gets easier. Josh, I wish you the best also and to take the path in life that makes you guys happy. Your dad would be proud! I will be glued to the set next week and I’m sure I will be balling my eyes out. R.I.P Captain Phil, you are loved and truly missed by many!

When I first heard about Captin Phil’s stroke and subsequent death, I was very saddened. After watching him and his boys over the years you begin to feel like you know them personally. You go through that roller coaster with them albeit in a much warmer and dryer setting. This season of Deadliest Catch has been especially hard because you knew all along what the outcome would be, but knowing did not prepare me for these last few episodes. I never imagined how much I would be effected until these shows aired. Seeing the drama of the great Captain unfold, I feel like I’m watching a friend/relative in his final days. I have never cried so much for someone I’ve never met and I know I will shed more before this whole thing is through. I really felt compelled to let the family know how much being let into their lives has meant to me and they will continue to be in my prayers and thoughts! Josh and Jacob have been very strong during this great tragedy and our deepest sympathies go out to them and the entire Harris family!

I cried like a baby during last night’s episode. The coolest thing about Phil, was that he was a regular guy just doing what he loved. Discovery has done a great job of these last episodes. This is my favorite show on TV – my husband and my kids love it too – the only show I will rush home to watch. Real people with real stories to tell. Men that never intended to be famous – they were just doing their jobs. I wish there were more shows like this on TV. Josh and Jake – I hope you guys are able to work things out – you are both great men and I hope you continue on the Cornelia Marie.

After watching the episode of DC which aired on 07/06/10, I had a thought. Well I had many, but this is the one I want to put forward.

I was so impressed with Josh’s maturity and emotional strength. Even more inspiring was the way Johnathan Hillstrand came forward to help the boys. You know, I think that he needs new scenery in his life. He ought to captain the CM. His brother can stay with the TB. The boys both respect and like Johnathan. He appears to be an excellent teacher and doesn’t take crap off of anybody. So before he retires, he ought to give a year to the CM to be their mentor. Without his dad around Scottie will have more freedom to decide what he wants without his pressuring him in to his dream. Mike Fourtner can take more of a leadership role with advice and ssistance from andy. Just a thought…… I’ll shut up now….
Oh my gosh another holly. We’re everywhere we’re everywhere!!!

    My dear Josh and Jake

Especially now with your father passing we all know you two are going through rough times but please you brothers need not to fight between one another. “The Captain” wouldn’t want this to be. He loved and was so proud of his boys, he just wanted you two to get along with one another. Be strong for your father, this is how he would want it to be !!
“The Captain” was loved by many but remenber, we all love Josh and Jake too. Take care and God Bless

One thing about all of this…
We are actually watching a man die on “Live” TV…
We all know the outcome but…

This is NOT a “Soap Opera” as to speak where charactors die every day..
This is real life and I don’t think this kind of stuff has ever been on TV before..
Discovery has really broken the mold on “Reality”…
    Hat’s off to Capt. Phil..
He wanted to show all and they did.

    Next week will absolutly suck.
But with tears in the eyes we will watch.

    RIP Phil.

    Steve.

It sucks watching Josh and Jake butt heads, especially with the way Jake is trying to deal with Phil’s condition. I hope Jake was serious about getting help this offseason.

I never thought this day would come so soon. I have been watching this show from the very first episode and love the captains and crew very much. I hate to see Jake and Josh going thru this ordeal. I have always said that Phil and sig were my favorites and if anything ever happend to 1 of them I will quit watching the show, well…..even tho sig is sig is still on the show, it seems the fleet is breaking apart. I dont know if I will ever watch the show again. Capt. Phil…we all love you and miss you. Smooth sailing now with calm seas.

Wow…it has come too soon. I cried the day I heard of his paasing like he was a close family friend. Discovery has dine a great job of helping us get to know all these crew members. I am saddened by the loss of Capt Phil. He was a great captain and a great father. His tough love approach worked well with his boys. Despite the conflicts, you could just see the love he had for each of them. We bought tix to see the show in Lowell this september and I can’t wait. I am forever a fan and will pray for the Harris family. RIP Capt Phil.

Too Josh, Jake, Mrs. Harris and the friends and family of Capt. Phil! We’ve watched your show since inception, cheering on your family through the good and bad as a family close knit as you seem very much to be. We lost my husband, the father of a 15, 27 and 31 year old, who miss their Dad painfully after 5 months. We lost him 6 days before Phil passed away.. of cancer. We know you, if you even watch the show, will be reliving a very tradjic loss suffered by your family. My 15 year old is determined to watch and I will relive it with him and pray for us and your family as you continue to heal, only 5 months later!!! God Bless!

I wrote a poem dedicated to Captain Phil, Jake and Josh, Cornelia and Morgan, his crew, his extended fishing family, and all of his DC fans

The Cornelia Marie, she will sail on,
We fans will grieve, our Captain gone.
That bear of a man, we loved so well,
He sailed rough seas in a living Hell.
He battled huge waves, he won his prize,
His two sons on deck, such pride in his eyes.
He taught them to fish, he taught so much more,
He’ll surely be part of crab fishing lore.
We will always love him, we’ll never forget,
His voice, eyes, and wisdom, his wonderful wit.
One day it will happen, we won’t know when,
A memory of Phil will cause us to grin.
So sail on our Captain, on Heavenly seas,
Ride your Harley and fish…just do what you please.
You’ll live in our memories, you’ll live in our hearts,
You’re now teaching Angels to look for crab farts!

God bless Captain Phil Harris. Sail on,
    our Captain, sail on.

    Karen

I can’t help but think that Phil Harris had a wake-up call last season when he was hospitalized with a blood clot. Perhaps if he stopped smoking and laid off the Red Bull that maybe he could have survived that terrible stroke. I just hope his boys won’t suffer the same fate as their father. Stop smoking and while you’re young boys. Your future children will thank you.

I have to say that DC has done a terrific job showing these finals sccenes of Captain Phils life. They have not shown too much and show great respect for a man who deserved it. My heart goes out to the other captains, the crews and Cornelia and family. Most of all to Josh and Jake, you have my deepest sympathies. Your maturity and strength set you apart and will help you through this difficult time. Past and future. God Bless You.

Jake and Josh gave their father something that was most precious in the world. Themselves. You could tell that Capt. Phil, no matter what happened, could not stay mad at either son and absolutely loved being able to be around them, good bad or otherwise. He was proud of both sons and the time he had with them meant the most to him. He will be greatly missed by all.
