Capt. Phil honored during filming of “After the Catch”
“After the Catch” returns for its fourth season on Tuesday, June 15 at 10PM ET/PT, bringing together the Captains and crew of “Deadliest Catch”. This year, Captains Sig Hansen, Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand, “Wild Bill” and Keith Colburn will pay tribute to our Captain Phil Harris. Also, this year Discovery Channel is bringing back Mike Rowe as the host of the series. He was absent last year due to a busy schedule, but thankfully he’s back this year.
On June 9, 2010, Discovery Channel had a Captain Phil jazz funeral parade through New Orleans. I found this video on youtube which gives us a good idea of what to expect on the show. One of our fans, Tammy Carman was on hand to take some pictures and give a great write-up of her experience:
We had a great time celebrating the beloved skipper! It was extremely hot, but worth every second. The captains and crews took lots of time out to meet all their anxious fans. Jake and Josh were absolute sweethearts! Phil raised 2 very fine young men! Although Jake seemed a little shy, he still took a few minutes to sign an autograph for my 11 year old neice, and take a pic or two.
Josh and Freddie talked to a few of us for a long time! Josh told us how great it was that we did that for his dad and how Phil would have loved it! He also told me not to get him started on Jake when I asked if he ever found his gear upon returning to the CM from the NW! lol Turns out that Jake’s gear was in his bunk the whole time! I tried to defend Jake, as I always do, by saying, “but he’s so cute and little that you gotta love him!” Josh replied, “There’s not a bottle of aspirin big enough for that f***ing headache!” Josh made me feel like we’ve known each other for awhile.
Tammy ended the note with her desire to let Jake and Josh know how grateful she is for the time they spent to talk to her and hang out. Thanks Tammy, they know. Tammy is in the second photo from the left. The rest of the photos come from Lisa Phelps who you can see in the fourth photo from the left holding a sign with a picture of Capt. Phil.
The guys were busy in New Orleans. They were recently on Larry King Live talking about the BP oil spill. They toured the Gulf Coast and talked to the local fishermen. You can watch the video here or by clicking on the pic below.

Thank you Morgan for sharing this with us!Love the write up too! It was really nice of both ladies to share the pics and write up. Most of us are no where near New Orleans, so it really helps us be part of the event.
Wonder what Capt. Phil would have thought of the event?
PS Where can we get shirts like the ones everyone was wearing? With Capt. Phil on the front.

Thanks for showing the larry king live. Honestly, I’m not a big watcher of CNN, and didn’t know he was still with us. He’s got to be 90 years old. Frankly, I can’t stand the current iteration of the man. In the past, he was the best interviewer anywhere. Now, in his dotage, he reminds me of a character in that movie grumpy old men.
I was proud of all the guys but most especially sig and keith. Of course mike Rowe was his usual charming articulate self. That’s his job. You could see the empathy in these men.
Lizzard Kin, I mean larry king, just seems so jaded and hard. He’s trying to cook up controversy at all costs. I noticed this in the show a few years ago with Phil and the boys. Now that was an interesting mix. Even more so it seems true now.

Wish they still had some of those Crab shirts like Captain Phil had on his website. Those were so cool!

Thank you, Morgan, for keeping us up to date. It is comforting to touch base with others who are processing their way through Phil’s passing. Sig said earlier “He lives on”, and that feels right to me, and I think I’ll see it that way forever.
I also love the shirt with Phil on the front and would love to have one. I was comforted again to see Phil’s face on that shirt during the Larry King segment with the guys commenting on the BP oil spill. What they said was a great validation of the feelings of fishermen, fisheries, the industry and Americans.
I think the Bering Sea fishermen, who face death daily for a living, are some of the wisest among us.

Morgan,
Thank you so much for sharing the pictures and all! I love seeing these pictures!
It was so nice of people to share them so that you could share with those of us who could not go to New Orleans.
I was touched too at the fact that the other guys took time to go on Larry King regarding the oil spill.

hollyt – the shirt everyone is talking about has a picture of Captain Phil on it.
Above the picture of Captain Phil it says Captain Phil Harris. Then the Cornelia Marie logo is below that, but above the picture of Captain Phil.
Really nice shirt! The shirts they are wearing are black. I would love a grey one though.

I was just on the Deadliest Catch website reading about the new episode that will be on this week.
It says that one of the boys is going to reveal a dark family secret to Phil. Has anyone seen a preview for the upcoming week? Any idea what is going on?

yes, I just saw the preview about 20 secconds ago. Phil says to some unknown person “when we get home I don’t ever want to see you again.” I have no idea what this is about but it doesn’t sound great. Additionally, I wonder about the advisability of revealing a deep family secret when people are under stress and pressure. After several trips down that bumpy road I have found Those are usually received and processed better after a nice big dinner comprised of the recipients favorite foods accompanied by several hefty adultt beverages.

Morgan, what a wonderful post! Thank you for sharing with us. I heard about the Jazz Funeral and really would like to have been there. (work that day)
I love it when you share pictures like that!
I agree with others who have said the t-shirts worn by Jake, Josh and the others are pretty awesome!
Morgan, please thank the other captains for coming and taking time to visit our area, and talking to Larry King. The oil spill has hurt things pretty bad down this way, and for them to come here and do that speaks volumes to me on what kind of men they are.

I think Phil would have laughed his butt off, but he would say I love those guys! They are the best friends a man could ever have.
I second the t-shirts, I know I would buy two of them one in black and one in white(since my mother wears only white shirts).
RIP Phil.
Josh and Jake, your father is always watching over you. Never forget he loved you so very much. Keep fishing and keep smiling.

Thank God you are bringing back Mike Rowe to “after the catch”.
I don’t think I made it through one episode last season of after the catch – the guy who was on from that stupid cab show didn’t have that connection that Mike has with the captains.
It’s hard to watch the catch this year know that Phil has passed, there will be a big absence next year with Phil missing. He is missed!

This is a great fan site! Thanks so much for the pictures and the posts. It’s especially cool that you CARE about these men (the captains and crew) and it comes through on your site! I would have loved to have gone to a couple of recent events, like the Jazz Funeral for Capt.Phil, but I always learn about them after the fact. I also never know about the TV appearances until they’ve aired.. Where can I find their appearance schedule? Is there a site that has such info? Thanks again for your work on this site! Warm Regards.

Just watched 06/15/10 show of DC. It about broke my heart to see Captain Phil and Jake. I hope with all my heart Jake will get through everything he was enduring then and now. It’s strange, I always thought it was so ridiculous when people fell in love with movie stars but if there is anyway to love someone you don’t really know, I tell you, I love the Harris family and everything they elect to share with all of us. My heart goes out to you both, Jake and Josh, and hope you will be okay through out everything you’ve had to suffer. Peace be with you.

I’m not too sure I’ll be able to watch next week…so much sadness. I’ve been dreading this episode. My own mother died soon after Captain Phil and I can’t imagine how his boys are dealing with their grief. On the positive side, how wonderful for them that they know how many people cared for their father and that his life touched so many. I think it might comfort them on some level. I hope it does.

I find it amazing how we can be so touched, so deeply affected by events that come to light on a highly popular televised program. Within 6 seasons, we have become connected with several Capt’s and their crews on Deadliest Catch. They are as real to us as our own next door neighbors.
I want to thank everyone who has shared their experiences here…from the camera crews that choose to risk their lives bringing our favorite fishermen into the livingrooms of millions. To all the folks that have the opportunity to attend the events of where they show up, then posting the pictures they capture.
To the Harris boys; I know my heart is heavy with the passing of your father, so I can only imagine that yours is ten times ten times ten heavier than that. Be thankful of the time you’ve shared, the lessons he’s taught, and the wisdom he has passed on to you

Last night’s episode where Phil catches Jake stealing his meds hit me as if from nowhere! Phil had just had a dizzy spell.. Now it looks obvious to me this revelation had to have contributed to Phil’s stroke. It made me cry to see Jake pathetically plead with his father to forgive him. I know Phil was angry, but I can’t believe he really would never want to see his own son again. Jake needs help. On the other hand, I hope Jake understands the consequences of his actions. It cost his father his life. That has to weigh very heavy on his mind. So sad. Rest in peace, Phil. Let’s get it together, Jake!

Cathy…Jakes actions did not cost his father his life. Captain Phil has been ill for years. It looks like the “dizzy spell” was a mini stroke. It did not help that he got so upset but it is not what caused it.

Rest in peace Captain Harris. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching you and your two sons. Watching the three of you reminds me a whole lot of my dad, brother and I.
Jake & Josh,
Hang in there guys. I lost my dad eight years ago and while the hurt never completely goes away, it becomes less and less as time goes on and you remember the really great times that you had with your dad. You’ll be doing something and all of a sudden you’ll be reminded of a good time that you had with your dad and a smile will cross your face. :) It happens to me often.

Thanks, Tammy, for sharing your photos and story with us. Wish I could have been there.(Wish I could have been at the public memorial celebration for Capt. Phil in Seattle, too.)
Capt. Phil did, indeed, raise two great sons. To me, he had the dad thing developed into an art form; he was so good at it. Andy and Johnathan said he was like a father to them, too, even though he was only a few years older than they are. My heart went out to Johnathan during “After the Catch” last night when they got to talking about Phil and they showed the clips of Phil and Johnathan with their motorcycles. Johnathan got emotional and had to leave the table for a bit, and the program went to commercial break. (By the way, nice tributes to the skipper at the Blue Nile, with the pictures of the Phil on the walls and the Duck Farts.) I love Johnathan. He’s rough and fun-loving on the outside, but he’s also gentle and tenderhearted. He promised Phil he’d look after Jake and Josh. Oh, gosh! It’s all SO sad!!
Well, the next couple of weeks of “Catch” will be the episodes we’ve been dreading all season. I’ll be recording them, but I don’t think I’ll be able to watch them, at least not yet. We’ll be losing our beloved Capt. Phil all over again and it’ll be just too painful.
Joann, I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. I never, ever imagined that I would lose my heart to a bunch of Bering Sea crab fishermen, but I have, gladly, and, if there’s a cure for “Deadliest Catch” fever, I don’t want anything to do with it! My beloved crabbers have made me feel alive again, and for that they have my undying love and gratitude.
IN LOVING MEMORY

Thank you so much for the letters and the pictures. It just doesn’t seem right to see just some of the guys and not Capt. Phill; we all loved him just like he was one of the family. He will be sorely missed. I only pray that the boys recover and can captain the Cornelia Marie. That would be fitting don’t you think? My best wishes for all the Deadliest Catch viewers and the crews, I love them all. Please keep the show going. I just lost my son and we always watched it together. It helps having a part of our lives I can still enjoy. Love to you all.

All the Captains of ” Deadliest Catch” are hero’s, and Capt. Phil is one of the best!
As a former Atlantic gill net fisherman from Florida ( way back in the 60′s and 70′s), I know a little of the thrill, intoxication, and danger of offshore fishing, the love you have to possess, the addiction, and feeling of freedom-yet enslavement of the trade. I wish the best for each and every one of the crews, and Captains of the fleet GODspeed, and safe fishing all your days. And for the family of captain Phil, may GOD’s healing touch and presence be with you always, forever watchful over your lives. From a faithful fan and avid follower, GOD bless!

he worked hard enough to be where he was,he was rough looking but he had a big heart, his two boys were his life and you could tell from the show so I can only imagine what he was like after the cameras stopped rolling.wish the captains and there crew could come to newfoundland and labrador canada to visit I would be the first person to but a ticket, love you all, your hard working people but remember family first and money last, cause without family you have nothing.take care to all the deadliest catch crew……….

My kids and I have been watching the show for years and this year,at the beginnig of the new season, our local TV listings magazine let slip that Capt. Phil was going to pass sometime during the season. Consequently we have been watching every episode and preview wondering when it would happen. It’s been heartbreaking but also we’ve gotten a whole new appreciation for him from watching for so long knowing what was coming. So many comments were made between the sons and their dad that made us cringe but also many that made us cheer when they made up after a fight. It sure changes your perspective!
We started missing Phil before the season was barely started!
To Jake and Josh, we’re so sorry for your loss! Hang in there and know that a lot of people truly care about you!
And Jake please, please get the help you promised your Dad that you would. To honor his memory. (I hope that wasn’t naggy, I’m just a mom at heart.)

I have been a big fan of the show since it first aired. I have children the same ages as Josh and Jake. I recently lost my father to suicide and my heart breaks for the boys. I know the pain that they must feel. I think of them all the time and pray that God gives them the strength they need to survive the loss of their father. You could see the pride and love in his eyes when he spoke of them and they are fortunate to have the show to look back on and see their father. May God be with all of the crew, family, and friends.
