125 mph Winds hit Dutch Harbor; F/V Cornelia Marie okay

adutch_harbor_wind_storm

According to our friend in Dutch Harbor and the Anchorage Daily News; “Winds as high as 125 mph toppled a 110-foot gantry crane at a shipping facility in Dutch Harbor.”  Nobody was hurt, thank goodness.  I guess there was rumors about the F/V Cornelia Marie sustaining damage, but as you can see in this photo – she is resting fine tied up along a few other crabbers in port.  The guys are home with their families for Christmas.  They will return to Dutch Harbor and get ready for Opilios in January.

According to ADN report:  “Unalaska city roads chief Jim Dickson described the storm in an e-mail Saturday. “A few roofs were blown away, a mud slide across a road; but generally most of town made it through with only minor damage,” he wrote.”

    Missy,
Thanks for ordering a t-shirt and for your support of Cornelia Marie. For the past few years, Discovery Channel has started the new season mid April. They don’t give the actual premiere date until sometime in February. Meanwhile, the boys go back fishing for Opilios Jan. 15th.

I’ll keep everyone updated through the website, facebook and twitter.

    Thanks.
    Morgan

Hi guys, just wanted to wish you gusy a great season in Jan. And thought I would let you know that the crane that fell over was acutally built in 1980 and was acutally built by my dad he worked for APL and was just getting married when all that was being built. Thought you would like a little bit of history. Good Luck this season. God Bless!

Morgan: Thanks for keeping us updated on the C/M and crew. Between your site, Dutch Harbor Dirt and Phil’s FaceBook and MySpace pages – the fans are kept informed…I’m in Illinois and can’t even imagine 125 mph winds. Here 65 mph is enough to drive in. How does Phil keep the yacht upright in those winds when their fishing? Quite a captain! Again thanks and have a wonderful Holiday. Lin

Glad F/V Cornelia Marie is OK. Because F/V CM has more mechanical breakdowns than the other vessels, I worry more about that ship than the others in the fleet. Prayers are with you to catch all the crab and stay safe!!

Your boat is my favorite. Is there anything you ever need for going out to sea? Do you take home-baked cookies for example? Do you have a way fans can “support” your crew? Have you considered boat tours? Thanks for all you do!

I spent two years traveling the world while working aboard a ship. I remember sitting in the harbor watching these massive cranes. It’s simply hard to believe that a storm can be strong enough to topple one. Scary stuff indeed.

I too am really glad that nobody was hurt. It could have been quite a bad scene. Gets you wondering about all the near-accidents that are averted compared to the ones that happen. Oh well, thanks for the story even though it’s old.

Wow, the those photos show the true extent of the winds. I still can’t imagine just how strong they must have been, but I guess a rough idea about how much damage they have caused. I’m really really glad not a single person was hurt. Everybody just got a whole lot of luck – hope they realize it.
