A new year brings new changes on the FV Cornelia Marie. I wrote about our King Crab season here, where you can read about our past crew which included skipper Derrick Ray. Now, the Cornelia Marie has a new captain – Tony Lara. But, Tony is not new to the Cornelia Marie. He fished on the CM from 1991 to 2000 as deckhand and engineer, mostly under Captain Phil. He’s a good friend of the family and a respected crab fisherman. Tony was a good friend to Phil, as they spent years fishing together.
We also have some new faces on the back deck. Our engineer Steve Ward and deck boss Freddie will be going to other fishing vessels. Steve will be working on the FV Fierce Allegiance, skippered by Tony LaRussa and Freddie will be joining the crew of the FV Wizard. Remaining on board will be Jake, Josh and Ryan. The two new crew members joining the CM family are Dale Pruitt and Troy Huls, who’s known as “Chief”. I went to school with the Pruitt family, with his brother Chad being a classmate of mine. These two guys have about 50 years of experience between them and we’re glad to have them on the Cornelia Marie.

The crew has changed then.Phill harris has died he is still going to be that person steeming out the boat out from dock and in to the dock,still going to be finding them crabs and smelling their FARTS !! he he.Phill is still the captain of that boat and he aint going to leave till he smells the sea air and the farts and he wont leave coz thats were he died and he will aways live there.Oh and i dint think there was going to be a new Captian coz Phill leafted the boat to the boys

I cannot imagine him on the Wizard, and truth to tell I’m wondering at his reasons for leaving. Maybe all the rumors about the boys being unstable are true??? I love the Harris boys but it wasn’t just them that made me a fan of the CM. I will definitely be following Freddie on the Wizard now, although I still wish the best for the CM.

I’m sad to see that Freddie and Steve are leaving. My guess would be that they just can’t be on the boat without Phil there. Phil was someone they knew and trusted well. I know that I wouldn’t want to have to get used to yet another new captain. While I have no doubt that Tony Lara will do a great job, I can’t blame Freddie and Steve for leaving. It’s probably super hard for them to be on the CM without a Harris in the skipper’s chair. Like I said, this is just what I think. Morgan’s the only one on this site that would really know the answers and he’ll tell us when the time is right.
I want to wish the best of luck to Jake, Josh and the rest of the CM’s new crew. Fair winds and following seas. Tony- you’ve got huge shoes to fill and I don’t think anyone envies your position right now. I pray that you’ll be able to get on the crab early and maintain it through the season. Jake- keep on that road to recovery. We as fans want to see either you or Josh in that skipper’s seat soon. We love you all!

Freddie probably left coz of the fact phils not there no more and felt it wouldn’t be the same…fair enough,but Freddie,listen to the people,why the bloody hell the wizard,i agree totally Keith’s prob the worst skipper out there and there’s no way i’d ever work for the douche bag….

Wow…Freddie went to the Wizard? Of all the boats to pick. Keith’s a jerk 99% of the time (every once in a while he has a human moment). I can understand being depressed on the CM and missing Phil, but I can’t understand voluntarily going to work for Keith. Hope Keith knows what a gem he got.

Wow what the heck is Freddie thinking. Can’t believe he abondoned the CM for the Wizard. Well I guess he had to do what he had to do, maybe he just couldn’t bear the memories. But the Wizard. (big sigh!)
Really, the Wizard? OK, Josh, time to step it up and do whatever it takes to become captain. Otherwise, might as well sell your interest and get out altogether. Jake can’t hack it so don’t expect him to step up. So, so disappointed in Freddie! Would have expected him to stay on and look after Phil’s boys if he was really the man he was shown to be on the show last year. But Keith, come on, douche bag is too good for him. All his “grief” last year was almost too much to stomach.
The CM will not be the same without Freddie – he was the CM too! He belongs to the boat like Phil and the boys!
I’m sure it was a hard decision for Freddie and Steve but I’m guessing it was a financial decision. Phil’s gone and I’m sure they have their families to consider. I wish them both the best!
Freddie went with the money – He isn’t in the best of hands but he won’t be bothered either if he does the job he’s always done. As far as the Harris brothers, only Josh needs to keep his head clear. Jake is spiraling downward out of control. Josh needs to stop letting it affect him and let Jake go emotionally. Otherwise it will affect his function on board and he’ll get fired or someone will get hurt.
That sucks that Steve and Freddy aren’t on the CM! I can’t wait to see what the new season has in store for us and I wish all F/V the best of luck and hope for a safe return:)

Maybe staying on the CM would’ve been to hard for him. Emotionally. It may not seem right to everybody, but I totally understand it. While I wish he was still on the CM, I want those guys to do what makes them the happiest. I love Freddie and have a HUGE amount of respect for him. And at the very least, him being on The Wizard, will allow us to still see him. I miss Phil, and season 7 of Deadliest Catch is going to be rough, but Im still excited to see it.
Maybe they were let go because they can’t afford their salaries. I doubt Freddie would just leave. I bet they had to let him go and hire cheaper. Don’t know what they’re gonna do without an engineer though.

Like so many others, I’m just sickened to hear that Freddie has gone to the Wizard though I’m sure it tickles Keith to death….now maybe people will actually watch the show when it includes him instead of using that time to go to the bathroom or get a snack. God help him if he or his little Mouse treat Freddie as badly as they have some others. Not sure they could handle the backlash as it would all but guarantee their being ditched from the show.
It maybe that Freddie just found it to difficult to work on the CM with Phil gone. You could also say he stepped aside so the Harris men could learn on their own how to handle the deck. In the end I hope all the fishermen much luck and safety this crabbing season.
Well…changes must happen, unfortunately.

Freddie is family he cannot leave the CM! the CM will not be the same ….while it is sad to see him leave the CM at least we will still see him on the show…..but the CM will not be the same..

I do hate to see the family break up. I was hoping Freddie would take hand witth the boys and carry them through the first year at least without their dad. Steve was a great person and will be missed. I know Freddie was devastated when our Captain passed, so I do understand and wish him the very best where he is going. Stand your ground Freddie don’t take any crap from Keith. WELCOME new members of our beloved Cornelia Marie. Our arms are always open to the ones to help out and carry on Captain Phils love. Hey The CM should had gotten Russell since we haven’t seen him since last King crab season when he was on Wild Bill’s boat. Russ maybe a slacker but he did add a little comedy relief to the show. Freddie going to the Wizard is shocking! All I have to say regarding that is.. Keith and mouse better hold on cause its about to get crazy!
Distubing news indeed. This can only mean that the future of CM in more than unstabil. The guys probably want a more stabil boat to work on having familys to suport and all that. Everyone has been waiting for news of CM’s future the whole year but nothing permanent has been told. Kinda strange to me. Who wants to work on a boat where every season is a question mark?

I think it is more of a question of money. They said before that they lost some of their quota because Captain Phil died. The Wizard has a high quota and makes money like the FV CM did, so I think it is nothing more than Economics. Good luck Freddie, see you on the show.
I am so glad Freddie got off the CM. Keith is a great guy and he and Freddie have no issue at all. Steve, too. They deserve to work where they feel safe.
Rumor was that Josh was going to fish on the Northwestern with Sig since Edgar is taking this season off. Jake still not being in a clean state just should not be on that boat. Are they waiting for someone to die so they can boost ratings?? What about none of the repairs that did not get done.

Well, it looks like the CM has decided to make some changes for opie crab season. Derrick Ray was the life saver captain to get the CM crew past the loss of Phil and finish their 2010 opie season, then get them thru the 2010 king crab season. It had to be pretty rough going thru those seasons without Phil on the boat, but from what I read, they got thru it knowing that Phil will be proud of them. Freddie going to the Wizard was probably his own decision. He’s been on the CM with Cap Phil for years, and my guess is that after going thru king crab season without Phil on board, it was pretty hard on him. He needed a change, a fresh start, and a chance to clear his brain. But, he needs to watch it around Cap Keith, tho, because Keith will not take any bullcrap from anyone on his boat.
My prayers are with the whole crab fishing fleet as they set out to catch these opies and make their quotas for 2011. Prayers for good weather on most days, full pots, being safe and well. May God lead you and guide you!

PS: Does anyone know about Jake Anderson’s dad and if anyone has found him yet? It’s been a year since we all found out about Jake’s dad, and we all have been praying for him and his family. Also, is Jake still with the Northwestern? Hope so! He needs to stay busy. One other question: Did Jake Harris FINALLY get off of drugs and living a clean & sober life? Praying for him! CM
I must say that all these changes are just a little bit too much to handle all at the start of one season. I thought it was going to be hard enough watching the show without phil being the captain of the boat anymore. Now to finf out that freddie has gone to the Wizard. Josh and Freddie were just as close as brother’s. So what happened? What caused that decision. Then the engineer is leaving? Now they are bringing on 2 new guys, who deserve a chance just like everyone else, let’s face it, nobody likes change. The hardest thing about the changes this season will be freddie not being there. I can’t wrap my arms around what could possibly have happened to cause this change. We really won’t know until the season starts. Either way, lets just hope the Wizard realizes what a good worker they have in Freddie.
Love is love, business is nusiness. I will miss seeing Freddie on the CM, but I’m glad he’s still fishing. Unlike a lot of people, I don’t mind Keith.
The only certainty in life is change. We’ve all gone thru the hardest part, losing Phil. After that, I’m just glad I can keep up with the guys and the fleet.
Addiction of any kind is a heavy cross to bear. As the family of an addict in recovery, my heart goes out to Josh. You have to hang in there, kiddo, and know that relapse is part of recovery. If my dad could do it, and my kid IS doing is, your brother can too. I love all you guys, and I’m praying everyone has a safe, profitable trip out and back.

Freddie and Steve left because they did not feel safe on the CM and because they were disgusted over Josh and Jake abusing their power as Phil’s sons.
As someone in the know, I can tell everyone that these two kids are out of control and take for granted the fact that Phil was their father. Everyone knows this, but no one says it out of respect for Phil’s legacy. These two would rather smoke a joint and sleep than work and keep each other safe. Would you want to stay on a boat where you felt your personal safety was threatened because someone would rather put their recreational time first? I doubt it.

Wow!!!!! What a change up. Just like the Bering Sea everything is always rolling with the changes. I will TRULY miss Phil. When he passed I was ready to ditch the whole show but The Time Bandit and the Northwestern were the saving graces. Now Jonatthan and Andy have had a falling out with the Discovery Channel. I don’t know about Sig. Keith is just I’m sorry plain out annoying. And Bill he is ok but lacks personality (and humor). I loved Phil and his antics and sayings and the Hilstrand guys and their fireworks and Sig and ALL of the practical jokes. I don’t see that happening with the new fleet. I don’t know maybe I will be surprised. I hope so. I have been watching since the beginning and don’t want to give up now. Everyone be safe and have a great season!

Shocked over the changes! Especially Freddie going to the F/V Wizard??? But, none of us knows the entire story behind all of these events on the CM. All of us loved Captain Phil and don’t want to see an end to the CM. Therefore, I wish Josh and Jake much success, good health and peace of mind! if anyone has read the deadliest catch desperate hours this tony is mentioned in there a couple times. i wish him the best of luck. tony, if jake needs his butt kicked, please do so. that boy on a short leash. on another subject, these folks who are upset because freddie and steve left the CM. although it is sad that they are moving on, loyalty and altruism are usually not accepted as payment by the holders of car notes and mortgages. I would venture to say that life on the wizzard will not be nearly as laid back and fun as it was on the cm. dealing with a captain who leads by authority instead of concensus will be a shock to freddie’s system too.

The big difference I see between keith and the cm is this. keith is in this for the money. he runs his boat like a fortune 500 country. his superstitions aside, he uses modern technology and management practices to get the most out of the crab season. this makes a lot of money for his crews, but it is a pretty cut and dried environment. with phil at the helm, the cm was great because of the leadership style of phil. he treated his men with respect and this was returned to him. his way of doing business is sadly fading in to the mists of the distant past.

Hate to see those two go, although we’ll at least see Freddie on the Wizard, and its cool to hear the Fierce Allegiance is still crabbing. Anyway, why all this hate for Capt. Keith? He had a little dispute with Captain Johnathan that they both blew out of proportion, move on, they did. Keith may seem to be a hard ass at times, however they all have at one time or another. It’s part of what makes the show interesting, all the different styles of leadership each boat has.
Just to put in my ten cents- God bless these men that fish! They will always need this. I think Captain Phil would say the same thing. Plain, simple & right to the point.

How are you “in the know”? You do realize there is a majority shareholder in the boat, right? Cornelia Marie herself? I don’t think that the firing of a Captain would get by without her approval since she is the majority owner. I really would hate to think that Josh and Jake are on some ridiculous rampage. I seriously doubt you are as in the know as you think you are because I just have a hard time believing that Cornelia Marie would fire a guy just because Josh and Jake wanted to. She has to take in consideration the business of the boat. I say stop starting all these rumors about what happened and wait for Morgan to let us know what’s going on. I think he more than anyone on this site knows what’s really behind everything.
That being said, we can all speculate, but we should not accuse anyone. No accusing Keith of poaching, no accusing the boys of causing all this. We can even speculate, as I do, that it was just too hard to remain on that boat without Phil but we can’t say anything with certainty until Morgan says what’s what.
Also…where did the rumor about Josh going to the NW happen? I’m a member of that fansite and there is nothing there that suggests it. At least not that I’ve read.

Having met Keith and Monte, I can tell you they are straight up professional, courteous and know how to run a business. When you are out on the Bering Sea, there is NO room for ANYTHING but remaining professional, staying safe, and getting the job done, and get your crew home. Those who bash him, don’t know him. Freddie is a hard worker, he’ll do well on the Wizard. I’m sorry we won’t see Steve again….he has my absolute respect, as the man who did all he could to save the life of his friend and captain. I had the pleasure of meeting him too.
With Steve gone, Josh may be stepping into the engineer role to some extent. He has done it in the past on other ships. Based upon something Sig said, the route tot he captain’s chair starts on the deck, goes through the engine room, and ends behind the wheel. This may be that second step for Josh.
RIP CAPTAIN PHIL. may the new crew always remember you and your winning ways!!

I attended the “An evening with the Captains” and Jonathan stated that the reason he was so angry at Keith and, what caused last seasons blow up, was because Keith turned him in to authorities, behind his back, because Jonathan was doing burnouts with his motorcycle. He said to the live audience that Keith had no integrity. It didn’t have anything to do with stealing crew members. I hope that Keith shows more respect to his crew this year. His style doesn’t seem to inspire loyalty.
That said…I hope the CM does well this year. We get so caught up with these families and only wish them a good season and to return home safe. Unfortunately, for me, DC will never be the same with Captain Phil gone. After watching these guys since the beginning, it will be hard for me to see someone else in the wheel house. My wish is only good things for the fleet.
i have no doubt that keith is a nice guy. for sure he’s an excellent cook. i made his baked alaska and it beat the pants off the one they tried to pawn off on us ignoran passengers on the cruise i was on last summer. all that aside, my problem with keith is this. i had a boss who reminds me so much of him. we never knew if the nice labrador retriever or the rabid wolverine was in the office. think keith has a similar personality. that’s just my thought and i know we shouldn’t make assumptions…. anyway, i love the show and am especially fascinated by the interactions of the men and the leadership of the captains. god bless all and just thing only three months to go.

I, too, am saddened to see Freddie leave the CM. My guess is that it was probably an economic reason. With Phil not being in the captain’s chair for opie season and with Derrick running the CM for king crab season, the CM most likely did not meet their quotas which means the boat is not making money, and hence the deckhands suffer. Freddie has responsibilities and as we all know, he owns a restaurant which is most likely financed by his deckhand wages. With that being said, do I like Capt. Keith? No. But one thing about Capt. Keith is that he always (and I mean always) respected Lenny who was supposed to retire. Knowing Freddie’s worth ethic, it is my hope that Capt. Keith will learn to rely on Freddie and treat him with the respect that he deserves. To now see Freedie again on TV would only add to the sorrow of missing Capt. Phil. I’m at least glad that we will still be seeing him on Discovery. And, I doubt sincerely if this means that Freddie loves Josh and Jake any less. It is purely a matter of making a salary.
It’s going to be an interesting season so watch… I’m going to miss the old crew of the CM together but changes happen all the time and life just has to go forward. I just want everyone to come home safely and much luck to Freddie,Steve, Josh, Jake and Ryan and the Cornelia Marie in whatever the future has in store for them.

I can barely wait for the new show to air. I have never felt this way about any t.v. show in my life. I an glued to my set and find myself to be madly in love (lust) with both the guys (Josh and Jake). I have dreams of them both and my heart goes out to both especially Jake as I know what he goes thru on a personal basis, I too am someone who enjoys the wild side and the feelings that come with using. I wish both the best and they will always be my fantasy man as I am turned on every time I look at them. The sexiest men on earth and their job just adds to the whole picture. True strong hard working men. I am smitten. the biggest fan!

Anyone that has no familiarity with the people, boats or industry represented in this show really doesn’t have an opinion on the real reasons behind decisions and changes that ultimately affect the show.
I can’t believe ANYONE would call a man down for calling in authorities on a drug user that was on his boat.
As the captain, a man is responsible for every aspect of the goings-on aboard a boat. Guess what? If there were an accident, it’s HIS you know what on the line.
HE is supposed to know every detail about the men aboard the boat and if he discovers illicit drug use, he must do something about it. Many look the other way, to my knowledge, as they themselves have crutches to prop themselves up.
There is zero tolerance policy in the industry, but honestly, marijuana use is pretty common as are other, stronger drugs.
The personnel changes and the other decisions are driven by factors that are not easily apparent just through watching the show. There will be explanations given and often they are not correct (just in my observation thus far from both sides of the screen).
Tough to speculate, and again, this is an extreme environment. People that are straight-up fantastic buddies on land can turn into a beastly-mean guy in the captains seat. Then again, he makes money. If he hurts your feelings, you either deal with it or don’t.
The show is for entertainment. Fishing is a serious living. You get to watch and your opinions are way secondary to the real deal, they only matter to the people producing the show; they have the make the show work around the job. I think a lot has gone on around the job for your entertainment which is considered on the DC boats only.
There’s the real thing, then there is the DC show. Two vaguely similar animals, but what you don’t know could fill volumes.

Wow. Freddie was the spark that fueled the CM crew. A man of few words. But when he spoke, he was always worth listening to. His advise to Josh last season was priceless and no doubt life altering. I wish him well on the Wizard.
Oh, and don’t forget that most of these personalities are long-term substance abusers and addictive in every definition of the word.
Fishing is itself like gambling, which is an undeniable addiction.
It makes an exciting show…but every one of those people is not who the Discovery Channel has painted them as.
There are literally hundreds of men like Capt. Phil out there, still fishing, or in the not so distant past.
It is certainly interesting to view the many passionate opinions posted in response to the change in crew. While it is sad to see some leave, it’s not like things would have ever been the same without Phil anyway. I’m glad the boys want to continue the legacy and hope the youngest has conquered his demons.
I respect all of these guys, all captains and crew, since they perform a very dangerous profession enduring fatigue, danger, family issues, and ever changing relationships amongst themselves. I imagine it is very difficult to have a “life” when you spend so much time away from home. Sure, the money is good, but the risk is great.
I like all the captains for one reason or another but Phil was my favorite – he was raw, honest, passionate and open and those are great qualities. Sure, they’re all a little rough around the edges, but you must admit, the responsibility each captain has for all the men on his crew is great when it only takes one wave can to end it all, permanently.
It also appears that much of the world watches Deadliest Catch and I can’t believe the Emmy’s have snubbed them for so long – DC is the ultimate reality show – no acting, no staged drama, and fabulous camera men who risk it all just as the crew does.
I hope I’m not being presumptuous when I say that respect is more than earned by these guys and I look forward to the next season.
My condolences to the CM family and may Captain Phil rest in peace. He will be missed.

1st time to join any fan page, lol Main reason is to follow the CM and other boats as I have learned how to do that and that this site exists. As mentioned above by Laleela I agree, I am not a fisherman, however part of growing up was on the N.Oregon Coast so you get to know some of the fishermen & know the stories good & bad & sad. The show is fine when it came out I liked the idea because I remember my Dad telling me of his brother who was a fisherman in AK and that my cousin was also a Fisher/Craber so this show DC is interesting & I realize (and share with my children) the reality of what its about. I bet most of the Crews of these boats find the DC camera’ crews another person to worry about at sea, safety. And may distract them or get in the way from time to time. There are some who prefer to stay off camera (camera shy) but they are not at sea on these specific boats just to be on TV’s DC. They are glad to have a Job, and earn some $$ doing what they know best even tho its a very dangerous job. Alot of Fisher’s feel more at home on the Sea than on land. So as I am new to this site some of the comments are interesting and I must say to turn this into a soap tv is a very bad idea(to producers). Let them Crab and do it in a safe way so they can earn their $$$ and Go home Alive & Safe.
I having finally been able to get cable again I can watch the show, been watching the rukue reruns of the all the seasons to see how it all began. My interest is it will be the 1st time we can follow a boat my cousin is on. And so we can hope / pray for their safety as well as the whole crab fleet. I am glad the Coasties are available to help.
And I know all the Crews each have memories of a lot of friends & family that were lost to the sea. So just a sobering thought, let them work, crab and they will be who they are naturally. But the majority of what they go through TV land will never see, nor fully comprehend. But it is educational as to the dangers all fishermen go through so we can eat fish / crabs etc. I respect them, honor their courage. And personally never plan going on the deep sea, I like the mountains of Utah I now live in. Miss Oregon’s Coastal rain tho.:O)

I want to wish Josh and Jake a good year. Losing your father may be the hardest thing you gone through. But caring on fishing is something would of wanted. Always remeber what he taught you. Your father is always going to be with you. His spirt will always be out on the sea where he loved to be. My god bless you on you 2011 fishing and be with your crew on this trip. Thank you guys for sharing your father with us. it was a pleasure to watch such a great man.

Glad the boat is in working order and fully staffed but really shocked that Freddy left. He and Phil seemed so very close and we all know what a &*#$ Capt. Keith is. I started watching deadliest catch with my family when i lived in arkansas with my dad and my dad died i stopped for a year moved to michigan and started back up again so i know what the boys are going though i miss my dad every day

(I know about Sig from the Northwestern and Johnathan & Andy from the Time Bandit leaving the show…AND…About D/C’s $3 million law-suit against the Hilstands.) If D/C isn’t coming back…It’ll be a damned shame! You guys ALL work so hard!

I agree with SweetLinda 100%. Who would want to work with that loser?? I thought Freddie was practically part of the Harris family but I guess he’s a traitor. It looks like the Wizard isn’t on the new season so if the crew is also paid by Discovery (which I have to assume they are), I guess he’ll be making less money to work for an untrustworthy jerk. Also, I just watched the video of the arrogant idiot who took over for for Phil (Ray) yelling at Steve Ward so I would understand him leaving and maybe the jerk did something similar with Freddie. Only thing is that the CM has a new captain this season so if he was the reason, it doesn’t make sense. That guy Ray is a real jerk, though. It almost seems like he’s trying hard to start fights. He was bashing Sig (who I love) and seems to just talk tough to get air time or attention. LOSER!
I just commented a minute ago but noticed I was wrong on something. I didn’t think that The Wizard was going to be included in Season 7 but I was wrong. Sorry. I didn’t see Keith in the commercial and figured since nobody really likes him, maybe he had been cut. I looked online and the Wizard is in this coming season.
I also forgot to say something in my previous post. I mentioned that moron Ray Derrick bashing Sig’s fishing skills but forgot to say that he also claims to have helped Phil out in the past. He made it sound like Phil couldn’t have done it without him. Please! I know these guys look out for each other but the way he said it was obnoxious. Phil and Sig are (were, in Phil’s case) 2 great fishermen and more importantly, great men. They both talked about how much they love fishing but they know what’s really important and aren’t shy about saying it, like real men. This idiot who has many years less experience than them is trash talking them?! It’s a clear sign of low self-esteem. People who have confidence in themselves and their abilities don’t need to put other people down to make themselves feel better or to impress other people. I’m glad they got a new captain for season 7.

Keith let go of Russ last year so I think Freddie is just doing what he loves to do FISH.
Guys work on a boat for a couple of reasons. If your new you get on whatever boat will take you for the most part. Seasoned guys work for a skipper that they trust to make them money. Freddie and Steve may have left due to the new (2) skippers on the CM. They may have not trusted these new guys.

Poor Freddie. Going to work for that feckless weasel Keith on the Wizard must be hard. The only thing I can think is that Freddy is going to make a lot of money. After all. Keith has all of Phil’s old pot-plots in his computer because he used to follow Phil around and set pots on top of Phil’s. Perhaps Freddie feels like he’ll make more money on Wizard now that Keith can steal all of Phil’s grounds. I am betting Keith fired Freddie near the end of opie season so he doesn’t have to pay him a full share. It would be typical of weasel-Keith.

There is obviously a problem between Derrick & Steve as well as Jake’s bad habit of disappearing before they leave for king crab everytime! I would pods test Jake everytime he disappeared.

Aren’t we all soooo happy to pass judgement on the people we watch do a job 98% of the world couldn’t do. Look we all loved Capt. Phil, I met him & the boys just before he passed away, I was one of the lucky people. But we need to remember the following: what we are seeing happen months ago.2. This is their lives not OURS 3. None of us know everything that takes place on the boats, we see what other people choose to show. We will always love Phil, Jake & Josh. Us bashing their decisions isn’t supporting them its bashing them. What if they sat in judgement of our lives?
If Freddie went to work on the Wizard, I am sure he had good reason. He loved Phil and I know he loved the boys, but maybe he is looking out for his own financial well being. Let’s face it, he has a family to support and who knows what will happen to the CM. Whatever the reason, I am sure it was not an easy decision for him to make. I wish him all the best.
I agree that the comment that Phil is dead was harsh, but what if Derrick had been told over & over “phil wouldn’t have done that” OR “phil would have done it another way” OR “phil would have said this or that” what if that’s all Steve had been saying to him? Yup, miss Phil though I cringed everytime they showed him smoking and drinking. His (x)wife put it best when she said you can only abuse your body like that for so long. Wish the boys all the best and hope their grandfather is helping to guide them. I feel the same about Sig. Love the guy (on the show) but geese man, stop smoking!
Theose guys in the coast guard..their studs and they rock. They’re the saviors for all the fishermen. I think they have the most dangerous jobs.

Jake and Josh stay strong!! I lost my mom Feb 8 and she was just 47 years old. Almost killed me, I also got into the oxys pretty bad but with suboxone have been able to get my life back again. That new guy who took Phils place should have been kicked off the boat before it left Dutch Harbor for that ” Phil is dead” remark. I would have stung that guy up by his balls for saying something like that. Disappointed to read that Freddie is leaving the Cornelia, and even more so that it’s to the Wizard. He’s probably the hardest working guy on any deck in the Bering Sea. I guess Keith accomplished what he tried doing to the Time Bandit; stealing crew members.
When you was with a good captain for years and they pass away it would be hard to deal with to be on the same boat and have someone else be your captain. Especially with someone who wants to be an asshole.
Anybody that has seen the crab count at the end of the season would understand why Freddie went to the Wizard. The deckhaands average more than the others shown. Keith may be over the top but his boat is bigger, faster and therefore safer. Plus say what you will, he is an experienced old salt of a very dangerous sea.

Just watching the 2 hour 1st episode and have to wonder why Jake felt the need to wear shades on his return to the CM after going AWOL for 2 1/2 hours?.
He looked very dodgy when still wearing them below decks in near darkness while the captain was bollocking the engineer.

I’ve just heard that Freddie Maugatai has left the CM for the Wizard. Am deeply saddened. He was a father figure to the boys and gave some of the best (in broken English)advice to Josh before Phil’s death that could be ever be given. I am not sure that there is any hope left for the CM. I watch with trepidation.
The Cornelia Marie will have its problems. The boys just dont have all the kinks worked out. Patience is a virtue. Give them a chance. Josh,Jake,and Ryan, dont give up! I agree with Debbie and we should all relax on Captain Derrick. I also agree he was harsh about the Capt. Phil comment but if it were a big deal then I think Josh would have ripped into him for it. We also do not yet know why Freddie jumped ship to the Wizard until hopefully the end of the season when the round table talk with the Captain’s happen – I’m sure it will all be discussed then. Steve had it in for Capt. Derrick from day ONE! If those looks could kill! Where the heck is the KODIAK at? Also, what do you guys think about the comment Keith said about Johnathan in the last episode??? I don’t think the Hilstrand boys are going to like that at all! Personally I’ve been down the bad side of Pain Pills. It was the hardest fight of my Life, it took years of rise and fall for me to finally break free. Now I’m on my way to finishing school and moving on as an Apprentice Welder. I know for a fact, for Jake to be clean when they piss tested him, he wasn’t using hard narcotics.
When someone is trying to recover from addiction, the LAST thing you need is it being thrown in your face at every turn. Praising someone for there achievements will be much more benificial then dwelling on their mistakes.
One more thing, I think everyone that actually knows will tell you, Marijuana is a positive thing when treated with Respect, and it was a God send in my recovery. I’m not saying it is for everyone, anything used with misintentions will not have a positive effect and it’s not for Kids. But for someone who respects it can be very soothing for mind, body, and soul. If it’s not for you I ask please be understanding of those for who it is. And Please don’t mix us up with those who exdploit it, abuse it, and use it as a tool for their own malice intentions.

You know the Fierce Allegiance was a regular boat for king crab season one: derby style. I’m a bit behind in the series but I hated Derrick not captain derrick just derrick from the beginning and still just can’t believe phil’s dead. I am almost ok with Keith. Monte is better loved the candy bar thing, but Johnathan is beastly. I prefer Andy but hey, it’s the same boat. I fell in love with Sig and the NW from day 1 ( probably because I saw it first) but still like bill. Russel was Ok. Probably missing the TB SANA. I mean why put a Dana in a crab boat, Especially when you have to walk on deck to get to it? Speaking of boats we haven’t seen in forever what happened to the SEA STAR? I know if he’s strong enough to do it I can as well. my only problem is he had family to help him. I don’t. Also, every time I see a picture of phil or see him on t.v I literally cry. I couldn’t understand why Derrick Ray decided to go for Blue Crab, why not go for the sure thing Red Crab. CM has always had good catches of Red Crab, not to mention the distance they had to travel to get to the Blue Crab grounds. What a waste of time & fuel. I’m glad to know the boys fired him, I never liked him at all, he was just a big “Blow Hard”. I’m sorry they had to lose 2 of their best employees because of this guy. They will be missed, I can’t believe Freddie wants to work for Bi-Polor Keith.
I would like to state that it is difficult to take over any leadership position never mind a position that was once a fathers. Derrick Ray tried his best, but one thing he didn’t earn was the respect of the crew. The decision for blue Crab was a long shot and that was explained to you all before the trip even started. Instead of sitting back for so long, something should have been said earlier. Red Crab should have been fished first and then the long shot afterwards just to try. Yes, there are windows of opportunity. But sometimes those windows just don’t clearly happen when expected.
You will never find another Capt Phil! But, I would rather see josh in at the helm before jake. Jake I am still unsure if he can handle the pressure. Specially after watching him and how he acts and reacts. As a person who is a dept leader, people need to repsond to situations not react. reacting will lead you down the road of disaster!
Impossible spot for Derrick Ray (or anyone) to sit in Capt. Phil’s still-warm captain’s seat. The problem was not Derrick – it was a crew not prepared to listen to a new voice. Capt. Phil got where he was the old-fashioned way. He earned it. It will be very interesting to see if his kids are willing to earn it. I’m betting no . . . . . . . there will be new ownership sooner rather than later. Also, best wishes to Freddie as he moves to the Wizard.

I only know crab fishing from watching the show and I’m a die hard dc watcher, that said Derrick Ray and the cm had HUGE shoes to fill after the loss of capt Phil. Derrick Ray his second season in needed to EARN the respect of the crew an move forward from there and not force respect from the crew from the get go, the Harris brothers should have pressed harder to learn by having the capt helping them learn, that also being said I KNOW that the Harris brothers WILL be a success in the future!!!!! I never like talking bad about people without reason. But what that Derrick Ray did was so naive. He attempted to actually use them as tools to gain power. How? By degrading them and humiliating them on front of the cameras and of course, the rest of the crew. He is responsible for some crew leaving fearing the loss of leadership. And worst, he tried to banckrupt them and perhaps overtake the operation.
I am a trained corporate managements and finaces forensics Investigator and free lance manager, and I read his intentions right out. Shame on him. If I was this men I would get me legal advice and law suit him over the losses. I’m sure Mr. Derrick dont know, that when you hold such positions you liable to legal prosecution over loses. Good luck to them and hope they make it out. Hopefuly one of them decide to go to maritime training, as they can take most courses online 3 to 6 credits at a time. Interesting to read all of the different comments left by people with regards to the first part of the crabbing season and having Derrick Ray as the new skipper of the Cornelia Marie. As someone who has experience with relatives who have struggled with drug issues, let me first of all express my deepest sympathy for all of you who have absolutely no faith in Jake Harris. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Once a drug addict, always a drug addict doesn’t ring true. The boy deserves a chance at redemption, but yet some of you choose to childishly criticize him despite the fact that given all the details surrounding his rehabilitation and how much he loved and respected Phil, and how much he wanted to make his old man proud. Cut the kid some slack, sit back and see how things play out instead of automatically assuming that Jake will not be able to handle skippering the boat. I would have to disagree, especially with the fact that Jake has been the voice of his father, and the boat and crew this entire season so far that’s been aired. In my opinion, he has really stepped up to the plate as partial owner of the Cornelia Marie. With regards to Capt. Derrick Ray, if you all cannot see that man for who and what he is, you must be just like him then. Derrick Ray was a selfish, egotistical, insensitive (pardon my french) prick. He treated those boys like crap the entire season, not to mention the fight he started with the engineer before they even got out of port. That is counter-productive to earning a crew’s respect. And Derrick never earned the crew’s respect due to his attitude and poor decision making. He deserved to be fired, and I believe, only called the cops on Jake out of spite. He should be ashamed of his behavior, and really re-evaluate who he is because he is not someone I would ever want to work under if I were a crabber on that vessel. Looking forward to seeing the Ophelia season with Tony as skipper. Based on this website, it appears that he is a perfect fit for this job, until Jake obtains his skipper license. After Jake Anderson’s blowup on the Northwestern the last week, and his repeated claims that the Hansons will never let him captain the Northwestern, I halfway expect to see him piloting the CM. It sure would be interesting.
Josh nor jake are going to be ready in the near future to captain the CM. They have so much to learn it is going to take alot of years. As far as Jake goes he needs to be tested and if dirty sent right back to rehab. The reason he probably left so quick when the boat docked was to hide something or to avoid being tested for drugs. I’m willing to bet the second he passed his drug test to go fishing he started smoking pot.I bet he took something so he could pass the drug screen he had to pass also. The stuff to do that is available online and easy to get and he looked and acted stoned when he came back from his 21/2 shopping trip. If I were the majority owner of this boat I would require jake to be screened for drugs at randomto keep him honest.
The captain was right, Jake smokin dope could have cost him his license and the ship! He would never had succeeded as capt of CM because the crew was set in their ways with Phil. They fished for blue crab for 8 days and quit, 8 whole days and they quit. If they weren’t catching blues then they could have at least tried red crab and not quit. Do you think after not catching crab for 8 days they would have told Phil they quit? They could have put one of the Hillstrands as captain and they still would have panicked after 8 days of not catching crab. Most captains this season started very slow and had trouble finding crab, their crews didn’t quit. If I were Cornelia or Marie I would either ban Jake from the ship, although being 25% owner I doubt they could, or I would demand random drug tests while at sea. Jakes father was going to kick him off the ship when he caught him stealing pain meds from him, that should tell you ALOT! Derrick (spelling?) didn’t do anything wrong by calling the police on him, I wouldn’t want to be next to a stoner out there.
I really dont know what to say about all this except that my heart is really breaking. its really sad to see all this go down like that.
Derrick was wrong for trying to shift the heat from himself to Jake. They gave Derrick over 3 weeks to catch blues and he failed. He was told the owners were now losing money searching for blues and Derrick didn’t listen. They begged him to start on reds and he REFUSED.It’s not coming out of his pocket, what does he care. For the entire crew to mutiny against the Captain says a lot. I would LOVE to see Derrick apologize to Jake when it is reveled he wasn’t the one smoking pot.

It will be interesting to see how Opie season plays out on TV. From the perspective of the last King Crab show, it’s clear that Jake has an addiction and Josh is probably his enabler. There is no other boat that would take him with his history, so it’s lucky he owns this one. Even so, I’m curious as to what kind of assurance he was able to give the other 75% owners that he wouldn’t be a huge liability risk (insurance, employing a drug user; Coast Guard, losing their license and even the boat). Best wishes to Jake and the family but he put them all in this position, is he willing to step up and get them out?
All I want to add is that I only wish the one who’s weed it is will be a man and step forward.

Well, you can’t be psychically addicted to marijuana & can be mentally addicted to anything. Let’s not forget it is a legal medication in the state of Alaska. My issue with smoking pot on a ship is two fold; one – folks rely on your wits to stay safe, best have them about you – that goes with any pain medication. Two – if what was said is true – losing his fathers legacy & family business over – at best not having a prescription – is unacceptable.

Phil Harris was a party animal. There is no doubt in my mind that marijuana has been smoked on the CM from the get-go.
Being addicted to opiates is completely different than smoking marijuana.
I am a licensed addictions counselor. Do I condone it? No. But I am not a fool either. Rarely does an addict get clean after a quick stint in rehab. If all Jake is doing, is smoking pot after such a tumultuous year, I say congrats.
Laura, when the HALF OWNERS of the boat asked Derrick nicely to stop on the blue and go red because they were losing money and he refused is when most got upset. Josh and Jake make a very intelligent business decision. Derrick refused to accept them as owners and lost them at least $30,000 out of pocket. How many more chances should they have to afford?
Can’t show Derrick for what he is, but Jake is assumed to still be on drugs? He has passed MANY drug tests. What more can he do to prove he’s clean? Jake was right to walk away from the boat like he did.
Mutiny is the crew stating in one voice they have no respect or confidence in the Captain. And that is what they did.

So Laura, I take it you missed the episode where Josh stated they had $150,000 allocated for blue. Derrick was running over $180,000 and they wanted to do red, but he refused. Derrick was causing financial hardship for the F/V. The Harris boys made an intelligent financial decision.

In this ep Derrick says they gave up on blue crab after 8 days, and yet on the Wizard and the Early Dawn they’ve been pulling blanks for 40 days. (They might have said 15 days on NW but I’m not sure.) Discovery wants to get the King season into 8 episodes or whatever, so each boat’s season is stretched or compressed to fit that schedule.
If you think someone else but not Jake was smoking pot on the CM then 10 points for loyalty but minus 50 points for willful blindness. (I wonder if you have kids.) And I’d bet real money that Jake wasn’t only using pot, that’s just the only thing that leaves an odor. You don’t smoke oxycodone. He was dirty and he ran away. Not a good start to filling his Dad’s shoes.
And finally, shame on you for pissing on Phil’s memory by suggesting that Phil would have smoked pot on board the CM while he was fishing. Maybe at home, I don’t know. Stating Josh put the boat at risk is a false accusation. What proof you have he was the one smoking or anyone for that matter? If you watch the crews faces you can tell who was the owner. Odds are Josh took a couple hits, but I would bet it wasn’t his. And he wasn’t the ONLY one who was smoking.

Josh underwent a drug test before they left port. If there was a question as to his sobriety, another test should have been administered DURING the trip. I’m glad that they are getting a new captain. Derrick was not the right guy and I think that was pretty obvious since the very first episode when he got all up in Steve’s face. Not cool. But I’m really glad that they are going to be coming back for another season. What a bummer that Freddie isn’t going to be on there anymore but the Wizard is good too; at least we still get to watch him. Also I just want to point out that Derrick was contradicting himself a lot through out the Blue King Crab trip because he kept on saying that Jake was bringing up the past about his dad but Derrick kept on bringing up the fact that Jake used to do drugs. Get off his back. You can’t hold that against him, he got help. Sheeesh! But the only person who knows the truth about the weed that was supposedly on the boat is them.

Watched the show tonight 5/24/2011 and was very disappointed. I thought that Capt. Ray was being hard on the Harris boys, but after he found the marijuana and showed it to the crew. Everyone denying that they had smoked any of it, and then Jake didn’t even let the CM get docked before he jumped ship and ran to the airport…. to me and this is only my opinion he was guilty… why else would he have done it??? Derrick had a good point about the Marijuana being on the boat at all. I am an older person and he was talking with knowledge not trying to be a jerk like everyone is saying… the consequences could have been catastrophic!!! I am glad that Phil wasn’t able to see what Jake had done, he would have been very disappointed in him also Jake wouldn’t have been smoking Marijuana on the CM in the first place is Phil was there…

i was 18 on a ship smokeing pot and my chief stepped in and told me i was messing up. i was in the US. navy he made a diffrence when you are out at sea you need to know everyone has your back. On a side note I saw on the “Deadliest Catch Chopper” episode of “American Chopper” Jake had mentioned a ride this August in Phil’s honor. My father passed away only days before Phil and after what was thought to be a stunning recovery as well, he loved the show DC and Phil specifically, I would like nothing more than to join the boys on a ride for their dad wearing my dad’s colors, any way to find out when and where the ride will be?
If memory serves, during an earlier season Capt. Phil admitted to have been a drug user in his past. But, there’s a difference between using recreational drugs during your off time and using them while you’re working. I am not advocating drug use of any kind, but just trying to make a point. Additionally, laws have changed and what people used to accept or at least look the other way about then, you can go to prison for today. If you’ll remember, when Jake was discovered by his father stealing pills from him on the CM, his reaction was very harsh, and rightfully so. Phil told Jake to get to rehab and get off his boat when they dock – I think he also said he never wanted to see him again. Granted he cooled off and tried to support his kid later, but, Derrick is not his father and owes him no such compassion. Derrick is correct. If Jake was using drugs on the boat, it not only presented a legal problem for the captain, crew and boat owners, but more importantly it presented a safety issue for everyone on the boat. As captain, he is obligated to investigate the situation. He can’t just turn a blind eye to it. As a friend of Phil’s I think Derrick was trying to help Jake. Assume for a moment that Jake was using again and on board the boat. He’s already admitted to being an addict. If he’s back using again, he’s in some real trouble. Sometimes, it takes a kick in the teeth (figuratively) to get someone’s attention – and it’s time for Jake to wake up. His dad’s not there to pick up the pieces anymore. At any rate, Jake’s behavior is highly suspect. He didn’t look right or sound right. The fact that he bailed off the boat, before it was even docked, and didn’t stay for the off load is not the behavior of an owner, but a spoiled brat caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Jake had the opportunity to prove Derrick wrong, if he was – he should have taken it. If he was wrong, I suspect Derrick would have manned up and apologized. I know Jake didn’t have to submit to a drug test, but why wouldn’t he? If he was clean, the time to prove it was then. Now, there will always be doubt. No, I think he was trying to hide something. Sadly, until Jake is faced with some really harsh consequences, he will continue to go down the wrong path and that path leads no where good. And Jake, if I’m wrong about you, I apologize…but wait, there’s no way to show me that I’m wrong, because you took a plane rather than a blood test, so I guess I’m not sorry after all. And Jake, if I’m right, you owe the apology – to Derrick, your brother and the crew of the Cornelia Marie. Forget about the television show – this is your life, and that’s more important.
Simple fact is, and really all that needs to be said here is this, a man who is innocent like he claims and wants to clear his name and prove that someone else is trying to make them look bad would NOT be sneaking off a boat to avoid the cops then refusing to take the 1 test that can prove they were not lying. This is a TV program. From all the video that’s shot it has to be edited down to fit the allotted space and tell a story. This is journalism same as writing a story for the paper except that its visual. Sharp editing can reflect any story in whatever direction is chosen. We only know what we were shown, as we weren’t there and don’t know the whole truth.
Although he ran it like it was his Phil only owned 25% of the CM. He did a good job as captain so the rest of the owners allowed him to do his thing, as long as there was profit to be shared. We didn’t share in Phil’s communications with them. He had his own way of doing things and the crew was used to it. His boys were late arrivals in their lives. Remember how a lot of the other guys started when they were kids and so did Phil. Phil liked having his boys around and put up with a lot more crap then he would have from anybody else. I doubt the boys would have made it on another boat. His final year he tried to make an impression on the boys. Remember he told them he wouldn’t be around much longer. The handwriting was on the wall for Phil. Remember he told Jake that he would never get the captains seat. He was trying to teach Josh but ran out of time. Josh was in denial and not as apt as he should have been.
Derrick Ray was hired to be captain for this year. He was known by the family and other owners. His way was different than Phil’s as he ran a tighter ship and the crew rebelled. A dumb move, the last guy you mess with is the captain. The captain runs the boat, period. I’m certain the majority owners of the CM gave him instructions on what was to be done.
As a side note I hired in as an automotive instructor after the previous one had passed away. I was hired by the superintendent of schools that told me how the class had been loosely run and he wanted someone that would “kick ass”, his actual words. The new captain might have been told that same thing, we weren’t there were we?
The Harris boys should have just kept their mouths closed and tried to learn all they could. No, they tried to act like bosses when they weren’t and just created a block between captain and crew. After it all went to hell Josh should have stepped up to the plate and thought of the boat and not himself. He should also have been in better control of his brother who has a lot of growing up to do. But then Jake is a smart ass and needed a firmer hand from dad. He used drugs, lied, and stole, anybody else would have been canned on the spot.
Jake proved his guilt and unless he gets his act together shouldn’t be on the boat. Josh needs to man up, learn all he can, then show any leadership qualities he has. To be a leader he’ll need to be closer to the captain and not best buddy with the crew. A good example is the Northwestern with two brothers both leaders and operating in the #1 and #2 positions on the boat. If the boys want to keep their share of the operation then they need to stay off the boat or get their acts together.
But then that’s how I see it and like assholes, we all have our own views.
Agree with your comments Dallas. When you are working on a boat/ship everyone counts on each other to pull your load and to do it in a sober condition.
The majority owner of the boat should have had Derrick Ray return to port and off load Josh, Jake, the engineer and replace them. You can’t have minority owners on the boat trying to run it, it doesn’t work especially when they are young with no business experience and have never had this type responsibility before.
I am not saying Derrick is the perfect Captain, but he has worked for the majority owner before and did a job good enough to be rehired again. I don’t think the majority owner will allow the Harris boys back on the boat unless they keep their mouths shut and are drug free. Wouldn’t be suprised to see the Coast Guard with drug dogs boarding that boat……………..

I was there, I saw what happened, and it didnt take place in the 15 minutes that was aired.
I love people like reality who get on sites and post i was there and this isnt how it happened. Thats fine man ok say the boat was there 3 or 4 hours hell 6 days i dont care. The simple fact is that officer was called there for the drugs and the officer had to go figure out where he skipped off to. Where were the rest of the crew members at reality? The 15 mins of the show i watched as you say showed all the other guys there on the boat watching him hop over the rail and slide by the officer he knew was there for him. The fact is every person on that boat knew why that officer was called there. I dont need to have been there to know that if Jake was innocent as he claimed he would have just taken the drug test and shoved the results down that guys throat saying look at this all the accusations you made saying i was using and look here i wasnt.
The fact is he left the dock and went to the airport then refused a drug test. It doesnt matter what the producers want you to see, they can cut and clip anything they like. The fact is it all came down to the officer saying if you were to take a drug test you would pass right? And jake responded saying he didnt see why he should have to take a test then refused to do so. All there really is to it. Innocent people want to clear their name.
Interesting episode to say the least. It comes as no surprise to anyone that has at least one brain cell that young Mr Harris was doing drugs on board (he may now be clean). The shows producers have once again shown that by careful cuts and edits, powerful and emotional responses can be sought, and gained. Top quality work. It is such a shame we cannot see what really had happened that led to the ‘mutiny’ of all hands. Personally, I think Derrick was right on the money with the way he ran things. Stern and harsh, yes. But isn’t that what a captain does? I can’t really see a future for young Mr Harris crabbing. Full marks to Josh for standing by him, but he is the one I would look too, to carry on the family tradition. Get off the CM and work under the other skippers, get your licenses and become the next great Harris.

If someone accused you of having drugs and called the cops and you did not know if you would be blamed for the bag. Would you stick around! if you say yes! your not to smart. ask anyone that has tried to do the right thing and had it bite them in the ass.

Keep in mind that Jake still had his Father when he was popping the pills last year. I don’t think he would do that now. He was forced to grow up.

If I worked in a small contained environment with 6 other people (5 crew plus 2 cameramen), where one screw-up could kill me or someone else, and someone found drug paraphenalia and accused me, and it wasn’t mine, I would most certainly volunteer for a drug test, and demand that the paraphenalia was fingerprinted.
I would also be hurt and angry that I had been accused, and I might decide to find a more healthy environment to work in. But first I would clear my own name, and second I would demand that everyone else be investigated (partly as revenge for the false accusation, and yes I am occasionally small-minded in that way.) If it wasn’t Jake’s dope, then it was Josh or the engineer or Freddie or the cameramen, all of whom are still working the Bering Sea.
If I was part-owner of a boat, I would consider it a responsibility of ownership, and protecting my investment, to keep the drugs off my boat.
(If I was an owner, I would also stay for the offload and count, since every missed crab is money out of my pocket, but we’ve been over that ground already.)
I am greatly curious to know what precautions, if any, the majority owners put in place to allow Jake back on board for Opie season. I am also greatly curious to know what rules, if any, the Harris boys and the new captain were given by the majority owners regarding decision-making while at sea. Of course, we may never learn any of this. But it will definitely keep me watching, which I guess is the point.

It’s pretty clear to see from all these comments who has actually worked on a boat and who has not, or you can see who actually has worked in their life HARD and who has not.
Derrick is (or was) the captain. End of story they selected him and he laid his rules down. You all think Derrick is a prick? Why? He didn’t love them, he didn’t wipe their ass for them. Yes sure I am not or have never been on that boat but I have been on many fishing vessels and with EVERY NEW CAPTAIN COMES A NEW ATTITUDE!!! Get over it its like any job. Seriously you work anywhere and when a boss change comes in it is always rough. In this case it is extra rough because the boat has been run the same way for so long these boys don’t wanna let go. Sure some of you may think that Derrick is an ass for what he said about Phil. I loved watching Phil great guy. Really that kind of guy you want to be friends with but the reality is we live in a society now that enables being a baby and being coddled, Sorry its true.

They had a great dad, great boat and great life and of course their own personal demons like everyone has but that is no excuse for a mutiny. You don’t like the captain get off then you hired him and you can fire him when you get back to port. But a mutiny? There is a reason for all of maritime tradition back 2000 years it has always been considered treason and wrong no matter how right the crew thinks or is right. You guys keep ragging on Derrick saying he did things shitty well so did Phil’s boys. The blame is really 50/50.
On the drugs. I am a sober once big time drug user. When I got clean and some people at work where questioning it just like any recovering addict will tell you, YOU JUMP FOR THE SKY WHEN YOU CAN PROVE YOURSELF. Jake is in front of a national camera with an average of 12 million viewers watching him clearly running away and when confronted to take a drug test (WHICH HE SAID HE WOULD DO LIKE A COUPLE HOURS BEFORE THEY DOCKED) and clearly will not. That is also fishy. I MEAN COME ON YOUR CHANCE IN FRONT OF ALL AMERICA TO BASH DERRICK!!! AND PROVE YOUR RIGHT THIS ENTIRE TIME AND YOU DON’T TAKE IT??? Guilty guilty guilty I did that same shit all the time It’s harassment, it’s bullshit blah blah. I have said that shit and every addict knows they have said that shit. Old and true adage “If you got nothing to hide…”
So everyone on here who thinks Derrick is the devil and I am not saying he did everything right but he is not the monster some of you are painting.

1.) If you pulled over and a cop thinks your drunk and you know you have not had a drink. Anyone and everyone would jump to prove their innocence and not want to get a DWI and go to jail. Basic point Jake could have cleared all this up with a simple piss or blood test. Plus, I don’t care what some of you are saying the first piss test he took. He looked freaking nervous as hell and that face he made was the exact face I have seen countless drug users make ME INCLUDED when you don’t know if your detox product worked and your not fully convinced. Watch that episode again and watch his face. Plus the moment he sees a cop he ran and all his belly aching of proving himself seemed to go nowhere when finally able to prove himself.

Derrick was 100% RIGHT ON ONE THING YOU DON”T QUIT. Look at Keith, Andy and John and Sig and even the Rambling Rose. They have been going through 2 to 3 week dry spells and guess what they finally got the crab. Even Bill on the Kodiak fully pulled around. That is the point. You don’t quit ever! You keep fishing. Even though your losing money now you can make it later.
Every ship was losing money this season and not catching. What is the difference? The Harris boys were the only ones to quit with that other guy Josh from the Seabrook.
I am sure I am going to get hate responses but the truth is the truth and not my truth but just the way it is in the fishing world. You gotta be tough or go home. Everyone has lost a parent and I know it’s hard. Believe me I know but you gotta keep going on and you can’t be deluded into thinking it is always going to be the same. It is not, LIFE CHANGES DAILY! You gotta roll with it.
I have worked in Alaska for 5 yrs, and I have dealt with People just like Jake Harris. He wouldn’t last on any other boat for very long. His whiney spoiled attitude would get him nowhere, except on the Cornelia Marie where it covers up his obvious slacker mentality and drug soaked brain.
I like Jake and Josh. They are young, as such it will be interesting to watch them deal with life as adults, which includes learning how to work through difficult situations.
As for Derreck —- I could’nt stand him, his people skills ….wait a minute, what people skills? The guy sucked. I wanted to spew everytime He started in again on singing his own praises, while taking SHOTS at Jake…a 21 year old…30 years his Jr.

Jake had a lot to say to the policeman questioning him.

If you are in a dangerous line of work, random blood tests should be a requirement. This isn’t called the deadliest catch for nothing.

How do you know there aren’t any drugs on board Jake unless your the only one bringing them on board and you got rid of them.
How come Steve doesn’t know there are drugs in his engine room. what does he do on board, deckwork, oh that’s right he only handles maintainance, which means he works in the engine room.
Its obvious these guys don’t want to fish, they want the tv drama.
Freddie leaving the boat made a loud statement about the CM’s operation.
Just imagine a drug sniffing dog working the docks.

Heres the thing about this last episode, there are 4-5 people on this boat, you think Jake was doing drugs ok fine so you go looking for evidence and lo and behold you find some bags with air freshner and “drug paraphanalia”. Now we know that this program is edited for maximum drama but let think about this from a reality stand point. One is the Harris boys would know every inch of that boat there has got to be a million places for them to hide drugs, where would you even begin to look with out a dog? Second if you remember the cop says I cant do anything with a bag and some lighters, so basically there was no proof of anything, and ask your self this Jake smokes why would he hide a lighter for his pot he has one in his pocket for the cig’s? Third in order for the police to have done anything they would have had to catch Jake with the drugs, they have no idea if the captain found them, set them on himself, if they were there from a past trip , no DA in the world could convict a man of drugs on a third party turning over evidence he found in an engine room with no proof of the actual owner.IS jake on drugs who knows but him, is Dereck a dick, well the situation could have been handled different thats for sure, calling the police in, which makes for good drama, was a dumb thing to do specailly when your dealing with one of the owners of the boat, he knew he was leaving before he made that call, because he sure as hell was leaving after. So one has to wonder what his true motive was. Lastly as a business owner, money is always a huge issue, if you are fishing crabs and getting nothing, which was happening, and your money is on the line someting has to be done, in past episodes the Harris boys nicely asked Derrick to give up this blue crap and go to king he wanted more time, which they gave him and still nothing, how much money are you going to spend to pull blank pots when King crab is a more sure thing?Personaly I wouldnt be so judgemental pro or con your being fed what they want you to see for ratings for money and they dont care who gets stepped on or hurt in the process, you can love Phil Harris all you want but they will use his memory to make as much money on the program as they can.
After watching the show for many years, I have never thought Jakey’s heart was in it. To me Josh was and always has been the one that’s shown to be of higher caliber. During the infamous Phil sickness and death shows it was JOSH not Jake who was the one who “manned up”. That speaks captain material to me. Yes Jake was guilty of boarding some smoke – Yes it was stupid. But as a supposed man and captain – D.Ray boy could have taken it privately with Jake..but no he had to peacock his self righteous ass for the cameras due to his failure as a crab fisher. I’m for Joshua to take the helm, when ready. Also, for D.Ray to remain a tour guide.
I only have one thing to say about last night’s episode… “Thank God”. Watching this Deadliest Catch season and witnessing Derrick Ray’s behavior towards the crew, especially the Harris boys, was an absolute travesty. I do not care about the details, all I care about is the fact that Derrick did not handle himself appropriately whatsover. He was always working against the Harris boys and crew, not with them. Had I taken on skippering their boat, the first thing to happen would have been to sit down with them and say, “Hey, look. I know you boys just lost your father a few months ago and I commend you for participating so soon in another crab season. I am not here to replace your father, as he is irreplaceable. But I will do my best to continue his legacy with regards to what a terrific crabber he was. Tell me the course you believe that your father would take while out on the Bering Sea to catch crab and I will be happy to comply. If we all work together, we can bring in a lot of crab and make your old man proud. And I also want to have the two of you come up to the Bridge with me on a schedule so I can continue to teach you the ways of the boat as your father was doing. Now let’s go catch some crab!”
Had Derrick started off the crab season that way, I have a feeling things would have worked out much differently for the crew of the Cornelia Maria. But unfortunately, he was a pure disgrace. I understand that a lot can be edited out to make someone appear to be something they’re not; however, this was not the case for Derrick Ray. It was quite obvious from the very beginning that he was incredibly self-involved, incredibly self-centered and was (to himself only) the greatest crabber on earth (even better than Sig, according to an interview they did with him in EW! lol That certainly takes balls to make a claim like that!). That boat and crew never stood a chance against their new skipper. He may or may not have had good intentions and I respect everyone’s opinions as far as that is concerned, but it really blows my mind that there are actually those of you who support Derrick, despite his lack of tact and people skills. If you’re going to be a good captain, there are two things that are very important: 1) CATCHING CRAB 2)BEING AUTHORITIVE YET RESPECTFUL AND PERSONABLE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CREW
Capt Ray completed neither of these tasks successfully. And anyone who believes that the cops were not called on Jake out of spite need to re-watch last night’s episode. Derrick in the beginning of the episode before he is ultimately fired, states that he knows there has been marijuana smoking on the boat and that there is zero tolerance, the boat could get seized and even he could get in trouble if the cops came on board and found anything while they were at port. That being said, I find it very odd that after he found out he was fired, all of a sudden he decides that he is going to contact the cops. Firstly, he didn’t have to worry about being arrested himself because he was fired. Secondly, if the cops came onboard and did find anything, the boat could be seized, Jake would have been arrested and the CM would have been retired. And based on his comments in his EW article that he decided to be the skipper so that he could see the CM come to it’s end further backs up the fact that he made his decision out of pure spite. I’m incredibly glad that he’s gone, I’m incredibly glad that I got to witness him getting the boot, and I’m incredibly glad that the Harris boys have been able to move on without him. I’m incredibly curious as to what the other captains thoughts were when they found out about this situation and saw the footage of the CM’s time out at sea. Something tells me John Hillstrand would have been livid, especially considering that we all know how much he hates it when other people make comments about family members (remember the argument between John and Keith over the comment Keith made about John’s dad?) So I know there are quite a few things Derrick said while skipper the CM that would not have been looked upon kindly. And John, being the wonderful person that he is I do not think would stand for anyone talking about Phil Harris in the manner of which Derrick did. I hope that he contacted Derrick and layed him out. Even better, I hope that he ran into him and physically shut him up. Because I cannot say how many times this season that I have wanted to strangle Derrick Ray, just due to the fact that he is such a horrible person with a horrible heart. Very excited for the future Deadliest Catch episodes to air, it will be very refreshing to see a new skipper on board, especially one that appears to be working out incredibly well. Explain that one away, Derrick Ray!!
I wasn’t going to get on the drug thing again, but c’mon, who really needs a dog to sniff out pot? It’s not about a conviction; it’s about maritime law and the captain’s responsibilities; it’s about trying to make a point to a kid who’s admitted he’s an addict and is again showing tendencies; it’s about safety and protecting the boat and the crew.
I’m not trying to bash the boys, the crew or the captain. A.D. has it right. You don’t quit. To paraphrase Tom Hanks in “A league of their own”, There’s no crying in crab fishing!!! You don’t mutiny because you’ve had a sting of bad luck. You don’t cut and run after eight days. It’s a bad combination to have deck hands who are also part owners to start with. Part owner or not, there’s one captain and the Harris boys were not captain. I guess they can give their input if they must, but the captain has the final word. They should have had their say, let the captain made the decision and then followed his orders. If things didn’t work out at the end of the season, then, they can fire the captain. Instead they were on deck and below deck berating the captain and questioning everything the captain did and said to the rest of the crew – very bad for morale. The problems started before they even left dock, when Jake and Steve were late getting back and when the captain questioned them, they gave him attitude. That’s a bad way to start a trip. Bad enough if you’re just a deck hand, but a deck hand who is suddenly “part owner” and the son of the former beloved captain who just died tragically? The crew was put in a terrible spot. Do they follow the new captain or back up the sons of the old captain? If they follow the new captain, and don’t back up the kids, are they somehow betraying their loyalty to Phil? It’s terribly hard to be the new boss under the best of circumstances, which these were not; the deck is already stacked against you. The boys made a difficult transition impossible. I know they’re young, but if you look at the resumes of some of the other captains, they were young too, when they became captains. I think Phil, himself was very early twenties when he started to captain the boat (I may be wrong on the age, but I think I remember that). At any rate, age is irrelevant. The boys are inexperienced, which is why they are not captains. Captains captain, not deck hands – period, end of conversation. You must respect the position, if not the man. And I totally agree; the other captains we have met would never put up this kind of thing, either.
It is plain and simple, doing drugs on a boat is a no,no. This is a dangerous job where everyone has to be on their toes. Who ever is responsible for consuming drugs on a boat is just as quilty. There should be random drug test on all these boats just like they do with trucks, buses,airplanes, etc. where other peoples lives are on the line.
Capt Derrick only had 8 days to prove himself as captain, captain is captain, and his job is catch crab, and be responsible for everyone on the boat, period. I am a fisherman for many years and fishing is fishing you go thru dry periods, you don’t quit, you keep fishing until you catch something, someone gets seriouly hurt, the boat breaks down or they close the season on you. I remember where Phil went a couple weeks with nothing until he got it turned around, he didn’t put his tail between his leg and run for home. Man up boys this is a mans job.
These young guys are not men yet and they need to shape up, quit lying, denying, and crying. This is a risk and reward business.

He even got into it with Phil a few occasions if you remember. And the other two guys just wanted to fish, but were forced to draw a line in the sand because of Jake and Josh; at least it appeared that way.

I can’t believe they all quit…the only stand up guy on the boat was Derrick in my opinion. I hope they get back out there on the water soon, regardless of who the crew is made up of.
Derrick wasn’t right for the job. But if you think about it, who would have been? Can anyone replace Phil? There isn’t a person in the world who could have done that this season. However, Derrick came across as someone with very little confidence (who keeps talking themselves up as a great crabber, and putting other captains down, CONSTANTLY!) and he had a huge chip on his shoulder from the get go. And if I remember correctly, when he took over for Phil during opies last season, he couldn’t catch crab then either.
And as far as Jake goes…I’m just disappointed. I did not see a time when he wasn’t clear eyed and completely coherent (and who knew you could see so much more detail in hi-def LOL), but then again I have little kids that constantly interrupt me watching the show. If he were doing drugs or smoking weed, why didn’t the Discovery camera men catch it? Don’t you think that would have made good TV? I think there were a few other people on the boat that were a little shady as well. But, I’m saddened by Jake just taking off. It speaks very highly of guilt. I hope he can grow up and do the right thing.
So what if there is a little weed smokin goin on on the CM? Some people focus better with the weed. People are makin a big deal out of a little weed. Yea, it’s a dangerous job as it is, but they are men who should know their limits. I was in Vietnam. We used to smoke joints end to end, lightin them up with the one we were puttin out on the chopper as the gunner was rakin the landing zone with machine gun fire. Even the pilot would have a toke….booze was a different story though…no booze was tolerated in our detachement during combat missions. Give Jake a break.

Unless he is completely making stuff up out of his imagination, the cameramen did film Jake smoking, they just didn’t put it in the show. (Also, Derrick says Josh came to him on the 3rd day of the season and said, “We’re making a TV show, not fishing for crab. When we have enough TV we’re going home.”
I can’t say he’s telling the truth or lying, but those are pretty bold statements to be made up out of thin air.

As someone who has watched this show from the beginning when it was America’s Deadliest Season I think I have seen the most disgraceful behavior yet. I work in TV so I know editing and no doubt this episode was edited for maximum drama. But let there be no doubt that the behavior of the Harris boys, especially Jake, says to me they do not deserve nor should they be trusted out there on the sea with lives at stake. Jake is an admitted drug addict and is using again. I’ve seen enough drug addicts in my time, including in my own family, to know how they act. They always say it not fair or it’s harassment and why are they being treated differently. Because you don’t deserve to be treated special. You are poisoning yourself and putting lives at risk. Furthermore as Derrick Ray said it’s against maritime law that is enforced by the Coast Guard. So zero tolerance is right. In fact I might have inflated a raft and dumped him in it with an Epirb device so he could be found. Would any other captain have allowed it? Nope. Oh well as good as the show is it is still just a show and to all of you who think otherwise, Phil was no hero. He didn’t run into burning buildings to save lives or take on enemy fire in a war zone. He was just a flawed man who happened to be a crab fisherman and his life style caught up with him. It will happen to us all someday and the majority of us won’t be a national cable TV show to be glorified as a hero. We will just die and that will be the end of it. And that just about sums up my feelings for the Cornelia Marie itself. I do hope that Mrs Devlin will take over and kick the boys off the boat and get back to business. They have their dad’s minority share and clearly have no sense of responsibility or what is involved in the business of fishing. If Josh can mature and show some leadership then let him back on. But Jake has no business out there. Send him an ownership royalty check and he can sniff it up his nose or inject it in his arm or whatever poison he chooses to use. And life will go on.

The Captian was correct in what he did. As a retired U.S. Marshal I have seen my share of drug addicts and jake is definately one of them and refuses to get clean and stay sober. There was even a recent addition to the fishermans memorial in Dutch where Capt. Phils name was added and jake was MIA…more than likely to stoned to make it. I hope he gets clean but I dont think that he should be allowed back on board until he can pass a drug test and then also one on every trip in to offload..The saftey of the crew is paramount and noone should have to worry about staying alive everyday they are fishing as well as having to worry about your fellow crewmate being wasted and not being able to help when it is needed….

My opinion of Jake just hit the shitter. He needs to be fired and should never set foot on the boat again. His Dad has to be rolling in his grave. He should have been drug tested right on the spot like he promised. Nobody that is innocent leaves all there stuff behind and takes off. He will always be a con artist. I can’t say I support the captain and how he always conducted himself, but he was right in what he did.
Captain Phil would not approve of any drug use on his boat, he exploded at Jake when he caught him stealing his pills. I haven’t seen the latest show yet but, I wanted to know if he caught Jake doing drugs. Hopefully, Josh can see the Cornelia Marie through this rough time and step-up.

The problem with drug addiction is most people deny they have a problem until they get caught. Jake confirms his prior drug use because he was caught stealing drugs from his father and now after a stay at the Betty Ford Clinic he professes to be clean. I doubt that he is clean based upon the obvious signs related to the physical signs of slurred speech and altered cognitive ability.
Jake’s behavior of denial, deflection and overly aggressive defense of his sobriety suggest he has relapsed and requires additional drug rehabilitation therapy. Jake had the opportunity to submit to a urine test when he was contacted by the police officer at the airport. He refused by alleging he was being harassed. This is typical behavior for drug users who have relapsed and don’t want to be caught. It would have been a simple way to prove his sobriety and confirm he was honoring his pledge to his father that he would get help. But that didn’t happen and coupled with everything else, Jake clearly has resumed his drug abuse and now endangers the crew, himself and the viability of the Cornelia Marie.
As for the crew changes: I am pleased to see that Steve Ward has left the Cornelia Marie. Early into the season, Ward and Jake Harris took an inordinate amount of time returning to the ship and were confronted about their tardiness by Ray. The ensuing argument between Ray and Ward ended with Ward threatening to quit. As a result Ward harbored an ongoing personal grudge against Ray and subsequently undermined Ray’s ability to captain the Cornelia Marie. Ward can be seen on numerous occasions in urging other crew members to be insubordinate to Ray. Had Ward conducted himself in this manner aboard any other vessel he would have been fired.
My hope is that Josh Harris will have counsel with professionals who can help him assist his brother in battling his drug problem. In addition, Josh would benefit from trusted colleagues who are willing to help him in obtaining his captain’s license and managing all aspects of a fishing vessel. I met Josh two years ago and was impressed with his humanity, enthusiasm and willingness to take over the family business. I believe he will be a successful captain someday provided he recognizes all the aspects of crew dynamics and is willing to make those hard decisions which define a leader.
@Brian, no Jake is not going to kill himself. In fact, he and Jake Anderson went on the Dr. Drew show earlier this year and talked openly about their addictions (Jake A. is a recovering alcoholic). Hopefully this means that Jake got help before Opie season.
Just idle speculation, but I think this is the last season for the CM on Deadliest Catch. I seem to remember reading that Mrs. Devlin was looking to sell out of the fishing business before Phil died, and Derrick suggests in his interview that the boat is is poor condition and saddled with debt. And I seem to remember that J&J were trying to get financing to buy the entire boat. My guess is they couldn’t get it together, and Mrs. Devlin gave them a year to keep things in the family and try to work it out. Finally, I speculate that the crews are paid fairly well for their TV appearances regardless of how good the fishing is, but this money (or most of it) only goes to the on-camera talent, not the off-camera owners, so even in a bad season the boys make money from TV even if the boat loses money. Regardless of who shares what percentage of the blame for the aborted king crab season, I would not be surprised to see Mrs. Devlin cut her losses and get out from under this boat and its baggage. Where that leaves J&J I have no idea.
I do think Derrick was a little over the top in HOW he handled things (but it’s tv so likely a bit of editing and dramatic effect). I do not however think it was wrong. If you got on an airplane you assume all airline officials are clean and sober, this should be no different. Everyone needs to have each others backs in ANY situation where lives are on the line. You don’t have to like each other, but you need to respect each other and watch out for everyone as well as yourself. Jake should not be out there and the show should keep him out in order for him to make an attempt to get better and not exploit his situation further. Regardless of whether it makes good tv. If and when he returns, there should be some stipulations in terms of testing, etc. Which is in fact pretty standard in situations where lives are on the line (in fact, he’d be lucky to return at all under any circumstances given his history). For those who have served in the military, thank you so very much for your dedication to this country and the sacrifices you have made. But please stop hating on each other on the message board. I come from a military family, and my biggest hero is my father who will ALWAYS be a Marine. He has also instilled in each of us a sense of the sacrifice by all service members and their families who have fallen in battle. My best friends sister was in the WTC on 9/11 and I have lost two friends in Iraq. None of them gave their lives to be honored by other veterans having a pissing contest on a site for a tv show!

Being in law enforcement I’ve been around these junkies for 25 years, Jake has all the signs of opiate addiction, probably Oxy or Vicodin – he needs help before something terrible happens to him.
Just imagin what would happen if the CM or any other crab boat went down, and it was later discovered the Capt. was under the influence of pot alcohol, or any other drug, what would happen to the owners of the boat, their asses would be sued off!!! I have and know of friends that have lost their licenses to fly planes, or pilot boats because of prior or recent drug, or alcohol abuse. They have not only lost their licenses, but been denied them as well. The choices they made ruined their careers, but more than that, they are lucky they never killed anyone!!!!

It staggers the imagination just how cavalier some people are on this board regarding drug use during situations and in scenarios where other people’s lives are on the line and could be tragically affected. And while I’m prior service as well(HOOOAH!) and it pains me to see other veterans bow up on each other on this or any other site, I have to agree with the Jackson fellow’s opinion about keeping your head clear when other’s lives are at stake. Jake will never get his shit together until he hits rock bottom and scooting past the cop and acting indignant about taking another drug test when he had already stated on camera that he would is NOT rock bottom. And to everyone who is bashing Capt. Ray, there is a reason there is a chain of command. Like I said when I posted earlier, he’s not there to win a popularity contest. IMHO, the Cornelia Marie is poisoned and needs to clean house.
Oh, and Jake, you told Capt. Ray that “respect” had to earned. Well, so does “trust”. You are an addict and admitted to being one, so even if you were clean, you should taken the test, proven the point, and moved on. The military campaigns of today are different than nam.

Taking into account that the show was edited for maximum effect, I still feel Derrick Ray was a bit over zealous in his running of the ship.

One thing I am not surprised about is the lack of coverage in the drug use that goes on throughout the fishing fleets. They don;t want to show how wide spread drug use is onboard fishing vessels throughout the world. If you think POT is the major problem, think again. Crazy long hours and pain are part of the game. I will let you guess which drugs fit the bill.
Regardless, these are unreal men and the hardships they endure are super human.

It’s interesting to read all the comments posted here about Jake and Derrick, the power trips, the idea that it’s ok to be high out at sea. It’s interesting because I doubt many of the people making these comments have ever been out to sea, let alone in the dangers of the Bering Sea. First, Jake. Yes, he is partial owner, but that does not mean he does not work for the Captain once that boat leaves the dock. If there is anything that is supreme in this earthly world, it is the Captain of a vessel at sea. His responsibility is enormous and you have to respect that position, even if you do not respect the man. Being high or even the remotest possibility of being impaired not only affects him, but the crew itself. We do not know for sure he was using, but let’s assume he did. What if the ship was in distress and they needed to get into exposure suits…or there was a fire…or any emergency. Could Jake have handled himself at that point? Maybe, maybe not. But either way, the Captain would still be responsible for him. Do you see the point? Jake put Derrick in a position that the Captain had to make a tough decision. Ok, secondly, Derrick. I could see how this was going, come onboard, establish himself as the “law” and do as I say. Doesn’t necessarily work all the time. He should have earned the respect of the crew first. I dont think he ever really tried. The whole operation is a team effort. Derrick was not a good leader. Either way you look at it, it’s a shame. Doomed from the start. Derrick needs to learn a lesson…Jake needs to realize the responsibility he has to both himself and the crew. And yes, I’ve been on boats for almost 30 years.

I have no idea why all of this interest me so much. It is great reality drama. Having served in the Marines I simply can not agree with Rays leadership skills.
I mean this is a man with 230 years plus experience as a fisherman. He is no spring chicken. If you read what is on the website, the CM owners and Ray made a plan before they left port. They knew fishing for blue crab was a risk and they also knew their budget.
I have to give the boys credit for taking a risk and heading back out to sea, not certain of the outcome. They have been through a lot.
Ray should have been a better leader. His action were just as immature as those of Jake.

Mace, I don’t pretend to know what Nam was like exactly. I’ve heard some of my relatives who were there talk about it. I was only in the mop up task Force after Operation Just Cause and I was in Desert Shield/Storm from beginning to end. you’re right, it WAS different. I remember landing at Pope AFB when I we came back from the desert and seeing all of the bands and the people. None of us on the plane knew that the celebration was for us. I also remember thinking that I wished I could at least give a little mini-bottle of that celebration to each Vietnam vet so they, too, could experience the welcome home that they(you) so richly deserved. I don’t agree with you on the point that smoking pot over there didn’t increase the chances of someone not coming home from one of those patrols, but I respect your and your fellow service members’ service and the fact that the Vietnam War was a poorly run war on the part of the politicians from that time, certainly not the soldiers who put their lives on the line. We soldiers who came after you reaped the benefits of what was learned from the mistakes those politians. So I am sorry you had to go through that, but thank you for that, as well.
On the subject of Jake…his drug use (past and probably present) is just a symptom of bigger problems. Not only did he steal his father’s medication and taken that medication while on board the Cornelia Marie (in addition to whatever else he might have ingested), people forget that he bullied his older brother when Josh first joined the crew of the CM and also took his dad’s credit card (when he was supposed to be getting supplies for the crew for a fishing trip)and bought a flat screen television for his bunk on the boat…unbeknownst to Phil. Phil almost blew a gasket when that happened. Jake’s behavior has almost always been suspect. I hope he has or will turn his life around. Until then, he’s just a punk. I really get the impression that Josh wants to be a better fisherman…I guess time will tell.
On another note, I don’t think we should let the TV show’s film crew slide from criticism, either. If I’m not mistaken, one of the production crew for one of the boats was arrested for doing drugs and selling cocaine, pot, meth and Oxy in the past year.

I hate to say that I really hope that Jake never sets foot on the CM again. He has no business there, based on his attitude throughout the series. I thought Derrick Ray performed well as captain (seems rather accomplished), even stepping in when they needed him most, and although he was hard on Jake I suspect its because he has been friends with the Harris family for so long. It’s still a shame about the whole situation. The Captain has responsibility and none of the authority on that boat. I believe that both are at fault (Josh and Derrick) and to a certain extent, the rest of the crew as well. Their lives could depend on Jake one day, the same as they did each day with Derrick on the bridge. Now I know they are all tight, believe me, I know, but still, a true shipmate would say hey, dude, you’re messin up the team and putting lives in danger. I think there’s fault to go around. Well Mr. Thompson… how am I wrong. Kinda seems like you just post that but you don’t cite anything or even debate it. Look the Harris’ called it quits because of crew moral and Derrick decided to run his mouth and bash everyone making it worse. On top of that collectively the boats owners (Cornellia Marie and the Harris boys) called it quits because the ship had gone well over fuel budget and the strings were not making profit. Sounds like the boat BS (drugs, arguing and fighting as well as the lack of profitable crabbing) ended the CM king crab season. Seems like a sound BUSINESS move. Now going back to the man of few words, Mr Thompsons, statement- How am I wrong? Jake could have been smoking dope so couldn’t have Freddie, Josh, Ryan, Steve and Derrick. The only proof is that it was present and that Derrick solely hunted Jake down for it. Could have been anyone who put it there or left it there for more than one reason. I just think it is ridiculous that these dudes (Josh and especially Jake) are being crapped on. Hell who knows, maybe smoking dope on the boat was an allowed and regular thing when Captain Phil was there. In my opinion a pot head is different from being a drug addict but that is a whole different discussion for a whole other site.
CB, I will do what Mr. Thompson did not, tell you at least part of how you are wrong.
First. Before the ship left port, Jake and Steve disappeared from the boat, told no one where they were going or for how long. Unacceptable since the boat was preparing to put to sea, not to mention irresponsible for a part owner. Then, when the Captain asked about it all he got was attitude from Steve. Derrick would have been more than justified in firing Steve on the spot.
Second. Jake, after telling Derrick he would take a blood test to prove he hadn’t been smoking MJ, snuck off the ship and was in the process of running when the police officer found him. He then went back on his promise about the blood test and left the state before more concrete evidence could be found. Running away like that says a number of things about Jake, one is that he was guilty and knew it.
Third. Derrick had to act on his suspicions. If the police found MJ on the boat Derrick could lose his license, face jail and oh year, under the RICO statute SIEZE the boat. In that case the CM could be held or sold, in effect the Harris boys could have lost their legacy from Captain Phil. What it comes down to is that Captain Derrick was protecting everyone’s interests, his own, the crew and the three owners as well.
Fourth. Steve was insubordinate from day one. This is also a strong argument for not having boat owners who are not also the Captain as crew, it undermines the Captain’s authority and the chain of command. In short, the crew and the situation put Derrick in a no-win situation, especially since they had bad fishing luck and forced Derrick to give up early which he clearly didn’t want to do.
Whose opinion do we give the most weight? Two inexperienced crew who are also part owners. Or, a veteran captain with over 20 years experience as a Captain. In any rational organization, it is the experienced Captain.
Seems to me that as part owners they were in agreement with Derrick to go fishing for the Blue Crab, to me that seemed strange as being first season with out Phil maybe they should have at least went for the Red first.I agree with the earlier post as to Steve’s attitude, should have been fired.Jake went to rehab and after Phil passed seems like I read he had a DUI in Seattle, relapses happen I know but to take weed on the boat. Now if he was clean he maybe didn’t have to but it would have looked better to go ahead and prove you weren’t lying that to get off the boat and disappear.

I remember fishing for steelhead on the Puyallup River in Washington in the late 60′s. I was pretty good and used to fish a few times a week in those days. Well one day a friend brought along some Kona weed I took a couple hits, it took me over a half hour trying to figure out how to cast my reel. There were a bunch of big rocks on other side of river, I thought they were cows. We got real hungry and took off for the famous Blackdiamond Bakery and bought two big barrell bags of doughnuts and other pasteries. We never did catch any fish that day!!!!
Ok valid points Mr. Osborne. I understand where you are coming from. I just feel that we REALLY do not know the whole story. I mean it made great TV and kinda boosted ratings a good bit. I agree with Derrick being pissed at Steve…. but Derrick is a dick and his attitude showed…. I am not saying he should not have been mad but he approached it wrong…. I just do not agree with the dude physically shoving Steve the way he did. I understand the conflict between crew members being owners and underming the Captain…. but Derrick approached the season way too gung ho for these boys. I am not gonna say whether that is the boys fault or Derricks but it ended up the way it did. Jake passed two drug tetst since the start of the season…. one supervised and i do not know how the second was administered. Regardless Jake does have an attitude and I do not blame him for saying “F this I am outta here. He talks trash on how my pops raised and taught me (who passed a year ago), I took two piss tests and he is completely gunning for me. I AM OUT!” In the end it is what it is… no prrof just suspicions and I bet the boys will be back season after season as long as Deadliest Catch is airing. They both start Captains School in June and the will be on the opi season… I am just gonna have to say in my opinion Jake and Josh need to get it together and build on what Phil has left them (the ship and multiple businesses like Captain Phils Coffee) and Derrick is gone so that problem is gone…. I just do not feel it is fair (whether the show made it seem or it was) that Jake and Josh are crapped on so bad. They will be fine and they will do their thing.

I really miss Captain Phil!! The best tribute to the Captain would be for Jake to get the treatment he desperately needs and for Josh to muster some inner strength. Their legacy is the Cornelia Marie and I want them to succeed!! It would be awesome to see them Captain the boat with pride and purpose. Instead of bashing Jake we need to have some sympathy. If he is abusing drugs it’s a sickness!! He lost his Dad his mentor and he seems a bit lost!! Love to the Harris boys! Peace!
well that maybe true Mr Osborne. Derrick put the entire ship in danger for leaving the wheel house to search for the drug paraphernalia. Which could have killed the entire crew to include all the cameramen that are on board. the company filming this series could sue Derrick and the CM owners for this neglect. And if the ship would have gone down there would be more lawsuits.
Derek works for the 2 brothers he answers to them they hired him and he failed to bring in crab,the boys are just that boys,they should have told Derek we are spending money and getting nothing in the tanks lets go get red crab,we are your boss.BUT they were afraid of Derek’s over the top attitude.we all know what the laws are but Derek pulled a dick move calling the police,his hole problem was he didn’t catch crab and tried to make it everybody else’s fault.he may have planted the pot but josh was dirty that’s why he split.Why didn’t Jake and josh tell Derek get the fuck off my boat when they got to port
Soon as the ship leaves the dock he is in charge. Responsilbe for the safety of everyone on board. His next job is to catch crab. Capt. Derrick now captains a tour boat, which carries much more responsibilities than a fishing boat. The pilot license for a passenger vessel is going to be much tougher to get than for a fishing vessel. There is no tour boat company that is going to put an irresponsible inexperiened captain in charge. To much liability. Minority part owners trying to take charge of a boat are out of place.

I been watching Deadliest Catch from the beginning, i love the show, how ever, this last season aboard the CM was shocking, bad attitudes, and pot smoking, u cant keep the drugs on shore for a few weeks, U know as well as anyone there’s bad seasons on the bearing sea and yet all the blame was place on capt Derrick, please, if u needed a scape goat, it should have been Jake and Steve, and wut if they had found weed onboard and took the boat would u still blame Derrick for that too, Steve looked guilty as hell at the end there along with jake sneaking off the boat like a little chicken. I’m ashamed of Josh not being more assertive about the situation on board HIS boat, If phil was alive i know he would have thrown them off the boat and you know that to be true, there’s no tolerence for drug use on a crab fishing boat, or did i miss something. The new captain could have put his law down without putting down their dad…he was the captain instead he was acting as if this was his first time behind the wheel..what is sooo sad no one made any money…..like the new captain did all that on purpose….there was a better way to talk to people still grieving for their father what a shame of course the hillstrand bro was nice in taking up for the new captain stating that he would be misunderstood…..but I can’t wait to hear his comment after he hears how that captain bad mouth phil….
In no way is it ever right to bring drugs to the work place..what u do on your off time is your business hello when those Harris brothers started to act out the captain needed to put the law down without insulting the dad that is what set off the fire storm it is the captains responsibility to keep everyone in check…those brothers felt that they had to prove something by getting on the boat someone should have talked to them and had a game plan…..The captain set the tone on the boat …..I’m in AZ..no water around and not a fisherman at all but you can see where the blame falls.I love the show….that’s real men working but yet all must remember that when a mans fathers dies and he was on his way to teaching his sons why blittle a man who is dead…….

I think both boys should sell their shares of the boat. My reasoning, Jake has not gotten the drugs out of his system, and his brother is covering for him. I have a brother and would cover for him as well, but not if it could cost other people their life. I know those two boys had a great relationship with their father, but Capt. Phil would be the first to throw Jake off that boat for drugs of any kind, because Phil worked to hard, and valued all the lives on his boat. No one was better that the other on his boat.

That’s a really good point, about Freddie leaving the boat. Besides, if you watch the show all that is said by the crew is “If you (meaning the Harris boys) leave, I’m leaving, too”. I know the show is edited and maybe more was said that we didn’t hear, but I didn’t hear Freddie say “I’m leaving the boat because of Derrick”. In my opinion, the crew was trying it’s best to be loyal to Phil by supporting Josh and Jake. That doesn’t make them right and it doesn’t make Derrick wrong. Derrick was trying to be a captain under very difficult circumstances. Being a captain means that you have to take charge and be in charge or the men won’t listen to you. If the men don’t listen, it could mean life or death in that kind of a job. I don’t think Derrick was trying to belittle Phil, by the things he said, he says he’s been a friend of Phil’s for a long time; instead I think he was trying to make the point that Phil is gone and they, meaning the whole crew, have to move on; which means listening to a different captain with a different style. That being said, I was taken aback when I heard Derrick say, “you’re father’s dead”. It sounded a bit harsh to me at the time, but as everyone has pointed out, there’s a lot edited out of the footage before the show hits the air, and maybe Derrick had already tried to say it gentler and wasn’t getting through. I don’t know and neither does anyone else on this board. If Jake and/or Josh weren’t ready to return to fishing without their dad at the helm, maybe they should have take off for a season. The bottom line is that these are fisherMEN, not boys, and they have a dangerous job. Everyone has to be 100% or they could all die. As I said before, the idea of having two share holders as crew members is probably not a good idea…too many chefs, you know? The other boats that are family owned and operated have family members as crew and they don’t always agree, but they do listen to the captain…that’s why he’s the captain. Again, if the trip ended up bad, they could always fire Derrick when they got back, but to pull the plug after eight days, didn’t give Derrick a chance to succeed. Derrick tried to explain that to them. The other boats had trouble finding crab this time around, too, but they didn’t give up and they eventually found crab. Fishing is always a gamble, and if you don’t have the stomach for it, maybe it’s not the job for you. I’m just saying. It seemed to me that Josh was trying to do what was right, but he’s inexperienced, and I think he made a bad call this time around. Hopefully, he’ll learn from this and be a better man for it. I think Josh and Derrick were trying to do what was right for the boat and the crew. Jake, Jake, Jake. I’m not trying to pick on you, but it’s time to make some tough choices. I have no idea what you are all talking about when you say “Derrick seems like a good Captain” and “they never gave him a chance”. The crews job is to pull and bait pots. The Captain is responsible for filling the pots. When you catch over 140,000 pounds less than the next boat, that figure speaks for itself. Jake put up with more of Derricks crap than I would have, especially when you consider, JAKE PAYS DERRICKS SALARY!! As soon as Derrick realized that he looked incompetent and like an ass on national television, he goes down to the engine room and pulls some crap out off of a shelf that had been there for God knows how long. Bottom line is, Derrick tried to move the blame and spotlight off of himself and his inadequacies and he threw Jake under the bus. At the end of the day, Josh and Jake did their jobs and as the Skipper, Derrick fell about 150,000 pounds short.
I think Derrick was WAY out of line. He could have handled things in a more mature way. Bottom line for him… He couldnt find the crab. I think it hurt his pride. He lashed out. Thompson, are you sure it was nor acid you took. I have tried marijuana and it does not do what you explained. Jake needs to show he is doing better but he has cameras on him all the time. He is part owner of the boat and did take a urine sample at the beginning of the season. Derrick should have left it at that. Even if they are younger than him the brothers own the boat and should be respected. He came in to hard. He needed to earn respect before trying to be so harsh on the guys. They did great before Phil passed away.

Its amazing to see how much of a responsibility Phil Harris had in regards to Jake and Josh when he passed. They are like headless chickens now with no direction or guidance.
I think if the replacement captain was more successful catching crab, the drama would not have reached the boiling point that it did. Jakes reaction made it pretty clear that he was still using. I think additional rehabilitation would benefit him in the long run, but he has to want to do it.
In closing, I certainly hope that the company that filmed the show isnt considering legal action for putting the people at risk with evidence of drug use on board.
Imagine all the drama that goes on thats “not” in the show or filmed…yikes
I vote Jake most likely to sell his ownersip of the boat and OD on heroin. I think working on these boats requires teamwork similar to brothers in arms where you know someone has your back. Phil & the loyal Samoan are of that character and Josh could be there someday, but I would never trust Jake with anything. Addicts change their perception of the world to center around their craving and try to manipulate others to seeing it their way. Lack of serotonin can take over the brain. It takes time to reverse the genetic expression of certain proteins, and Jake does not have what it takes to do anything about it.

To address Marceys post, it is not great that everyone stuck together and lied. If there was ever an accident or fatality on that boat. Jake would not have the option to test or not test. If he failed, people would go to jail, and as an owner, the boat would be gone. Derrick, who so many people think is an ass, is in charge, and there for can be charged as well.
I don’t beleive Jake has no business, being on the boat, Josh needs to kinda grow up and see that for himself, Like the season that capt phil passed, he himself caught jake stealing pills from him and told him he never wanted to see him agin, i beleive if phil was still alive he wouldv fired jake on the spot and possibly kicked his ass, for putting the boat and crew at risk. Both jake and steve i beleive were using, steve knew it, you could see it on his face, specially right at the end, i really think that’s why he’s not coming back, guilt or shame maybe, his and jake’s actions speaks volumes. Bottom line, crab or no crab the capt is the boss while that boat is at sea, no matter who owns it so Derrick was well with in his rights for reacting like he did, and boo hoo for lil baby steve, personally im glad he’s gone, he showed h9is tru colors that last trip, right from the 1st day he showed he had no respect for derrick even before they left port, he lied along with jake on how long they were gone, instead of manning up and saying yeah i know were late sorry man, but no it was f**k you i dont care who you are…and they hadnt even left the dock yet, so it had nothing to do with crab being on the boat, and the shoulder push by derrick, well i got a kick out of that, and hearing steve cry, “stop pushing me around” i bet steve was a bully in school, and like all bullies, they cant handle being pushed back. If i was derrick i wouldv fired steve the first time he said F U to me, and took an extra day to hire a new engineer, trust me, i know there’s a lot of willing guys up there willing to do the job with out cussing out the capt. So i will not be watching any of the CM parts on the show from now on, i have lost all respect for that as the world turns drama, except, maybe to watch them fail. Am i harsh, yes i am, Josh just sat there and did nothing, derrick told him to step up and he ran like a little baby when he saw what happened on the boat, did he once go to the wheel house and say derrick lets go try fishing here, looked over some of Phil’s charts with derrick? no he sat in the corner and whined, He’s no capt, never will be. Best thing he and jake could do is sell the boat to some one who actually respects Phil’s memory, they’re only there for the money that obvious, neither of them deserve that boat. Besides what jake needs is a good spanking, being on TV has gone to his head, and i recently read he got a DUI, so his days are numbered already. To the crew of the C.M. I have been watching Deadliest Catch for many years and I have to say that C.M. is one of two favorites of mine and I watched when Phil passed and it was a sad time for my wife and me. We live in Washington and we went to the Fisherman Memorial to pay our respects. I am so glad to see Derrick Ray gone. He said a lot of things he didn’t need to say and we (my wife and I ) are so glad to see that guy gone. I wish you all the very best with the new captian and with the new crew members. Keep your heads up and keep going, I am sure Phil is watching from up above, over all of you. We will be watching. We haven’t misses an episode yet. Take care and I will talk to you all later.

I feel sorry for Derrick Ray. He got himself into an untenable situation the moment he agreed to be captain of the Cornelia Marie. It is unusual to see the owners of a boat out working as deckhands and someone else as captain in the wheelhouse. Who is in charge?
As fishermen, both Josh and Jake should realize that you do not fill up the boat each and every time you go crab fishing. Sometimes it is hit or miss. This king crab season was a miss.
What nobody is realizing is that the entire fleet had a dismal few weeks in the early part of the season, the CM was no further behind any of the other boats at the point of quitting. The rest of the fleet persisted and finally got the crab while the whining Harris bros ran like cowards. Maybe Derrick would have found the crab, maybe not, but they never gave themselves a chance. Some day those girls will grow up and quit whining about their dead father. It was clear by the sort of child-like arguments Jake consistently presented that he is just an immature little stoner punk who thinks life is fair, typical of the pampered lifestyle which our youth lives today.
When a captain is hired on to a boat, his word is law. The Harris bros were told this by Derrick in the beginning. Without this sort of hierarchy a crew will fail. The Harris were wrong to use their authority as owners. Until they shut their mouths and quit thinking, they will fail.

The only reason that chump called the cops is because he couldn’t catch crab and the crew was calling him out for it. It’s called blame shifting. He had the nerve to bad mouth Phil to his kids while sitting in Phil’s chair. Bad form. He can’t catch crab so he accuses Phil of doing his kids a “disservice” by not teaching them how to do the the job they hired him to do?! Several times he tries to blame the crew for his ineptness. Also he seemed to be a little too familiar with the smell of pot to be calling the law on someone else.

Just caught “After the Catch”…if I didn’t think Josh was an a-hole from the past season he REALLY looked the part in this show….and little baby-with his finger in his mouth Jake STILL looking high!!!! 1. Jake did not look high. Some people read way to much into these things.
2. Josh was acting like a man of his youth. Passionate and a little loud. That’s what you do at that age. What amazes me is that Derrick lost his cool too. He is a bit older, I thought he would have kept it together a tad more.
I think Sig played it cool. He tried to see it from all angles. Notice Sig did not defend Derricks remarks regarding Phil.As a matter of fact no one at the table did.
And as far as Derrick never having a chance on that boat. UM..Really? Does that mean NO future captain has a chance? Oh wait, the next one has already meshed with the crew in a much more positive and productive way. So, myth busted.

I think you saw exactly what you wanted to see. It was painfully obvious that all the Captains present wanted to justify Derrick’s actions but could not say anything while also staying neutral. The producer said it himself, “it was the same with Derrick as it was with Phil every day, the boys would argue with him and Phil would have to shut them down.” Every Captain at that table had nothing but good to say about Derrick. They got the same message across by complimenting Derrick as they would have by telling the boys to shut up and listen for once. They argued with their pop on every episode. Phil always came to the same conclusion, “those boys will be ready when they shut up and start listening”. Their own father consistently talked about their “know it all” attitudes. Are you so blind as to not see the same snot nosed punks whining about Derrick just as they did their father? The only difference is that Derrick could not slap the shit out of them like their father could! The boys are only feeling sorry for themselves because their father died, well boo-hoo, get over it kids, you’re not the only children to lose a parent. Captain Kieth said it best when he said “welcome to the world of owning a boat”, responding to the boys’ whining about going in the hole financially. Those Captains have never held back when putting forth their opinion, last nite they only complimented Derrick’s experience. Did you once hear any person back up the boys? They all kept their mouths shut because they knew what Phil knew, these are just two immature, mouthy, know-nothing children. If Josh put half the effort into listening and learning as he does into that ridiculous pimp facial hair he might be running the boat by now. And is everybody forgetting the paraphernalia found on the boat? And Jake running to the airport like a scared rabbit? You state that the Captains did not defend Derricks remarks, well no kidding! How could they while staying neutral. Instead of backing his comments they gave a full compliment to his experience as a captain, while never saying anything good about the boys. That says it all. Derrick may not have fit, but that is no excuse for the crew to act as they did. Have you not noticed that most of the crews on the show are never happy with the captain, that is until payday. And please describe “looking high”. How could you possible tell somebody is high or not from a television? Those boys need a lesson in accountability. The only word they should concentrate on for the time being is SHUT UP! Maybe then they’ll grow up.
I recall that even the producer who stepped in to break up Derrick and the Harris brothers noted that Josh acted the same way on the boat as he did at the interview: shooting his mouth off and not listening to anyone.
I also watched the show and the After the Catch episode last night, and formed my own opinions, for what they’re worth. “The boys”, which is what I will call them, just to differentiate them from all the other brothers on the show (i.e. The Hillstrands, The Hansens, Kieth and Mouse) made a lot of mistakes with Derrick. Derrick make a LOT of mistakes on the Cornelia Marie. Many have commented on how the other Captains complimented him on his abilities. I also noted a comment from Keith, or maybe Andy, that “everyone has a reputation, whether they like it or not”. No one elaborated on what his reputation is. They all said he has been a good captain and fisherman. I think the operative phrase here is “has been”, in all it’s connotations. For the past 5 years he has been making his living off Deadliest Catch by running a tourist operation focusing on the lifestyle of the show. He did well during last year’s Opelio season as a relief Captain. As a fill-in, in other words. He, in effect, broke up a family on the Cornelia Marie, with his arrogant, know-it-all attitude. He’s claimed that he puts his arrogance aside when he goes ashore, but I saw no evidence of that last night. What I saw was a supposedly mature adult unable to deal with the disappointment and anger he generated in both an employer and employee. The fact that the majority owner, Cornelia, wouldn’t back him up against Josh and Jake speaks volumes.
As Capt. Lara has stated above, he earned the respect of the crew, and respects them in turn. Derrick came on board with an attitude, denigrating Capt. Phil and his methods, which, in my opinion, is no way to start a new job. Derrick Ray seems to have no grasp of the concept that the Discovery Channel can edit an episode however it chooses, so every action will shine a magnifying glass on every character flaw or virtue displayed. Physically assaulting your employees is a major bad move, especially on national TV. So the boat is bad shape? Who had the money for repairs over the summer? The boat has made money for decades, except the 2 weeks he was in charge. If he can’t calculate fuel costs accurately, whose fault is that? Capt. Tony has caught more crab on one episode in the middle of the worst Opelio season weather in recent years than Derrick did in 6 episodes. Frankly, if the elusive blue crab was the only option because the Cornelia Marie had to lease their red crab quota, they probably should have waited for Opeilio season in the first place.
Josh seems to be more of the business man of the brothers, and would benefit from some classes in that area as well as Captain’s school. People skills would also be a good idea. And counseling for himself and his brother to deal with the loss of their father appears to be vital.
As for Jake, while he has appeared to be in much better shape so far this season, a recovering addict can always benefit from support from every source possible. A Captain who will be supportive and firm instead of constantly suspicious and derogatory will be a vast improvement over his recent experience. Accountability is essential, so perhaps Capt. Lara should stock some home drug test kits next season to periodically verify Jake’s assertions that he’s clean, and if not, Jake can deal with the consequences.
Basically, my opinion is that Derrick Ray came on board the Cornelia Marie to prove he still has what it takes to fish the Bering Sea no matter who he had to walk on to do so. He brought out the worst in his employees, disregarded the bottom line for his employers, and demonstrated a significant lack of management ability. His repeated demonstration of his significant disregard for his reputation or that of his employers would make me hesitate to offer him employment in any capacity whatsoever.
Josh and Jake proved that they have a lot to learn and need lessons in how to listen. They also demonstrated that they are fisherman at heart, because if all they wanted to do was make money on TV, they could have gone to work on another boat on the show and left their aunt to deal with the Cornelia Marie (although that might be a challenge for Jake with his issues).
How could you possibly know what Cornelia and Derrick relationship was? How could you know how much money was available? How could you possibly know how much money the boat has made over the decades? Tony caught more crab? The entire fleet was in the exact same shape as the cornelia at the same moment the children quit and fired Derrick, but the rest of the fleet persevered and finally got crab. As you say, the editing can change everything. Lack of Management ability? Just as the other Captains said; he was doomed before he ever set foot on the boat.Get your facts straight and quit making unsubstantiated conclusions.
Exactly, JB. I cannot believe all the homers posting all their ‘Wah! Wah! Wah! Leave poor Jake and Josh alone!’ bullshit. Read what you want into what the captains did and didn’t say on Agter the Catch,, but Edgar Hansen has gone on record saying he would’ve done the same damn thing if he’d been captain of the CM. They tend to forget that Jake not only stole pills from his dad, but he ‘borrowed’(for lack of a better term) Phil’s credit card and bought a fucking flatscreen TV for his bunk on the boat. I guess he was such an ignorant, selfish, thieving asshole that he thought Phil wouldn’t notice. And the fact tha Josh won’t call him out just enables Jake further and diminishes any credibility Josh may have left. So, all you Jake & Josh bromancers just keep on blaming their many shortcomings as human beings on others…it only makes you look as foolish as they do.
It’s not surprising that so many focus so much attention on Jake and his problems. The fact of the matter is that Jake has a problem and it needs tending.
They have both been thrust into a position that they were not expecting. I think we can all agree on that.
NOw I don’t know if many of you know much about the fishing industry past Deadliest Catch. The truth of the matter is that drug problems and usage are a major ongoing reality through all fleets. The show has hinted at this reality many times.
It is also true that they tend to handle these issues in house. They are a close knit industry and tend to do things their own way sans the authorities.
If you think the only person on that boat doing drugs was Jake you would be making a short sighted assumption.
You can not blame Jake and Josh for Derricks actions. Here is a man with many years experience and intimate knowledge of the situation he was entering. You mean to tell me he did not think ahead and formulate a plan other than dropping in like a Navy Seal team?
The captain that replaced Derrick had a completely different approach and attitude. He was real and he was positive. He did what a captain in that very unique situation should do. Walk the fine line and bond with the crew.
Derrick is not Phil. Phil could shut HIS kids down in a way no other man should.
Like it or not, those two kids are part owners and the deal was to teach them. Derrick fail on the teaching part. He failed on bonding with his crew. With those two failures he lost the opportunity to fish. His situation was unique yes, however with his experience he should have been able to circumvent those challenges. Instead he was bullheaded. It’s not rocket science.
The bottom line is that the boys are back on theCM and Derrick is not. If you read other forums you would know that Derrick claimed Cornelia was done with Discovery and the boat. Hmmm..Guess he was wrong.
Jake needs to wise up and he and Josh will. Just keep watching.

Dearest JB, et al, I of course don’t know the personal relationship between Derrick Ray and Cornelia. I do see the results of their business relationship as proven by the fact that he no longer captains the boat. If she supported him, as majority owner, he would still be there and “the boys” would have to like it or leave it. I got my “crab count” from the show – at the end of 6 episodes (when he was fired), DR had caught 21k lbs. At the end of 1 episode, Capt. Tony had caught 28k lbs. Therefore, Capt. Tony caught more. Is my math incorrect?
The lack of money can be deduced from the fact that they had to lease their red crab quota to obtain the funds to begin the season. That would also indicate limited budget for repairs. The fact that the money ran out far sooner than expected indicates that DR did not do a good job estimating the costs – the Captain’s responsibility. Not good financial management. The fact that DR could not keep even one crew memeber’s support indicates that he is not able to manage his employees. Where in fact did he display GOOD management abilities? He was not “doomed from the start”, as evidenced by the fact that the next person to Captain the boat had great results. Obviously it was not the crew, it was the Captain who was responsible for the total failure of the season. I will grant you, of course, that going after blue crab did make the situation more difficult, but not impossible, as evidenced by the fact that the Seabrooke caught their entire quoata of blue crab.

Neither party shows well in this case. However, the Captain of the boat should be held to a higher standard, especially with “26 years of experience”. EVERYTHING on the boat is his responsibility, including the physical well-being and morale of his crew. He failed miserably in that area, to say the least. A physical altercation with a crew member? Derogatory comments regarding the boat and crew to 3rd parties? How is that safeguarding his people? His ego knew no bounds, he was uwilling to answer to an owner (even if only 1/4) for his management, and the list goes on.
One thing to consider regarding the other Captain’s reactions. What Captain in their right mind is going to go on national television and take the side of crew memebers who in effect conducted mutiny on the high seas? Although the fact that 2 of them are part owners in the enterprise makes the mutiny issue questionable. Is it infact mutiny if you hired the Captain and are part owner?
In conclusion, dearest JB, where from my comments do you infer that I condone Jake’s drug use, or Josh’s loud behavior? I specifically stated that they both need schooling in a number of areas, and that Jake should be kept accountable for his actions. Nowhere did I say they should be “left alone”. They obviously have a lot to learn and some growing up to do. What they don’t need is an obnoxious know-it all with a chip on his shoulder trying to prove to the world that he still has what it takes, and the manners of a slug.

One thing I learned in the Marines is leadership. And frankly I could care less what Edgar said. I know what I saw, and I saw poor leadership.
As to my comment on drug use in fishing fleets through out the world. I happen to know a lot of people from the Great Lakes and up into Alaska. And the truth my friend is there is still a lot of drug use in that industry. Pot is the least of the problem. It is now cocaine and meth. The get up and go drugs that are perfect for these types of seasons.
Bottom line is Derrick is not back and the boys are. The 75 percent owner of the boat had a lot to say about that OI am sure. So reading between the lines and the TV bites it seems to me a business decision was made at some point and it did not include Derrick. Hmmmm, interesting. I wonder why…

Derrick was too hot headed, the boys still too green. In this case, I have to look to the Captain, not the boys to rise up and be a LEADER. Not unlike what our drill instructors did to us in boot camp. They shaped us into Marines.
Derrick missed out on a great opportunity.
One last thing. Let us not simply focus on the two brothers. The rest of the crew was not happy either. Derrick getting into a physical altercation with Steve was also uncalled for. He treated the entire crew like garbage.
If it were the Marines he would have gotten away with it. But them fishing boats are not the Marines.

Just saw “After the Catch”. Josh is showing some backbone finally. He stood up to that a**hole Derrick, AND he stood up for his brother. His dad would be proud. Josh – go for it. Bust your butt and learn from the new cap – YOU can do it. Forget about Jake – he’s got too much growing up to do. Step it up – you CAN do it. Apply yourself and you’ll be captaining soon. Look into the Motor Life Boat Training school at Ilwaco and learn from the Coasties about piloting in rough seas – it couldn’t hurt. Good for you – I’m a little ashamed of the other captains being all politically correct and not calling out Derrick on his bad behavior and disrespect for the crew. He was just there on an ego trip and trying to throw his weight around – that is NOT the mark of a good leader. Go Josh go!

when derrick got on the boat he started to take on the entire crew. bullying them, shoving steve. they lost respect for him before they left the dock. you have to have respect for your captain so you will follow him in the rough times. like when it was time to quit. derrick as the leader put josh and jake down, tried to make them feel bad about themselves so they would do it derricks way. he he did not have their respect for the crew to follow his orders.then when derrick lost the battle he tried to redeem himself by “showing” how high jake was, so he could blame jake for his lack of leadership skills. see “i told you he was high” that’s why the entire crew wouldn’t follow me. yeah right, give me a break. derrick blew it by his misstreatment of the crew.

I despise Jake and avoid the TV when the CM is on now. He is a spoiled druggie who will ruin his fathers inheritance. Anyone who knows addicts knows that he is too defensive and evasive to be “Cured” after rehab. Also there was no mention of the drugs in “after the Catch” and the new capt stated that Jake still has “personal issues” to take care of. Jake probably negotiated that in advance for showing up.
I am sad that Josh is being such a jerk. I thought there was hope for him. It seems that the children are too stuck on themselves as TV stars and love the attention. They will quit after the series ends.
Derrick was as aggressive as any capt would be. He told the boys nothing different than their father and in the same tone of voice. The others at the table were reserved out of politeness. Sid did say that Derrick’s reputation was good. I would fish with him anytime. At least I know I would be safe. None of those captains ever had to deal with a mutiny like this.
Phil was a good man. I agree with his friend Derrick that he didn’t teach the boys how to be men before he died. Even Phil said this.
I think Jake’s drug addiction is what killed his father prematurely. He knows it as well but, like his addiction, hides it. He knew he was stabbed in the back by his son. He still loved his boys. Too bad they only love themselves. They make me sick.
I still wager that at least one will OD or be arrested in the near future.

Josh is a good boy. He was the adult trying to take care of his dad in the last days. He’s showing his stuff more and more, and he’s not doing it to show off for the cameras. He’s thinking ahead and trying to do right by his dad…he is just learning “how” to step up, and he’ll figure it out. He’s doing it every day – time to get serious, Josh, and just do it. Don’t let anyone detract you, including your brother. Derrick is old enough – he should have known that you don’t walk onto an established boat and turn everything around on a dime without first gaining the respect and support of the crew. Any military officer knows that – that’s how they’re trained. You turn it around to your way of doing things by showing that you know what you’re doing. that “last shot across the bow” stuff was so immature and spiteful – he didn’t belong there. Sig said he had a good reputation…however, he really blew it with that poor display. He was supposed to teach the boys, and he just condescended to them. Pushing around Steve, when Steve was the same place as Jake was (and he didn’t yell at Jake – who is part owner) – that was cowardly and bullying. Steve was a good guy and I’m glad he stood up to that blowhard as well. The new cap looks like a good guy. Some guys, like Derrick, are just bad and he should have stayed retired. Yes, Phil should have been more demanding of his kids, but they are learning things the hard way now, and that’s ok. Josh has his head in the right place, he just needs to get serious and learn. His father didn’t give him enough credit.

I understand your point although you are wrong. I am not evil and speak from experience.
We can’t assume we know everything from such a short 1 hour program. But there are a few things we can deduct from what was shown and reading everything about the family (not just at this website) before we state our opinions.
I have family who ruined themselves as Jake is doing. I have also worked with drug programs & have about 30 years in the medical field. Yes, Phil was a health disaster on the verge. I mentioned that Jake stealing his father’s meds most likely accelerated his demise from the shock of the discovery, but you can believe it was coincidence. That is a possibility. My wife, an RN, came to the same conclusion as I before we discussed our opinions. In the back of his mind, I think Jake believes the same and will try to bury the guilty thoughts until he truly faces his addictive demons and the Pandora’s box of denials are released. When it finally comes to the surface, then Jake can forgive himself and possibly be at peace with his father. With half the world coddling him, he will wallow in the well intentioned, but enabling praise from folks like you. I mean no disrespect to you. Like I said, your desire to praise the kids is well intentioned.
On another topic, I know something about leadership. As a retired military officer of 24 years, I have seen lots of arrogant children like Jake & Josh come and go. Sometimes you can capture their attention long enough to help them realize that they don’t know everything. I am very proud of the many folks I mentored over the years and they still keep in touch. Quite a few of them became officers or senior NCOs and are now my peers. I am proud to have served my country and humbled to have had the honor of commanding such wonderful youth. The others that can’t handle authority just leave after their first enlistment. Like Phil and Derrick said, the kids need to listen. If someday that happens, there is hope.
Either way, Jake & Josh are arrogant rich babies. They are not leaders and will risk the boat with their egos. I still hope that someday they learn humility and respect for others like their dad did. Perhaps then they will have earned some respect.
By the way, I didn’t like Derrick pushing Steve either. But as Captain, Derrick had to have full control. I think he might have been able to accomplish it differently.
Remember, this is just a reality show. I like it since I fish Alaskan waters and my grandson lives here.

You are presuming and projecting way too much when you say Jake is responsible for Phil’s death, regardless of your “30 years in the medical field” – whatever that may have been. Your assumption is wreckless and stupid. Phil’s abuse of himself through drugs, etc., started well before Jake was even born. Phil was very sick before that incident you mentioned. I am not praising the boys. Jake is making very poor life choices. I am, however, encouraging Josh. Josh showed courage and spine in standing up to Derrick, who is clearly an egomaniacal jackass who does not know how to LEAD. He only knows how to throw his weight around and expect people to kowtow. Some have Positional authority – others have Personal authority. Derrick only had Positional authority, and he used it poorly. And, no one wants to hear your little chest-thumping speech about your military career – I had one, too. So have a lot of people. Doesn’t make you good. You are aggregiously wrong in blaming Jake for his father’s early death. Phil was on borrowed time for a long time, and it was because of his own poor life choices, God rest his soul.

Egregiously wrong? I’d be happy to debate my position any time based on available evidence. I’ve seen the insides of both diseases from the genetic control of dopamine expression systems to lots of post-mortems. I didn’t say Jake killed Phil. I said his addiction created a condition that pushed the effects of Phil’s existing coronary artery disease and COPD to a point of excess. Stress will do that. It was a shock when Phil caught his kid red-handed and everything suddenly made sense to him. Most fathers’ blood pressure would skyrocket at this point and I am sure Phil was no different. I believe there is a relationship. I respect that you might see this as coincidence. I further believe someday Jake will realize that he may have contributed. That realization could push him over the edge. Hopefully not. You might interpret my statements as reckless, but I see that people who defend his behavior just because they feel sorry for him are enabling his addiction. I feel sorry for his loss, too. I just despise his current personality.
If you were in the military, I am sure you ran into “barracks attorneys”. They were people who pretended to know everything, believed conspiracy theories about anyone above their E-1 rank and would argue about anything. Some of these little know-it-alls had a position of responsibility in boot camp and were shocked that they didn’t keep it after they graduated. Both Harris boys sure seem to have a lot in common with these bone heads. It isn’t until they learn to listen that they have a chance. Understanding what they hear would be a plus.
I liked Josh until he showed off his incapability to control himself. As far as his character, he always came across as more mature than his brother. He appeared to be there for his father. I did respect that.
As I look back over your posts, I see that you are correct in not defending Jake directly. You do defend him as you attacked my opinion. After some review it seems that for the most part, we personally disagree with whether Josh was a jerk or not. Neither of us is wrong on that. To you, he is fine. I lost some respect for him. I just don’t think a man must be an out of control fighter to show strength.
As we both saw in the military and hated it, positional authority trumps personal authority. The one who is accountable for others must have that power. I mentioned my service only to support my years of studying & teaching leadership. However you brought this up as you stated what you thought officers were trained to do and I disagreed. I didn’t intend to boast and if I came across that way, I apologize. Thousands of others gave more than I ever did.

Again, you are intent on placing blame on one incident – a familial fight that happens all the time in many families that deal with addictions – refusing to face the fact that chain-smoking, hard-drinking, drug-taking Phil himself was an addict and had done all the damage to himself well before that incident occurred. You just want to blame a stupid kid, instead of recognizing that the Responsibility of Phil’s condition started and ended with Phil. He set a real fine example for his kids, didn’t he? OK. You “win”.
It’s pretty clear to me that the Josh/Jake relationship is changing, as well. Josh is taking the lead as older brother, even though he came into fishing after Jake did. Josh did call Jake during Phil’s hospital stay. They are still brothers, and Josh still has to have Jake’s cooperation as they share ownership of the boat, which is a tricky situation – so he can’t just blow him out of the water. Phil would want them to get along, and getting along is sometimes difficult, but they have to keep trying. josh is his brother, not his father, so he can’t lay down the law. Look at the Wizard – those brothers get along like brothers, even though one is the Captain. I think they will eventually work things out be able to work together, and I think Josh will take the lead. I haven’t met a man yet who is a “man” until he’s at least 35-40, so they do have some time in growing up to do.
It may be that after a period of time no intermediary captain will be able to pilot the Cornelia Marie. It didn’t appear that Derrick had problems with the crew, minus Jake, right after Phil’s death. Now after an acrimonious divorce from Derrick the crew now gets along well with their new captain. It seems the crew grants a sort of “honeymoon” period to the new captains until their innate dysfunctions get the best of their good behavior. Anyone sitting in Phil’s chair is a reminder of their loss and their inability to run the family business. It might be better for those boys to intern on other boats to learn those skills necessary to lead a crew and captain a vessel. Lease out the Cornelia Marie to another captain on an interim basis and when the boys are ready take back the boat. Jake and Josh need to get their act together before they can heal and move forward in a positive direction. That remains to be seen doesn’t it?
Apparently, you missed the episode where Derrick chest-bumped Steve (and not in a good way) and verbally abused and threatened him. the rest of the crew thought he was a real ass because he came in with the wrong attitude. The new guy – Tony – will do well.
As a recovering adict, in my case alcohol I know first hand the things that go with it. Hiding items, being avasive, the whole lot.
Recovering from any adiction is hard and needs support from family, friends and others. It is too easy for those who have never suffered to condem the adict.

I was fortunate that I was able to get the support and love of those around me including the support of AA. I was working at the time for an electronics company and my boss was very supportive but he left for pastures new. The new boss was just like derrick and used any and every thing to make me out to be the bad guy.
I knew that I had to go or find myself back on the bottle. As a leader he was very bad, as a person he was well balanced, a chip on each shoulder. Strangly he was made to leave a few months later after all his staff ‘put in their notice’ giving the same reason for leaving, the bosses attitude.
Leaders are born they are not made, training will bring out the best in people who can lead and the worst in those who cannot.
I, for one, could not believe the way the Cornelia Marie was being run. Yes the two lads were unhappy, be honest they had lost their Father and a GOOD captain would have made allowances for that. A decent human being would have done the same, first time out without Dad was always going to be hard on everybody.
I wish the crew and the owners of the CM success and a safe future.
Did everyone forget that Jake took a test for the new Captain Tony, And passed? I don’t think he was smoking pot at all…I honestly think it was Freddie ( I love Freddie, and he can do what he wants) Everyone blamed it on Jake because he had a ‘pill’ problem, has overcome that. Why did Freddie leave the CM? Jake and Josh did not want to get Freddie in trouble! They were a family, The boat ran great until Derrik came and ruined it all..I’ve watched the show for 5 years and never saw a captain treat ANYONE on any of the boats the way he treated that crew, no matter what they did or didn’t do, he should’ve acted like a captain, not a Marine Sargent!!
I also wanted to say My husband and I both agree with Karl2300….I think the shock of Jake stealing from him pushed him into the stroke…his blood pressure was so high and he was shaking uncontrolably. I don’t think it would have happened when it did..eventually it would have, but not so soon. He did abuse himself with drugs and alcohol for so many years, but everything with Jake definately did not help his poor health!
Again, if Phil’s condition were not already dire, that incident would not have been something that you want to blame the kid for. Maybe you’ll piss someone off and they’ll die soon after, and everyone can blame you, and you’ll see what ridiculous conclusions you are jumping to. Phil shouldn’t have been on the boat at all after his aneurism.
Here’s somethin for you worthless blowhards that have no clue about anything. I say Phil did a fine job, Jake is a chip off the old block! He drug whipped himself into the grave, and paved that road for his kids just fine. So if his big discovery about Jake’s taking his drugs was so hard on him, I’d guess it was his own responsibility in it that hurt the most. When I was in the depths of my addiction I cheated and stole and lied from everyone, and family was the easiest target. There’s alot of not caring and not thinking involved with addiction. That’s how it works. Here’s also how it works….it never goes away, and you don’t always win.
Guilty or not Jake did the right thing by refusing and leaving like he did. Jail is no place to get sober, and it looks like he’s working his program, I wish him luck. And to have a brother like Josh to have his back…well that’s another thing Phil can be proud of.
It’s so obvious that little Jake is still doing dope. Jumps ship and heads straight to the airport without any clothes and then declines a drug test. If he was clean there would be no problems…nothing to hide. His name is not “clean” and I’m sure his father is looking down from heaven very disappointed. And Josh really needs to grow up….going off like he did just shows how much of an adult he is not….disappointing CM.
That is a risk whenever you are with someone in Phil’s condition. My father had to quit playing chess when the intensity would give him chest pain. A greater emotional event would have given him a similar outcome as Phil.
You are spot on that he shouldn’t have been on the boat after the pulmonary embolus, but Phil didn’t always do as he was told. I blame the kid’s addiction for pushing Jake to get caught & start the cascade, just as it was a wave that bumped Phil’s leg giving him the particle that lodged in his lung.

Jake is a thief, asshole AND an addict….not a thief and asshole because he’s an addict. If you’re going to say Phil shouldn’t have been on the boat in his condition, then for sure Jake shouldn’t have been on the boat in HIS condition. Jake being on the boat endangered others’ lives. All the other considerations are moot. And speaking of addiction, Jake and Josh are both addicted to the fame and notoriety of being on TV. When they no longer have the TV show to feed THAT addiction, we’ll see what they’re truly made of.

Jake’s YOUR romantic interest, Peanut. There’s a psychiatric term for the type of ‘misdirection’ you just tried to pull with the crack about Derrick to cover your obvious fetish for young men with drug and behavioral problems like Jake, but the term currently escapes me(though I’m sure a pompous know-it-all like you can tell us). There is something seriously wrong with you and ALL of your ASSumptions. You think I am “pompous” and a “know-it-all” – I am educated, and ROTC trained, and I have spent time on boats, and I know a lot about leadership. I also know that it is pure evil and mean-spirited to blame the son for the sins (or the death) of the father. I don’t fawn, and I don’t love, support or enable addicts. I also don’t place blame where it doesn’t belong. I hold addicts (like Phil) responsible for their own actions. I applaud Josh for standing up to Derrick who is way too old to charge into a new command, acting like a complete ass. He should have known better. His approach was wrong and abusive. I applaud Josh for wanting to learn, and for making an executive decision on the fly that this “captain” was not working out – Derrick gained no respect from the crew, instead, he alienated all of them, and to top it off – he didn’t find the crab. He’s useless, and he cost CM and boys a lot of money. Time to go Derrick – simple decision – and Josh made it, showing his leadership already. Yeah, so what, he yelled. So does EVERYONE ELSE on that show on every boat – men yell – grow up. You also ASSume that I am male, which I find insulting, based on what we have seen here.

All of this talk about Jakes problem contributing to Phil’s death is a little mind boggling.
We are talking about a man who self admittedly has abused his own body for many years. Phil was a casualty waiting to happen.
Now, in his condition could added stress puch him over the edge? I am sure that is a good probability. However, we must also keep in mind that stress ws no new factor in the equation for Phil. He has been dealing with stress his whole fishing life. Stress the likes most people never see. See the impact Jake had on him was marginal at best. Phil was a ticking time bomb. He will be missed, let’s just leave it at that.
As for Jake and Josh..
BOYS? Hmmm, interesting. Perhaps we have all forgotten where these BOYS grew up and the lifestyle they have lived. THey have grown up in the harsh environment of the fishing industry. They are a little tougher than most and have endured a great deal as a result. They have more grit than your average suburban bred. Do they show signs of youth? Of course duh.
And let’s face it people, crab fishermen are not the personification of Corporate Mature. These are hard drinking and hard living men. YOu put Derrick or any of them in a corporate environment and they would be like fish out of water. Josh and Jake are acting like any men in their particular industry. Brash, loud spoken and unfiltered.
I will say again, all the focus on Jakes drug problems are magnified because of the show and warrant less drama than it’s receiving. Derrick simply handled the situation poorly. And he handled his job as captain poorly.
Does Jake need to handle his personal issues. Of course. And chances are he will, or he will fail. We shall see.
I have a feeling that necessity will be the guiding light here. Hats off to Josh for keeping his relationship with Jake OFF CAMERA. I would wager he has had many heart to heart talks with his brother when the cameras are not around. I know I would if it were my brother.
It’s all very entertaining and I will continue to follow.

Oh, almost forgot, Mr/Ms APACKIA, I never pinned Phil’s death on either of his sons. YOU posted that Phil shouldn’t have been on the boat after his aneurism and I said if Phil shouldn’t have been on the boat, then, for sure Jake shouldn’t have been on the boat in HIS condition. How about reading other’s posts over a bit more thoroughly before leading the charge up San Juan Hill.
Vance, that was a well thought out and balanced post. My only quibble with it is the praise for Josh. Of course, that is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I tend to believe that both Jake and Josh are in love with the ego-feed and notoriety that being on TV provides to them. My main point in this whole affair was and remains Jake and his being on a boat while not in command of his addiction.

However, if we are going to keep it real. Every man out their is benefiting from being on TV. It’s a window few get to enjoy. When these guys are on deck in rough seas, the camera is the last thing on their minds. Remember, we only see the “good footage”
I’ve been at sea on an aircraft carrier in rough seas. A VERY BIG ship and that was no joke. So, on these little boats I am certain simply being on TV is not the priority.
As to my praise of Jake, it goes beyond TV bites. He has made appearances on talk radio and on some sites. He is handling himself pretty damn well.
His answers in regards to his brother are well thought out and cautious. It is obvious that he is careful in his responses. He is thinking about the future that shows clearly.
I like the way he answers in regards to his brother, he is trying to keep as much close to the cuff as he can. WHich is hard since they have cameras in their face much of the time.
As to Jakes addiction…
Again, this is nothing new in the fishing industry. It’s an old demon and these men have handled it many times in the past and will continue to do so.
I’m not on those boats nor am I in a position to determine what is best. HOwever, knowing that these men have dealt with this before and I am sure worse cases, Jake is in good hands and so are the crews.
I really like how the new CM captain dealt with Jake. Derrick, not so much.
Further more, (FYI) Haver any of you read any of Derricks rants on other sites? OMG.. Seriously? I will let you google it. lol

I would have to agree, this site is almost as entertaining as the show…almost. It’s kind of funny to see people writing about poor leadership, outbursts, bullies etc., on the part of Derrick and the crew of Cornelia Marie, and all the while proclaiming their superior knowledge, skills and abilities, who then resort to name calling, insults, criticisms and bullying against people they have met or even seen. I guess everyone is a little braver when they’re sitting in the comfort of their own homes in front of a computer screen. The people that are being condoned and condemned are real people in real life situations in what is called the most dangerous job in the world. They are battling real dangers out there, and need everyone at their best 100 % of the time. There’s no time for weekend hangovers. Derrick was the captain, like him or not. He was in charge, like it or not. He makes the calls…period, end of conversation. That’s why there is a captain and not a committee. It’s not a democracy. If he doesn’t work out, you fire him after the trip, but until then, you follow his orders – agree or not. He didn’t put anyone in danger; he didn’t make poor decisions that involved the safety of the boat or crew. He was in charge and it was agreed upon in advance that he would run the boat HIS WAY. That’s what he did.
As for Phil, lay off. Phil was Phil. He lived his life the way he wanted –hard and fast – no apologies; no regrets. He took responsibility for his own actions. My hat’s off to him. We need more men like that in the world, even if for a short time, to remind the rest of us what real living is all about.
As for Josh – he needs to man up. He’s getting there, but he’s not there yet. I respect him trying to defend his brother, but there comes time when you have to lay it out there, and Josh needs to stop being diplomatic and politically correct and get on with the business of learning how to run a crab boat, or he needs to consider other employment. If one man dies because someone on the crew is stoned, and wasn’t at his best when he was needed, then that’s the captains responsibility. It’s not a personal decision for the crew to decide whether or not they can be high, it’s the captain’s. I hope Josh never has to face that situation and learn that lesson the hard way. I suspect Derrick has seen a lot in his career and knows what happens when things go bad. That being said, his personal relationship with his brother is his business, and he should handle it the way he sees fit.
As for Jake – he needs a major attitude adjustment in addition to working on his addiction. He too, is not there yet. He has a long road head of him. His demeanor toward Derrick from the first day was one of defiance and disrespect. He started the trip off on the wrong foot, and never recovered. Derrick tried to teach him to captain the boat, and it went well; then the next time in the wheel house Jake shows up smelling of pot – no one was there, but Derrick, so just accept it – the kid smelled of pot. That was before the trip went bad so don’t try to say Derrick was just pissed at being fired – it was before that. Derrick was right to be pissed and not to trust Jake. Jake has the job of earning everyone’s respect back – he’s the addict. Derrick was the captain – you have to respect the title if not the man.
I don’t agree with everything Derrick did or the way he did it, but I’m not a fisherman and I’m not a captain. Derrick is a fisherman, not a diplomat. He is what he is. All of the captains have gone berserk at one time or another; all have gotten into with their crew, their brothers, and sons and their fellow captains, for that matter. They are real people, not actors. They’re dealing with real life, not a script.
@Vance…lol. I was wondering if you were talking about the same Jake I was. Correction noted. And, to clarify, I didn’t mean to insinuate that Jake was the only person in the fleet with an addiction problem. He’s just the most convenient because he’s on the show and the issue, his issue, is being spotlighted. Further, a production assistant recently got busted on one of the boats selling coke, pot, meth and oxy to the crew, so I understand this isn’t an individual problem, just the only one being featured.
@CM…I agree, a captain has to be the last word…at least until the ship docks.
