Bible Study from the Deadliest Catch?

Capt. Phil by Katrin Lueck

Capt. Phil by Katrin Lueck

Is it possible the Discovery Channel reality show we all love for it’s authentic display of real life drama can be a course for Bible Study?  Apparently so… I found this site called “Deadliest Catch Bible Study” on our Deadliest Catch Social Network.  This is for real – here’s an excerpt from the site on why he choose this TV show to use as a course to study the Bible.

Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel is not scripted, although it is edited.  Even with editing, it remains gritty, emotional, and some might find it “offensive”; it is not for everyone. Remember that the Lord himself, was not crucified in a church between two candles, but in what was a dump outside Jerusalem, between two thieves, a place where people cursed and were cursed at, made money and gambled it away, prospered, merely survived or perished.  Remember that people can be a perplexing combination of both sinner and saint.  And there is no place where the action of God’s grace cannot reach.

Plus, the first ones the Lord called to journey by his side were… fishermen (Simon, Andrew, James and John).  The Lord first called those who were tough, used to long workdays, could get things done, and deal with the disappointment of empty nets. Deadliest Catch may indeed be a very appropriate tool to engage in devotions or Bible study.

I think this is a very interesting concept. I consider myself a Christian, but not necessarily religious, and am generally offended by the hypocracy I observe in churchy Christians. There is so much to admire in the men portrayed on Deadliest Catch that I can understand why it is appealing to use them as examples. God is there for all people, earthy profane fisherman as well as pious Christian hypocrites. And I think He may prefer the company of the fishermen.

Well said, Muriel! Jesus wasn’t the nice white guy with a halo that we so commonly think of. He is a man’s man. Anyone that can know that he’s going to face the worst kind of torture and death known to man and look it square in the eye is a man’s man.
That’s exactly why fishermen, like the men on Deadliest Catch, can relate to him. It’s why following Jesus isn’t just a crutch or for wimps.

I browsed the studies and they actually do say some pretty good stuff, things both viewers and fishermen alike can relate to.

I should have added above that not all Christians are hypocrites. In fact, probably most are not. I know many wonderful people who emulate God’s love. It’s just that there are enough of the others to give them a bad image. The man who was wise enough to develop a bible study based on these great men is probably one of the good guys.

As a fan of The Deadliest Catch, real men can show that God is a large part of there lives. Although the show has some real emotions, sometimes colorful, God can still live and lead the lives of any one who believes in Him. Keep the Bible Studies going!

Muriel, I couldn’t agree more. The Man was born in a barn and died in a dump. That speaks volumes as to what Christianity is really about. Humility is the cornerstone that the faith is built upon, but is sadly lacking in many of its members.
I always knew there was a reason that God chose fishermen as the first leaders in His church. And the above couldn’t have said it better. Thanks Bob!

When the season start, all the seamen and the boats are blessed by a pastor.

This has to mean that the crew has strong faith in the Lord to protect and help them, in every difficult situations.

Must the lord Jesus Christ bless you all on the Cornelia Marie.

Maybe this is why women watch. ;) Despite the “bad juju” references, seems to me we like to see real men…makes us understand the real woman. I haven’t checked out the bible study yet….but I can see the potential. Takes a lot to throw your life on the line. Safe fishing!
    Love you all,

I have included a disclaimer in the Season 5 Lesson of the Deadliest Catch Bible Study involving the Time Bandit: [Please bear in mind that this scene, as well as others in the series, may have been enhanced or contrived through the editing process. Yet, the illustration it provides is powerful.]
I mistakenly assumed that most understood this.
I still feel that the series is far more powerful than fiction, although yes, it may be enhanced.

I’ve often thought about the connection of Deadliest catch and the bible while watching the show, I know that I personally would never want to go out on the bering sea without Jesus, nor would I want any man in my life to do so.
Some fans couldn’t give a monkeys about it but, yes, I think Deadliest Catch as a bible study is a grand idea!
    More power to the idea!!!

Muriel Clark… really? “I consider myself a Christian, but not necessarily religious, and am generally offended by the hypocracy I observe in churchy Christians.”

I don’t buy this at all. If the hypocrats are standing between you and God then they are closer to Him than you.

The concept is true. Jesus hung out with Fishermen, Tax Collectors, and Prostitutes because they were the most receptive to his word.

Also, any one who regards “Churchy Christians” as being hypocrites, needs to look in the mirror and explain to yourself how your not a hypocrite when you don’t go worship God, which is what you’re suppose to do at a church. Not judge others.

Let us take time to give thanks and praise for the life of Capt. Phil Harris and his personality that we fans got to know through the series. I deeply regret that I never got to meet him in person. Captain Phil was never forced to quit or retire. He now enjoys the company of some other great fishermen like Simon-Peter, Andrew, James and John.

Well, if the Lord isn’t watching over all of my Mavar and Anderson fishermen…I couldn’t tell you WHO IS!!! To see how my family’s faith in our Heavenly Father’s gentle, loving hand on every one of us, has to mean something to someone out there when Jake can grow strong and succeed through tragedy and trial. Our prayer is that through his notoriety, his kind heart, commitment to family and faith in God’s promises is a witness to many. Keith, his father, has to be smiling his tender smile over his now amazing son. My brother prayed and waited for a son for so many years….and Jake ‘gets it’ now, what his father wanted for him for so long…We are thankful for Jake’s fishing family who has been another family of great support and encouragement (as hard as it was for so long to see him struggle…) God is good, and although we miss Keith terribly, our faith is strong, we know our Savior has him in Heaven, and we continue to thank God for many blessings in each day.
