Deadliest Catch camera man reports for duty

What is more dangerous than fishing for crab in the Bering Sea?  Filming the guys fishing in the Bering Sea!  The “Deadliest Catch” camera men are just as crazy as the fishermen.  Once the weather turns bad, they want to be there to get the shot.

Ben Zupo Shooting

Last year, the Cornelia Marie had a “green horn” camera man by the name of Ben Zupo.  This year he returns more experienced and ready to go.  Unfortunately, this year he’s working for the F/V Northwestern:)  I’m sure he’ll miss the good-natured humor of Captain Phil.  Now, he’ll have to put up with the Hansen brothers.  Also, he’ll realize how nice the F/V Cornelia Marie rides compared to the F/V Northwestern.  This is because our house (living quarters) is in the stern instead of forward like the Northwestern.

Most of the “Deadliest Catch” crew are now showing up in Dutch Harbor to prepare for the Opilio season starting on January 15th.  Unfotunately, we have some boat issues to take care before we can fish.  More later.

Happy New Year from F/V Cornelia Marie

It’s a new year and the Opilio season starts on January 15th.

The “Deadliest Catch” crew’s gear waits for them to arrive and outfit the boats for the rest of the long, hard Bering Sea winter.

King Crab Season finished for Cornelia Marie

This is a follow up to the last post a few days ago.  The F/V Cornelia Marie came into to deliver their final load for the Red King Crab season today.  The guys can now take a couple weeks off for Christmas, but will be back to Dutch right after New Years to get ready for the Opilio crab season.

F/V Cornelia Marie still fishing

Christmas is coming, but the boys are still fishing.  We’re one of a handful of boats still fishing for Red King Crab in the Bering Sea.  It’s been a rough season… repairs, bad weather and poor fishing has led to a long, hard season for the Cornelia Marie.  Our buyer says they won’t buy any Crab after December 17th – so the clock is ticking.  Hopefully, this week we’ll finish up our quota and the guys can go home for Christmas.

But, the break won’t be long because the Opilio season starts January 15th.

Cornelia Marie is on Facebook

Facebook CMAre you a member of Facebook?  If not, it’s easy to sign up at http://www.facebook.com.

We have a fan site on Facebook called “Deadliest Catch – F/V Cornelia Marie”.  It’s really easy to find – just search for “Cornelia Marie”.  Join the group and you can check out the many videos, and pics we have posted there.  Somehow, the F/V Northwestern’s Facebook Fan site has twice as many members than ours!  We can’t let that happen  – so please join now. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.  The F/V Cornelia Marie is in Dutch Harbor.  We had to stop in for repairs  We can’t head back out just yet because the weather here is bad.

Our mechanical problems have caused us to unfortunately extend our King Crab season.  It’s been a longer than normal King Crab season for us, but hopefully it will be over with one more trip.

Tomorrow is an all day “Deadliest Catch” marathon on Discovery Channel.  See you there.

Capt. Phil to appear on “Profiles”

In you live in the Seattle area, be sure to watch “Profiles” on Saturday, October 11th on Channel 7 KIRO TV at 10 pm.  If you don’t live in Seattle, then check back with kirotv.com for the video.

Even in this era of reality television, with its unabashed look at the lives of its true-to-life characters and their triumphs and conflicts, no one could have predicted the immense popularity of a show that centers around the life of a group of crab fishermen. Certainly not Seattle’s Phil Harris, captain of the crab boat Cornelia Maria and one of the stars of Discovery Channel’s top-rated series, Deadliest Catch. Harris tells KIRO 7 Eyewitness News anchor Steve Raible, “I’m a crab fisherman, not a celebrity. This show was supposed to be for the middle of the night and it just took off.”

F/V Cornelia Marie in Dutch Harbor

The F/V Cornelia Marie has arrived in Dutch Harbor and now begins preparation for the October 15th King Crab opening.  The boat is in great shape after receiving weeks of maintenance and repair in Ketchikan’s dry dock.  The weather was excellent as the Cornelia Marie sailed from Ketchikan to its home port of Kodiak, then onto Dutch Harbor.

The next couple weeks will be busy as the crew loads on crab pots and the Discovery Channel’s video crew once again prepares for another Bering Sea winter.

F/V Cornelia Marie to leave Drydock soon

For several weeks, the F/V Cornelia Marie has been at drydock in Ketchikan, Alaska.  Many fans of the show have taken pictures as they passed by on a cruiseship going in and out of the harbor.  As you can see by the photos, we have a new coat of paint.  But more importantly, we’ve been working on one of our main engines that needed attention.  Also, we’ve tried to make some efficiency improvements to save money by burning less fuel.
