Crab fisherman lost at sea
Sad News to report out of Dutch Harbor. The Coast Guard has officially suspended their search for Keith Criner, a 43 year old deckhand on the F/V Seabrooke. According to news reports, Criner became tangled in crab pot line and fell into the ocean approximately 22 miles northwest of Cold Bay at 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday morning.Getting tangled in the line and getting pulled over board with the crab pot is one of the greatest concerns of every fishermen. This particular danger has taken many lives.
This type of loss is unimaginable. Our prayers go out to his family and to the crew of the F/V Seabrooke.
The Seabrooke is a Kodiak-based, 98-foot vessel owned by Angel Pacific Fisheries of Milton-Freewater, Ore., She was fishing for Tanner crab in the Bering Sea at the time of the incident.
The Seabrook is now tied up in Dutch Harbor.

Deadliest Catch camera man reports for duty
What is more dangerous than fishing for crab in the Bering Sea? Filming the guys fishing in the Bering Sea! The “Deadliest Catch” camera men are just as crazy as the fishermen. Once the weather turns bad, they want to be there to get the shot.
Last year, the Cornelia Marie had a “green horn” camera man by the name of Ben Zupo. This year he returns more experienced and ready to go. Unfortunately, this year he’s working for the F/V Northwestern:) I’m sure he’ll miss the good-natured humor of Captain Phil. Now, he’ll have to put up with the Hansen brothers. Also, he’ll realize how nice the F/V Cornelia Marie rides compared to the F/V Northwestern. This is because our house (living quarters) is in the stern instead of forward like the Northwestern.
Most of the “Deadliest Catch” crew are now showing up in Dutch Harbor to prepare for the Opilio season starting on January 15th. Unfotunately, we have some boat issues to take care before we can fish. More later.

Article explains how Captain Phil nearly died this season
“In a scene to be shown later this season, a monster wave pummeled his boat in January, causing him to fall out of his bunk. He punctured a lung and broke his ribs. But his condition worsened after a blood clot dislodged from his leg and traveled to his heart.”
Read the full article here. I think the premiere episode debuts in the United Kingdom and Canada today. Do you folks already know what is going to happen (from the internet) or do you wait to watch the episodes as they come out?

A Hero’s Journey
I came across a well written blog about the Deadliest catch I would like to share with you. The author of the blog only goes by the initial “b”, but is obviously a good writer. You can view her blog about the Deadliest Catch here. http://accordingtobreal.blogspot.com/
One of the most interesting aspects of the show to me is the fact that the show appeals to such a wide group of people. According to our web stats, we have been visited by more than 48 countries and every state in the union. I hear from every person you can imagine; from U.S. soldiers fighting in IRAQ to young girls wanting to know more about Jake and Josh. However, there does seem to be something everyone has in common. Respectfully, honest, hardworking – good people.

Video Interview of Captain Phil, “I damn near died on the boat”
It appears the word is out… Captain Phil faced a fatal situation this season, but we don’t know when or what episode it will show up on. In fact, he’s still not fully recovered as of today. But, let Captain Phil tell you in his own words what really happened… after the jump is a video from a WGN TV9 interview he did in Chicago with Keith Colburn.
Here is the summary by Discovery Channel of Tuesday new episode:
Deadliest Catch
A Numbers Game
TV-14 (L)A mechanical breakdown presses Northwestern’s Edgar to make a dangerous repair. Meanwhile questionable counting makes Sig lose his temper. Hard work separates the greenhorns on Wizard. On Cornelia Marie, Phil’s health is failing and impacts the crew.

Fishing boat sinks near Dutch Harbor, Four lives lost
We found out over the weekend that the 184 foot, F/V Alaska Ranger sunk about 120 miles west of Dutch Harbor early Sunday morning. Our prayers go out to the families. One of the four people who lost their lives was the Captain, Eric Peter Jacobsen, 65, of Lynnwood, Wash
KIRO TV in Seattle interviewed the Captains adult children. News story here.
They said there must have been something terribly wrong for a boat of that size to sink and they would like to know the details. Yes, I agree. The weather was not rough and something strange must have happened for them to take on water so fast. Usually, when a boat takes on water – there is enough time to be rescued before having to abandon ship.
The F/V Alaska Ranger was a factory trawler and not one of the fishing boat in the F/V Cornelia Marie crab fishing fleet. This was a large vessel with 47 people on board. It drags a large net (trawl) from the stern of the vessel to catch its fish. Once caught, the fish are processed and frozen right there aboard the ship. These guys stay out at sea for along time and it’s not an easy job.
More details can be found here.
