125 mph Winds hit Dutch Harbor; F/V Cornelia Marie okay
According to our friend in Dutch Harbor and the Anchorage Daily News; “Winds as high as 125 mph toppled a 110-foot gantry crane at a shipping facility in Dutch Harbor.” Nobody was hurt, thank goodness. I guess there was rumors about the F/V Cornelia Marie sustaining damage, but as you can see in this photo – she is resting fine tied up along a few other crabbers in port. The guys are home with their families for Christmas. They will return to Dutch Harbor and get ready for Opilios in January.
According to ADN report: “Unalaska city roads chief Jim Dickson described the storm in an e-mail Saturday. “A few roofs were blown away, a mud slide across a road; but generally most of town made it through with only minor damage,” he wrote.”

Cornelia Marie to finish up King Crab season tomorrow
FISHING UPDATE: We only had a small amount of our quota to catch and deliver, but the bad weather made everything take longer. We are scheduled to deliver tomorrow into Dutch Harbor, but it may be slow going getting into town with strong winds blowing against us. Good news is that once this last delivery is made, our King Crab season will be finished and the guys can go home to their families for Thanksgiving. This wasn’t the case last year. Maybe we’ll get some photos of the unload from our friends in Dutch. Have a good weekend.

Pastor dreams of converting Dutch Harbor bar into shelter for “Deadliest Catch” inspired greenhorns
This video is about a Dutch Harbor Pastor’s dream of converting a closed bar into a shelter for guys trying to get a fishing job. The bar happens to be the notorious “Elbow Room”, a well-know bar that carried a “wild west” reputation in Dutch Harbor. I remember at 14 years of age going to the Elbow Room with the rest of the guys. At that age, I had still heard many stories about this infamous place. I sneaked a few drinks of beer and really felt like I was living on the edge. I returned back to the boat early in the evening with the old man, who never really drank more than a beer. The rest of the crew stayed out and we didn’t seem them again until morning. The next morning I really quizzed the guys for details of the evening, but barely got any words out of them since they were so hungover. They said things got crazy, there were fights and somebody got stabbed.
I also remember guys walking the docks looking for jobs. I don’t remember the old man every hiring a guy from the dock – you’re just taking a huge chance. The news story talks about these guys who come out for the work, but find themselves stranded and with no money.

Cornelia Marie near collision with Deadliest Catch Chase Boat
It has been reported on other websites and forums that the F/V Cornelia Marie was hit by the Deadliest Catch chase boat. As it turns out, our boat was never actually hit, but experienced a near collision that had everyone concerned. The picture to the left and the video below show a near collison that occurred between the F/V Lisa Marie and the Deadliest Catch chase boat, the F/V Sea Star. This event happened at the beginning of the King Crab season last year.
Since the boats are both moving so dramatically, the most stable shot for the camera person is one that is hand held. When shooting hand held, it’s best to shoot on a wide angle lens to lessen the shakiness of the shot. This is why the chase boats get so close to the fishing boats; because they can’t really zoom in.
Meanwhile, the F/V Cornelia Marie continues fishing for King Crab. Our season is short due to lower quotas, but is going well. We have made one delivery to St. Paul and will be finished soon.

Deadliest Catch Fleet starts King Crab Season
On October 15, the Alaska King Crab fleet started the 2009 King Crab Season. Among these boats include those on the “Deadliest Catch”. Our boat, the F/V Cornelia Marie is on the ground fishing now. Unlike last year at this time, things are going well for our boat and crew (knock on wood). Last year we had many mechanical problems that delayed our King Crab start.
If fishing is good, we’ll have a couple trips out to sea before we reach our quota. Of course, there are always things to keep it interesting. This season we have an “Observer” on board.
Thanks to our friends at Dutch Harbor Dirt Blog for the pics.

Dangerous Jobs include Commercial Divers
My friend Adam who runs the cdiver.net website – a online community for the world’s commercial divers – was telling me the dangerous working conditions of commercial divers. Of course, in the most recent season of “Deadliest Catch” we saw this first hand when Captain Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard took a shot to the head when trying to inspect his ship’s haul. In this video above, the diver quickly looses part of his thumb on a dive job. Yikes! His boss on the radio calmy tells him not too worry about the blood because there aren’t any large fish around. Lots of ways to get hurt! Thanks to all the commercial divers around the world working on oil rigs, ships, underwater pipes, etc. – stay safe!

“The sinking of the F/V Seahawk”, told by Corey Eisenbarth.
As promised in a recent blog on www.corneliamarie.com, we are bringing you video clips from an exclusive interview with former Cornelia Marie deckhand, Corey Eisenbarth.
You may have heard the gut-wrenching story about the sinking of the Seahawk in 1983 during Corey’s appearance on “After The Catch.” During the interview with us, Corey gave a detailed account of his terrifying ordeal at the age of 18.
“We overloaded the boat with too many crab pots. That was the first mistake we made… The steering ram must have broke inside the rudder room… I went out on deck…and by this time the whole boat was already on its side.” Hear the story from Corey himself in this videotaped interview recorded in June at his home in Astoria, Oregon.
In the next installment, we’ll hear from both Freddy and Corey of the Cornelia Marie. They knew each other for years before working side by side on deck. You will hear more about why they love fishing on the Bering Sea, scary stories from the deck of the Cornelia Marie and more in the next video clip and blog…coming soon.

Former CM deckhand, Corey Eisenbarth on “After the Catch”.
I’m sure you all remember Corey Eisenbarth from his time on the Cornelia Marie and his recent appearance on “After The Catch,” which airs Tuesday evenings after “Deadliest Catch.”

The biggest thing that sticks out in your mind when you think of Corey might be his harrowing story of being shipwrecked in 1983 on the unfortunate F/V Seahawk. A few weeks ago, I interviewed Corey at his home town of Astoria, Oregon. I got an inside look into the terrifying scenario that is every fisherman’s worst nightmare.
“The boat rolled over and was upside down within twenty minutes but it took about four hours to fully sink…We spent the whole night in the water and we could see the rescue choppers flying about us. They didn’t think that we were in the debris…”
Listen to Corey tell the whole story of how he helped save the lives of a few of his fellow crewmen by creating a makeshift raft out of debris and in the exclusive videotaped interview with Corey Eisenbarth.
Stay tuned to Corneliamarie.com to for the first installment of our exlusive interview with Corey Eisenbarth. We will also bring you information about Freddy Maugatai, fellow Cornelia Marie deckhand and good friend of Corey.

F/V Lady Mary sinks off New Jersey
Devastating news in the world of fishing. According to the New York Times, two men are dead and four missing after the Lady Mary sank 65 miles southeast of Cape May, N.J. Tuesday morning. The Coast Guard said of the three crewmen rescued from the chilly Atlantic waters, only one survived. The search continues for the remaining four members of the scallop boat.
Our thoughts and prayers from the F/V Cornelia Marie go out to the friends and families of the Lady Mary.
