Capt. Phil of the Cornelia Marie is back on the Deadliest Catch!

You can’t keep a good man down! Capt. Phil is back in his favorite chair as the skipper for the F/V Cornelia Marie. At the start of the King Crab season, Phil’s doctor said he wasn’t ready yet to go back out to sea. Phil was forced to sit out and let relief skipper Murray Gamrath take the helm for the season.
In early January, at the start of the Opilio season – Capt. Phil re-joins the crew!

PHIL what will it take to get you to stop smoking? We love you but I can’t believe after all you’ve been through you are still smoking. Are you trying to kill yourself? think of your family. STOP.

Just curious, but wouldnt Phil feel better and be healthier if he quit smoking? Also how much does he actually smoke? 5 packs a day is my guess, 100 cigarettes a day.

Murray Gamrath is actually working on the Cornelia Marie now as Skipper. From now on, he will no longer be a deckhand and just skipper the Cornelia Marie when Phil is off.

Ah. I was wondering what happened. Didn’t see Murray on the current series being aired (2009 oppies). I was concerned since he came off a red crab season where they had a significant loss due to dead crab.

So glad to see you back on your ship. Last year when the season ended and it left us hanging about your health my 9 year old daughter Cheyenne was in tears wanting to be sure you where fine. Thankfully I was able to follow you a bit through the internet and told her you where still ok. She was thrilled to see you the other night when you came on board. Be safe and have a great season. God bless the Cornelia Marie and its crew.

My name is Katherine and I wanted to write to the show to say THANK YOU!! I am alive and well today because my husband, Marty, and I watch Deadliest Catch! Recently, September 4th, 2009 I had surgery. 4 days later I started having pain in my chest/ shoulder area. I thought that I had a pinched nerve because I had been in bed propped up for 4 days. Slowly over the next few days the pain consistently increased. We were having dinner with my Dad, who was in town for a charity golf tournament with my husband. After dinner, on the way home, the pain escallated to intense. So much so, that even a small variation in the road caused searing pain. Marty took me straight to the Emergency Room where he sat me in a chair and went to check me in. Once he reached the window I heard him ask a peculiar question, “Have you ever watched ‘The Deadliest Catch’”? I heard the receptionist reply, “yes”. Marty then says, “do you recall in season 4 when Capt Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie coughs up blood, has pain in his chest, and difficulty breathing?” The receptionist replies “yes”. Marty turns and points me out saying “that is my wife and that is whats happening to her”! Well, needless to say, I was surprised and so was the hospital staff! Within minutes I was whisked to a bed, IV in my arm, oxygen in my nose, EKG running, blood drawn, and oxygen senor on my finger! My pulse & heart rate were all over the place and the pain worse then child birth! Well long story short, it was confirmed that I had a pulmonary embollism (blood clot from my calf broke loose and lodged in my lung)! I was told that had my husband not recognized the symtoms that Capt Phil Harris had and remembered his diagnois I would have died!!! Another few hours and I would not be sending this e-mail today! I am alive today because of ‘The Deadliest Catch’ Season 4, Episode 12, titled ‘Mortal Men’! Thank you is just not enough to express our gratitude! We are definately “Deadliest Catch” fans for life!
Thank you so much from Marty, Kyra (age 9), Brandon (age 13), our entire families, and myself!
