Phil, you single-handedly delivered the best bit on that show ever!
I’m still laughing about it, and when I first heard you put forthe the crab fart theory, I spewed Iced Green Tea all over the place!
Thanks Phil!

So after hearing that crabs fart, my friends said what do you want them to explode by holding it in? Then I realized that “ocean” smell I love so much is really crab farts. So lovely. My stomach still hurts from watching Phil smell the air. Classic stuff.
Thank you.

Hmmm…fart bubbles…now we know your secret. :) Hollywood has nothing on this level of entertainment. Glad to see you back…get healthy sir. Your audience needs more drama in this area unless it is positive news.

My theory is that as the crab walk on the sea floor, all the little crab feet are stirring up the silt and decomposing matter on the sea floor and causing the methane bubbles to be released, much like it does in a swamp.
My wife believes Captain Phil though.

I don’t think it’s a joke! In the wild, these critters exist as an amazing biological mass. Like a giant rolling ball that moves as a mass across the ocean floor.
Most animals generate gasses in the process of digesting their food and unless they are going to swell up and burst, they are going to release it out the backend just as we do and cows do and even birds do.
Remember, you’ve got thousands, more like hundreds of thousands of the critters in a concentrated bolus down there. Those bubble are going to rise to the surface, and, I suspect have an odor peculiar to themselves. Capt. Phil is on to something here.

Captain Phil, I am watching the “Deadliest Catch” marathon today (27 Nov 09) on Discovery, and just saw again you explaining your famous Crab Fart Theory. I started laughing so hard that I spit my soda over the keyboard and monitor. That was absolutely PRICELESS! I am sure that your two sons and the rest of the crew gave you a lot of grief about that!
On a more serious note, I am continuing to keep you and your health in my thoughts and prayers. My best friend died last year from a sudden blood clot / pulmonary embolism.

Capt. Phil was the most unique individual I think I have ever watched on tv. His humour, stong perserverance, drive, and leadership are an inspiration to many in his field and in the world. I know I will truly miss watching him and I am very sorry I never had the chance to meet him. Jake and Josh, don’t ever forget that your dad truly loved you both. He made that very clear to the world ever time he was on camera. You both were and still are, his true pride and joy. If you ever make it to clearwater florida I would be honored to be able to meet you both. Just email me and let me know you are coming and I will make sure to take you both out for the best steak you could ever have. Be well and my best wishes to you both and the crew of the Cornelia Marie.
