Article explains how Captain Phil nearly died this season

“In a scene to be shown later this season, a monster wave pummeled his boat in January, causing him to fall out of his bunk. He punctured a lung and broke his ribs. But his condition worsened after a blood clot dislodged from his leg and traveled to his heart.”

Read the full article here. I think the premiere episode debuts in the United Kingdom and Canada today. Do you folks already know what is going to happen (from the internet) or do you wait to watch the episodes as they come out?

Being a worrier, I finally gave in to the anxiety and decided to read the full story before the last episode aired. Hey, Phil’s MySpace page is great, but don’t forget about us Facebook people! BTW, thanks, Bonnie R., sounds like you do a lot to help Phil. Speaking of Phil, Oklahoma City would welcome a visit, but it’s damn hot here this time of year!

Dear Phil: I have so much respect for you as a dad and a hard working person…From what I see is that you are a single dad,and you and your kids have a good relationship…I am a mom with five children…But one of my sons has passed away, and he is the one that got me started watching the show..I pray that your health will be put into check and that you have good care…Having this terrible time on your ship made me feel bad for you and your crew as well as your children…Now I see that you are on the mend…God bless you,Darlin..Peace be with you and good luck on your next trip to the Bering Sea…Your faithful fan,Pat Moss

    Phil -

By now, I’m guessing that the very worst of your experience has passed and that you’re well along in your recovery. I suffered nearly the same series of events (at a much smaller scale) at nearly the same time. In late February, I noticed swelling, accompanied by pain, in one leg. Went to emergency, where I was diagnosed with a clot, given anticoagulants, and sent home. A few days later, I was just sitting on the sofa when I got dizzy, lightheaded, and had chest pain. I was sure it was a heart attack. Went back to emergency and found that clots had found their way into both lungs. The difference was that I’m not a smoker (anymore) and that I didn’t have broken ribs or punctured lungs. Actually, I felt fine once I realized it wasn’t a heart attack. Five months later, I’m still on anticoagulants and am going for blood tests every week or two.

As a former 3-pack-a-day smoker, though, I’ve gotta say – this is your big chance to quit, and it may well be the voice of the sending a not-so-subtle message that it’s time to make a change.

One last thing – your talk about mortality (while you were still on board the Cornelia Marie) was really moving. I think that’s the gift that these events provides – they serve as reminders that we need to keep our priorities in perspective.

And one other last thing – I really admire Josh’s devotion to you. He was terrific even before your health faltered, but when the going got tough, he really stepped up, and we all love him for that. He, Jake, Murray, and the whole crew are fabulous guys, and we are really enjoying getting to know you through Deadliest Catch.

    Hey Phil,

Glad your OK. I’m sure it was scary being out to sea and spitting up blood. Blood clots are a bitch! I got injured out work and have constant pain from permanament nerve damage. As a result I can’t work, nor do anything else. So I know the feeling being told you may not be able to return to work. In my case, it became a reality. I hope in your case you have a complete recovery! I love Deadliest Catch. I watch it almost every day (repeats!). And even though I’m watching from the couch, from which I can barely get up from, I find myself fantasizing I’m on the deck of the Cornelia Marie crab fishing. I really think I could have been a greenhorn for ten, maybe fifteen, minutes before you would have thrown my ass off your boat.

Please take care of yourself. At least cut back on the cigarettes. You don’t want to end up like me. It’s no fun, and not much of a life, viewing the world from the couch. I know you wouldn’t like it.

Thanks for giving me, and all your fans, a little excitement by letting us tag along (safely from home) on the Cornelia Marie.

    Dear Capt. Phil,
After watching DC from the start its hard not to become emotionally attached to you, your boys and the crew of the F/V CM. You all have stolen a little bit of my heart. Recovering from an illness can sometimes be harder than having the actual illness and it always takes longer than you think to recover. Hang in there and I will continue to keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayers. After all, you do have a reputation to uphold. As I recall it was Jake who stated “you’re a hottie with a naughty body “. That quote makes me laugh every time I hear it and I am looking forward to more quotes and pearls of wisdom to come. Take care and consider yourself hugged and kissed.

    Captain Phil,
You have always been my favorite captain and my heart was breaking to see you near death. I am very happy to know that you are recovering and I just have one request. Please stop smoking. I know you have heard this many times before, but I can tell you from experience that it is killing you. There are new pills out there that are very affective. Phil I watched both of my parents die because of smoking. It really destroys your body.
I sincerely hope that you do well and I will keep you in my prayers.

Phil, I know first hand what you and the rest of the boats do in the Bearing Sea. While in the Coast Guard in the early 80′s, I was stationed abord the USCGC Jarvis, WHEC 725. You and I have sailed the same seas, visited the same ports and fought the same storms. My hat goes off to you and your crew for what you do. If I was there, I would buy you and your crew a beer, lemonade for you because of your health.LOL
Best of luck to you, stay dry and for God’s sake stay safe.

Please have your doctor check you out for anti-thrombin 3 deficiency – it could save your life. Conventional blood thinners don’t always work on a clot if you have this inherited blood disorder (a possibility of you have a family history of blood clots and are of Norwegian descent.) If you get a clot that isn’t resolved by using heparin, you may need a transfusion of antithrombin 3 concentrate. Also, if you have this there is a 50/50 change that your sons have it too. A simple blood test to check your anti-thrombin level can tell you if you’re at increased risk for more blood clots. Hope you are doing better!

Seeing that episode and the others afterward, I was very scared that you’d croak before you got into the harbor. You should have gone right in! My mom and I love the show and we love your boat as well, so we were very worried about you (and still are). Please don’t drink no more Red Bulls (I lost my taste for them and I like Monsters, better) and make sure you move around a bit when you do go back on the boat. Also, do make sure you get something to eat while you’re on board as well.

After watching the past few episodes, everyone in my family is rooting for you. You are in our prayers. I know a bit about being stubborn, and in the end you’re left with Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda…..Please take care of yourself. The Cornelia Marie is our favorite fishing vessel with one hell of a crew as well as ONE HELL OF A CAPTAIN. Phil, if you promise to do everything the doctors tell you and get over this, I will send you a drawing of my favorite captain et al., done by yours truly.

    Take care

Deadliest Catch is the only show my husband and I agree on watching, we both love it. I was terribly saddened when I watched After the Catch this week and go the update on Phil’s health. I really hope that this passes and he can go about his business. Phil you are in our thoughts, and very much missed on the show. By the way, you should consider selling your birdfeeders, I would probably buy one. :)

    Phil,

I watched the “After the Catch” at least 3 times since it aired to be sure of everything I heard!!! I am very worried about you and how well you are doing. Please do exactly what the doctors tell you to do the world is a much better place with you in it. I got pretty choked up the first time I watched the chat. It was even more apparent as to the love you have for your boys and the pride you have for the work your boys do. Being a mother myself and having has a similar scare myself (embolism vs, aneurysm) but I cannot imagine what it felt like to walk back to the boat and talk to your boys like it was the last time!! You and the boys are in my thoughts everyday and hoping I will see you back for the next season!

BTW-Murray has been fun to watch run the boat but you are the Captain forever in my eyes. Please promise to be careful, Phil! This was a hard season to watch for many reasons and you are the biggest for me. It was good to have a new perspective on the show in that not everyday is GREAT fishing as you all have said many times.

If you ever sell your bird feeders I would definitely by one. Just let em know how to go about getting my hands on them (gifts baby!!!)

Being in Canada I am not sure what is airing in the US right now or if the season is already over but it was at the end of Tuesdays episode that it showed
Phil in distress. My poor ten year old broke into tears, so here I am souring the interent to find out what happened. Thank God you are okay, and my daughter is even happier than I! She has watched every episode from every season and she affectionately she calls you “her Phil” and I was very happy to tell her that “her Phil” will be okay and that she can watch the rest of the season.

Dear Phil,I am glad to hear you are doing better.  Being out at sea with a blood clot had to be a very scary experience.  I missed you on the boat the last couple of episodes, but it is very apparent just how much you care for your sons and crew members.  I love the sea and all of her different moods but at the same time I respect her also.  I live in southern Alabama where Hurricane Katrina came through, and I can’t imagine a Hurricane with snow and ice.  I have worked with patients on the medication you were talking about on the show and I understand just how serious it is, but I hope the your health will continue to get better and maybe one day return to the Cornelia Marie. I am hooked on DC it does not matter if it is a rerun I will still watch it. I know alot of women have told you that you rock, so keep on smiling at the camera. And I bet ten years ago you never thought you would never have a film crew on your boat.  My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your sons. Take care of yourself.
    Always,
    Suzanne
