Filling in for Capt. Phil – the toughest job

Josh Harris calling Captains

The still shot above is from a video showing Josh on the phone looking for a captain to take his dad’s place.  This scene was not aired on “Deadliest Catch”.  This video clip comes from the an internet only series of videos called “Chasing the Catch”.  These videos were all taken from and include the chase boat, the “FV Aquila”.  This boat is owned by some great folks who have been good friends to the FV Cornelia Marie, thank you Kale and Anji.

As viewers of the show, it was really hard to watch a relief skipper come aboard the FV Cornelia Marie at the end of the last episode.  That new skipper is Derrick Ray and he’s an old family friend of my mother, Cornelia and Capt. Phil.  When Derrick landed in St. Paul to captain the FV Cornelia Marie, we thought Phil was going to make a long but full recovery.  So, it was up to Derrick to step in and finish the Opilio season.  This was a tough situation – to step on board during that time.  Derrick said the crew was very upset and that they “were a train wreck”.

I couldn’t think of a better person to step in during that time than Derrick Ray.  He’s a well known Bering Sea Captain with a big heart to match his talent as a great skipper.

Derrick started making money on the sea at a very young age.   He was a deckhand on charter boats that plyed the waters off the Oregon Coast.   Once high school was over he headed north to Alaska.  Here, he worked on several boats before landing a job as a deckhand on the F/V Milky Way.  The 76 foot Milky Way was then owned by my folks Ralph and Cornelia Collins.  Derrick and I were both deckhands at the same time.

Derrick quickly established himself as a great fisherman.  At the young age of 23, he skippered his first King Crab opening in the Bering Sea.  An enormous undertaking for a young man, but one that Derrick handled well.

A lot happened on board the FV Cornelia Marie after Phil left.  Most of it will not make it to television because of the limited time.  I will write more to try and fill in the gaps.  We appreciate everyone’s continued support of the Cornelia Marie family.

I have watch the catch since day one and capt. Phil was a favorite. If it was to said he did so colorfully. His shoes are not fillable although I welcome anyone to try. His big heart and outspoken ways were one of a kind. Good Luck and safe sailing to all the fisherman out there. Phil will be missed by millions and his family has the nations hearts all the way. Blessed be

We all thought Capt. Phil would make it. I am sure his spirit still lives on the boat.
Not trying to sound gory or anything, just basing that on a personal family experience.
My Dad passed on suddenly a few years back and our family business was his favorite place in the world.
Ever since then, the lights in his office turn themselves on about once or twice a week. It is like he is letting us know he is still there watching over us.

I really hope that the Cornelia Marie will still be on the series. I loved Captain Phil, he was my favorite captain. The whole crew was a family and I would hate to see that family taken away from us. I would like to see Josh and Jake stay with the ship also. It would be like having a part of Phil with us. I would like to see how Derrick handles the whole situation and how he will pull the crew together. He has some big shoes to fill and it will be an interesting transformation. When I started watching Deadliest Catch it was just a show but after the first year I got to thinking of them as families and a part of my life. Deadliest Catch is the only show that I watch on TV. Nothing is ever planned on the night it is on. So please continue next season with the Cornelia Marie.

Thanks so much for filling us in. I will miss Phil terribly. He was a genuine person who wore his heart on his sleeve. I hope the boys serve his memory well, on or off the boat.

This past Tuesday’s show…I laughed and cried at the same time when Jake and Josh were arguing over that spoonful of ice and Phil was looking back and forth at them and then very nonchalantly grabbed the spoon and ate the ice. It was so much of a
Phil moment…this is hard because those of us as just fans loved him too!

  6. Jennifer July 9, 2010 at 9:28 pm #

Like many others I as well have watched the show since the start. Capt. Phil was and will continue to be my favorite. I feel for the boys I can only imagine how they feel. They will always be in prayer. God Bless the family.

  7. Laura July 9, 2010 at 9:32 pm #

So heart breaking. The mother in me will always worry about Captain Phil’s boys. No matter what happens on the show I need to continue to hear of their progress. I also would like to recognize Jonathan Hilstrand in his friendship to the Harris’. I guess the recognition should go to all the Alaska fishing community.

  8. Ken Warren July 9, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

Morgan thank you for keeping us up to date on the Harris brothers and the rest of the crew. Capt.Phil will always be my wifes and my favorite on the show. Tell Josh and Jake Harris we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

  9. Cindy July 9, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

I do not watch much teevision but this show stole my heart from day one. I get so involved that I think I actually feel everythig that the guys feel, I have been crying with them. I really got attached to everyone. The boys nd Phil were my favorite. I love the love they have. I lost my dad in 1997, he was 54. Way to young. The show will never be the same. God Bless and Love you all.

  10. Mary Ann July 9, 2010 at 9:43 pm #

I am so sorry about Phil, but was glad to see Derrick step in. I sincerely hope the Cornelia Marie continues to ply the waters of the Bering Sea.

  11. Grummpy July 9, 2010 at 9:50 pm #

Thank you for your time keeping us updated & filled in. I have watched the show from day 1 as many others across this nation. I admire every man on each vessel & the families that stand on the shore & wait for their safe returns. Edgar is a fine example of the toil experienced on both land & sea by these families. Capt Phil will forever be remembered as one of the greatest fishermen of the Bering Sea. I am very interested in the tattoo on his left arm. If you could somehow get a nice close up of the tat for all of us to see. To the 2 young men he has left behind, your father is just a wave away…

  12. Veronica July 9, 2010 at 9:51 pm #

Thank you Morgan for taking the time out to update us all on how the Cornelia Marie family is doing. And especially for providing us with extra info, such as the Chasing the Catch link. I hope you know that the fans really appreciate all your hard work! Please pass on my love and best wishes to Josh, Jake, Cornelia, and the rest of the Cornelia Marie family ♥

My family as well have heavy hearts as we watched and heard the sad news. Strenghth to all who were close to all of the Conelia Marie and it’s crew. Phil is watching proudly over his sons and the captain who will be stepping up to the plate. God’s speed and blessings to all.

  14. Bobby July 9, 2010 at 9:57 pm #

We love you Phil. God speed brother. I am sure Capt. Ray knows he has some pretty big shoes to fill. God Bless him for being there and trying. Well wishes to the crew from Austin, Texas!

  15. LizKauai July 9, 2010 at 9:57 pm #

I was happy to see Capt. Derrick, however briefly, on the show. His demeanor was very calming and reassuring.
Warmest aloha to the whole Cornelia Marie Ohana (Family)!

  16. sheri July 9, 2010 at 9:57 pm #

even though will miss Capt Phil this guy looks like he can be a good Capt not as cute as Phil was.. LOL just kidding < cant wait to see cornelia marie back in action:)

  17. Barbara July 9, 2010 at 10:01 pm #

I have been watching Deadliest Catch since day one and have loved Phil and his family. He is deeply missed and I hope and pray that the Cornelia Marie will remain on the show and that Josh and Jake will continue to grow into the men their father would want them to be.

God bless the Harris family and all the boys of the Deadliest Catch.

  18. Kat July 9, 2010 at 10:08 pm #

I am still so sad about Captain Phil’s passing, it feels like a dream. He was so my favorite on the show, he was a hard ass but as soft as a teddy bear, I loved that man, he was so honest. I hope that his sons carry on his memory. RIP CAPTAIN PHIL!!!

  19. Dawn Masucci-Tucker July 9, 2010 at 10:08 pm #

I hope the boys will take on the legacy that Capt Phil has left behind. I lost my husband almost 4 years ago and miss him deeply, he was a great father, Navy Vet, fisherman, musician, and had a passion for life and put his music into what he wanted to be left behind and I will carry that on for him and this tribute is for him and as well as the Captain, this song “whales Tales, is about the sailors and the seas, how rough it really is out there. may they both sail on forever! A fan made a slide show for what he had invisioned his song to be…..but never had enough time to do…and my point for the boys is carry on the legacy for they live forever in our hearts. enjoy this tribute. God Bless

I have loved this damned show from the beginning and now it’s about to take a new turn, a sad loss, but a new adventure for all the fleet as well as the Captains…

  21. Raquel July 9, 2010 at 10:16 pm #

Thank you for sharing these moments with us. I am crying again. Its amazing how someone I never knew has affected me so much. My dad was so much like Phil, just he wasn’t a fisherman. Maybe thats why I’m so touched, being I lost my dad 8 yrs ago to cancer. I’m babbling and probably making no sense. Sorry. Thanks again Morgan, next week is going to be so hard to watch.

  22. David July 9, 2010 at 10:18 pm #

I had a real hard time holding back the tears during the last show, I am quit sure they will flow during Captain Phils’ last episode. RIP Captain Phil.

  23. Christy Fix July 9, 2010 at 10:20 pm #

Thanks for the update, Morgan. I’m so sorry for your loss. I know for you it was months ago, so I can only imagine having to relive it now. We all owe everyone involved our gratitude for the Harris family’s openness.

I hope the boys are holding up. I’ve been especially concerned about Jake. I know people who have pulled through. With enough support, he will, too.

    Best wishes to everyone there!

  24. Amanda July 9, 2010 at 10:22 pm #

I’m glad to see a captain has taken Phil’s place. I just hope that Captain Ray will allow the boys their chance at taking up the Captain’s position on the Conrelia Marie.

  25. Nikki Harmon July 9, 2010 at 10:24 pm #

Thank you for keeping us updated on Josh & Jake. Being a huge fan of the show and having watched every single episode, I would hate to be unknowing of the boys’ progress.

I miss Capt. Phil, I wish I would have known him, he seemed like a great person.

    God Bless.

Best Wishes from Kansas City, MO

  27. Kim Ingram July 9, 2010 at 10:37 pm #

When i saw on the internet that Captain Phil had passed away, myself along with my Husband felt as if we had lost part of our family. I remember calling my Husband who was in Texas at the time crying so hard i couldnt hardly talk. Phil along with the crew of the Cornelia Marie will always be a part of our heart and our Family. Although Phil will no longer be visible on the Cornelia, his spirit will always be there and lived out in josh and jake.

With much love and the best of wishes,
    Kim Ingram

  29. Tony July 9, 2010 at 10:40 pm #

The last episode of Capt. Phil will be very difficult for me. I lost my mom about 6 years ago to AVM. She went through the same brain surgery as Capt. Phil and survived. There were other circumstances that her from us. Just knowing what I went through with my loss I can only imagine how the boys are feeling and the crew are feeling. This is going to be a quiet night of remembrance for me and my family. I wish the boys and other captains the strength to make it through this troubling time.

  30. Eileen Atkinson July 9, 2010 at 10:42 pm #

It has been a rough season for sure and losing Capt Phil was the hardest moment yet. My husband and I watch Deadliest Catch religiously and have shed many a tear over what has happened. My prayers are continually with the crew of the Cornelia Marie and with the boys. Josh and Jake have a long road ahead of them, but if they are any thing like their father, they will laugh in the face of struggle. My heart breaks for them all – Capt Phil was (and will forever be) our favorite Captain. I am so not looking forward to the tear fest come Tuesday.

  31. cindy July 9, 2010 at 10:44 pm #

The show is really tough to watch without Capt. Phil, he will always be remembered and loved by all. Our thoughts and prayers are always with the boys. I hope they carry out their dads legacy.

  32. Briana July 9, 2010 at 10:48 pm #

I would love an update on what happened after the filming stopped- how the boys are doing and if the Cornelia will be back on Deadliest Catch next year.

Capt. Phil was loved by many and will be missed be all.

May the seas rise for you Captain–

    Thanks for the update Morgan!!!

  34. Cindy July 9, 2010 at 10:53 pm #

Thank you for your post. It is very comforting to know of his experience because he definitely has some huge shoes to fill. We all miss Capt. Phil so much and nobody will ever take ‘his place’, but his sons need somebody that truly cares about the Cornelia Marie to help them. God Bless You!

  35. Cathy Wagner July 9, 2010 at 11:53 pm #

I also miss Phil alot. He was like everyone’s big brother and best friend, all I can say is the big guy upstairs must really have needed a top notched crab fisherman to take the best before his time.

Phil would be so proud of Josh and Jake to see how much they are stepping up to the plate. He taught his sons well, also with the gentle guidance of Phil’s friends and family they will excel.

Our love to the Cornelia Marie family, we love you all dearly.

  36. DeNeen July 9, 2010 at 11:57 pm #

Thank you for allowing us to make Phil and his family our family. Now we are able to share the most treasured and sacred moments with them. I am sure that many are with this family with tears, anger, sadness, and unsurety but we all have to remember that Phil would want us all to live life as hard as he did, realize our responibilities, and hold on to the lessons and dreams that he taught. Josh and Jake, you are your daddy’s legancy, not the Cornelia Marie. Go run that boat but most of all your lives that will make him PROUD!!! Don’t screw it up by taking roads of life that he would tell you to ,”TURN AROUND AND RUN!! IT”S TROUBLE YOU DON’T NEED NOW!” I really love the show but love you guys thru the show. Will always be praying for you and looking for good things coming your way.

  37. mary ann July 10, 2010 at 12:01 am #

Morgan thank you for the update.

I have been a fan of DC for the past several years. All the crew, as some have said, almost feel like family. The past few shows have been hard to watch because we all know the ultimate outcome, which makes it more emotional. Next week’s two hour show will be, almost too much to bear, but I will be there in front of my TV watching and honoring the memory of Cap’t. Phil. He was a ‘big ol’ Teddy Bear’ of a guy who loved his family and friends. It won’t be the same without him. Do hope that Derrick stays with the Cornelia Marie. He seems like t he perfect person to take over. Hope that Jake and Josh are doing well and that the Cornelia Marie is back next season. It would be a fitting tribute to Phil’s memory.

  38. Barbara July 10, 2010 at 12:17 am #

I think Mike Rowe said it best there are millions of people rooting for the boys and all the viewers feel like they are part of the family because we get this peek into their lives. This is real life not some scripted reality show. God bless the Corneila Marie family, Josh and Jake and the entire Alaska fishing community.

  39. tom fletcher July 10, 2010 at 12:21 am #

Thank you for this site. As you have all realized thousands if not millions of people have followed your journey and now your loss. You have all of us behind you and support you in our thoughts and prayers. I am sure if there is anything even needed (fund raising for things needed) we all would be happy to touch your lives again.
    Continue the hard work.

  40. tina July 10, 2010 at 12:27 am #

i wish the best to the boys, i have loved the show since it started. it is so sad that phil has left us, i really hope the boys can keep it together and keep the legacy going with the ship!

  41. Arline Edmiston July 10, 2010 at 1:15 am #

I hope to still see the Cornelia Marie on the show. It has been my favorite boat since the very first season. I was so sure that Capt. Phil was going to pull through and make it. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

  42. chuck watts July 10, 2010 at 1:26 am #

my son was able to meet capt. phil a little over a year ago.he was so excited. phil and jake were in albany or. and they made a special effort to get macky up there so he could meet them, my son is diabetic and he needed his dinner and insulin in 30 minutes. he was about 200 people from the head of the line and he was led up to the front and placed between the two of them and sighned his picture for him. my heart goes out to the harris boys, i know how it feels to loose you dad. hang in there guys and make your dad proud. thank you very much your dad is gonna really be missed

  43. Elizabeth July 10, 2010 at 1:28 am #

Thanks for the update Morgan. Phil must be resting peacefully knowing his boat is in good hands. My heart is breaking all over again for the boys watching this. Josh and Jake, keep your heads up; you’re Dad is still with you and is proud of you both. Much love.

  44. Lori July 10, 2010 at 1:29 am #

I will miss capt Phil he has been my favorite since the beginning My heart breaks for his boys. I pray for them all the time. I hope that Jake gets the help he needs for his addiction I know all to well what that is like my son was in till his accident. Now after 3 and a half years later and 5 months in a coma he has his life back is now T.B.I but alive thank you Capt Derrick for stepping in

  45. Beth F Brownell July 10, 2010 at 1:36 am #

A friend passed this onto me and I feel I should pass it onto you and the rest of the crew of the Cornelia Marie.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispers “come with me” with tearful eyes I watched you and saw you pass away. Although I loved you dearly, I could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke my heart to prove to me, he ONLY takes the BEST!

And he took the best captain on the Bering Sea for his own personal oceans. May Phil come back to the Cornelia Marie and pull pranks on his family to let them know he’s around and that he loves them all.

  46. Recorn1 July 10, 2010 at 3:39 am #

I just want to thank you, your family and the Harris family for keeping us informed as to what has been going on. It’s something known of you had to do. I think all of us fans would have respected it if all of you had just said this is a personal family matter. I greatly respect the difficult decision for everyone involved to open your heartache and struggle to the DC fans and ultimately the world.
I was greatly saddened when I first heard of Phil’s stroke and then his passing. I thought about Phil’s family, them losing a son, father, husband, brother and so on. I especially thought of Jake and Josh. How close they were to their dad. Hoping they would be okay and be able to make it through. They are lucky in that they knew exactly how much Phil loved them and how proud he always was of them. Not everyone is lucky emough to have that. I thought of what the CM crew and fellow fisherman were going through. They are all family of the sea. They lost a friend and brother.
My thoughts will always be with Phil’s family, both blood and of the sea. I know this has been a hard time for all of you. Due to these episodes of DC airing, you all are having to relive your pain and grief again. I hope all of you will be able to one day think of Phil and not have any sadness, only filled with happiness and love.
Josh, you and I are so much alike that it’s scary. We take everything onto ourselves. We focus on taking care of everything and everyone that we forget about ourselves. Don’t shoulder everything. Make sure you lean on others once in awhile. We all need to sometimes. We aren’t the man of steel. Jake, I know the past few months have been so hard on you. You are strong enough to conquer your addiction. You made the first important step by admitting you have a problem. I can’t even imagine how difficult recovery has been with everything that has happened. You can do it. It won’t happen over night, but little by little. Sometimes, you’ll stumble. Just make sure you pcik yourself back up, dust yourself off, and keep going forward. When things get hard, talk to someone… ask for help. It isn’t a weakness to ask for help, it’s a strength.
My thoughts will be with all of you. Be there for each other. No matter what life may bring, you are all family..whether it is by blood or by sea. ove and miss you, Phil. Watch over your family and keep them safe,

  47. Jackie W July 10, 2010 at 6:01 am #

Australia is a beautiful place to live, but sometimes it can be a pain living here too. We are currently watching the Opi’s season 09, and Phil has just come back after his last health scare. The Cornelia Marie blew an engine and it cost Phil an arm and a leg to fix it.
I sit and watch now, knowing what happens in the future and it saddens me everytime. Phil was such a huge part of the show, and the one thing I noticed yesterday was his eyes. He has the most amazing blue eyes and I swear you can see into his soul.
To Josh, Jake and the crew, I have you in my thoughts and prayers. The show will not be the same without him. Although I’m sure he is still around somewhere, sitting in his beloved chair, chain smoking and just about pulling his hair out with each empty pot that comes over the rail.
We miss you Phil! Help the boys fill the crab pots so they can all go home early.

  48. Terry Rocca July 10, 2010 at 7:38 am #

I hope Jake and Josh stay with the C M….I don’t think I could stand not seeing them and knowing how things are going . I feel like they are part of my family just like I did with C. Phil.
But whatever they decide is best for the healing process is what they must do . Only time will tell . We all deal with loss differently. We love you Jake and Josh.

  49. Kris Lonon July 10, 2010 at 8:16 am #

Our whole family has watched since day one, and have been tuning in with a heavy heart and a box of kleenex since the start of Opelia season. Jake, Josh…I wish there was something to say, or some comfort to give…the terrible quiet that decends right after someone you love passes, is the hardest thing in the world to live through. I am sure your dad never thought that millions of people would feel as though he was a friend and grieve with you as though he were their own. I know that we felt as though we lost a friend, and it hurt my heart. People care about you and wish you well – I know you could probably care less what a fan has to say, but we wanted you to know how we felt. Be safe and make Phil proud, boys.

  50. Theresa Thorne July 10, 2010 at 8:54 am #

I am still so saddened by your dads passing. He was definitely my favorite captain. He loved you boys more than anything. I love the relationship he had with you. I still look forward to the day you are the captain of the Cornelia Marie. Take care of Jake for us all and of course your self.
Thank you for sharing such personal moments with your dad as you did. It meant a lot to us who love your dad and you kids. He will ALWAYS be missed. T

  51. Chris July 10, 2010 at 8:58 am #

We all knew last week what the outcome was ultimately going to be. We all know whats happening on Tuesday.

    Dammit its hard.

  52. hollyt July 10, 2010 at 9:30 am #

Morgan, thanks so much for posting the update. Once again, that Josh is a “pearl beyond price.” The most overlooked and least appreciated part of love is getting the job done when it needs to be. By making sure that the other crew members had a place to continue working and that there was a captain for the CM, he showed his true respect and regard for his dad.

  53. Lori July 10, 2010 at 10:36 am #

It’s hard to watch… can’t say “it’s only a movie or show” b/c it’s reality. I really liked Phil… it will be different w/o him, for sure. I hope that Jake gets help and I have a lot of respect for Josh. I’ve learned a lot about him throughout this ordeal and have a lot of respect. I just wish the brothers did not fight like they do. But addicts are difficult to reason with, and when Jake gets clean, I bet they will be closer than ever. xo

  54. Vickie Pruitt July 10, 2010 at 10:41 am #

We are all going to miss Phil.I myself am a very huge fan.But if he was a dear friend of Derricks and he trusted him with his Beloved Cornelia Marie,I know in my heart of hearts he will do our Phil very proud.

  55. Earlene M Lucia July 10, 2010 at 12:39 pm #

My Family and I have been watching this show sense it started. Captian Phil will be miss by us all. I just hope the next captain of the CM can do a great job as well. I really hope it’s one of his boys….

  56. Merry Reisinger July 10, 2010 at 2:51 pm #

Any friend of Captain Phil will do a great job as the fill-in skipper on the CM. Best wishes to Captain Ray, Josh and the crew members. I hope Jake can
accept responsibility eventually. What a wonderful bunch of guys.

  57. Paul McWhorter July 10, 2010 at 3:14 pm #

The episode we’ve all been dreading is almost here. Tuesday night’s episode will cover Captain Phil’s death in a two hour special. We knew it was coming – but it’ll still be hard to watch. I predict the highest rating EVER on Tuesday night. It’ll almost like a nationally televised funeral in a way – something you’d see for a president. But does anyone deserve it more than Captain Phil? I don’t think so. We’ll miss you Captain Phil!

  58. Sheryl July 10, 2010 at 3:58 pm #

I have respect for Josh as well as all those that worked on the deck of the Cornelia Marie. Guys hang in there and peace will come to You all. Josh and Jake I know you are going through an unbelievingly difficult time and will once again come together as brothers. Josh my prayers are with you at this time when i know You’re feeling the weight on your shoulders most of all. I love you all and have you in my prayers always.

  59. Bob July 10, 2010 at 6:46 pm #

Went thru what you guys are going thru now, my brother like jake turned to drugs cause he couldnt deal with it, hes almost dead now due to his addiction Its a tough situation i watched my dad go from a 220lb marine that could kick your ass down to 65lbs. Jake time to man up dude kick the drugs step up to the plate and honor your dad. Take over his legacyJosh help him out however you can even if you have to drag his ass down to rehab. God Speed Phil

Its been hard watching the last few shows. But i truly beilive josh and jake will overcome the tragedy of losing their father. I beilive that Jake can overcome anything thats put in front of him. i want him to know iv’e had a similar situation, where i turned to drugs to ease the pain of my brother passing. its hard but you can find peace in your life and make dear ole dad happy! hang in there buddy. we wish all the family and crew a safe ride. miss CAPTAIN PHILL!!!

  62. Pamela Wilson July 10, 2010 at 10:58 pm #

I have watched the show for years and come to feel like they are all family. My personal family is very heartbroken for the Harris family and all of the Crabbing families. I can’t watch a commerical about the last episode with Cousin Phil without balling my eyes out. I know I don’t know ya’ll personally but I hate ya’ll are going through this. Hold your heads up high and stick by each other.

  63. Jesse July 10, 2010 at 11:29 pm #

I loved capt. phil harris he was a king ,, if by any chance josh and jake see this you two need to take over the boat atleast one of ya man

  64. Stephanie July 11, 2010 at 12:45 am #

Our family had lost 2 great friends just weeks before Capt Phil and it was like reliving the nightmare all over again.

We lost my daughters papa dan and our dear friend dolly (like a 2nd mom) – cigarettes killed them both.

Josh & Jake you are not alone and please know people who were close to your dad are feeling the same grief. I just wish my daughter’s Papa’s 2 sons would realize that we miss him as much.

Ours prayers are with you and the entire crew and families of the great northwest

    love steph

  65. Anthony July 11, 2010 at 1:44 am #

Josh just stay strong. You are your father’s son in the best of ways, just from what we saw on Deadliest Catch, when the situation got tough your father fought back and got even tough. Stay STRONG and you will make him proud. May by the grace of God you be blessed with your father as your guardian angel.

  66. Brian Lewke July 11, 2010 at 8:16 am #

I am a fan of the show and my heart gose out to the family, someone havibg a stroke is a very tough issue and tough for the family to deal with, I hope Josh, Jake are able to move on and remember thier Father in good times and happy memories

  67. Steve Raucher July 11, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

Does anyone else feel that this will be the last season for “Deadliest Catch”? With Andy and Jonathan leaving the Time Bandit, Edgar wanting to quit fishing on the Northwestern, and Phil’s death on the Cornelia Marie, I just don’t think the show can continue.

  68. jim July 11, 2010 at 6:56 pm #

my heart goes out to the family of captain phil harris. he was indeed one of my favorite captains on the show. as for jake i sure hope you can get the help you need. i was a real bad drinker and druger myself. i have been clean and sober for going on 12 years now and real glad i got this way. you have alot of people out here that care. just reach out. god bless and hold your heads high.

I have been a fan of the CM since the series began and especially Capt. Phil. He is deeply missed by all of us who have come to feel like you all are family. It is hard to watch these episodes knowing what the outcome will be. May God watch over Josh and Jake and all the other CM family members.

  70. Danielle Z. July 11, 2010 at 9:01 pm #

I have been both dreading and anticipating this next episode for months now, and can’t watch the commercial without tearing up. I’ve been blessed in that I haven’t really lost anyone close to me and never has there been a TV figure’s death that has affected me the way Phil’s has. My most heartfelt prayers and well wishes to the boys and crew and everyone who knew and loved Captain Phil Harris…you are and will forever be truly missed!

I feel very funny watching tomorrow night. Like, I’m invading on private family feelings and emotions. And, because of my own emotions, I really feel like I don’t want to watch. I already know the outcome – I already know I will cry.

Yet, on the other hand, I feel I am drawn to watch. I am drawn to watch Phil’s last episode and to watch the love that surrounded him. I am compelled to watch how the discovery channel will pay tribute to this man.

As another poster said – you can’t say “oh – this is just a movie.” These are real people’s lives.

  77. hollyt July 12, 2010 at 2:24 pm #

it will be hard to watch the show for us fans, but it has got to be unbelievably rough for people who were friends and family. I know that Discovery has got to promote their products, but good grief. If I see that commercial one more time…. It reminds me so much of 9/11. I live in the nations capital and the media was asked not to keep showing the fire at the pentagon over and over because family had missing relatives. too bad they had to have that request submitted, and didn’t think of it on their own, but I digress.
Josh, Jake, Morgan, the crew, and anyone else close to Phil, I will be praying for you during the show. Eat a hot fudge sunday. Food makes everything bearable.

  78. Ornree July 12, 2010 at 3:38 pm #

    Salute with a duck fart!

  79. Michelle Christopher July 12, 2010 at 3:54 pm #

Knowing what is coming does not make it any easier to watch. I want to extend my thanks to the Harris Family for letting us in on such a painful tragic portion of thier lives. I loved watching Captain Phil and his boys and the Cornelia Marie is my favorite on the show. Just Remember what Captain Phil said. He had the best job in the world and one of the reasons was he got to work with his sons and spend time with them and get to know them as men. Blessings to the Harris family and the extended crew family that is the F/V Cornelia Marie.

  80. Sarah July 12, 2010 at 4:11 pm #

Tommorow will be so hard to watch! I find that I can’t even watch the previews without tears welling up in my eyes and a heaviness in my chest. Although I am glad that they dedicated tomorrow’s show to Captain Phil and it will be 2 hours I wish that DC would have done a memorial type of show with only Captain Phil and the CM. I am loving how Josh steps up and takes charge. What a MAN!!!! I hope Jake finds the solice he needs to make it thru this and that they both continue their lives, whatever that path may be, and make their papa proud. I will be truly sad tommorow althought there is an aprehension to not watch. I am a dedicated fan and like the rest of you I will be glued to the t.v. and most likely crying my eyes out. Thank you for the memories Captain Phil and the CM crew! We love, miss, and respect you Captain!

Jake, I know all too well what it’s like to self medicate!!! I lost a 3 month old son and my dad. Luckily I survived it all thanks to the birth of my second son. Please get the help that is out there!!! Maybe having your own family would be a way to go?!! I definatley have you and Josh in my heart and mind ALWAYS!!!

  82. Mitchmo July 13, 2010 at 3:33 am #

Tuesday will be interesting in a sad kind of way. Odd to be viewing content like this, but it is life. Thanks guys for sharing your lives – even in the hard times. God Bless.

  83. Julie July 13, 2010 at 8:36 am #

I’ve been dreading this episode but wouldn’t miss it for the world. Josh, best of luck to you – you’re really stepping up to the plate and I admire you greatly for that.
Jake, I’ve had my struggles too. You can beat this if you want to. You have to want it for yourself and no one else. Stay strong. I can’t imagine trying to get clean at a time like this.
Peace and love to the boys and the crew of the Cornelia Marie.

  84. Shireen Clawson July 13, 2010 at 10:46 am #

As so many of you have posted, it IS really difficult watching the show ‘KNOWING’ what the outcome is. Kinda like being is the Twilight Zone. You catch yourself goin’ ‘yeah, he’s getting better!’, then reality hits ya, oh yeah, that’s not gonna happen. Then come the tears, at least for me. My prayers go out to the boys to be strong and to resolve their differences for Dad. No doubt he’s looking over them and the entire fleet of friends. Gonna really need my Kleenex box tonight!

  85. Lisa July 13, 2010 at 1:47 pm #

Tonite is going to be very hard even though we know what’s coming. I will have my tissues ready as it will be a long night. I think this will help with the griveing process for everyone, but I must say I really miss Captin Phil more everyday. I would really like to me his boys just to give a hug or cook onthe boat for them and the crew someday!

in case you haven’t seen this before, it is from deadliest events or whatever that other website is called. the top line is a link, which i couldn’g et to copy as one. just put it in your browser or whatever.

For tonight only this season, Discovery is holding a live chat during tonight’s airing of ‘Deadliest Catch’, allowing fans a way to communicate with each
other over what can only be described as ’losing a family member’.

There will be two livechats, one for east coast fans and another for west coasters.
    Make the jump
    to Discovery for log-in instructions.

I advise logging into their chat room as early as possible as it will no doubt fill up right away.

Phil had become my favorite captain a long time ago. He was tough with a soft loving heart – reminds me of some I lost when I was 16 (not as brash -but in his own way as tough as Phil)His kids are lucky to have had him ,If I was a kid again I would love to have Phil for a second dad.

  88. John M July 13, 2010 at 10:17 pm #

Thank you for sharing what I know was a difficult time. Seeing Phil go hit me a little close to home. My
Father suffered a stroke last year and I am lucky to still have him around. It was hard to watch the the hospital scenes. Thank you again for being brave enough to share your lose with us. Phil will be missed!

Well, Phil gave it the good fight. I have every confidence that Josh and jake will manage the Cornelia Marie successfully and continue to be Phil Harris greatest living legacy. Like many others my family began to feel that the fleet, the captains and crews and their families were our families as well.We will miss Captain Phil very much and always remember him with much love. From what I have seen on the show all of the Captains and crews of the Bering Sea fishermen deserve our thanks, our love and our prayers for the job they do risking their lives to catch crab. God bless you all. May your lives be long and happy and the fishing be plentiful.I for one will never complain about the price of a king crab here in Florida again./we love you all! The Oliver Family in Bradenton, Florida.

  92. Craig July 13, 2010 at 11:35 pm #

This all completely sucks. My own dad had a mild stroke last summer. I was working construction, 3rd shift, and got the call. I can somewhat relate to what you guys are going through. My dad has smoked for over 35yrs and sitll does to this day. I am terribly sorry for your lose. There is nothing anyone can say to make it better. I have and will continue to pray for your family. You are in our hearts and thoughts. God Bless, The Brown Family in Louisville, Kentucky.

  93. CG8 July 14, 2010 at 12:26 am #

I thought maybe Jonathan from the TB would help Josh learn the ropes of operating a crab boat. Jonathan could co-captain & train Josh.

  94. Marcia Ballard July 14, 2010 at 12:39 am #

I just started watching Deadliest Catch this year but it felt like I had known Phil Harris all of my life. I cried almost as hard tonight watching the 2 hour special as I did when my own parents passed away. He seemed to be a great man and great dad to his 2 sons. I wish Josh and Jake all the best and hope they will realize what a legacy left for them and do the best they can and I am sure they will have tons of help from all the other captains. RIP Phil Harris.

  95. Corrie McDermott July 14, 2010 at 1:12 am #

That was really tough to watch. I missed 15 minutes of the show due to the satellite going out because of heavy rain. I almost wished I had missed the end. I sobbed like a baby. I can’t imagine what Josh and Jake felt and still feel. I have never met Phil, but I liked him as a person and between that and thinking of losing my own parents and I lost it.

RIP Phil. I hope that heaven is full of crab to fill your pots and many roads to ride your Harley on.

  96. Steven July 14, 2010 at 1:23 am #

This has been such a hard and emotional season of my favorite shoe. I am greatly saddened that this has happened and hope the best of luck for Josh and Jake, My prayers are with you and i have shed many a tears threw this season. Phil will seemed so genuine and down to earth. It wont be the same without him but he would want the boat back out with his kids on it. At least they have the support of the other skippers and will be welcomed aboard other boats as well. RIP Capt. Phil… You will always be missed i will wear my Cornelia Marine shirt with pride in tribute to Capt. Phil, Jake and Josh. Hang in there guys y’all are awesome and your dad would be so proud.

  99. Laurence Fraser July 14, 2010 at 3:40 am #

My family sends all their prayers to Captain Phil’s family. We related to Captain Phil on a personal level since I too worked a hazardous job for years. Now retired, I thank the Lord, with all my fingers and toes, (I am a bomb technician) We watched since the beginning and Captain Phil Harris was our favorite. No bullshit when it was warranted and a Teddy Bear when it counted. We loved him! Is there anywhere to send donations since Josh and Jake need money to keep the boat going? I haven’t seen seen anything. Please let us know. God Bless! The Fraser Family

  100. Evan July 14, 2010 at 4:27 am #

My friends and I all picked a favorite boat during season 1. After 6 seasons, I’ve been amazed at how much I care about the people who eat, sleep and work on the Cornelia Marie.

Wishing the Harris brothers the best of luck going forward.

    Evan from Ottawa, Canada.

P.S. The pep talk that the crazy Samoan gave to Josh in the wheelhouse was intense. All along I thought he just ate fish guts!

  101. Regina Doran July 14, 2010 at 4:38 am #

I only became a fan of “Deadliest Catch” during the 2007 season. Unintentionally at that. DC was on TV (left on from an earlier program) when conversation between Capt. Phil and one of his boys caught my ear, so I began watching. Just like that I was hooked. In time I came to like other cast members, some more then others, but without a doubt watching Capt. Phil interact with his sons was what reeled me in. Then I got my daughter hooked, my sons etc.. Needless to say I was shocked at the news of his death. My heart just breaks for Jake and Josh. I’ve had the three of you in my prayers since his heart scare. Of course I didn’t know him, but I am still comfortable saying that Capt Phil was a truly good man tough but still caring, his love for his sons always showing through whatever mood or stance he took. I hope he knew how loved he was. You’ll never be forgotten Capt. Phil. Jake and Josh, take care of eachother, my heart aches for you and with you. The Doran Faminly

  102. Lissa July 14, 2010 at 7:19 am #

I have watched DC sinse the first season. I started watching it with my grandfather who was a crab fisherman south of seattle. The Cornelia Marie quickly became my favorite. One of my first memories of the show was when Jake bought that t.v. I laughed so hard. I just loved to see what he would do next. I still watch old episodes. I like all the boats and all the crews but that family is and was what kept me coming back. Our Hearts have been with them since the start of Capt. Phil’s trouble. And we watched the final episode with tears in our eyes. My heart stopped every time I heard Josh say those words to Jake on the phone, in that commercial. And we will never forget the Laughs and heart stopping moments the show and all the members have brought to our lives. We Love you guys and we’ll never stop watching. Stay Safe and God Bless!!!!

  103. TERESA July 14, 2010 at 7:58 am #

we love the show PHILand his sons were something else.and me and my husband cryed over phil its like allthe guys are our family.

  104. Erica July 14, 2010 at 8:34 am #

Although, I am a newcomber to DC, I feel in love with the show immediately. Of all the reality shows on TV DC captures the audience with it’s intensity. Capt Phil Harris was certainly my favorite along with his sons, Josh and Jake. I felt like I lost a family member last night and it sadded my husband so much he couldn’t watch it. Phil Harris was a tribute to all and will be sorely missed by many.

  105. LINDA DIESSLIN July 14, 2010 at 9:17 am #

WE FIND YOUR ATTEMPT TO CAPILTIZE ON PHIL’S DEATH REPUGNANT. YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE BEARING SEA FISHING FAMILIES/ OR DISCOVERY CHANNEL PORTRAYAL OF THEIR LIVES. APPARENTLY YOUR MOTHER IS A SILENT PARTNER IN THE BOAT OWNERSHIP. THAT’S IT. ATTEMPTING TO INSINUATE YOURSELF INTO THE LIVES OF THESE MEN AS SOON AS PHIL IS OUT OF THE PICTURE IS TRANSPARENTLY A MOVE FOR FAME AND MONEY BASED ON NOTHING BUT ARROGANCE. QUIT LOOKING FOR FAME FROM A TRUE TRAGEDY. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU. I IMAGINE YOUR ARE MAKING THINGS DIFFICULT FOR PHIL’S SONS. IF YOU AND YOUR MOTHER CANT NEGOTIATE A RESONABLE SALE OF YOUR SHARE OF THE BOAT ,THE BOYS WILL MOVE ON TO ANOTHER BOAT. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THE FAME OR LOVE PEOPLE HAVE FOR PHIL. ANYONE LOOKING AT YOU WILL SEE A CREEPY SCHEMEING HEARTLESS WEAZEL. WE FIND YOU WORSE THAN DISQUSTING. SLITHER OFF TO WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM.

  106. Gabriel and Christine Keaton July 14, 2010 at 11:18 am #

We are deeply saddened by the passing of everyones beloved Captain. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and collegues of Captain Phil Harris. God bless you all.

It’s hard to believe how tied and involved a person can be without ever having met him in person. It breaks my heart and I wish the very best for the whole family. Remember he lives in spirit and am sure he is very proud of his boys.

  109. Ernest Zelnick July 14, 2010 at 11:56 am #

With the death of Cpt. Phil I find it hard to think about what Jake and Josh have gone through. I couldnt stand the thought of loosing my father. My heart goes out to the ENTIRE crew. Cpt. Phil had a love for all of the MEN he fished with on the ship, I can see that from watching the show. Would love to see the F/V Cornelia Marie back on Deadliest Catch as soon as possible. I know its late in coming guys but good luck and God Speed.

  110. Rick New Hampshire July 14, 2010 at 12:12 pm #

I like thousands of others feel as though we lost a friend in Capt. Phil Harris. It was really tough to watch a hulk of a man stricken down like he was. I really feel for all the family and friends of Phil. Johnathan (TB) you are a true family friend to the Harris family. I think you and Sig should help the Harris boys gain the experience they need to run the Cornelia Marie and carry on Phil’s legacy. To Josh and Jake, you both need to work on resolving your differences. You both have some deep boots to fill if you want to be the man your father was. You are both different versions of your father and would make an amazing team. And could you even imagine the smile and pride your father would have then? I wish you both the very best. RIP Mister Captain Phil Harris. You will be very much missed, you were a very loved person and will never be forgotten. I wish safety and prosperity to all seafaring fleets everywhere.

I have been watching deadliest catch for as long as I can remember. I like many others got hooked on it due to capptain Phil lol. I loved his sense of humor and his love for his boys and crew. My girl mal and I sat on my couch last night crying like a baby just like the day we found out he passed away. I will never forget goin online to read the news and the first thing I seen was phils face and the word dead. I know I didn’t know him but it felt like he was just family I have never met before and I cried like a big baby. My heart goes to Josh and Jake you boys are strong and have every ounce of your father in you. I know you guys can make it through anything. I really hope you guys have continued in your fathers steps. I wish you guys the best. RIP capt. As we say in the navy fair winds and following seas hunny!

I’ve been a DC viewer since season 2. My uncle got me hooked! I did not needed much, I’ve been a boater since I was 6.
I’m glad that I came about this blog. You see, I TIVO all my programs and I stretch them out so when the off season comes during the summer I always have something to watch. Last night Phil’s havoc started to unveil so I instantly what into a marathon! I wanted to know what happened! I was so struck by the “news” that I didn’t think about going on-line. Regretfully the story was already written. When I woke up this morning my wife felt I was a bit on the down low. I explained what happened. I also expressed that I felt kind’a dumb about it…it’s not like Phil is my buddy right? She said that it was understandable. As I reed these entries I feel better….or normal I should say!
I guess that being reality TV…it also feels real. I guess that since this program is about hard working people making an honest buck, about family, brotherhood, etc (which is hard to find today)…viewers tend to simpatize with them.
I respect all these people for making the hardest job in the world look mildly difficult when it’s hell on earth!

My thought and prayers goes out the all and specially to Cap. Phil and his family.

    fair winds and following seas…

Deadliest Catch will not be the same without Captain Phil and he will truly be missed. It was a very sad day when we learned Phil passed away. We have watched the show every season and love it. God bless Josh and Jake and the Harris family. We look forward to the next season and look forward to seeing the Harris boys on the Cornelia Marie.

  117. Jon Elwood July 15, 2010 at 12:42 am #

It’s taken me two days before I wanted to come back to the C.M. website. The passing of Capt. Phil the loss to the boys as well as the crew I can relate to all too well. I lost my mother the same way, but she never came around like Phil did, the damage that she had on the left side of her brain from the stroke was too much. We had to make the decsion, after the fact that the machines were the only thing keeping her alive, to pull the plug after 7 days of testing and hoping and praying like crazy people. That was the hardest thing to do ever, seeing Phil like he was, he had a chance he could have pulled it off and made it. He just seemed to be the type, reminds me of my own father and some of the things he would do and say, the two of them could have almost been brothers. Yes my father is gone as 16 years this Oct. mom just passed the 5 year mark this march.
Josh and Jake…. Take it from me as time goes you will deal with more and more each day, you will never just up and get over it, it will be one day at a time. Remember the good times and do what you guys need to do to keep moving forward, you will have days that you go back a step or two, but allways keep going forward.

I got hook on DC last season and it was of Cornelia Marie Capt Phil there was a feeling that he knew what he was doing on his boat, he make his crew and the boys feel like they was loved and I know he got the love back from Josh and Jake and the rest of the crew. I heard about Captain Phil passing on the internet and I was shock I couldnt believe that a strong man as Capt. Phil was that a stroke would take him out. I love the other fleet but there was something about the Cornelia Marie. When I heard that Capt Phil had pass away I was thinking of the crew but more then anything was Josh and Jake. Im blessed to have my father still here and I dont know what its like but just know boys there is a big family out here for you and that loves you both. Please know that we are looking for to seeing you both back on the Cornelia Marie as captains of your dad’s boat, you both have big shoes to fill and I cant wait until next season. People from Tennessee are watching.

Linda, does being an idiot come naturally to you, or do you have to work at it?

  120. Kim July 15, 2010 at 2:20 pm #

Captain Phil was a great guy and has raised 2 good boys. They will survive. This episode was very hard to watch. You see your own mortality in this show Captain Phil had no regrets, lived his life fully, and was truly loved by many. Maybe we should all hope for that. My prayers and good wishes are with his family.

“The Deadliest Catch” and the world are not the same without Captain Phil. The more I learn about him the more I realize the loss. I wish I could have met you Captain Phil.

  127. Audrey July 17, 2010 at 8:18 pm #

I have to say last week was one of the hardest episodes to watch, I have watched since the show started and feel like I know everyone! My husband decided he need to go mow the lawn!! Til 10:00, He could not bring himself to watch. We had a Fishing Charter business on Lake Superior for 11 years and had a few experiences too. Boys, your father was sonething

  128. Leota July 18, 2010 at 3:26 pm #

I will never look at Alaskan crab again without thinking about the men who harvest them in seriously dangerous waters. Cap’n Phil and the Cornelia Marie are a special breed for sure. I will miss Cap’n Phil but I hope to see Cornelia Marie out there in the years to come. To me she will always belong to him.

  129. Deborah Duffin July 19, 2010 at 3:48 am #

I watched D.C, from day one. I loved the show anything to do with Alaska was fine with me. But the show wasn’t about Alaska as I soon learned. It was about a team/family of guys who spend their lives at sea so we can eat a crab (my Fav. of course). The work put into getting that crab has made me appreciate it more. I loved Capt. Phil and his boys as much as my own family and cried rivers of tears when I saw the final show. I like many others thought he would make it. Especially when he said “I;m still alive right?” It just ripped at my heart. I hope Jake & Josh will work as a team now and carry on the ship tradition w/o their dad. I know it will be hard and I know he would be proud. Please do it so this Idaho/Florida woman can rest assured knowing your dad is still proud of the both of you & loves you deeply. My deepest regards, Deborah Duffin

I met Capt Phil while waiting for a plane in the Phoenix Airport three years ago, I walked up and told him how much I enjoyed the show, he offered to give me an autograph, and I accepted, then he Said “Sig is somewere around here”, then proceeded to call for him and look around until he found him and told him I wanted his autograph also. I knew I was standing in the presence of a great humble man, and couldnt beleive how many people were standing around us who didnt even recognize either of them. I feel privilaged to have met and been able to talk to Captain Phil and most of all share it with my family. He will always be remebered for all that he taught us and heled us to undertsand about life. Thanks Captain Phil, you will always be “One of the Best”

    deepest Regards

Mark – that’s really cool – and a testament to what we all saw was a great person with a great personality.

cant even really put into words how upsetting the last couple of episodes have been for me as a viewer yet alone how hard its been for those boys Jacob u will probably never see this but i struggled with those evil ass painkillers as well and honestly thought i couldnt ever break free but i did and have never been happier

  134. charles hall July 19, 2010 at 10:01 pm #

Thanks for all the wonderfull years of the DC you made the show for me i still watch the shows from the begining of it over & over till the next season begain with that said. Captain Phil, you will always be missed not only to all your fans & family but to the show its self it will never be the same without you . Captain Phil, im sure the show will go on as i know you would want. but it will never be the same show again RIP: Captain!

  135. Chris July 20, 2010 at 10:13 am #

Both my husband and i have been fans of DC since the beginning when it was a promotional show entiteld “Deadliest Job”…only Sig was on then. Then Phil. Fell in love with Phil and the CM and crew immediately. I can’t post enough how i feel about them and hope the best for both boys. But OMG i saw some of the posts above, particularly Linda’s. It didn’t even occur to me for a second that the family of and Cornelia Marie herself were capitalizing at all on Phil’s death. I thought it was pretty harsh. In fact, i think 98% of us on here-are extreme fans, not family or personal friends thereto-how would you know what is going on financially behind the scenes? Another point i would like to make is Phil was 1/2 owner. They (Cornelia Marie) do have some claim as to the boat and, therefore, have an interest in how it is played out. It is a business. We, as fans, also have a curiousity as to following what we thought was Phil’s progress and ultimately, we saw his death. I don’t feel there was anything there that would warrant your feelings as to Cornelia Marie’s family members preying on his death and seeking fame and fortune. If you read the earliest posts after Phil’s stroke like i was following, it was Cornelia Marie’s daughter i believe keeping us all posted and i thank her and Discovery Channel for doing so. I had a natural curiouslty and would always check in to see what the boys were up to-so to find out that this had happened to Phil-who else would have reported it to us. I don’t see where they ever implied ever that they were opportunists?

  136. Shireen Clawson July 20, 2010 at 5:42 pm #

THANKS CHRIS!!! You posted my thoughts EXACTLY! I was really STUNNED when I read Linda’s comments! Seems to have some ‘Major issues’ with Life and compassion.

  137. Ken July 20, 2010 at 11:15 pm #

R.I.P phil…… and peopleplease be niceto each oher while paying tribute to phil..(linda) your words are not taken seriously so go take a good look at yourself in the mirror before you post something like that again .Phil we all love you .. although many of us never knew you..Dc will never be the same.:(

  138. E Fleener July 20, 2010 at 11:35 pm #

I know probably no one reads these but, I been watching this show since the beginning and as far as reality shows go it never seemed like that, it always felt like I was coming home to jump on the boats with the guys. Most reality shows are nothing but crap about things that didnt amount to a hill of beans. Phil was a core part of this show and it will be hard for me to watch it without the full crew. Tonites after the catch tribute to Phil was awesome to say the least. I could watch a whole season of behind the scenes with Phil and his family. Hats out to his father for raising a hard working loving father who loved life.

Thanks Morgan for all your work here on this site.

I just wanted to say sorry for your lose and he will be deeply missed.

  142. Michele July 21, 2010 at 5:54 pm #

Like everyone else, we are big fans of DC. We have watched since the beginning.
We were all devastated by Capt. Phil’s death. Our hearts go out to the boys, the crew, and family. I was proud to see how Jonathan stayed with the boys, and Phil all through it.I knew he was that kind of guy…
I know that life is about change, and the show is old enough to start changing, but I just hate to see it coming… Phil started it. The Hillstrands retiring, Edgar possibly retiring…Josh and Jake have to stay…Who will pull all the pranks? Sig will need some help…
All of the Fleet are a part of our lives, and we look forward to each episode…
Phil will always be with us in our hearts…

  143. Kathy Huffman July 22, 2010 at 1:56 pm #

We love the show and really enjoyed Phil –thanks for the memories..you’ll always be in our heart.

  144. Randi Sargent July 22, 2010 at 5:20 pm #

I just want to say the girl who wrote in capital letters, LINDA DIESSLIN, wow that’s messed up, he’s a friend of the family and came into the picture when they needed the help.. some people man they just jump to conclusions. Josh good on you man for staying strong, I bet it’s very nice to hear all these people saying so many nice things about your father.. after watching the seasons for quite some time now I know that your father is a really amazing person.. I only wish I could have met him! I would’ve loved to chat with him about his journeys..

  145. Dolores July 24, 2010 at 1:11 pm #

God Bless all the fishermen! Capt Phil is still commanding the Cornelia Marie, just in a different place!! He lives on for-ever in our hearts!

  146. LuAnn.G July 25, 2010 at 11:05 pm #

This is for Joshua and Jake, I hope that you both will continue on the Cornelia Marie. Your Dad taught the both of you what he could in the short time that he had with you. And Jake just keep remembering the promiss that you made to your Dad before he passed away, just keep that in mind and your Dad in your heart and you can make it through anything. I can see the both of you running that Boat as Co Captains and making your Dad very proud. I don’t have to say to either one of you young men to work hard because you do a job that 95% of us out here wouldn’t be able to handle. You have a great crew to work with just continue to do your best and Remember that your Dad will always be watching over you.

  147. Shawn Stamback July 25, 2010 at 11:53 pm #

Josh and Jake we send our Condolences your family. I did not meet your father but knew him from the tv show and felt like I new him in person. I hope you boys carry on your fathers legacy and keep fishing. I lost my father while in my twenties and was a very tough thing to go through. But everyday I think of him and try to do what he would do in situations I dont know anything about. Keep your heads high and weather the storm there is light on the otherside.

Linda? Are you personally losing money because of this site??? Are you the official spokesperson for Jake and Josh??? If both answers are no then maybe YOU should slither off to where YOU came from. Or better yet, pick up a dictionary and learn how to frickin spell! Seriously, I’m embarrassed for you. Your posting was completely out of line. Try the Jerry Springer show with that mouth of yours. Regina

    @LINDA DIESSLIN

What vile comments you made about Morgan.

Morgan has been a tremendous source of information for the fans.

This site is the OFFICIAL site of the F/V Cornelia Marie. Morgan is the appointed spokeman for the boat.

Why dont you slither off? ….

Thanks Morgan for keeping us all up to date with what was/is going on with the Harris clan and the Cornelia Marie.

I have watched the show for several years . I can’t imagine what his sons must be feeling .. I lost both my mom and dad . So I kind of know what they are feeling .. I hope Jake fixes his problems and Josh keeps on living a good life .. TO both I say ” Speak of others often , but only of the good”. God bless all

  153. Linda ONeill July 27, 2010 at 11:47 pm #

If those boys are going to be serious fishermen they need to get their crap together.I think their fighting helped to stress Phil to the max & stress will KILL you.Their close right now because of loosing the Capt.,but I dont think they could work together on another boat for long term.Maybe one on a boat & another on a different boat.My heart is breaking for those boys but I just cant see them together on the same boat for long term.

  154. Candy Ford July 28, 2010 at 11:39 am #

    Hey Crew,
You know, I’ve never been a real big fan of movie stars but there was something about Phil (and all you guys really) that is just plain honest and down to earth that impresses me. I, in some strange fan way, loved Phil. I really hoped to meet him someday and just have a beer. Josh and Jake take care of each other. Your fans have all greived with you this last season and know you are strong people and will come out of your tragedy with even more strength and determination. BIG HUG!
    Candy

I have watched and re-watched the shows showing Capt. Phil’s death and the reaction of the all the crew and the captains and crew of the other ships. I have cried each time I have watched them. Capt. Phil was loved by all. My heart goes out to Josh and Jake. I hope that they will contine their father’s legacy. I know that he is watching over both of his boys.

    Rest in peace Capt. Phil.

I had watched Deadliest catch for a long time,When i first clicked past the show I quickly went back and said ” what the heck is this,” Well I started watching, and even watched reruns, it was that good, I have no clue, maybe because some one was doing something different, and it was very interesting,It is a sad situation for his son, and all the rest of the fishing crews, they all were so sad, Phil you are gonna be greatly missed,I will never forget Phil cause he looked like my brother, there will always be a reminder there, GOD BLESS YOU PHIL IN HEAVEN,ABOVE!!! WATCH OVER ALL OF US PLEASE !!!sure gonna miss you !

I have been a long time viewer of the show and the Cornelia Marie was my favorite. Seeing Capt. Phil be with his sons was amazing adventure or him I’m sure. My prayers are with his family. Josh & Jake, you had an amazing father and he lives on through you. Remain blessed and know he will be watching over you.

Phil touched everyone. I balled my eyes out. he will be missed vry much

  161. jd Wiley August 13, 2010 at 12:56 am #

My girl friend and I are longtime viewers of “The deadliest catch” program. Sometime in the early spring of this year I noticed a change, and told her that something tragic had happened to Captain Phil, although nothing had aired to the contrary. When the viewing season was comming to a close and the awful truth was slowly being revealed, we chilled a few bottles of wine and toasted the good Captain and crew. Captain Phil will be missed by all, but we’re hopeful for his legacy and are looking forward to the next season. We would like to have some hoodies, sweatshirts and t shirts made with a picture of Phil and his crew, and maybe a recipe for Duck Farts! Rest in peace!

  162. Kristie August 13, 2010 at 12:32 pm #

Captain Phil touched a kot of the viewers hearts but most of all he touched everyone on the show you could really tell. Jake and Josh you guys will do a great job on the boat because your dad is watching over you to make sure you guys do not screw up. Phil was lived by everyone. When I watched the episode of him passing I put myself in Jake and Josh’s shoes for a minute and I cried for a couple of hours just thinking of it. I think you all on Deadliest Catch are awesome for doing what you do and keep up the good work. For Jake and Josh keep your head held high and just remember he is in you heart and with you everyday. Rest in Peace Phil Harris. May God guide your crew on the next journey they do.

  163. Shannon Austill August 14, 2010 at 8:54 am #

Some people need to remember that we don’t see everything that occurs in their lives, even though we’ve made all of you a part of ours whenever we started watching the show. My heart goes out to you boys, and I’m sorry for your loss. Feb. 8, 2005, my sister and I lost our little brother in Iraq. Feb. 9, 2010, you lost your father, your boss, and your friend…and we all lost a Captain we loved. His face was the first one I seen on the show when I watched for the first time in July 2008. Deadliest Catch has made me laugh just as much as it has made me cry…I’ll miss Capt. Phil and his crazy sense of humor. God Speed, Cpt. Phil, you were truly

It still is unbearable to think of next season without Capt. Phil. He was truely my favorite captain. I only hope his sons will take over and carry on the family tradition. My heart still goes out to them, and I wish them all the best.

  165. Becky Youngblood August 23, 2010 at 10:57 am #

From the get go, Capt. Phil was my fav. I loved his outlook, his love of fishing and the way he loved his boys. How could you not love this man who seemed like a big bad bear and in his down time made bird houses. I will miss seeing you next season.

  167. Laura August 25, 2010 at 9:43 pm #

Why not let Josh take over with someone looking over his shoulder? Why not step up in his father’s shoes and have someone guide and mentor him. That is unless Josh feels he’s not personally ready for it. You’d be surprised how people with the proper training can step up to the challenge with a support system (esp. in the father’s memory). They deserve it…and we’re pulling for them!

  168. kingtutisfine August 25, 2010 at 10:01 pm #

captin phil is the greatest captin in the whole fleet.he will be in hearts. i like to see josh run the ship and jake be the deck hand boss. your dad will be there for you boys and all the deck hands on that boat. my heart and prays are with you.

    Josh and Jake,
Your father lived for you two. He loved you guys so much and it showed in the episodes that aired on national television. I have been a big fan of the CM and will continue to be. I hope that you guys will carry out your dads wishes and one day be able to fill his foot steps (it is something I know he wanted for the both of you. Be strong, have faith and remember that your FANS will always remember what a great DAD you two were blessed with! Good luck guys, I’m pulling for you two!

certainly like your website but you have to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to inform the reality nevertheless I¡¦ll certainly come again again.

Excellent blog you have here but I was curious if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics discussed in this article? I’d really like to be a part of online community where I can get suggestions from other knowledgeable people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
