Capt. Phil is in the hospital, medivacked from St. Paul

Captain Phil Harris suffered a stroke yesterday at St. Paul Island in Alaska. He was medivacked to Anchorage and is currently at a hospital receiving treatment.

I didn’t say anything earlier, so family can learn from us instead of through the internet. I know anybody who is reading this also cares about Phil, so we thought you should know as well.

Phil is at a good hospital and receiving the best care possible. My mother, Cornelia Marie Devlin and Jake Harris are with him at the hospital.  The boat is in the harbor now, but needs to be able to leave in case the ice shifts and moves in.

He was immediately taken to the clinic in St. Paul – the same place he was treated when he had a blood clot two years ago.

As soon as we receive more information about Phil, we will pass it on to you.

My thoughts will be with Capt. Phil and his family. I hope for a speedy recovery and that he gets to return to his chair as Capt. again. I would be sad if he can never return to the F/V Cornelia Marie but his health has to come first. GET WELL SOON CAPT. PHIL!!!

Our entire family are huge fans of the show. My children and I have learned so much about where our food comes from. We are so appreciative of your bravery. To go out there and bring back such a treat. Now when we have crab to eat, we now think about the men out there fishing. Risking their lives so we can enjoy such a wonderful meal. This is so sad to hear. Our thoughts and prayers go to Capt. Phil and his family. We pray for a speedy recovery and hopefully you can return to the job you love so much. Get well soon…..God Bless…..

    phil,
take care of yourself – you’ll always be a captain of the seas. just think of this as a little wave to get over, a little icy patch to get through. and we know you’ll make it to the other side, smiling and teasing your boys. let them be good to you.

You know, this is not the time or place to get into a debate about faith or the lack of it.

If you have a problem with the people saying “we’re praying for you”, just say “hope you get better soon” & leave it alone.

maybe he should take it easy and retire
    i hope he recovers soon

  97. Jason January 31, 2010 at 3:13 pm #

Get well soon you tough ‘ol SOB.

To all of you who are saying that Phill should slow down or even retire, you’ve clearly never had a passion in life.

This isn’t work for Phil, this is his one true love. Standing on the dock watching the CM pull away under the watch of Murray when he had his clot was probably the hardest thing he has done in his life.

Phil stated in one of the shows that he “always though I’d die at sea”. Of course he would. Where else would anyone want to pass away but a place they love with people they love?

Captain Phil is a seaman. To not be at sea and to “slow down” or “retire” would surely kill him a lot faster than any medical issue.

Fish on you ‘ol salty dog, fish on.

Let family and friends care for you for a change. Take it easy and remember the sea will always be there, you my friend may not.

    Dear Phil:

All my best thoughts and hopes go to my favorite Deadliest Catch character, father, friend, common sense philosopher, and, of course, captain.

There is no one else in the fleet I would entrust as much as you to lead me to safe harbor.

I place faith in the Fates that there is enough Divine in the universe that now it is your turn to be delivered from turbulent seas to a place of calm and peace once again.

Hang in there, old lion. Your young cubs still need you.

To the Crew of the F/V Cornelia Marie: We also send you our prayers for a safe season & may you all make Phil proud by catching the most you can! Know that he is in good hands & he’ll be waiting for you once the season is over!!

All of us captains in the “White Fleet” in Fort Lauderdale wish you a speedy recovery. I spent a couple of years with “MELLON” on guard for all you guys. I know your addiction and know you want to get back out and dance with the devil.

I wrote a little poem for you to read while you recuperate.

    A Crabbers Lament

Pots are all prepped and ready to splash. Each greenhorn and veteran all hopping for cash.

With room in the hold and crab farts in the air.
Line in the block, o’ver the side the crew stares.

For love or for money, the story’s the same.
    The pain. The exhaustion.
It’s all part of the game.

    The weather, the waves
    and ice take their toll.
    White water on deck
as she take a big roll.

    The nights are all long,
and the breaks are too few.
    It’s a monumental effort
    just to motivate the crew.

With the last pot aboard and stacked up on high, the captain and crew let out a great sigh.

    The holds are all plugged
    and scuppers are awash
    with no one on deck,
    it’s a lonely wheel watch.

With 12 hours to run, there’s still work to be done.
    I know you’re all tired,
but who said this was fun!!

When finally the harbor and factory looms near,
the crew is now resting after stowing the gear.

At dockside the buyer wants to unload in great haste,
yet the grizzled old captain reminds him – there will be no waste.

Now the last brailer’s been weighed, and the crew has been paid.
And the captain critiques the trip he just made.

At the Elbowroom bar, they compare each other’s scars, and think of their families who are a far, a far… and they ponder…

    Whether for money or glory
    or not for good reason,
The consensus is the same -
    I’ll be here next season.

    Get well soon Capt. Phil

I felt sick to my stomach when I heard the news of Phil’s stroke. Mate you have been through a lot and as the saying goes what does not kill you makes you stonger, but you also have to use wisdom. Take an extended break to recover properly so that you can run around with your grandchildren when they arrive as I am sure they will. Your sons and the others in your crew will take up your mantle. Take care, I will be sending a few heaven bond for ya mate. Bless ya heaps

  295. Gwen February 2, 2010 at 11:57 am #

My best to Cap’n Phil and his family. When I heard the news a captain had a medical problem, I knew it had to be Cap’n Phil. For those of you who do not know about strokes, there are two types:
    1. Blockage in a vessel (a blockage keeps blood and oxygen from reaching brain tissue) and
    2. Hemorrhagic (vascular bleeding that competes with the brain for space within the skull, which increases pressure on brain). While both effect the brain, the type of stroke and area of the brain effected will determine the outcome. If cap’n Phil underwent surgery to rectify the problem, he may had a vascular bleed. Ether way, he, his family and the staff caring for him will need all our prayers. It is fortunate he was training his sons, they may have to carry on in his stead.

  296. David February 2, 2010 at 11:59 am #

Seemed like only yesterday it was documented in a DC episode that his blood pressure was reported to be a stellar 195/125 or something in that range. Albeit sad – the guy was a ticking bomb!

  339. Kimberly Allen February 2, 2010 at 2:41 pm #

Phil, You are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you will be up and around and back to sea soon. God Bless!

  379. al foglietta February 2, 2010 at 6:14 pm #

    Dear Phil,

On a regular basis you deal with adversity, the likes of which most of us can only imagine.

Seas as high as your wheelhouse, winds blowing at unimaginable speeds, ice that tries to roll you and the catch that tries to avoid you.

You have met every one of those challenges along the way, and now, as you embark on yet another challenge, remember to keep your resolve, it’s what has gotten you to this point, and it’s what will get you through this.

Jake & Josh, my prayers for you both are for you to have the strength to continue while your hearts are distracted. This will be your challenge, and, like your dad has for so long, I’m sure you both will meet that challenge.

Phil, your new challenge, that of recovery, pretty much sucks. It’ll be frustrating & frightening all at once. Always remember though, when you fight all of your life, really, what’s the big deal about just another fight?

    You CAN do this!!!!!!

    Godspeed Phil………….

I’d like to see the series include a season w/ all the captains “on the patch” – the crew thinks it’s tough now…. WOW THAT would be something to watch. Probably not a lot of good audio though! 444. Chari Mercier February 4, 2010 at 1:37 am #

Hi! I just found out about Phil Harris’ stroke after reading an article on realitytvworld.com tonite. WOW!!! What a shock! I know that this news has had to rock the whole crab fleet out there in the Bering Sea fishing for opies right now. I have been a fan of Deadliest Catch since year one, and Phil has been one of my favorite captains. He is a nut, has great sense of humor, and is very good at what he does! We’ll all miss seeing him on his boat, Cornelia Marie, when Deadliest Catch comes back later this year.
Jake and Josh, I will definitely be praying for you and the rest of your family, and pray for your dad’s full recovery from this stroke. I’m also praying that this stroke is not severe, and his recovery and rehab will not take too long. You all stay safe out there, get as many crabs as you can get, and do this for your dad, Phil! He has always been proud of you two, so make him proud and bring in a record catch this year! I’m glad that Phil has come out of his induced coma and making some progress on movements. That is a pretty good sign of the start of recovering from the stroke.
Will keep you all in my prayers!
    Chari Mercier :(
    St. Pete, FL
PS: Please keep us updated on his recovery and any effects that the stroke has done in Phil, ok? We’re all interested in his progress!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Harris family, hoping Phil will fully recover. As a nurse, I fear his health issues may keep him from his career he so loves, We all love to share in his life and career as well by watching the show. I have also met Phil and his sons, it was more than awsome, hearing fishing stories and much more, in Las Vegas. Get well soon, we need and love you!!!

I hope that Captain Phil is doing well. We wish him and his family all the best. Love the show. Watch it every week when new shows start. I have to say though that I would not go out on a boat in seas like that to do that job. My knees hurt while watching just sitting in my chair.

  449. Susan Pint February 4, 2010 at 10:12 am #

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Captian Phil. I wish you a speedy recovery and lots of rest. Leave the boat in capible hands and take some time off.

Phil, Josh and Jake, My father is a long time member of the Bristol Bay Salmon fleet where both my brother and I spent many years fishing with him. He had a stroke on the same day so we know exactly what you are going through. These guys are made out of some true grit and will make it through to see their grandkids sliding around on deck some day. GOOD luck to you and your recovery Phil.

    Fair Winds and Following Seas

    Fair winds and following seas
    Ripples shimmer in sunsets golden
Cast your eyes to the heavens
Arise the first star of the night
A light shines bright when darkness contrasts
Earth in blue and blue of sky
When silenced falls after the bell
Soft sounds of waves upon the shore
When called to sail the seas of heaven
No longer bound to earthly soil
Abide in rest, no more to toil
    The Captains table welcomes thee
    Fair winds and following seas

My condolences to Captain Phil’s Family, Crew and Close Friends. Sending prayers your way. May the road ahead of you, not be difficult. May you find some peace in knowing that your loved one is now in a place with no pain or worries.

Love from my Family to yours.

I’m so saddened to hear of Phils passing. He was my most favorite skipper, I feel so lucky to have met him with Jake, Josh and Johnathon in Vegas. He was as great as he was on the show, so candid, funny and just an all around sweet man. I feel for Jake and Josh as well as his other kids, I too have lost a parent, so young. My mom was 38, she too passed from a massive stroke she could not recover from and I was only 21, so young and had to make the choice to “unplug” her as she wouldn’t have wanted to live that way. My thoughts are with the Harris family, lots of love and hugs on this sad day.

  469. Rory Flood February 10, 2010 at 9:17 am #

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Harris family and friends. You will be missed Captain Phil.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My heart goes out to you boys. I lost my mom when I was 28 years old.

I have so enjoyed “getting to know your dad and family” through the Deadliest Catch show. Your dad bravely fought through some really tough things that last couple years. He will be missed. The hard work of your industry never ceases to amaze me. I sure think of all of you guys from the show every time I put a bite of crab in my mouth!

May God bless you and give you his peace and comfort.

I have been on St George Island and have watched the fishing boats first hand before they were made famous by the Discovery Channel. I know the hardships and dangers these men faced and I applaud their bravery. Capt Harris will be fishing calmer waters now, Gods speed and safe harbor.

Deepest sympathy to Jake and Josh and the rest of your family; losing a loved one is tough, but losing it in public is tougher. Find and use the strength that your dad so demonstrated on the show and I am sure in real life to get you through these difficult days. His personality was a great reason to watch the show. Make each day count!!! Best wishes.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Harris family in hopes that they will be able to make it thru this w.hole ordeal. Most of the time when i hear of a celebrity dieing it does not affect me in any way. But i have to say with Phils unfortunate death i am experiencing great sadness with his death. he was a kind and considered man who always told it like it was, that’s why i identified with him so much.he was a great man and some one any person would of loved to call dad.Rest in peace Phil we all love you and we miss you terribly.

I am very sorry for your loss. I personally never met Capt. Phil but enjoyed watching him on Deadliest Catch. He was a great Father, Captain, and he loved to fish. May God be with all who loved him. He will deeply be missed. Josh & Jake your father will be with you forever stay strong and may god be with you on land and at sea.

My whole family is so sorry for your loss of Capt. Phil. Every season, we looked forward to watching Deadliest Catch and admiring what all of you do. Josh & Jake….I also have lost my Dad 7 months ago, so I feel your pain. It is never easy to lose a parent. Please know that we all are thinking of you both, along with the crew of Cornelia Marie. Know in your heart that people will be there for you, and your “Dad” will be your angel looking down on you.
    Be safe….

From my family to all of yours,We are truly sorry for ya’lls loose.Capt.Phil was a brave and strong man.I lost my dad so I know what your family is going through, but one thing you should know is Capt.Phil will always be with all of you.I never had the opportunity to met your dad,but I’m sure I’m a lessor man for it.Our family has watched show from the beginning,my grandfather was a fisherman in Virginia after he retired from the Navy. The one show I remember the most was when Jake and Capt.Phil were arguing about something and Capt.Phil said now you know why lions eat their young.I have 2 boys and a girl so I can relate.Funny as hell!Took me years to figure out the reason parents fuss at us is that they love us.Capt.Phil seemed like a wise and brave man, looks like Josh and Jake are growing into the man he was.Remember your dad and take heart in what he was trying to teach you, otherwise all of ya’lls time from family and sacrifice would’ve been in vain.God Bless All Of You and May God Look After Ya’lls Father As He Has All These Years At Sea.I hope Cornilia Marie sails on forever and the Harris family does too.

Capt Phil Harris was and is my favorite capt of the fleet. He reminds me of my uncle who passed last march.
I didn’t not know Capt Harris personal, but I’m still saddened for his passing and your family’s lose!
No words can change these sad feeling you re family feels.but you should know that not many men can make million’s turn on their TVs every week just to watch them work.He was one of the reasons the show is such a big hit.

Best regards to you and your family

    Dear Jake and Josh,
So sorry to hear about the death of you father.
I don’t know you, or Capt. Phil, but my eyes filled with tears at his
    passing last night.
I have watched your adventures for many years now. My brother and I
shared about the show, and what a dangerous life it can be at sea. I
had no idea how hard it was, and also rewarding.
I watch the show, Deadliest Catch every week here in Minnesota

My brother recently died suddenly of cancer, July of last year, so I
    feel your pain.He was 65.

My brother, Mike Finley was a retired Master Chief Petty Officer,
U.S.N., with 30 years at sea. He was buried at sea, as was his last
wish. I am including The poem, *Sea Fever * that he loved, that I
read at his sea burial, Astoria, Oregon. May it give you comfort , in
    reading it
Know that Capt. Phil, will be deep in my prayers, your family also.
Capt. Phil, may you have Fair Winds, and Following Seas, till you
    reach heavens shore!

God Bless you Jake and Josh,
    Yours Aye
    Judith

    “Sea Fever”
    by John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again
to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship
and a star to steer her by.
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking.
And a gray mist on the sea’s face,
    and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again
for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call,
    that may not be denied
And all I ask is a windy day
    with the white cloud’s flying
And the flung spray and the blown spume
    and the sea gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again
    to the vagrant gypsy life
to the gull’s wag and the whale’s way,
where the wind’s like a whetted knife.
And all I ask is a merry yarn
    from a laughing fellow rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream
    when the long trick’s over.

    Dear Josh. Jake and family,

My heart is broken over the loss of an admiral soul. May your higher power help
you find peace. Losing a father devistating shock; as with any parent. I
may not had know your father personally but watching the “Deadliest Catch” faithfully, your family and crew became my crew also. Phil was humorous and a great Captain. Remember Jake; you now know has to pull a bad tooth (ha,ha). God bless and remember that your dad shall always bring fair winds and guidance.

    Jake and Josh,
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. Although I never met him I can say that I will miss him and am truly saddened to hear this news. I spent many hours watching him on Deadliest Catch. I loved his wry sense of humor and the way he looked at life. His witty comments always made me smile and it was so evident how much he loved his kids. He was a tough guy who clearly had a kind heart. I loved that episode where he talked about how he liked to build tiny birdhouses, who would ever expect that. I hope that you guys realize how much your dad’s amazing presence touched so many lives around the world and how many people loved Captain Phil. The world mourns with you. I hope your father’s strength will bring you comfort in this time.

From The Netherlands we wish to express our deepest sympathy to Josh and Jake with the loss of their Dad.

For many hours the deathliest catch kept us locked to our television and your father Phil have made a huge memory with his raw talking, behaving and managing his ship, but always with a heart of gold.

We hope that his love for you, Josh and Jake, give you strenght to deal with this loss and we hope that God will guide you both with or without the Cornelia Marie.

    God bless you!

    Regards,

    Henny de Jager

Josh, Jake and the Harris family,

I am saddened by this news. I usually am no fan of television but I got hooked on Deadliest Catch. Although I never knew your dad I felt like I did by watching the show. He was genuine and seemed like a good soul.

I just lost my mother a couple months ago and understand how you must be feeling right now. Ever since she died I feel like she is with me, by my side like she never left. Grief has turned to comfort. It will for you too.

    Peace

I’m sorry for your loss. I met him last year and loved his personality. He was the reason I watched the show.

This is quite a shock. We knew he had a stroke and had been following the progress up til a few days ago. We truly enjoyed watching him n the crew. He was very tough n tender at the same time n it doesnt get any better than that. We only got to see him on tv, but I would dare bet that any person whose path was crossed by him was very blessed. As we watch the new season, I will have my box of kleenex right by my side. Our prayers n thoughts go out to all his family, friends, n crew. We love you all n stay strong.

    Jake & Josh,
My fondest memory of your Dad was a commercial he shot for Mother’s Day. With a frame of flowers around his head, and his smiling face and those words of compassion…”Happy F***ing Mother’s Day” That just says it all! When I saw the commercial my family busted out laughing! That was just so “Capt. Phil”. May he rest in peace, and may you know how much he loved you both! God Bless you on your journey!

I am so saddened by Captain Phil’s death. I can not imagine what the boys, family & friends are going through. (except that I lost my father 30 years ago to drowning…falling from his boat & got hit in the head unconscience) I’m not a reality show person, but we never missed an episode (& repeats…& Dirty Jobs) My sister-in-law & her husband live on Kodiak Island. They are the only Veterinarians there (The Johnsons) & treat many of the F/V’s animals. I loved having an inside view to news of crews that came in (FYI…privacy was kept about anything sensitive, they are professionals before family…we just got fun/interesting news. Captain Phil was a great man…very rough but always openly loving on camera to his sons & crew. I will miss him dearly. I will watch the new season but am not looking forward to it. I’ll have much Kleenex with me through it all. God bless him, Josh & Jake and everyone that loved him. I hope this does not sound cold, but will he be buried on the hillside with other past fishermen? And who will take over the Captain’s chair? I can’t believe he will not be at his favorite chair anymore. He was a great friend to many people that have never met him. Thank you Phil for letting us into your heart. You left a great legacy…but way too soon.

Sending love and condolences to the extended Cornelia Marie crew and family, especially the Harris family. You’ve shown millions of people the traditions behind commercial fishing, and how family is such an important part of that world. The love Josh, Jake and Phil had for one another and the often hilarious ways that love was demonstrated was a huge draw for me, the daughter of a ship’s captain. Captain Phil will be dearly missed by those of us lucky enough to “know” him through the show. And to the boys who did their best to look after their stubborn, lovable dad–hang in there.

  551. Iain Brown February 12, 2010 at 2:34 pm #

Jake & Josh. Myself and my family are Deadliest Catch “junkies” and words cannot explain how saddened we were to hear about the loss of your dad. He was by far the most likeable captain and one of the main reasons we are so addicted to the show. My dad died when i was less than 2 years old so never got to know him. Please take comfort from the fact that you had the chance to know him and the influence he had on your lives. If my dad was around today i would be proud if he was anything like Phil. Take care guys. Enjoy the memories!

My heartfelt condolences to , Josh , Jake, Captain Phil’s family and the Cornelia Marie’s crew.
I thank Phil Harris and the other captains and crews for showing the majesty of the Bering Sea crab fishing industry and the skills and hard work and fellowship involved .
Who would have ever thought that watching some guys fish for crab could become such a nationally televised sensation ? And how many of us watching would be content to sit through more than a few 6 to 9 show ” Deadliest Catch ” marathons ?… and love every minute !
No , we didn’t lose Captain Phil Harris . We will always hear the burr of his voice as he explains the nature of his occupation , the ever-present dangers of the sea , the excitement of landing on the crab , the pranks on fellow crab boats crews , and of course ; his apparent loving observations of his two kids’ maturity aboard the Cornelia Marie . That can never be lost .
Great job , Captain Phil Harris ,… Great Job !

It is so true that you must stop and tell the people you love that you love them NOW. Treat everyone like it is yours or their last day. Phil showed me how to live and kept asking me to join him. I kept waiting to jump on board, making all my responsibilities first. We made plans for when he was getting back and figured we have our time after all this time. Just before he left he told me “Life is short, you don’t know long you have in this world, take advantage of now” and I listened, yet now it is still too late. I loved him with all my heart, and I always knew he loved me. He had the biggest heart of anyone I have ever known. We could sit and talk for hours about anything. There was nothing but love in his heart. He loved his boys and father so much. They all are of great stock. I AM BLESSED TO HAVE HAD THE TIME I DID WITH HIM. He was such a wonderful part of my life. He was my best friend. He taught me I need to start living my life today…tomorrow may never come. I MISS YOU PHIL… Jake and Josh, you know I am ALWAYS here for you. Stay tight with your grandfather, you all need each other.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Phil Harris family and friends. My family has watched the show for several seasons and feel we got a glimpse into your lives and scary job. My family has been a military family of 20 yearsof an 82nd Airbone Soldier and know all to well the worry for a loved one. We watched the show at first because of the craziness of the job but later as a way to glimpse and see all had made it home safe for that season. We are so saddened to see that Phil has left this world for he made it a brighter and more interesting one. He will be missed by many including my family whom he didnt even know. All the best to your family and boys if you continue your fathers legacy be careful. The viewers could see how much your father loved and adored you both. R.I.P Phil… The Garth Family Fort Bragg NC

My prayers go out to the Harris family for their loss, I lost my dad about 7 years ago so I know what a terrible feeling it is.Even tho I did not know him, He seemed like a tremendous human being and a great family man who was dedicated to his family. A sad loss for the world

It is with great sadness that I offer my condolences. Phil was such an entertainer… via sharing his sea life with all of us. He was my favorite of all the fisherman.. I loved the episode when he quit smoking. Not only was he ridiculusly talented in his field, he appeared to be such a good father and employer. If I miss him and I don’t even know him…… my heaet goes out to his family and friends as their lives will never be the same. I pray that you d a way to cope with such an enormous loss. K Smith and family

I feel like a part of the crew and the personal lives of everyone on the Cornelia Marie. As part of the “family” I am saddened over the loss of Captain Phil. My thoughts to everyone and especially Captain Phil’s immediate family….we will miss him.

Josh & Jake. We are so sorry for your loss. We have fond memories of you boys as you were growing up. You have grown into fine young men. I found some pictures recently and will treasure them. They are of Phil, Teresa, Joelle & the red corvette. lol Our prayers are with you both. It has been a real joy to watch the show of you two and your dad working together. I remember him talking about what a thrill it would be for him for you boys to follow in his footsteps. God’s blessings on you both.

My thoughts & prayers go out to Phil’s family during this difficult time. We the viewers were lucky to have been able to come to know Phil via the show “Deadliest Catch”. He was a true skipper & will be greatly missed. Smooth sailing, Phil!

    To Jake and Josh….
the only family i know through DISCOVERY, i wish you Gods blessings over all of you and your grieving time for a man I would have gladly chosen for a father.

Out of all the captains on DISCOVERY/DEADLIEST CATCH… Phil was the one I would vote the most wise, kind, caring for his staff…. and just a normal man. Not a ego maniac, pride
