F/V Cornelia Marie at Island Seafoods in Kodiak

One lucky guy from Island Seafoods had the pleasure of chatting with Josh Harris and Captain Murray of the Cornelia Marie last week after returning from tendering herring in Togiak Bay.

“Josh and Capt. Murray are busy getting the boat ready to head back up to Bristol Bay to tender salmon in the fast and furious Sockeye Salmon fishery. The boat will leave Kodiak in five days. Before the boat heads up to the Bay, Josh and Capt. Murray are going to fly down to San Diego to film the ‘After the Catch’ episode tomorrow. There the guys will meet up with Capt. Phil Harris, his younger son, Jake and the rest of the captains from the Discovery Channel’s hit show.”

Among other juicy tidbits, he also discovered that while Captain Murray will be running the boat for the summer season, Josh is headed to New York to participate in some Discovery Channel events and help promote the show and industry.

F/V Lady Mary sinks off New Jersey

Devastating news in the world of fishing. According to the New York Times, two men are dead and four missing after the Lady Mary sank 65 miles southeast of Cape May, N.J. Tuesday morning. The Coast Guard said of the three crewmen rescued from the chilly Atlantic waters, only one survived. The search continues for the remaining four members of the scallop boat.

Our thoughts and prayers from the F/V Cornelia Marie go out to the friends and families of the Lady Mary.

Blue Ribbon for Cornelia Marie

The Cornelia Marie takes first place for most original design.
That would be the Randal Family’s version of the Cornelia Marie. The creative bunch took their love for the F/V Cornelia Marie and turned it into an award winning costume at the Salisbury Fun Festival Parade.  “All in all it was great fun – my wife even made up Disney Little Mermaid for our daughter and the evil octopus lady, as well as King Triton for me so we all went nautical and looked great!” (more…)

Merry Christmas from F/V Cornelia Marie

Merry Christmas from everyone at the F/V Cornelia Marie.  We’re tied up in Dutch Harbor until Opilio season; which starts January 15th.  Of course, the crew will start work before that day getting everything ready.  The Opilio season is a long, hard grind compared to King Crab.  The weather is worse, the ice is a problem and the danger is higher.  Here’s a couple photos of our last offload for King Crab.  These were provided by a blog about Dutch Harbor, called Dutch Harbor Dirt.  Thanks to the webmaster, we’ll be using his photos throughout the season.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.  The F/V Cornelia Marie is in Dutch Harbor.  We had to stop in for repairs  We can’t head back out just yet because the weather here is bad.

Our mechanical problems have caused us to unfortunately extend our King Crab season.  It’s been a longer than normal King Crab season for us, but hopefully it will be over with one more trip.

Tomorrow is an all day “Deadliest Catch” marathon on Discovery Channel.  See you there.

A Hero’s Journey

I came across a well written blog about the Deadliest catch I would like to share with you. The author of the blog only goes by the initial “b”, but is obviously a good writer. You can view her blog about the Deadliest Catch here. http://accordingtobreal.blogspot.com/

One of the most interesting aspects of the show to me is the fact that the show appeals to such a wide group of people. According to our web stats, we have been visited by more than 48 countries and every state in the union. I hear from every person you can imagine; from U.S. soldiers fighting in IRAQ to young girls wanting to know more about Jake and Josh. However, there does seem to be something everyone has in common. Respectfully, honest, hardworking – good people.
